Diluc had been feeling odd recently.
And now, he'd started having these bouts of helplessness. He'd sit at his desk and stare at his work for hours, growing increasingly more upset until he eventually worked himself into tears, which usually resulted in him pulling his hair, stomping his foot and whining– Generally acting in a, quite frankly, mortifying manner.
He wasn't a child. There was absolutely no excuse for his behavior. His only relief was knowing this was a secret he'd be taking to the grave.

He also seemed a little startled by Kaeya's presence, but that was quickly replaced with relief as he immediately wrapped his arms around Kaeya and sobbed out. "Daddy please don't leave.."
Kaeya was so shocked it took him a minute to realize Diluc was talking to him.
...wait a minute, did Diluc just call him daddy?---
After reoccurring nightmares about his fathers death plague Diluc nightly, he searches out a new form of comfort to help him cope.

Summary
Were it virtually anyone else visiting Diluc this evening, they wouldn’t have noticed a thing — perhaps a bit of fatigue, at best. For all that Kaeya deals in secrets, he still struggles to probe far beyond Diluc’s carefully neutral facade at the best of times. Despite this, he did grow up with the man, which lends him a certain insight that others simply do not have.
Kaeya struggles to think of a name for it, even now. All he knows is that being the youngest Calvary Captain the knights had ever seen brought with it a certain level of stress that he often refused to show, until…well.
Very rarely, Diluc would act…childish.
And therein lies the missing puzzle piece.

A thunderstorm has Kaeya seeking temporary shelter at the Dawn Winery, and Adelinde convinces him to stay for an evening meal. He re-discovers something unexpected in the process.
