if everything had been the way it was years ago — if everything had stayed the same, there wouldn’t be any doubt that she’d have gone. she would have been granted a golden invitation; she would have had flowing dresses that are hers and carriages that, perhaps may not be her family’s, but still her carriage for the night. she would have been ushered by her mother to prepare by the early morning; she would have had her forehead kissed by her father when they’re finished preparing by the evening. she would have had a chance.
but, as it is, except for one frustrating thing, everything had changed, and she could only smile tightly as she tells him, “apologies, your highness, but i believe i’ve been stationed to patrol the outskirts that night.”

Summary
With all the loss the Doctor's experienced, he would have thought he would manage to keep his hopes and expectations low when Rose returns. She had, after all, done so with the Metacrisis, Handy - or John, as he's apparently called - as well as a mysterious interloper that evaded the Torchwood in Pete's World.
But something's off. With Rose, with Handy/John, and the whole thing that brought them over in the first place. And River's of no help, what with "Spoilers" being her only answer to anything. Which means the Doctor is inevitably going to be filled with hope that maybe, just maybe, he might be able to keep something this time.
Reality will probably break his hearts, even if it's not the way he expects it to.- Language:

“Oh,” she says. “I like this dream.”
“Funny that, I don't remember falling asleep," he says, and the voice isn't the familiar tenor from lazy days in their apartment or warm summers on the planet of her choice. Nor is it a comforting, if not gruff, northern accent that she still hears at the supermarket or on the edge of bad dreams tinged in gold and red.
It's warm and young and Rose is suddenly terrified of turning around.
