Light defeats Near at the Yellowbox Warehouse and eliminates the rest of the SPK and the Japanese task force. Mello is still loose, so he keeps Near alive for 23 days to gain a strategic edge. With Mikami's encouragement, he discovers how exciting it is to take advantage of his now Death Note-controlled, perfectly obedient enemy.
Mello/Near feels at the end. Some Light/L pining.

Summary
Light is the victim of a brutal assault and finds himself spiralling into a state of despair as he grapples with the violation of his autonomy, pride, and God-complex. To cope with this Light does what he does best and manipulates the rules of the Death Note, using them to put him out of his misery whilst maintaining his innocence for the sake of his family, and of course, to claim victory over L.
