Chapter Text
He is going to be a father!
Kay told him the amazing news last week, but Sebastian still can’t quite get it into his head. His beautiful wonderful amazing girlfriend is pregnant, and in eight months, he is going to be a father.
Of course, Kay had worried Sebastian might not like this news (“I mean, we’re only twenty and our careers are so important,” Kay said that day, the pregnancy test gripped in a trembling hand), but he was just ecstatic. (“I’m so happy, Kay!” he said, waving his baton around before kissing Kay).
And he’s still happy. This is just… it’s going to be amazing. Kay is going to have a baby and they are going to have a child and they will become a little family. No, he didn’t dislike her news in the slightest. To be honest, he can’t wait.
One day, Sebastian rocks slightly as he sits at his desk, writing notes for tomorrow’s case. Kay is his assigned detective, so she will be taking the stand to present evidence for Sebastian’s case. He loves working with his girlfriend. It really is amazing.
When his phone rings, Sebastian jumps (and then wants to kick himself for jumping, annoyed by his overactive startle response) and picks it up. “Hello?”
“Sebastian,” Dick Gumshoe says, his voice weak.
“Detective?” he says, frowning. “Why are you calling?”
Gumshoe sighs. “Look, pal… Kay’s been rushed to hospital.”
Sebastian’s stomach clenches; he wants to be sick. He bounces his legs up and down, hand trembling around the phone. “Wh-What?”
“She looked like she was in pain and went dashing to the bathroom and when she came back she sat there looking white as a sheet and asked for someone to take her to hospital, pal. Detective Skye was at the end of her shift so she took her. That’s all I know, sorry.”
“No… that’s okay,” Sebastian says, staring blankly into space. “Thank you, detective.”
The moment he hangs up, Sebastian jumps to his feet and dashes out of the room. He doesn’t care that he’s leaving during working hours, simply hurtling out of the office as he grips his baton in still trembling hands. Kay is at the hospital.
When he arrives, he is desperately out of breath. Sebastian has to force his words out, but gets directed to Kay’s side room nevertheless.
He bursts into the room, and stares at Kay. She sits propped up in bed, pale and clammy with tears running down her face.
“Seb,” she whispers.
“Kay!” Sebastian says, voice faltering. He drops into the chair beside the bed, reaching for her hand. “Kay, what happened?”
Kay stares at him, her happy-go-lucky expression nowhere to be seen. Tears leak down her face, and she whispers, “Seb, I… I lost the baby.”
I lost the baby.
She… had a miscarriage?
“Oh, Kay, I…” Sebastian leans forwards and hugs her tightly.
Not sure what else to say, he hugs his sobbing girlfriend like he can never let go.
