He froze in his tracks when his eyes locked with a pair of hazel ones across the room.Will’s eyes widened in shock for a millisecond when their gazes locked before he quickly tore them away, suddenly seeming very interested in the glass of water in his hands. He was standing there on the opposite side of the room, leaning against the wall, not dancing, not talking to anyone, just standing there, now looking everywhere except at Mike. How long had he been standing there just- watching?

Mike is making out with a girl at a party and catches Will's eyes midway through. Things between them change and they end up in this limbo between friendship and something more. But every time Will makes a move, Mike's self-hatred and internalized homophobia get the best of him and he freaks out. He makes an unexpected friend in his sister Holly who is surprisingly good at giving life lessons from My Little Pony

Mike flopped backward onto the bed, his body sinking into the soft mattress, feeling all warm and fuzzy. “I really missed this, you know.” He said under his breath his eyes locked with Will’s that looked like they were… searching for something in Mike’s gaze. “Missed what?” he asked quietly.
“I don’t know, just... this.” He vaguely gestured at the space between them. “Us, you know”

Post S4, it's the apocalypse (kinda), El breaks up with Mike, some fucked up upside down shit happenes and through it all, Mike starts to realize what really matters to him.

Against better judgment, Will knew he wanted to know more. Wanted to know what was making Mike tick. So he moved steadfast, making his way back to Mike. Will taps Mike on the shoulder and he turns around. There’s already a smile on Mike’s face and Will wants to know why. Mike was an enigma, and Will wasn’t sure if he was someone to be solved, but he wanted to try. In one fell swoop, Will asks, “Can I paint you?”

In his Junior year of high school, Will Byers has found solace in the biographies he reads and the portraits he creates. He has accepted the fact that his life is not at all interesting like those of the famous people he reads about, nor is he worthy of capturing his own likeness in a self portrait. Will has resigned himself to being an ordinary wallflower that moves through life without a strong opinion of what he wants. When Mike Wheeler takes invested interest in him, Will wants to shoot it down, shocked that he can grab someone's attention so much. But as he grows closer to Mike, Will discovers that Mike's inclination to think of him as a superstar isn't a farfetched idea, nor is it farfetched to think of Mike in the same way.
