They were alone. The acre yard was private, the other house obscured by one of the old cottonwoods. Helen kissed Carol’s warm cheek. It hadn’t taken carrots to coax that tender underside to the surface, but months of trust, of walking the path at Carol’s pace, gazing at the stones she chose to overturn and listen to her describe what lay beneath.
