Josh could hear the clock ticking against the wall. He knew that if he looked at it, it'd read 1:47, exactly three minutes past when he last looked at it, and about twenty minutes since he'd shown up late to his appointment with Stanley Keyworth. Not that he was counting.
He hadn't said anything in the past three minutes. Neither of them had. The office had been oddly quiet for a room containing Joshua Lyman.
Maybe that was part of the point.

Donna and Sam don’t leave. They remain as the two lone sentries, flitting in and out of various states of shock.
(Donna goes through five cups of bland, room-temperature coffee during those fourteen hours.
Fourteen hours, and all Donna can do is toy with a thread on her jeans. There’s a hole in the knee, denim frayed and faded.
She felt like that thread— taut and worn, very near the breaking point.)
