Summary
The chill of night is like a river-soaked blanket on feverish skin. Shocking at first, enough for a quiet hiss to escape from usually stalwartly sealed lips, but relief far outweighs the initial shock. The gentle breeze is a soothing balm to aching bruises and still healing wounds.
Still, Shadowheart shivers, perhaps just an age old reflex. Devoid of her armour, there’s a certain vulnerability that makes even the gentlest of winds feel dangerous.
Something heavy and warm drapes over her shoulders and she looks up to find the frowning face of Lae’zel staring down at her, thoroughly unimpressed. Furs from her own tent swaddle Shadowheart comfortably, surrounding her in the now familiar metallic scent of steel and blood and something softer and warmer and distinctively Lae’zel.
“Istik. Only you would choose something as foolish as sitting out in the cold.” Her voice is more bark than bite these days, and Shadowheart isn’t quite sure what she makes of it. “You will get sick.”
Shadowheart narrows her eyes, “That almost sounds like you care.”

Just a conversation between Shadowheart and Lae'zel, light banter, headache for Shads as always because Lae is such an exceptional conversationalist.
I love the warmth of the scene, you can tell that both still have some reservations and are being pulled back by their traumas, but they're on the right track already.Its also interesting that the author didn't set what timeline this happened, as there is no Vlaakith nor Shar to affect the interaction. It was just them being idiots.

This author KNOWS how to play with words and rhythm, damn. (I dunno how to call it, best way to describe it is rhythm, how you hear it in your head while you're reading with your own voice). Fic authors usually think more of the plot and the drama; this one focused on the delivery, and it shows. One of the smoothest-flowing fics I've read on this website (tho the premise of the story still brought back bad memories).
Favorite line (so concise, yet so fucking profound how you even do this???):
"She is going to die here, hidden in the land of an istik goddess, ghaik tadpole burrowing through her brain, heaving flowers unto the floor.
Death without dignity for a girl without purpose, to end a life of no importance."It is very powerful because it is LAE'ZEL'S WORDS.

Summary
She has imagined potential reunions with Lae'zel before, but she never imagined they would occur before the death of the Lich Queen. It would feel like caging a wild animal. Lae'zel would always be looking outward, wondering about the Astral Sea and the fate of her people.
But Shadowheart is not a perfect creature. She houses these wild animals anyway. She watches wolves, squirrels, and cats lumber through the widened door of her cottage, embracing the warmth of her hostel and the gentle touch of her hands before returning to their own homes. She wonders if Lae’zel will come back to her in this way—imagines Lae’zel coming to visit for a single night before returning to the moon above where Shadowheart sends her prayers.

Farmer Shads and Warrior Lae'zel, continued from the good endings, Shads POV.
One day, Lae'zel just decided to show up at Shad's house with the gith egg about to hatch. Forced adoption with an unintended marriage proposal as a side dish lol
The story tells how Shads raised Xan while also facing the hardship of Lae'zel's absence. Lae'zel regularly returning to Faerun (instead of going back to Shads after the war) added more depth to their dynamics, and I think it is the best post-canon continuation for their "good endings." It's almost like an AU of a modern soldier assigned to work in a deadly war in another country while her family waits.
Timeline can be confusing, especially when the flashbacks go from here to there and back. Needs re-reading to add favorite parts here.

Classic "gf taking care of sick gf" fic lol. Shads is so chaotic while having fever dreams, then Lae'zel being a surprisingly good caretaker is sweet. She is Mamazel loool (ok Cha, see yourself out).
I kinda want to imagine Lae'zel's class action "Rally" was in play here somewhere, like, healing someone by nagging at them loool
