Neytiri tells him to go. Jake finally does.

On the beach, Lo’ak is breaking.

He’s too late for pride, but not too late for Lo’ak.

Or: What if Jake listened to Neytiri and went after Lo’ak instead of letting Kiri and Tsireya find him.

    Summary

Lo'ak accepts Neteyam's death the fastest. He knows he's not coming back, he knows he won't bother him anymore, he knows no one will stand up for his mistakes.

After all, he's the reason his brother's dead in the first place.

When Lo'ak lost his older brother, a piece of him could never be replaced. And for Neteyam? He could wait for all eternity for his baby brother in the spirit world, as long as it's not now.

    OR

Lo'ak attempts, then meets Neteyam, and realizes how much he's been dragging himself down.

kiantu [ki.ˈan.tu] (noun): a blameworthy person

In a way, Lo’ak feels relieved. His dad finally spoke the words he’s been waiting to hear since Neteyam bled out on a rock while war raged around them. He finally spoke the truth. It was Lo’ak’s fault that Neteyam died and his father has finally admitted it.

OR, Jake is the one who finds Lo'ak on the beach during THAT scene.
Hint: He doesn’t take it very well

...And he does not know if it was Payakan’s banishment— a part of him, torn away– that tips the scale in his heart or if it was his father's words that broke him but either way he is certain
of his decision to die and sink into it again. To return his borrowed energy.

Lo’ak will pull the trigger and shoot himself through the head and by the time the hour has passed, the water lapping at his knees now will have claimed him and he will be free of this.

(Or: Lo'ak doesn't throw away the gun that night, but manages to survive his shot against all odds. Everyone comes to know what he did. How will his parents react to it? How will Lo'ak feel, having failed his attempt? And is there a way to heal after such an occurrence- not just his body, but his mind, soul and relationship with his father?

I have a ton of painful feelings and hurt / comfort planned. I've loved all the fics on this so far... and here it is my way!)

    Lo’ak’s eyes lift. “Promise?”

Jake lifts his pinky. “Pinky promise.”

Lo’ak’s smaller pinky wraps around it, serious as anything.

“See?” Jake says softly. “That’s another thing others can’t do—but we can. And pinky promises never break.”

    Lo’ak nods solemnly. “Ever?”

Jake squeezes his finger gently. “Ever.”

Jake Sully loves his son. He just doesn’t always understand him.

Told primarily through Jake’s POV before, during, and after The Way of Water, this fic explores Lo’ak’s childhood, rebellion, and the cost of silence, carrying its consequences forward into Fire and Ash, where love, guilt, and survival are anything but simple.
