The year is 1984, and after Ted Wheeler dies because of some stupid lab accident at his annoying government job in Hawkins, Indiana, Thirteen-year-old Mike and his family are forced to move there and stay at some lousy trailer park because 1.) moving there was the closest thing they had to still being with him, not that Mike really cared, 2.) it was the cheapest place his mom could afford when you’re in charge of a family of four with no man in the house, and 3.) because Mike had kinda maybe sorta did something really, really bad to another boy at school that unfortunately just lined up with the time him and his family had to move so… nothing important really.

For a second, Will’s hopes spiked up. Maybe Mike really meant to write “Love”. Maybe- no. Mike would never write “Love” on a letter to his best friend. Best friends don’t sign “Love”. Best friends sign “From” or “See you” or “Write soon!”. But never “Love.”
Then he sees it. This paper is crumpled up even tighter than the other letters. It’s just a normal letter, or at least, as normal as the rest. But on the back, in plain black Sharpie, are the five words that best friends most definitely don’t write.

Summary
The group were a week into summer vacation, meaning that it had been nine months since everything, and everyone, had seemingly settled down from autumn’s atrocities. Will, on the other hand, felt anything but settled. But now was definitely not the right time to allow his thoughts to slip too deep, too dark or raw. He much preferred clawing into the unhealed wound that was the last two years when he was alone in his own room at night, and assumed asleep by his family. Those were the perfect conditions that permitted Will to cry.
To hate himself without anyone asking questions.

He continues his contemplation for a bit, and as Mike is about to speak up to once again tell his friends to lay off, Will breaks the silence:

Max I never could have saved if I tried because I was two thousand miles away, but even then I didn’t push El hard enough, didn’t encourage her to save Max in time, but maybe that’s selfish to think that I was the only one to help El. She doesn’t need me, doesn’t need me, doesn’t need me, so I couldn’t save Max, I can’t save El, and Will is gone, I couldn’t save him and I tried but too late, too late, too late. Fuck this, fuck losing people over and over, fuck not being able to help, being useless while people die.
