Summary
Since Sam took up the shield, he's been busy. Being Captain America is a full time job, he doesn't get much free time.
And Bucky? Bucky's struggling. Lonely and depressed, stuck in his apartment, missing Sam, he's lost the positivity he had when he left Delacroix.
So when Sam invites him to Louisiana, Bucky jumps at the chance. Sam just needs to make a quick stop on the way to the airport to check out a lead.
But things don't work out as planned, and when they find themselves trapped in a walk in freezer, Bucky faces a desperate battle to keep Sam alive.
(There's whump here, but there is a lot of angst and pining too)

Since his rescue, Bucky has been unable to sleep, scared of what he can't quite remember.
At the tavern, he'd tried to get drunk, hoping he'd get a good night's sleep at last, but for some reason the alcohol didn't seem to be working.
Resigned to another sleepless night, Bucky was surprised when Steve appeared in the bunk house, taking him outside for a heart to heart and some much needed comfort.

It was a mistake, a stupid slip of the tongue. But when Bucky says Steve's name in bed, it makes Sam think. It makes him question Bucky's reasons for being with him.
Can Bucky convince Sam that he loves him? Bucky hopes so. Because if he can't, he stands to lose everything he cares about.
(This starts just after Bucky and Sam have had sex, and there is a slight reference to that, but there are no descriptions of sex in the story.)

Bucky has this thing inside him. Sometimes he is Bucky Barnes—sergeant, charmer, and Steve’s best friend. Sometimes he is the Winter Soldier—assassin, machine, and humanity’s worst enemy. Except when Steve found him, he didn’t become one or the other; he didn’t become a mix of the two. He’s just…both. Either-or. A two for one deal, all wrapped up in the same pounding head.
Bucky doesn’t trust the asset. The asset doesn’t understand Bucky. The only thing they can both agree on a hundred percent of the time is this: They both would go to the ends of the earth for Steve Rogers.
And whatever he is—whoever he is—Steve loves him too.

Summary
Steve's rarely been touched in a way that didn't equate to some kind of hurt. The cold metal of a stethoscope against his frail chest or the sting of a needle drawing yet another blood sample, when he was a sickly child. The bone-shattering punches thrown by the neighborhood bullies on the playground, or by his own father at home, drunk and wild. His mother, weak and clutching at him as she grew more incoherent with the drugs as the cancer ate away at her insides. Touch was something he shied away from, something he told himself he just didn't want.
Except...he did. He just didn't know how.
Until he finds a flyer for a local "affection and intimacy services" program.
In which Steve learns how to become comfortable with touch, and there is one very good dog, and a slow-burn romance.
