Both fractured by hidden traumas, their resentment of each other becomes complicated by their mutual longing for human connection.
Content: Most pivotal to this story is the theme of trauma. One significant plot point is Effie's backstory as a victim of childhood sexual abuse. This will never be shown graphically - however, allusions will be made to the nature of her abuse & how it continually affects her as an adult. There will be canon-typical violence, substance abuse, disordered eating, self harm, & dystopian atrocities. There will also be sexual content.

Summary

Alma soon discovers it's just Julieta when Pepa and Bruno both receive magic from their doors. Over the years, Julieta watches her children receive Gifts, her sobrinos, and has a hard time. Agustin is there for her, but it hurts to watch her children distance themselves from her.
After her sobrino Camilo has a vision the very same night of his Gift Ceremony, Julieta knows she has to do something. Camilo's vision shows Casita, shattered. The house is falling, and standing right there, in orange glass, was Julieta herself. She would destroy Casita, unless she does something to save the Miracle. How can a dejected and lonely woman save a Miracle that's been in danger for nearly 40 years?
I have yet to see a Giftless Julieta AU. Also Gift Swap, because why not. The healing Gift does not exist here. There is a reason for that.

The voice chuckled over the last line, as if disbelieving any of the kids from the Capitol were beyond poorer than the high middle-class citizens.
"Of course, tributes who refuse to participate within the rules of the game will have their shock collars activated.
Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the first ever Royale Capitol Games, with it also being the Fourth Quarter Quell from the discontinued series of the Hunger Games."
The announcer laughs, unaware of the sheer number of Capitol parents who have fainted from the live announcement. They were giddy for a while at having to recite the dreaded line, along with a sickening twist added by the end.
"And may the odds ever grant you their favors."
(In where the Symbolic Hunger Games happened much later in the future, and the Games aren't exactly what everyone expects)
