Summary
"Verso gave us many new beginnings. He would have wanted a new beginning for you, too."
—
When their world's survival hinges on the steadily crumbling relationship of his daughter-sister and the painted facsimile of her dead brother, Gustave might just have to take it upon himself to ensure they can keep it together.

Summary
When you Paint, there are rules. In her grief, Aline broke them all.
The crack in the stability of the Canvas was all it took for the Writers to thread their own craft through it, letting them pull out a handful of inhabitants as their tethers to their world snapped. They explain it as a mercy to the confused members of Expedition 33 when they wake up in Paris. They tell them it was a rescue mission, to save them from the whims of the Painters—that this fight is now theirs, too.
But Gustave, Lune, Sciel and a very confused Maelle were not the only ones plucked from the Canvas. Beneath the Writer’s Council, Verso wakes in a locked cell, a new piece on the board of their war.
Turns out their Expedition might not be finished, after all.

Summary
He plays all the sharp, loud notes, he plays and plays until it bleeds, until it reverberates in his skull in a relentless cacophony. Until it echoes in the hall, up to the glass ceiling.
A sharp movement in the audience catches his eye, beyond the halo of the stage light.
At first he thinks it’s Maelle, that she’s spotted him doing something that she doesn’t like, doesn’t fit the perfect image of it in her head, but…
It’s not Maelle.
No, it’s Gustave.
Gustave knows something's wrong with Lumiére. With himself. With Maelle. And he knows he'll find answers with the mysterious pianist. And Verso sees.

Summary
It starts, as most things do, at the end.
The beach is a mistake. Black sand stings his face alongside the seawater’s salt. Gustave tries not to think of the blood staining his coat, the only thing warm within a world that is suddenly so very, very cold. Survival is a cruel master and he’s never been so scared outside the loss of his arm, but it’s the same compulsion to protect that drives him through the fight, parrying—dodging—searching for Maelle amongst the turmoil.
He thinks he first scents it then: his mate—before everything goes black.
Later, he’ll realize he’d known that scent long before, carried, on occasion, within the confines of Lumière’s fractured dome: clove and smoke amongst the petals of the dead.
Hey you, he thinks while his vision grows black and an eclipse of a man bleeds into a world quickly losing its shape.
His last thought is that he could brush away the panic painting the omega’s sad, lonely face.
His first thought is: Maybe I can.

In which the original Verso was a beta and so Canvas Verso must be too, right?

Summary
Gustave let go of a heavy sigh and nodded his head. Back in the Stone Wave Cliffs, he had come to peace that this was where his journey ended—For those who come after, right?—but it seemed like his story wasn't done just yet. Maelle had, somehow, given him another lease on life, and this time, he could live it. He could grow old. He could do things simply for the sake of doing them; every waking moment didn't have to be dedicated to trying to solve the issue with the Paintress, with preserving their civilization.
