Summary
Grief, James finds, is circular.
--
“Does it get better?” He whispered once he had cried himself out and the tears had dried tightly on his face.“Better?” She repeated, and there was something anguished in her voice, a new and old grief twisted up together. “No.” Effie said, and Sirius’s heart dropped, but she quickly continued. “Though, it gets easier. Eventually, you’ll wake up and it won’t be your first thought every morning. It won’t shock you every time you remember that he's gone. There’s nothing better about losing somebody you love that much, but time will take the sharpness, and get you used to his absence. You’ll live the good parts of your life. You’ll get married, and have a family if that’s what you want. Whatever you desire, you’ll build it. And you’ll miss him for the rest of your life Sirius, but one day you’ll wake up and realize you lived through it.”
“What if I don’t want to live through it?” Sirius asked, his voice small.

Summary
James is not looking forward to his seventh year at Hogwarts. Well, he isn't looking forward to it being over, because he doesn't have any real purpose outside the walls of the school. So, when he finds Regulus Black one night on the Astronomy Tower, and realises the boy isn't quite as bad as he seems, he makes it his mission to save him. He gets the purpose he's been looking for and the opportunity to reunite Sirius with his brother. What could possibly go wrong?
Regulus does not want to be saved. He knows his purpose, and has no choice in where he ends up. So, when James Potter makes it his personal mission to find out everything there is to know about him, Regulus hates it. Right up until he doesn't.
The closer James and Regulus grow, the more they have to lose. James wants to save Regulus. Regulus wants to be saved.
Neither goal is possible and they'll both be torn apart in the process.
