Chapter Text

3:00 am

Bruce had just returned back from patrol an hour ago, but found himself unable to sleep. Tonight had been fairly gruesome, even for Gotham’s standards. For one, Black Mask decided the best thing to do was up the ante and actually peel people’s faces off. Bruce will never forget the sight of the family hanging upside down, father, daughter, son, mother. All faceless, revealing the muscle, veins, and little specks of thin flesh. The cuts hadn’t been clean, but they had gotten the job done.

Thankfully, Dick hadn’t been there to see it. At eleven, Bruce refused to keep the kid out past 11pm. The easiest way was to convince the kid that the older he got, he would gain an hour per year. Alfred had begged him to set it earlier, but he knew this was the only way to keep Dick from going out himself.

Sighing, he turned in bed, staring at the large window beside him. The lake rippled from the force of the wind, a few ducks tucking close to avoid most of it. They paddled around, leaving rings of water branching out. The trees swayed, and he watched as a single leaf broke off and dropped down by the edge of the water. A small creature scurried across the lawn.

3:12

He was tired. A bone deep tiredness that forced itself into the bone marrow. It weighed him down, as though he was wearing five times the weight of his suit. Getting back to the Lake House had been difficult enough, managing to get out of the suit. Alfred had given him a disapproving look at the patchwork of bruises and cuts. But, the older man hadn’t said much as he bandaged Bruce up, each touch soothing that itch in his skin.

Touch usually meant one of three things for Bruce, violence, payment, cover. In the field, the criminals and villains would hurt him in ways he quickly learned were possible. Sometimes, he needed to trade his body for things, information, silence, whatever. Other times, he had to let himself be draped all over, hide his flinching and push down the feeling of wrongness when another person would throw themselves at him. But with Alfred, it was always different. His touches were not harmful, in fact they were loving, caring. Alfred had been there since he was eight, had cared for him far more than Bruce had expected. The man who started as his butler, had become a father for him.

His door creaked open, instantly putting himself on alert. It was too dark to really see the door, especially with the way the moon lighting was situated. Bruce could hear the small patter of feet against the wooden floor. There didn’t seem to be anything malicious, still, Bruce kept his breathing in sync, pretending to sleep, all while subtly reaching for the batarang under his pillow.

“Mr. Wayne?” a quiet voice whispered, Dick’s clearly. It was scratchy, as though the kid had been crying, yet still groggy with sleep. “Bruce, are you awake?”

Bruce forced his muscles to relax, letting go of the batarang. Already the kid using his first name was putting him at ease, half a year in and the kid still struggled with dropping the title. He blinked up at the kid, pushing himself up in the bed.

“Dick? Are you okay?” Bruce asked cautiously. This was the first time Dick was coming to him in the night, the first time the kid… has really come to him for anything.

Dick looked down at the ground, rocking back and forth on his feet. His hands danced awkwardly at his side as he bit his bottom lip. The kid fidgeted before looking back up, just shy of Bruce’s face.

Finally he spoke, not a whisper but still so quiet, “I can’t- I can’t sleep. The nightmares won’t leave tonight.”

There was a reason Bruce had first taken Dick in, that kindred spirit running far deeper than losing their parents at a young age to some criminal. He could see himself in the kid, lost, broken, unsure of who he was or what he should do. There were the similarities of their drive, their need to do good in the world, but not taking the credit. He wasn’t Robin just because, in fact, the name had come from Dick’s mother.

“I’m sorry, buddy,” Bruce answered, sitting up so his feet dangled off the side of the bed. Slowly, he patted the edge of the bed next to him. There was a small sense of victory as Dick sat down next to him. “Do you want to talk about it? What was it about?”

Dick shook his head, “My parents.”

Bruce hummed, unsure of what to do here. Alfred had been there for his nightmares as a kid, but Bruce wasn’t Alfred. So many years had been spent on perfecting the art of repression, but now he had a kid to take care of, a kid he shouldn’t teach repression to. The kid had been through a lot, what he needed right now was support.

“I- uh,” Dick spoke up again, shifting awkwardly. “Can I- Can I sleep in here… with you tonight? My parents- they- I used to get nightmares at the circus. I would… sleep in their bed. It helped.”

Blinking, Bruce stared at the kid. He processed the information quickly, understanding the request and testing out the several options. If he said no, not only would it break the kid’s heart, but he wouldn’t get enough sleep for school or patrol tomorrow. If he said yes, Bruce would be welcoming someone into his bed, welcoming someone else’s touch. But it would leave the kid happy… and safe. He couldn’t lie that a small part of him cried out in joy at the kid finally opening up to him.

So carefully, he ruffled Dick’s hair, slid back into the bed, and lifted the sheets. Dick’s face lit up at the open invitation, and he quickly scrambled into the bed, moving the pillow right below his head. Bruce dropped the blankets down, hovering awkwardly before Dick squirmed under Bruce’s arm, wrapping his small arms around Bruce’s torso. Without thinking, Bruce dropped his arm on top of Dick, scooping and pulling the kid closer.

It was a nice feeling, being so close to someone safe. Close to someone who did care about him. It was different from Alfred, where he felt like a father giving him guidance, here he felt as though he was protecting his own kin. Maybe six months was too fast, maybe he had attached himself so easily and quickly. But Dick was his son, at least in his mind. The kid was his to care for, and Bruce didn’t want to push him away.

Dick sighed, nudging his nose against Bruce’s neck. A warm puff of air tickled Bruce’s shoulder, but he ignored it, shifting for a placement that wouldn’t cause his other arm to fall asleep. Dick curled around him, knees carefully bumping into Bruce’s thighs. His small hands buried themselves in Bruce’s shirt, gripping tight to the fabric. After a moment, the kid relaxed, tension bleeding out of him. Bruce sighed, lifting his other hand to rest in Dick’s hair, slowly brushing his fingers through it. The kid hummed in his arms, quickly drifting off.

As the kid nuzzled into him, Bruce heard Dick murmur, “Love you.”

Bruce had to hold in his gasp, not daring to breathe for a moment. The moment the kid fell deep asleep, Bruce let out the breath, kissing the top of Dick’s head.

“Me too, kid, me too.”

-----

Superman stared at Batman as the vigilante swept into the room at a casual pace. It was a stark difference from his usually storm in, or demanding march. But that wasn’t the most unusual thing, no, what really surprised him was the large smile on the Bat’s face. Not once in all their history had Superman witnessed Batman smile. As far as he knew, no one in the League had. If it wasn’t for the subtle way Batman edged himself to cover the front door of the meeting room, Superman would have thought that Batman… wasn’t Batman.

Not one to miss anything, World’s Greatest Detective afterall, Batman caught Superman’s gaze, eyes narrowing even if his smile didn’t dampen. Clark blushed, fidgeting in, honestly, a non-Superman like way, but most certainly in a Clark Kent way. Not that the others knew that. Batman’s glare lifted, his smiling making the few features Superman could see soften. Who knew he would be so affected by the Bat smiling?

He wasn’t the only one, Flash was staring at Batman with his mouth hung open, Wonder Woman was smiling softly to herself, Aquaman had simply given one look at Batman, clapped him on the back and said “you’re weird” before dropping into his seat. Cyborg had been the next one to enter, followed by Green Lantern. Cyborg didn’t spare them a second glance before already interfacing with the computer. Lanter on the other hand had sat down with Flash and immediately began whispering with a few glances to Batman.

“Everything alright?” Batman asked, face neutral except the blinding smile that had now revealed teeth.

Something must really be good for Batman to be smiling at Flash and GL’s antics rather than glaring. Both of the heroes had nodded, tuning into the meeting. It wasn’t until after, when Batman exited the room, that the hall blew up with chatter. It was so overwhelming for a moment, that Clark had to remember what his mom taught him about controlling his super hearing.

HOLY SHIT , he was SMILING-”

“Did you see that? He didn’t even stop, and he showed his teeth , he smiled so bright he showed his teeth .”

“I didn’t realize he knew how to smile.”

“Boys,” Wonder Woman scolded, looking over at Clark for assistance, “I think whatever Batman had going on, was a good thing. There is no cause for all this gossip. We should be happy our friend is in a good mood.”

The other three nodded, as Clark stood. Cyborg simply grinned before standing and leaving the room. Now it just left him, the two childish heroes, and Wonder Woman.

“Yes, I agree with Wonder Woman here,” he stated calmly, trying not to show his own agreement with the other two.

They pouted at him but he wasn’t going to give in. Still, he couldn’t get the sight of Batman’s smile out of his head for the rest of the day.

Chapter Text

Diana knew that many of her teammates were powered, or “meta” as many of them were referred to. Meta appeared to be a wide term that spanned many things but simply meant “not human” or “not entirely human”. It was due to this that she often forgot about the few human members of the League. Green Arrow, Batman, Nightwing when he worked with them, even Canary to an extent even with her powers. They all got hurt in human ways, with no powers protecting their safety like Flash’s super healing or Green Lantern’s ring protection.

So, it was this oversight that ultimately landed Batman in the infirmary. She forgot that Batman didn’t have any powers, which had led her to believe he would fall from the three story height without a scratch as she went after the H.I.V.E. agents. She managed to catch one with her lasso, pulling them closer to knock them out, before turning to the other two, and slamming her gauntlets together. They were far enough away that the blast wouldn’t hurt them, but knock them down, allowing Green Arrow to trap them in a net from an arrow.

She looked to Kal-El, only to find him crouched over Batman. The others, Lantern and Flash who were the only ones able to come with them, were taking over clean up. Kal was cradling Batman in his arms, much to the annoyance of the Dark Knight. She watched as Batman attempted to stand, pushing Kal away, but crumpled when he put weight on his left foot.

For a moment, she wondered why he had been injured like that, surely a broken leg, from such a small height. Then, when she heard him cough and grab at his stomach did she remember that he didn’t have the durability they did. He had no powers, just a man with lots of gadgets. Diana was too far to hear their conversation, but she could see Batman’s face scrunched up in pain.

She should have caught him, she realized. If only she had taken the time to stop, and save him even if she thought he would survive. But now, Diana would watch as Bruce walked away injured. Kal seemed to have the same impression, knowing that the Bat was injured, so he stepped forward to reach out and help the Bat. But just as the Kryptonian reached Batman, the vigilante collapsed, crumpling down to the ground like a broken pillar. Kal caught him, shooting one look around the space before shooting off into the sky toward the brand new Watchtower.

Battle clean up was always her least favorite part, but she understood why. It wouldn’t be fair to leave the citizens of Earth to clean up after their mess. Even if it had been created in an attempt to protect them. Still, Diana couldn’t help but be relieved when she took a zeta tube back up to the Watchtower to clean, and then sleep in the bed in her room aboard the satellite. Yet, as she walked down to the showers, she heard voices coming from the infirmary. She recognized Batman’s and Kal’s, but there was a British voice followed by a higher pitched voice that she hadn’t yet recognized. Nightwing was there, as well as Hal and Barry.

“Clark,” she heard Batman slur as she walked closer, “Clark have I ever-”

“Hello!” Diana greeted cheerfully, putting on a smile, she stepped closer to Batman who had been stripped of his armour and left in his cowl.

It looked a little foolish looking, but she understood that Batman wanted to keep his identity a secret. He would tell them in his own time. He also sat with bandages around his stomach, arms and were peeking out from under the cowl. The Bat looked worse than he probably felt, if that dazed look on his face had anything to go by. The Dark Knight’s eyes were hazy behind the cowl and face open in a grin. It was one of those lazy grins that Diana often saw from Barry when he was over tired, not one she had expected to see on Batman. His leg was firmly sat in a cast that had doodles all over, recognizing the rather obscene and inappropriate drawing from Hal. Barry had scribbled a smiley face whereas Nightwing and the other child, Robin had doodled a little bat. There was a heart also on the cast, which Diana couldn’t place who it came from.

“Di!” Batman cried, attempting to sit up in his cot with a large grin on his face, “I missed you!”

She smiled back, leaning over to press a kiss to his cheek, “How are you holding up, Batman? You took quite the fall.”

He shook his head, pointing at Alfred, “Nah, I’m good thanks to him. He gave me a loooooot of painkillers so I am feeling great.”

Kal huffed beside him, rolling his eyes in a fond way as he just stared softly at Batman. Maybe she knew who drew the heart on the cast afterall. That information was tucked away for later, when she could figure out what to do with it.

“You know Spooky,” Hal spoke up from across the room, smirk resting on his face, where he was leaning against the wall with Barry, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you smile this much since well… that one meeting.”

“Oh yeah! Nightwing asked to cuddle me that night, it made me happy,” Batman replied, letting out a small laugh.

“B!” Nightwing shouted, face going bright red and shoulders hunching. The look on his face practically was begging for death. Though, Diana doubted Thanatos would be much help here. “You can’t just say things like that-”

Robin on the other hand, looked positively giddy, giving that classic shit-eating grin of him. It was honestly astonishing how different, yet similar, the two Robins were. Still, she noticed Robin poke Nightwing in the stomach, muttering something that earned him a lighthearted smack on the back of his head. Brothers.

The British man, who Diana now recognized as Alfred from the few comms they’ve had, cleared his throat before giving a pointed look at the two youngest vigilantes. Almost immediately, Robin stood up straight and scurried out of the room. Nightwing had the smarts to look sheepish before giving an excuse about having to get back to the Titans. They both left, bickering out the door and down to the Zeta tubes.

“Awww,” Batman whined, and Diana was really having a sense of uncanny valley in seeing those new expressions on the somber hero’s face. “Alfie you can’t just send my kids away!”

“Master Robin has homework to complete, school in the morning remember? His attendance record is already atrocious; we cannot let it continue. Master Nightwing has a date with Miss Koriand'r that he seemingly has forgotten about. Honestly, Master Batman you would think that boy learned some manners,” Alfred responded, giving the whole room a once over as he hovered over his ward.

“Batman,” Barry said, zipping across the room to stand by Batman’s bed, “you’ve never told us who of us are your favorite.”

Batman didn’t even hesitate to answer, “Cla- Kal- Superman! And then Diana. Cyborg is third because he is fun to talk to. The rest of you are tied at fourth.”

“But I’m higher than Hal right?”

“Hey!” came Hal’s indignant cry.

Batman giggled. He giggled . The whole room went silent, but those small giggles eventually turned into a booming laugh that had Batman wheezing toward the end. Finally they died down to small snickers, but the damage had been done. Barry didn’t look like he was breathing, Hal looked completely dumbstruck, and Diana herself felt a bit… unsettled. Batman didn’t giggle. The only two unaffected were Clark and Alfred, with the latter not even acknowledging what had happened and the former reaching down to pat the Bat on the head.

“You’re funny,” Batman said, looking at Hal and Barry.

The two friends seemed frozen, completely bewildered as to what was happening. Diana found it amusing, with their wide eyes and gobsmacked looks. She understood how they felt but was better at controlling it. In the end, she took pity on them.

“Boys, would you mind fixing something up for our fearless co-leader to eat?”

They both nodded, with Barry grabbing Hal’s arm before dashing away. When they did, Diana stepped forward and locked the door. When she finished, she walked around and positioned both her and Kal so they were blocking the camera’s view of Bruce’s face. Bruce seemed to appreciate this, even in his delirious state, as he smiled at them before taking the cowl off. Once it was off, he glared at it and tossed it into a corner. Alfred made a tutting sound before picking it off and dusting it.

“Do be more careful with your armour, Master Bruce,” Alfred scolded, before swiftly leaving the room himself.

“You’re putting the team in quite a tizzy,” Clark answered, which immediately sent Bruce into giggles.

“And you’re cute,” Bruce answered, grabbing onto Clark’s hand.

Diana raised her eyebrows, which simply caused Clark to blush. She decided to let it go for now, to focus on making sure Bruce was okay. Now that the cowl was off, Bruce looked even worse. He had a black eye, there was a small cut at the top of his head, and a bandage covering much of the left side of his forehead. She couldn’t help but frown in concern over her friend’s pain.

“I’m sorry,” she murmured, leaning over to press another kiss to his forehead. “I should have been the one to catch you.”

“It’s okay, Di,” Bruce responded, adorably serious in a loopy way. He looked up at her with his big dark eyes, face relaxed in a way she hadn’t seen before. “You’re still one of my best friends, I still love you.” With that, he broke into a wide grin before turning to Clark, “And I love you too!”

Clark just rolled his eyes, softly kissing the back of Bruce’s hand. Smiling at them, Diana knew that in the end it would be okay. For now, she could enjoy a Bruce who didn’t have the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Chapter Text

“Lantern,” Batman barked out. “Shazam, J’onn, I need to see you three after the meeting.”

Hal froze, nervously tapping his fingers against his arm. Being asked to stay after class was never a good thing, especially when your teacher, or well leader, happened to be Batman. However the inclusion of Billy, who was a kid, and J’onn, who had never done anything wrong in his life, ever, eased his concerns. Batsy had a soft spot for kids, which he had sneakily seen happen one time where Batman brought Billy a cookie from his butler. Those were damn good cookies in Hal’s opinion. J’onn gave a nodd, while Shazam shared a look with Hal.

The meeting went fine after that, even going so far as to reach out to the Young Justice and the Titans. While he didn’t have a kid under his wing, Hal had a soft spot for the ones that chose the life of heroism. Still, everything seemed to be running smoothly, even within the League itself. Repairs on the Watchtower would be completed in a week, meaning they could return to it and leave the Hall behind again.

Soon, the rest of the heroes filtered out of the room, all bidding their goodbyes as they had Cyborg Boom Tube them out, or as they flew off. Hal, Billy, and J’onn stayed back, remaining in their seats. Hal stood up half-way, nervously hovering over the chair. Batman glanced at the two exits before pressing something on his belt.

“I’ll get right to it,” Batman said, staring them all down before reaching up. The Bat promptly took off his cowl.

Hal fell over from shock, landing flat on his ass. Billy burst out laughing, while Bruce Fucking Wayne stared down at him with an exasperated look he had seen from Batman in the past. There was nothing Hal could do but stare open mouthed at Bat-Bruce Wayne, not bothering to pull himself up off the ground. Now that he got a good look at him, Hal had to admit Wayne wasn’t bad looking. His jaw was damn near perfect, hair a little messy from being under the cowl, and face, objectively, attractive.

“Lantern,” Bruce Wayne growled in that low Batman register. It sounded more human without the modulator. “If you cannot be professional then it seems I’ve made an oversight.”

“Uh- n- no, I can uh…” Hal trailed off, using his ring to pull himself up off the floor. “I can be professional. Yep. Professional is my middle name, Bruce Wayne.”

He chuckled nervously, not knowing what to do other than wink at BRUCE FUCKING WAYNE . In truth, he could tell he was failing the situation. Afterall, Batman wouldn’t just reveal his identity for no reason. Well, Hal never expected to learn Batman’s identity. In a way he felt honored, but far too shaken to really process it in the moment.

“Green Lantern, would you mind thinking more quietly,” J’onn asked, hand rubbing his head.

Hal shot him a sheepish look, apologizing mentally to the Martian.

“Hmm,” Wayne hummed. “Well. There is a reason I asked you three to stay behind, and why I’ve chosen to share my identity with you. Clark, Diana, and I need your help on this mission.”

Hal let out a snort, “You? Need my help? J’onn I understand, Batson? Maybe. If you needed muscle, but Bats, I thought you hated me.”

Shocking blue eyes twisted in amusement, one black eyebrow raising with a frown, “I don’t hate you. I find you mildly annoying, but useful when the time comes. And… I still consider you an… acquaintance.”

“Aw, shucks, Spooky, didn’t know you cared.”

Wayne reached up, sliding the cowl back into place to mask his face again. He didn’t respond back to Hal, but instead turned to the other two, with a hand gesturing to Hal.

“This is a covert mission, requiring us to go in our civilian identities. This is why I have chosen to share mine. There’s a Wayne Foundation Gala that Diana, Clark and I believe to be the target of a mysterious group that’s been stealing from my resources for the past month. So far they haven’t taken anything of importance, nothing that would lead us to determine what they're after. Except for this,” Batman monologue, tapping on his wrist to project an object.

To Hal, it didn’t look all that interesting. It was a small device with pointed ends. It looked no larger than the size of a human eye, but not in shape. Hal didn’t see what the big deal was. Still, someone stealing from Wayne- now that he knew that Wayne was Batman- didn’t seem like a good thing in general.

“This relates to the invasion situation Kal-El mentioned in the briefing today, yes?” J’onn asked, voice smooth like a river, as always. “I have heard word of foreign thieves on my end. My position in the government allows me access to records. I know the President is covering up a UFO crash site.”

Batman nodded, “Yes. You and Lantern are our alien experts, and Shazam I need you there as muscle due to Superman being out of the equation.”

Hal crossed his arms, “Supes gets to skip?”

The side of Batman’s mouth quirked up, “Lois is getting married. Clark was her Best Man.”

“Huh.”

“Regardless, Shazam I will need you to go as Robin’s plus one, a friend he brought to keep company. Stay close to him, follow his lead.”

Billy gave Batman a mock salute, grinning that cheesy child-like smile. Honestly, Hal is surprised they hadn’t realized Shazam was a kid from the start. It was all there in his mannerisms.

“J’onn and Hal, I need you to be the ears out on the floor. If you hear anything suspicious, come to me. The device here, the one the invaders stole, is part of our expansion in creating a wormhole that travels across universes. Ever since the discovery of Earth-2, we’ve been attempting to break the barrier and find more. Even without knowing their motives, the fact that they knew it existed is bad enough. Nothing good comes from stealing tech like this.”

Hal raised an eyebrow, “That doesn’t explain why they would be at the Gala.”

“They would need an energy source. Something large, and something big one that runs continuously. This gala is where Wayne Tech will be revealing o- their new clean energy source idea, with a demonstration planned.”

“Right,” Hal drawled, leaning his weight back. “So, you need us because Supes can’t make it, and there’s a possible alien invasion? The little critters that disguise themselves as humans?”

“Yes. Diana will be there too, as my date. As well as Nightwing, Dick, and Robin, Jason.”

“Cool, this will totally go as planned, won’t it.”

Billy let out a booming laugh, patting Hal on the shoulder, “When does anything we do?”

“I for one,” J’onn cut off, giving them all a slight smile, “have faith in us.”

“Thank you, J’onn. Oh, and one more thing, tell anyone about me or my kids, you will regret what happens,” Batman hissed, glaring at both Shazam and Hal.

“Harold Jordan!” a loud  voice called from somewhere deep in the pit of rich white socialites.

Hal tensed upon being addressed by his full name, honestly hating it. It made him sound old! Still, he turned to face none other than Brucie Wayne with one Diana Prince draping off his arm. Hal offered them both a fake smile, not wanting to deal with the billionaire and conservator.

“Bruce Wayne, please call me Hal,” Hal greeted, holding his hand out to shake. “I wasn’t aware you knew of me.”

Brucie winked at him, leaning into his space, “How could I not? You’re one of the most impressive pilots the Air Force has had! I’ve heard all about you from the papers.”

God he really knew how to play up the charms. The suit he wore fit him perfectly, face bright and beautiful in the sea of rich people. He stood out in a crowd, Hal admitted, and he could see why he was Gotham’s most eligible bachelor.

“So you must have heard about my early retirement then.”

“Oh nonsense, that was a moment of bad circumstances. I’m just lucky to get a word in with you. Oh! Have you met my date? Diana Prince?”

Diana smiled at him, sharing a look with Hal. Ah, so she felt the same as he did about all of this. That was good to know.

“Wonderful to meet you,” Diana greeted, accidentally curling softly around her vowels.

“Hey, Di,” Brucie said suddenly, as if remembering something, “why don’t you get me and Hal some drinks. Thanks, love.”

Huffing in fond amusement, Diana placed a kiss on his cheek before stalking off through the crowd. It was impressive how the Amazonian blended in with the crowd, despite her towering height. Yet, it did look like she belonged there in her tight white dress and elegant jewelry.

Brucie wrapped an arm around Hal’s shoulder, pulling him in the other direction. He leaned ever closer, mouth right near Hal’s ear as his other hand rested on Hal’s chest. For the first time since the night started, Hal nearly broke character. He had seen Batman smile once, had listened to him giggle , but all of this, the touching, the blinding smiles, it was all disorientating, almost too much. Not to mention it was also making his heart speed up and body warm.

But now that he knew the truth, it was easy to see through the Brucie act. Wayne’s blue eyes didn’t match the smile that sat on his face, they also didn’t hold the look of someone who was halfway on his way to being drunk. His stumbling was purposeful, laughs forced.

When he spoke, Wayne’s breath ghosted his ear, “Laugh like I said something funny. J’onn is meeting us in the back to regroup for a minute, then I’m sending you to find Shazam. Diana is keeping a look out in the room.”

Hal swallowed, giving a fake, but convincing laugh, as Wayne continued pulling him towards the exit. Honestly, he wasn’t sure what to do here. First off, Batman, Bruce Wayne, was hanging all over him like Bruce was a coat and Hal was a coat rack. Second, Hal wasn’t unfamiliar with flirting with and being flirted with by men, but the way Brucie played into it was a little overwhelming. Especially now that he knew that Bruce Wayne was Batman. And honestly? Hal… liked it.

Finally, they reached the outer halls of the banquet. John was already there, still disguised, but nodded at the two with a slight smile. It was almost impossible to read the Martian’s expressions, but when he wanted them read, J’onn made it easy.

“Hello,” he greeted, “I haven’t uncovered anything on my end.”

The moment they got within range of John, Wayne immediately detached himself from Hal, putting a good distance between the two. He brushed off invisible dirt from his suit, avoiding Hal’s eyes. Hal missed the warmth of the other man’s body, but pushed that idea away for now.

Bruce spoke up first, “No one has proven themselves suspicious on my end either. Hal only just got here, so I doubt he’s picked up on anything. J’onn, do you think we’re going to have to take step 2?”

John quirked an eyebrow, “You really believe that is necessary?”

“What better way to draw out a thief than another thief?” Wayne responded, a sickly smile dripping from that face.

Hal didn’t like it, it didn’t look right on the billionaire's face. Then Wayne’s words caught up to him.

“Wait, wait, wait, what’s happening?”

“Step two,” John responded cryptically, and frankly, it was really unhelpful. He gave them both a smile before stalking off down the hall. Halfway down, he stopped, “Magpie or Catwoman?”

“Catwoman. She’s more agreeable.”

J’onn let out a clear laugh before disappearing around the corner. The atmosphere suddenly took a 180 with Wayne just standing there, running a hand through his hair. Hal wasn’t sure what to do, or what to say. Wayne had mentioned something about talking to Billy, but he also hadn’t dismissed Hal.

“Uh… Wayne?”

Wayne shot him a frown, before suddenly looking down the hall in the opposite direction that J’onn had left. It was a second later that Hal himself heard them, footsteps. Bruce glanced over to him, before pushing him right up against the wall and getting in his space.

“Sorry about this,” Wayne murmured, “would look suspicious if we were just here for no reason. Hope you don’t mind.”

“Uh- I- what?” Hal asked, heart hammering in his chest.

Honestly, all that was on his mind was how close Bruce was to him. God how had it taken him till now to realize Batman was hot. Well, to be fair he’s always been lowkey attracted to the Dark Knight. Hey! Even he wasn’t immune to the dark and dangerous pull. But that had been out of the equation since he started with Barry, and Supes and Diana claimed Bruce. Still… it wasn’t like he hadn’t thought about it time and time again. Hell, Barry had admitted something similar. So here now, pressed against a wall with Bruce Wayne, Batman, pinning him there, was well… Something.

Then there were lips, softly trailing just below his jawline down to his ear. From the side of his eye, he watched as some random woman stepped into the space they were in and gasp, covering her mouth.

Brucie pulled back, smirk infuriatingly teasing, but eyes bright in honest amusement, “What’s wrong fly boy? Cat got your tongue?”

Hal could only stammer, desperately trying to stop the blush in his face from showing. The socialite behind them flushed a bright read, quickly exiting the space. When she seemed to be a safe distance away, Wayne pulled away again.

Awkwardly, Hal shot Wayne some finger guns, “Uhhh nice. Smart thinking. I mean uh- yeah.”

“I’m sorry if I overstepped your bounds,” Wayne grumbled, “I hope you know I wasn’t attempting-”

“No!” Hal shouted loudly, wincing as it echoed a bit, “uh. No. I get it. It’s alright, Spooky. No boundaries crossed. Though I wouldn’t mind if you crossed them again. Wait, oh my god did I say that outloud.”

Wayne let out a vibrant laugh, one that seemed to pull itself from his chest without his approval. He grinned at Hal while clapping him on the shoulder. Hal’s face lit up like a christmas tree, and he desperately wished for his mask. Fuck, he really had made a mess of the situation.

“Hal, ask me again some other time, when I don’t have to be Brucie Wayne. And after you talk to Barry before you jump into something,” Bruce responded, smiling bright and real at Hal.

Hal whistled, and shoved his hands in his pockets, “Cannnn do. Right yeah. You’re right. Cool I’m gonna go find Billy like you said. Uh. Bye.”

Barry fell over laughing, twisting away from Hal, “You left???

“What the fuck was I supposed to do!” Hal screeched back, throwing his hands in the air. “Bare, pleaseee. You’re not helping me here! I’m in the middle of a gay panic!!”

“It’s fucking hilarious,” Barry wheezed, but turned back and pulled Hal back against his chest. He poked his boyfriend in the center of his chest, “you are a dumbass bisexual.”

“Takes one to know one.”

“You know, sometimes I wonder why I like you”

“It’s my dashing good looks and my irresistible charm.”

Barry snorted, “Right, I’d like to see you charm my pants off.”

“That can be arranged.”

Grinning mischievously, Hal turned them over so he was sitting over Barry, tickling his fingers up the speedster’s side. Barry squirmed under him, letting out huffing laughter as he tried to stop Hal’s movements.

“Stop!! I give up, you win,” Barry breathed, panting as he tried to get his breath, “you’re a menace.”

“Yes, a menace who is having a crisis over being attracted to Batman . He was fucking smiling and laughing . What the fuck do I do with that!!”

Barry laughed again, pulling Hal flat against his chest, “You say that as if a: this is the first time and b: you’re alone in that.”

“What does that mean!?”

“Half the league is horny for him! I mean it's right there!"

Ha gaped, “Are you!?”

Snorting, Barry lowered his voice back down, “Oh god no, no no no no. Batman is like my, uh my dad.”

“Well now this just makes everything weird,” Hal groaned, flopping back down on the bed. “Barry you can’t just say things like that .”

“I said like my dad not he is my dad! Hal, please, I don’t care if you bone him,” Barry huffed, brushing a hand through Hal’s hair.

Hal let out a long sigh, burying his face in Barry’s neck. He took a moment to breathe in Barry’s scent, calming him with the comfort of his arms. The sight of Bruce’s genuine smile aimed at him. Fuck, he was so fucked.

Chapter 4

Summary:

movie night and bruce is open, shockingly

Notes:

okay this chapter is lowkey rushed bc it was hard for me to write??? like i uh. i relate a lot to Ezra Miller's portrayal of Barry Allen, but despite my love for his version of the character I found him very hard to write??? at least from his pov with this chapter. Anyway, im sorry if its subpar or worse than the others. I just wanted to get it out uwu

also Jason is still Robin in this chapter, but i can tell you the next one jumps a bunch of years in time to when Damian is Robin. So dick is like. 19 here, Barbara is not yet paralyzed and obviously, Jason hasn't died yet

Chapter Text

In all honesty, Barry found Wayne Manor to be intimidating. Not just because it was Bruce Wayne’s home, years of generations put into it, but because it was Batman’s home. And while Bruce had given him an open invitation to stop by anytime (which… really could be any time seeing as Barry could get there from Central city in less than ten minutes…) Barry hadn’t yet stopped by without being dragged there by Dick or Jason.

In his defense the place was intimidating with all of its grand halls and elegant walls. Barry never had the opportunity or desire to stop by on his own, even if Bats had taken him under his wing like another son. Billy, he knew, stopped by plenty of times to hang out with Jason, Tim, and Cass. He knew that Billy was in the same boat as him, but less awkward.

Barry wasn’t sure why he found himself a mile down the road from said home just staring. For once in his life, he just… stood still. Unsure, unmoving. Even before his powers, Barry had never really taken the time to slow down. Not with his brain racing nonstop, leg bouncing and energy at its high. The accident just made that even worse, now that he could do it in speed.

Inhaling, Barry sped forward, watching his blue lightning sparking around him. It always seemed to encase him, like a hamster ball but lightning. He wasn’t sure why his was blue, not when the one that had hit him was yellow.

Before long, he found himself in front of Bruce’s door, pulling himself up to a stop. The lightning spiked out, attaching itself to anything that could carry a current before fading out. He used to worry about the effects of his powers, worrying that the discharge would latch onto something and cause damage. But overtime, he realized that it was just the runoff of his powers, not intending to cause damage but to release the speed force and kinetic energy.

“Are you going to just stand there, or knock?” a snarky voice calls over the intercom.

“Oh hey- I uh- I just wanted to see if you’re busy, or if I was okay to stop by. I mean I know Bruce-”

Jason opened the door, leveling Barry with a look that effectively cut off his rambling, “Dude, just get your ass in.”

“Language, Master Jason,” Alfred responded primly, closing the door behind them. The butler took a dazed Barry’s coat from him, before disappearing down the hall.

Barry shifted in place, running a hand through his black hair. His hands fidgeted around his sides as he trailed after Jason. Soon they reached one of the sitting rooms that had been effectively turned into a standard living room. It was the one Dick, Jason, and Barbara had taken over, filling it with bean bags and pillows. When they walked in, they were met with the sight of Dick and Barbara kissing on the couch.

“What the fuck,” Jason groaned, slamming a hand over his eyes, “can you shitheads get a fucking room?”

“Barry!” Barbara greeted too eagerly, sliding off of Dick to meet Barry with a hug.

Barry hugged her back, moving to accept on from Dick as well.

“Hi guys.”

Jason pushed past all three of them, flicking on the xbox and dropping down into one of the large bean bag chairs. He tossed the three of them a look before diverting his entire attention to Smash Bros.

Once again, Barry found himself unsure of what he should do. At least, until Dick and Barbara were tugging him over to the couch by his arms. Awkwardly, he was squished between them as a controller was shoved into his hands.

Barry let his control slip for a moment, speeding enough that the entire world around him moved almost imperceptibly. Inhaling, he opened and closed his hands a few times, expelling some of his nervous energy. With a slow exhale, he glanced around and realized that it was just them four. With that, he was able to relax and reign in his speed, slowing himself down back to normal time.

They played for a few hours, eventually tugging Jason up to lay against their laps as they shifted from games to movies. At some point Alfred had joined them while he cross-stitched, bringing snacks in with him.

“You cannot tell me that this is book-accurate at all ,” Barbara hissed, flicking the back of Jason’s head. “Percy didn’t fight Luke in the books!”

Dick leaned back, tossing a piece of popcorn into his mouth, “She’s right, Jaybird. It would’ve been cooler to see him fight Ares.”

Okay but, ” Jason growled, glaring at them, “it did give us an accurate portrayal of Grover and did an excellent job setting Percy up as a character! It didn’t shy away from the Smelly Gabe aspect of the books!!”

Barry grinned, letting them argue it out until they all suddenly turned to him. He shrugged, “I… honestly have not read the books.”

“Then agree with me, dipshit,” Jason bickered, tossing an MNM at Barry.

Cheating, Barry dropped his control a bit, enough to let him get in the exact position for the catch. When it landed, he simply grinned at Jason. A glare met him in return.

Alfred finally spoke up, clearing his room, “If you don’t mind me saying, young Masters and Mistress. I would simply say that the movies should be separate from the books, as they do not correctly portray the deeper meanings of the books. However, as standalone movies, they do tell a compelling story. Might I suggest Godzilla, as your next movie?”

Sticking his tongue out, Jason turned towards Alfred before agreeing, “Fuck yeah, monster movie!”

“Language,” Barbara, Dick, and Alfred called at the same time.

Barry barely suppressed a giggle. He got up the moment the movie ended to set up Godzilla while the others rearranged themselves on the couch. When he came back, he found himself now squished between Dick and Jason, with the younger boy draping his feet across Barry’s lap. Barry honestly didn’t mind, these people were fun to spend time with.

Half way through the movie, Dick and Barbara had fallen asleep tangled together, with Jason constantly whooping whenever Godzilla destroyed something. Barry chuckled, patting the kids shoulder as he turned to get up. When he did look up at the doorway, he froze.

Bruce also froze, uncharacteristically looking like a deer in headlights, but it was clear that he’s been standing there for a while, watching them. They simply looked at each other for a moment before Bruce relaxed, giving Barry a soft, fond smile. He nudged his head out the door before leaving. Barry slid out from the couch, keeping iron tight control on his speed so he didn’t suddenly go blasting after Bruce.

He caught up with Bruce soon enough, walking in tandem with the Bat as they strode down the halls of the manor. Both were silent for a bit.

“I enjoy having you here,” was the first thing Bruce said to break the silence, “You… the kids love you. Alfred enjoys having someone around who likes his cooking.”

“It’s great, honestly, really,” Barry stuttered out, “I uh- he somehow manages to keep up with my metabolism and that’s just. Wow.”

Bruce chuckled, something Barry wasn’t used to. Neither was this semi-relaxed, casual wear Bruce. It was slightly unnerving, but the more Barry took him in, the more Barry wished Bruce would let his guard down more often.

“Well, Barry,” Bruce said, pausing and placing a hand on the speedster’s shoulder. “I want you to know that my open offer to you is genuine. I consider you  family, and not just with the League.”

And that was- Wow.

Barry sputtered, not sure what to respond with that. This only furthered when Bruce ruffled his hair, an affectionate gesture Barry never expected from someone as stoic as The Batman. Bruce left with another smile, as Barry drifted back to the movie room in a haze.

Chapter 5

Chapter Text

"So the negotiations with the people of Lyria-"

CRASH

Billy winced, glancing up at Batman from across the room. The bat pause, breathing deeply before continuing.

"Negotiations with the people of Lyria have gone well thanks to Lantern's involvement. They don't seem to be too fond of J'onn, but as I understand it the Martians have a long history with them."

J'onn nods gravely, but doesn't speak up. Billy doesn't really understand half of what the league talks about, but he knows that what they do is important. He, personally, is more into fighting the bad guys and saving the day than the boring negotiations and work the other adults do. Still, they did have to get through the briefing.

A scream, angry not pained, shook through the room. Billy suppressed a giggle that quickly turned into an all out laugh when Barry broke down. Bruce effectively shot them both a glare, far more powerful now that he wasn't wearing his cowl.

"Do you think the children are alright," Diana asked sincerely, though amusement danced in her eyes. She really was pretty, and so out of his league. Heh. League.

Bruce grunted, responding bluntly, "They're fine."

Despite that, Barry and Clark both cast worried glances to the wall where the children sat on the other side. The only one not there was little Jon, since Clark decided that the four year old was not old enough to be alone with the others. Billy doesn't blame him, Darla would be too much for Jon even though she had matured with age. Mary sits to his side, looking professional as always.

Jon let out a little babble, something clearly Kryptonian but Billy hadn't bothered to learn the language like Diana and Bruce had.

"Continuing on," Oliver, broke in, "we've had reports of a reappearance of Damien Darhk. I've got Roy and Artemis keeping an eye on Star City, but Dinah and I are keeping tabs through Queen Consolidated as well."

Dinah cuts in, sliding her feet off the table, her blonde hair is pulled into a bun, "However, there's no confirmation or validity to these claims."

J'onn sat back, "So why bring it up at all?"

"Because-"

Billy tunes them out, thinking about that tiger he liberated a week ago. He hopes Tawny is doing good.

BANG.

And then- there's something that sounds awfully like an explosion, followed by another scream.

The entire hall falls silent, a few of the heroes giving each other looks. Billy's been around them long enough for him to read that as "we have made a horrible mistake". However, Barry is losing his mind, and Clark looks seconds away from bursting into tears. That look only intensifies as he watches whatever's going on in the other room that causes someone to yell. A moment later there's another thud and the sound of rocks crumbling. Hal sighs, pushing his seat from the table.

Lantern stretches, and Billy can feel a few of his joints pop. Billy's own ache in sympathy. "Well," he says, "I better get going. There's a whole sector that won't patrol itself. Have fun with the kids."

In a flash of green, Lantern is gone.

Then all hell breaks loose.

First comes Kon and Wally, both speaking faster than anyone can understand, bursting through the doors. Through the small gap, Billy can see Victor on the ground, face down and unmoving. Beast boy seems to consider it a perfectly acceptable seat, as he's sitting atop the Cyborg with Raven trying to coax him off.

Second, Connor smashes through the wall, breathing deeply while M'gann trails after him looking nervous. This gap opens a new sight, Kaldur, Cass and Barbara taking refuge in the corner, with Donna in the center. Billy sees a flash of green, yellow, and red. Upon closer look, he's able to catch small glimpses of a three way wrestle between Cassie, Roy and Artemis.

Third, Billy sees his family in small glimpses spread out. The boys seem to have congregated in some weird king of the mountain formation, while Darla zooms about trying, and failing, to keep the peace.

And finally, fourth, comes from speech, rather than sight.

"PUSH HARDER YOU IMBECILE!"

Ah, Damian.

"I'm pushing as hard as I fucking can, demon!" Tim shouts back, followed by a low hiss from Damian. Billy thinks he can hear Jason's laughter, but isn't able to really see anything from his vantage point.

"Lil D, why did you have to get yourself stuck in a wall," Dick demoans, "this is literally the stupidest thing you've ever done."

Damian shrieks in outrage, "It's all TODD'S FAULT!"

Billy looks back to find the entire League... horrified.

"Uh," he gets out, but it seems to be enough to snap the League into action. The Star City duo immediately jump through the doors to break up the wrestling match. Clark and Barry try to placate Wally, Kon and Connor while J'onn accompanies a worried M'gann back into the room. Billy follows the others out into the room where the sight of Damian half in and half out of a wall, with Jason (and Steph if the voices he hears are correct) presumably pulling from one side, and Dick and Time push from the other.

The moment the adult heroes walk in, everything just stops. Damian stares at Bruce horrified, while several members of both sides attempt not to break out into laughter. Billy can't say he's really winning that battle though.

"Damian."

"Father."

"Why," Bruce sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose, "are you stuck in a wall."

"Well," Damian articulates, as punctual as ever. "Kent over there got angry and punched the wall. It was small but I boasted about how it wasn't too small for me. My training has allowed me the ability to squeeze into small, confined spaces. When I said this, Todd implied that my training would fail and I would not make it through at all. In an attempt to show him how stupid he is, I climbed in. I'm got stuck, as you can see."

Bruce took in a deep breath, no one dared to move.

A second past and then-

Bruce broke down laughing.

It started with a quiet snort, turning into light snickers as Bruce tried to tamp them down. But before long, they had turned into full-belly laughs, shaking the man's frame as he hunched in on himself. Actual fucking tears were falling from the man's eyes due to the effort of laughing. Billy believed for a moment that he was in some weird alternate universe, but the Barry broke down beside him and soon the whole room was full of laughing heroes, adults and kids alike. The only one not laughing, was Damian.

"It's amazing to see you are all finding enjoyment out of my misery," he yelled, "but I do not enjoy being humiliated. Get me out now!"

Bruce bent in half, dropping to his knees on the floor as he kept laughing. Diana had to step in and pull him out, while the rest of the League seemed to remember that Bruce, BATMAN was the one laughing his ass off.

"Are- is he okay?" Arthur questioned, one eyebrow raised and voice hesitant. "He doesn't seem okay, should we do something?"

Clark sighed, "No, no. He'll be done soon. The kids just... manage to pull this side of him out. Damian especially."

"Ah."

Billy had to admit, a room full of gobsmacked heroes was one of the best things he had seen that year.

Notes:

also i realized that things may not be consistant, and i doubt my tenses are,, so i'll go back through some day and make edits !!

Chapter 6

Summary:

you know that lego batman that's a fairy and pink? yeah that

also i'm sorry this chapter is short and not as good but if i didnt post it now it never would be

Chapter Text

Jason continued laughing as Bruce stood there, wanting so desperately to crawl out of his skin. He could get out of patrolling for one night, but unfortunately there was a League meeting, and Jason had decided to pick that day to cash in the rewards of his bet.

WHY IS FATHER DRESSED IN PINK, TODD?” Damian screeched at the older man. The boy’s face was flush with anger, and Bruce honestly agreed with the sentiment. “It’s humiliating to not only him but all of us as well!”

“Damian,” Bruce scolded, lackluster.

Jason however, beat him to it, “Listen, shithead, B here lost a bet. I won. Which means he has to wear what I chose for a day.”

“So you dressed me up as a fairy,” Bruce deadpanned, more of an accusation than a question.

The batsuit had been painted pink, which meant that Jason had spent all night doing this. He just hoped the paint would come off later. The wings barely fit around his arms, straining against the armour of the suit. Thankfully, Jason had been kind enough to get a fairly small tutu. In all, Bruce would be able to move, but not fight.

Hopefully no world ending disaster came up.

“Hey have you- holy shit, Bruce? ” Dick cried, sliding down the rest of the stairs on the banister.

The man stopped with a flawless landing, but Bruce was already cursing Alfred for installing the railing. All his kids were so damn dramatic.

“Dick,” Bruce greeted with a curt nod, frowning.

Dick’s jaw dropped, eyes flicking between Jason convulsing on the floor in laughter, and Bruce desperately trying to drop dead where he stood. Damian continued shrieking at Jason, hissing threats and the like. Honestly, Bruce was just thankful none of the others were there.

Damian pinched the bridge of his nose, head turned up as he stormed over to his bike.

“When this nonsense ends, please do inform me. Until then I’ll be out.”

Bruce goes to protest, but stops at Dick’s look, reminded of a conversation they had about boundaries and freedom. Instead he sighs, and watches as his youngest goes driving off. Jason seems to get a hold of himself at the sound of a bike engine, pulling himself up off the floor.

“Wow, can’t believe the brat left,” Jason chuckles, clapping Dick on the shoulder.

Bruce turned, fixing Jason with a glare that only sent the man into a fit of laughter once again. In this outfit, Bruce didn’t think he came off as particularly menacing. Which would be… difficult on patrol, but nearly impossible with the League.

As if the universe could read his mind, his alarm for the meeting beeped, alerting him to the time and impending doom.

“I have to go,” he said, turning with a swish of his (pink) cape. The two behind him only collapsed into even louder giggling, as he got towards the Zeta tube.

The loud snorts faded behind the portal, as Bruce zipped himself up to the Watchtower. Thankfully no one met him there, with the Zeta room empty. He let out a sigh, stepping further into the satellite, heading down to the meeting room with his usually imposing stride.

“B!” Clark cheered even before he turned the corner. But then the Kryptonian pulled up short when Bruce finally did reveal himself.

The hall went silent, everyone staring at him with ridiculous looks on their faces. Barry’s was red from trying not to laugh, and Hal looked like he was going crazy. The only one uncaring was J’onn.

“Stop gawking, we have a meeting to discuss!” he barked, storming past Diana to reach his actual seat. There were a few chuckles behind him, stifled as if the person was trying to hide them, or stop themself from laughing.

The meeting went… very distractedly. More than once, Bruce had to snap Oliver out of his dazed staring, and Bruce had needed to threaten even Dinah once. Diana wouldn’t even stop smiling, and Hal and Barry laughed when they thought Bruce wasn’t looking.

“Alright,” he finally said, slamming his papers on the table, “this isn’t conducive to productivity. Go ahead, laugh and get it out of your system.”

Several in the hall proceeded to collapse in laughter, clinging onto each other as they tried to catch their breath, Clark and Diana were merely grinning at him, with J’onn smiling.

“Why are you dressed like that, B?” Clark asked, over the sound of everyone losing it.

Bruce sighed, pulling the cowl off to brush a hand through his hair, “Lost a bet with Jason.”

Clark snorted, snickering behind his hand, “Makes sense.”

Well, at least everyone was getting a kick out of it.

Notes:

Okay all characters are basically mash ups of their DCAU/DCEU/Young Justice/Arrowverse versions like,, a lot
ALSO IF YOURE READING THIS IN 2024, i would probably rewrite a LOT of this, I don't agree with a lot of this anymore.
