    Summary

An is so loved. And she knows that. But sometimes it feels like being kept in a tiny jewellery box, like a little china ballerina that spins and spins on command and aches for the applause that comes after, but is always put back on the shelf when things spill out of her container. When they think it'll be too much for her to hold.

“When did you know,” she says abruptly, clumsily, forgetting it's meant to be a question. Mid-sentence, Haruka trails off, and their circle falls back to that tense, brittle quiet. Mizuki shifts, looking away.

“Know what? That I was a lesbian?” says Haruka.

“I guess so,” An replies, even if she’s not sure that’s what she was asking. “Yeah.”

“Well, what about you?” Ena prompts, attempting a smile. “At some point you just figure it out, right?”

“Do you?” says An, far too needily.

She flicks back through a mental rolodex of all the times she's thought well, maybe and finds a big fat nothing; no moment of certainty.

During an ad-hoc sleepover, An comes to a couple of realisations.

    Summary

Honami places the vase down on the table before her, and Kanade sinks to her elbows to bask in the light, so warm it’s almost like Honami runs her hands across Kanade’s shoulders before she turns away toward the sink. Time passes. For the first time in a while, Kanade lets it go without grabbing hold.

They’re just like her. She’s always… bringing me light.

    Honami brings Kanade flowers.

    Summary

Instead of going home, she goes to the library. Haltingly, she requests a book on botany from the sweet girl behind a desk with a mole under her eye, and claims a spot at the end of the long study desk. This is yet another place her anchor used to exist. They used to come here often, to talk with the girl behind the desk, and to read and study, sometimes with their other friends and Aigis herself.

They don’t come here anymore. Even though they yet live, they walk and they breathe, those memories feel like they belong to someone who is only partially here; who was rather than is.

There in the wake of a life, Aigis researches again about plants and death and waiting in limbo, and finds that the flower now carefully placed in her breast pocket is called forget-me-not. A name that feels soft at every edge. It is called that in almost every language she can think to look up, different sounds with the same meaning, as if all humans everywhere know its meaning without needing to ask. She aches around yet another unknowing, like a butterfly-shaped brand freshly hot in her ribcage.

Aigis waits for the end of the school year.

    Summary

After maybe hours of waiting (disproven by the sky only shifting one shade darker, though the apparent hours are no less palpable), they collect their snacks and sidle wordlessly over to sit on a brick planter box near the sidewalk, shrouded in the safe anonymity of the passing crowds.

An scoots closer on their perch, pretty sure this confession is going to be something made quietly. Mizuki takes a breath, their shoulders jerking upwards as if to store more oxygen inside solid muscle and bone.

“I just… wanted to tell you, that, uh… I’m transgender.” Mizuki finally looks sideways, letting their eyes meet. “I’m a girl. A transgender girl.”

An blinks, and it’s so quiet between them she actually hears her own eyelids crash together.

“I… know?” She sets down her crêpe in her lap. “Are you trying to… come out to me? You know I already know that, right?”

Mizuki finally gets to say the words out loud; An gets to bear witness.

    Summary

“An-chan!” she says brightly, in the same cadence as always, like they aren’t in space or something. Because this is a dream, so whatever, sure she does.

“Kohane!” says An, letting it sing-song out of her.

It’s only then that she realises what Kohane is wearing—she’s like a princess, in a long white ballgown with a train that disappears into stardust. Somehow, it suits her. Like her little body was made to be framed with a dress like this, gauzy and plush, grand in shape and somehow barely-there in substance at the same time. There are stars around her head, too, floating in an array that changes shape every time she blinks, and Kohane’s eyes sparkle with their reflections, like their own microcosm, matching prisms of a hazel-gold sky.

She knows, for some reason, what to do now. An offers a hand, somehow casually even with the knightly formality of the gesture, and just as lightly, Kohane takes it.

Four times An and Kohane share a dream, and what happens after.

    Summary

“Right,” says An, pretending to sound mollified. “So it’s fine, right? It’s not like she’d be expecting me to confess to her, or anything like that.”

There is less agreement in the boys’ faces than she’d like. Akito in particular has his mouth twisted into a grimace, and not just the usual one that lives on his face.

“Why wouldn’t she be?” he grinds out, shovelling the last bite of pancake into his mouth with little ceremony, like he can no longer enjoy it.

    “Huh?” says An faintly.

“I mean, you know she likes you, right?”

    “She huh?”

“...You know you like her, right?”

An’s voice comes out so pitiful it’s barely audible. “...No?”

Akito sets down his fork with a clatter and buries his face in his hands. “You’re not serious.”

Just before leaving for America, An learns what “the moon is beautiful” actually means.

    Summary

“Well!” trills Maya when it becomes obvious Franziska has finished tacking up the horses by herself. “Let’s get going!”
“Yes. Let’s.” Neither of them move. Franziska’s tongue ties itself into knots. “Where are we going?”
She has not thought this far. And she does not know this place at all, aside from the places that were a murder scene, which she remembers in far too much detail.
“I thought… Of course, you haven’t been outdoors here that much. Let me think…”
Something curls hot in Franziska immediately, watching Maya’s brow furrow, at already having wasted all the goodwill Maya should possibly have to offer in getting to this point, and yet there still somehow being more.
“We can just go out back, in the field? When tourists get bored with the shrine they hike up to Mt. Komagatake, so there must be a trail somewhere.”
Maya has things handled. Somehow, this feels worse than when Franziska was pretending to be in control.

Franziska and Maya go for a trail ride in the Kurain mountains.

    Summary

The cat rolls over, exposing her now-rotund belly. There she sees phantom hands, evidence of her leader’s deft touch on the world, somewhere they wouldn’t be without that incident on the bridge all those years ago. Maybe the cat would still be skin and bones without what Aigis had done. Maybe that makes up for it, a little, in a way she never can herself with her gunpowder-stained fingers.

What? says the cat with a flick of her ear when Aigis has been silent too long. She has been staring. The cat doesn’t seem to mind as much as people do, but her gaze snaps away in panicked reflex regardless.

“Can you tell me what it means to live, cat?” she says, returning to protocol because anything else seems too difficult.

Eat, answers the cat easily. Or be eaten.

Aigis interviews the animal residents of Tatsumi Port Island for an answer to her question.

    Summary

“Oh! There! Do you see it?” cries Kohane, the frame of her body quivering like she can barely keep from shouting. “There’s a Phenny shape in the tracks of the roller coaster! You can’t even see that from the ground!”

“Yeah,” An lies, her voice far too quiet. “You were right to suggest coming up here at night, Kohane.”

Tearing her gaze away from the way the starlight catches like dew on Kohane’s flushed cheeks, An only sees her own reflection in the fingerprint-smeared plexiglass, and it's then she realises she's smiling so wide her face hurts.

That's what surprises her most, honestly. That she could be so happy with just this.

    Summary

The unholiness of the two of them, human as they are and gossiping like fishwives, and yet the coming together between the pews… there is something about it. They are running a little too close to the venue’s intended purpose; a meeting across the aisle of two kindred spirits, united in purpose.

…Gumshoe has got to stop looking at him like that.

    Summary

And isn’t that fitting. The frame of Miles Edgeworth’s shoulders, just ahead of her, but out of reach.

Once, he would have let her goad him. Once, she knew exactly how to worm her barbed little words into every crevice, and he would let her, because he loved her.

No matter if she calls him little or not, no matter how hard she works, no matter her personal insistence that she is the superior sibling in every respect and he should learn from her… she will never catch up to him, because he will always be older than she is. It is an unfairness so cosmic she feels it like a neverending avalanche, timeless agony she shares with every other little sister that has ever been and ever will be.

She will never reach him. Not as an equal. When her feet slot into the shapes his leave behind, he will always be one more step ahead of her.

Franziska and Miles go for a trail ride in the mountains.

    Summary

Fran is knees-locked straight, holding her arm out with her elbow extended as if she’s afraid of the sheep getting too close. Her ward slips off the plastic teat at the hard angle and tries to relatch, with a little grumbled bleat of effort.

Maki reaches out to correct, but Maya steps between, with her two little charges drawn with her like toys on a string, because even if Maya’d a hand free to correct Fran’s hold she isn’t sure she would. The brittleness is stealing over Franziska again. And Maya loves her strength, needs to borrow it more often than she can admit yet, but having to watch that iron grip turning inward even despite Fran trying to pry those fingers apart… sucks.

    It fucking sucks.

“Babe,” she whispers instead, a more remote mending, “tip your arm down a bit, he can’t reach.”

    There is an arctic silence.

“I am not very good at this,” Franziska says instead, not moving an inch. “Why am I bad at this.”

Maya really thought dragging Franziska all the way out to her cousin's farmstay was going to be the hard part.

    Summary

    “I get it.”

Do you, thinks Nadja bleakly, even though somewhere, much further down, she knows full well she does.

“Mh,” Nadja grunts, and nudges the offending piece of firewood back onto the coals from where she’d thrown it. “Sorry, anyway.”

“I’ll stop,” says Varh, where a more normal person might have said it’s okay (both of them know that it isn’t, and neither of them know how to lie just to be polite). Then she goes quiet, staring down and away, off into the dark.

And they aren’t there, yet. Not yet. But Nadja sees it, like a glimpse through a window into a firelit room she isn’t invited into but might be, one day.

Two times Nadja sees a little glimpse of the future.

    Summary

Dick knows for a fact that Mr. Edgeworth at least hasn’t eaten anything since before they got to the embassy, and every face in this room has that same skeletal cast and staring eyes, those left with their puppet strings cut by the case’s abrupt resolution in the middle of the night and now no idea quite what to do with themselves.

Which is how Gumshoe had managed to corral this group of otherwise uncorralable people like a flock of sleepy geese, herd them into the back of the police department's minibus just as the clock on the dashboard flicked from 4:59 to 5 A.M., and thereafter deposit them into this, the previously deserted interior of a grimy diner.

It’s nothing short of a miracle, and he’s rather impressed with his own management of the power vacuum if he’s honest, but he’s not counting his chickens yet. Not until he gets some food into them.

Detective Gumshoe, and a bleary-eyed denouement.

    Summary

Honestly, they’re kinda cute - especially since they’re only little ones, smaller than the last joint of a pinky finger, curling in on themselves all confusedly in the pallid fluorescence, with their slow, ponderous movements, and two little inquisitive eyestalks. And only a little slime left behind them in oozy tracks. But they’d be much cuter if they were in a tank, contained, and not in a bathroom soon to be occupied by Maya’s girlfriend - partner? honestly they haven’t hashed out the details yet - who has an eye for perfection and a taste for the higher things in life. A kind of perfection all-importantly sans little invertebrate pals all too happy to accompany her while she brushes her teeth.

A girlfriend who will no doubt be jet lagged and need to shower because she is flying in today - very soon minutes away today, in fact.

    Maya is so screwed.

    Summary

And oh, yeah. He kinda got shot.

The warmth that had dusted up his skin from the brusque yank of Edgeworth’s fingers turns at once to prickly awareness. Honestly he hasn’t really noticed until now, because everything else has sort of been a lot in the intervening twenty seconds, but now that he looks down at it, it starts to hurt.

“Ow,” he says, like an afterthought.

Out of the corner of his eye he can see Edgeworth’s face go that particularly terrifying shade of strained purple he knows very well, so he doesn’t look, just investigates as the pain flares into true, hot agony for the first time. And yeah, ow. There’s a little round hole punched into him just under his belt line, on the outside of his thigh where he can just barely see it without twisting around - which makes it not quite his thigh, sort of, but definitely still his leg, unless it’s too high up…

Okay, it’s his ass. He got shot in the ass.

Phoenix and Miles investigate together. It goes well (?)

    Summary

“Well,” begins the detective carefully, “I wanted to bring something over, but I couldn’t find any at the store, to be honest with ya, and my kitchen at home isn’t really set up for baking, so I brought over the ingredients instead. And me. I brought me over too, to help make ‘em.”

    Kay perks up. “We’re baking?”

Gumshoe fishes in his pocket and holds up his phone. “These. Only if you wanna.”

And she does wanna. Because visible past the crack in the screen is a recipe for something that even looking at makes her feel younger, warmer, safer - a beautifully lit, staged cookbook photo of something she used to eat out of a plastic wrapper in the walls of the courthouse, and she and Gumshoe had eaten together, once, a long time ago.

Really, the thing is that she is thoroughly out of other options to fix this, this worst of all the wrongness that burns inside her, and this particular one refuses to go away. No matter how many little rituals she does. It digs and digs from inside her chest with white-hot talons until she is convinced it will carve its own bloody way out of her unless she can do what must be done.

"Her ears prick up at the sound of his voice, but she doesn’t move.
"You'll have to forgive me, I'm afraid. I suspect that I am not very good at this."
Miles would feel silly to an extreme for speaking to her like this, except for the way that Pess thaws, ever so slightly - her tail twitches, her head dips a little from its stiff posture, and she huffs out a long breath, heavier than her shallow meter from before.
"I'm aware you don't understand me, but I am quite certain that I understand you, Pess, at least a little. And I want you to know you are safe with me in this house, and that this will be your home so long as you are happy here.” "
