Summary
“You didn’t have to sleep with him,” Gale cuts him off. His jaw is clenched and he sways. He isn’t sure what else he wants to say, if he wants to give Astarion time to say anything. But soon more words fill his head and he can’t help it if his tongue puts a voice to them.
“I know we weren’t exactly lovers, but we were something. You were something to me, at least. I really liked you, Astarion. I thought you liked me too. I understand if maybe I misjudged or…”

Summary
It had been ages but Astarion could still remember how Karsus looked, his warm brown hair and honeyed doe eyes. He was focused, he was arrogant, his ambition shone vibrant and blinding like the sun—and it was the curse of the vampire to be helplessly drawn to it.
But here he was again, shiny and new, smiling at him, folding the ages they had been apart neatly underneath him as if his death had been a pause rather than an end. He looked so beautiful under the sun.
That is, until-

Summary
Astarion's willing to serve as a fun little distraction from his lost love. Gale certainly doesn't have enough room in his heart, consumed by his Goddess and ex-lover, so any attachments will be fleeting, which serves his purpose perfectly. Once the tadpole’s removed, Astarion won’t have need for him anymore, and he’s not at risk of causing any upset when he leaves.
For Astarion, Gale's something like an armour. With a powerful wizard on his side, he doesn't need to constantly look over his shoulder, terrified of whatever lurks in the darkness. He needn't remain vigilant in camp, either; not when he's wrangled such a well-liked, respected defender.
So – Gale gets a temporary distraction, and Astarion gets protection. It's a sensible trade, and it doesn't hurt that Gale’s easy on the eyes.

Summary
Gale looked down from the heavens as Astarion frantically hit Tav on the chest, pressing his bleeding arm to her blue lips, desperately trying anything to bring her back.
Astarion sobbed and yelled at the sky, holding Tav's wet, bruised, and bleeding body on the rocky shores where she had washed up.
With a sudden gasp, Tav's head rose with a choking sound. Astarion immediately reached to hold her head up, pushing the sopping wet hair away from her face.
Tav looked up at Astarion with a question in her eyes, but all he could do was pull her into an embrace as he sobbed and held her.
Gale waved and the image disappeared, once again alone in his tower in the Astral Plane.
He should have left it at that, he knew that she was alive, confirmed that sending her soul back had worked. He should have been able to move on, let her live her life with Astarion, and forget all about the mortal girl he used to love.
He should feel happy for her second chance of life, proud of his ability to so easily take her memories of him, wiping her mind clean of how he had destroyed her.
So then why did he feel completely and utterly devastated?
