"I see we have the same priorities."
She jumps and nearly spills her drink at the unexpected voice in her ear. The oddly… familiar voice. Her eyes widen as she turns to see none other than Link beside her, midway through reaching for a glass. He's dressed in a very sharp charcoal suit complete with waistcoat and bowtie, and for a moment her brain can't reconcile the sight with her image of him at school: always in PE gear or his rumpled uniform with shirts untucked, sleeves half rolled, tie loose. During the brief pause that follows she watches him take in the sight of her dress with wide eyes before he quickly turns to the punch bowl.

Zelda is forced to attend her father's boring charity gala, and prepares herself for a long evening of speeches, dancing and formalities. But when she bumps into her schoolmate Link the night promises to take a thrilling turn for the better.

“Look. I don’t recognize her, Impa.” He palms his hair back in frustration, there’s irritation in his voice and Zelda’s body enters fight-or-flight at the hostility she didn’t know she couldn’t take from him. Her feet stood frozen on that flight of stairs, horrified one of them would notice her from their peripheral.
“Look at her,” he pleads, desperation in his voice.
“Goddesses, she doesn’t even know who I am.” He’s grasping for straws, hands clenched and itching to reach for the sword at his side like a lifeline. “It’s maddening,” he sobs.
And it’s horrible to see. She had spent the past four months thinking they were doing good—great even! Wishing—hoping—they could at least be friends. One step back. Zelda was sick. Another retreating step further up. She was going to gag. She beelines up that flight of stairs.
She thought they could still go back to what was. Clearly, she wasn’t getting that now.
So she does that thing she’s always been good at.
Run away.
