As he immerses himself in the book, Xie Lian keeps absentmindedly playing with the ring of ashes. It soon warms up against his fingertips, as though the very essence of Hua Cheng’s soul were reacting to his beloved’s touch.
A soft noise breaks Xie Lian’s focus once again, and he raises his head.
“…San Lang?”
He turns to look at Hua Cheng, who has stopped polishing the sword, his posture suddenly tense. As Xie Lian blinks at him, wondering what is going on, Hua Cheng hisses out a breath, shuddering slightly.

Summary
The Cloud Recesses Guest Lectures were held every three years for disciples between the ages of fifteen and eighteen. They had three purposes.
The first (and the reason it was hosted by the Lan) was to provide a shared baseline understanding of the core cultivation topics that underpinned every sect while not divulging clan-specific approaches.
The second was to create opportunities for friendships and alliances that would reduce the chance of war between the clans.
The third, and most important, was for the clans to replenish their bloodline by finding compatible mates with strong cultivation skills. In the last month of the lectures, challenges to test compatibility may be issued.
Wei Wuxian challenges Lan Wangji, sure that they are compatible mates. The Lan refuse to allow the Challenge.
They come to regret it.

The room was quiet, candles ignited along the edges of Xie Lian’s periphery, and danced shadows and lights across the walls. The flames flickered across Hua Cheng’s features, igniting him in ethereal shades of red and gold, he looked like a sunset burned into Xie Lian’s eyes, and he swallowed around the lump forming in his throat.
“San Lang?” He asked softly, nearly a whisper, and a hint of clarity came back to Hua Cheng’s gaze. Obsidian sharpened lethally for a moment before softening when registering Xie Lian’s face. “How are you doing?”
“You need to leave, gege.” Hua Cheng said, his voice seemed strained, his jaw clenched tight, Xie Lian could still see the flash of his fangs in the firelight. “You’re not supposed to be here.”
