So, it didn’t start out like this.
Alfred would scoff at the statement, about how Bruce was trying to justify the whole situation to himself. It had started out as a simple design, black everything with black outlines and black hood. It got a little more intense as the world went on, got wind of his ghost on the streets, and became scared of The Bat . So Bruce got a little more creative with it, Alfred and him had a good laugh over the name, the scare, and Alfred had a vicious streak of humor that he had passed onto his ward-
So now the suit had a visible bat-theme, an insignia to drape in the shadows and to paint across the streets of Gotham.
It only took a year into the whole charade of heroism for Bruce to overhear a conversation between some goons- some low level thug hired by the Riddler this week- about nothing at all pertaining to what the hell the Riddler was doing in the sewers but instead:
“ The Batman can fly, you know, I’ve seen his wings.”

He remembers being human, remembers the way that his mother would sometimes run her fingers through his hair and hum a dancing tune; remembers the way that festival days made his town so much brighter and full of laughter and filled the air with newness. He remembers how his father taught him how to heal, teaching him the uses for herbs – on those days, his father would take him out to the forest and they would identify plant life and steal fruit to eat, and they would walk home stained with juice and carrying apples and pomegranates and blueberries for his mother.
He also remembers the day he stopped being human; remembers the sting of the syringe in his upper arm and the regret filling his father’s eyes. He remembers the way his father’s soft flesh split and burst just like the peaches they would eat together, and he remembers how his father was composed and terrified – at least until he was bitten in two and then he screamed but only for a second until he was swallowed in halves.

He needn't have worried. The small one was strong.
He sees the human many more times since then. It seems as if the herd doesn't venture out without it. He wonders if that one is the pack-leader. It seems logical, but humans are not always creatures of logic.
He forces back memories of that one, and continues to shadow the herd whenever it ventures out. He makes a habit of waiting in the small grouping of trees near the gate so as not to miss one of their outings. Eventually he learns to distinguish the small one from the others even before it takes to the air, and he feels proud of this accomplishment.
Months later, only hours after the humans had returned behind their walls, everything changes.
(In which Eren is not a human that can turn into a Titan, but a Titan that can turn into a human.)
