Work Text:
The fight was incredible in Bakugou’s opinion
Todoroki Shouto versus Bakugou Katsuki. Both third years. Both competing for their chance to get first place in this year's sports festival. Their last sports festival. Ever . It was a chance for both of them to prove themselves one final time before they officially become pro-hero’s.
Midoirya won last year. Much to Bakugou’s anger from his spot in third place and Todoroki’s encouraging smile to both of them from second. God that smile . Soft, precious, and charmed. Ugh. He should’ve kissed that thing off his face right then and there. The three of them had shared the podium for last year. But now? It came down to Bakugou and Todoroki. Not Deku. Just Bakugou and Todoroki.
He’d heard the word incredible thrown around a couple of times from his teammates between the end of the fight and stepping up to the podium to receive his second place medal, and on the way back to the locker room. Todoroki and he were both going at it with everything they had, he could feel the rush in his blood. Bringing him to life. flame’s mixing with explosions. Ice being torn apart by eardrum shattering blasts. Spikes flying off into the sides of the stand. Heat rising and rising. Then a hit. Bakugou had seen it be successful maybe two times. Todoroki had been working on creating balls of ice that he could throw at people.
Previously he’d had watched the successful attempts knock out iida, and completely wind Midoriya when it caught him off guard once. All other times had involved thick chunks of ice collapsing into the ground, or breaking the second they met concrete. He remembered Todoroki's frustration. They’d traded their usual places. Where, normally, Todoroki sat and watched silently as Bakugou destroyed objects, and worked on a new move, Bakugou had sat for weeks and watched his partner throw around small piles of melting ice in an attempt to perfect this technique.
Now seeing it, live and successful was a rush. He knew what to expect, he’d seen Todoroki make that motion with his hands, as though he were holding an invisible beach ball, but it was already too late, and he was slammed against the stadium walls, gasping for the air his lungs were suddenly deprived. The crowd cheered loudly. Louder than he'd ever heard. Deafening him. He’d stared at the triumphant face of his boyfriend, smiling brightly. Delighted. He slammed his hand against his chest, gasping in delight, and Bakugou could see him mouthing ‘I won?’ In disbelief.
Now standing on the opposite side of the locker room. He could see Todoroki smiling brilliantly. Gold medal hanging around his neck. He fiddles with it absently as he talks to Ochako and Iida. Bakugou just wants to go over there and kiss his boyfriend.
They’d been dating for five months now, secretly. Initially, it was justified by both of them claiming they were worried it wouldn’t last. Though now it was obvious that it was going to, at least for a little while, it felt like they had kept it secret for too long, and neither really knew how to breach the topic with their friends. Bakugou really wishes they could be more open about this whole thing.
During the battle Bakugou had accidents inflicted a vicious burn onto his boyfriend that had licked up his spine and left arm. Todoroki made the mistake of turning away from the blast, and the explosion had been far closer than either anticipated. It had been cleaned and bandaged of course but it could scar, and Todorokis absent picking at the bandages was making it clear he was trying to avoid scratching it.
God, it might scar . He clenches his fist tightly.
He sees Todoroki glance over at him then. His eyes ghost down to Bakugou’s closed fist, and he looks away quickly. Bakugou unclenches his hands. He can see Todoroki’s elation dim a little. Bakugou groans internally. Wishing he could walk over and grin heartily and congratulate Todoroki on his win. His boyfriend would be surprised, he always was when Bakugou was openly joyful like that, but then he’d smile, then he kiss him-
Bakugou felt his cheeks turn red, and he scowled. Ok, not helping things if Todoroki saw that and misinterpreted it. They’d talk later but until then he’d have to suffer in the lack of knowledge.
Or he could just walk over and kiss Todoroki. Congratulate him, call him sexy, and powerful and fucking incredible for beating him, for pulling that trick out, when he’d been struggling so much.
He could.
Todoroki and he make eye contact.
Five months they’d been together, almost six.
Would Todoroki be ok with them coming out? They had discussed it…
Ugh. This was so unlike him. Getting worried over another person? Ridiculous.
But…
He could just congratulate Todoroki on his achievement. He’d begrudgingly done so last year when Deku won. Todoroki would be far, far easier to support because he wasn’t at risk of stupid comment. Bakugou turns and walks over before he can change his mind. Feeling oddly nervous.
“Hey,” Bakugou says, as he walks over, Ochako and Iida jump and back away, incidentally leaving a direct path for him. His voice is slightly horse, god this isn’t a big deal, they talk about random crap all the time, others may even consider them friends. Congratulating Todoroki on his win is hardly anything. “Wasn’t expecting you to have mastered that trick so quickly.” Bakugou says instead.
“I didn’t realise what I was doing, it just came out of me,” Todoroki explains sheepishly. He smiles a little, pulling on his bandage now. Bakugou’s eyes dart down to Todorki’s arm. “I didn’t think I’d win this year.” Todoroki admits, oblivious to them all looking at where he tries not to scratch at his burns.
“Why?” Bakugou barks and Todoroki rolls his eyes, momentarily drawing Bakugou’s attention away from his itching hands.
“I’m surprised either of us got through. Midoriya and you had a pretty close battle,” too close really. Bakugou knows Midoriya usually has the upper hand, in almost every battle except that one, because Midoriya might be able to catch himself on occasion, but in the heat of battle the ditz seemed to forget he wasn’t allowed to exit the arena. Thus, Bakugou was declared the winner because he took a wrong step.
Bakugou would be pissed off by the easy win if he hadn’t been inches away from collapsing to his knees.
“Like I’d let that loser defeat me!” He scoffs, crossing his arms and looking away. Todoroki laughs and shakes his head. Fringe flopping in his face. He can see directly through Bakugou’s deflection.
They both look at each other for a moment there. Eyes meeting. Todoroki calmed and whatever doubts Bakugou’s behaviour may have caused are resolved. Bakugou himself was just glad he didn’t leave his boyfriend anxious and upset all afternoon.
Todoroki picks at his bandages again. They’re slightly dirty at the ends from where he’s touched them. Bakugou can see the soft, vulnerable wound underneath. Only just peering out at him. Bakugou frowns.
“Stop fucking scratching!”
“It’s itchy! ” Todoroki bemoans and Bakugou grunts.
“You’re gonna get an infection,” Bakugou replies “I don’t think it should be itchy anyway.”
Todoroki scoffs. Brushes his hair out of his face. He really needs a cut. Or a hair tie. Both seem equally as difficult to acquire for the teen.
“You're an idiot. Shouldn’t have freaking turned,” Bakugou commented as he pulled back. He tugs on Shoutos arm “come on, you need to get that looked at again. And rebandaged” He grabs Todoroki’s hand, the one that didn't get burned and he gently guides him towards the exit of the locker room before he can think.
Halfway through the room Bakugou’s suddenly very aware of the eyes staring at him.
It hits him. They’re holding hands in the middle of the locker room. Filled with all their friends, and classmates who think they’re mortal enemies at worst and begrudgingly friends at best.
To Bakugou, he’s holding hands with his boyfriend in the middle of that locker room. Todoroki seems to have the same thought.
“Katsuki,” he mumbles softly, looking towards his partner.
Todoroki never calls his Katsuki in public, especially not at school. There's a hopeful look in his eyes.
Yeah, fuck it.
Bakugou smirks and steps forward, his hand comes up to cup Shouto’s face.
Bakugou presses forward and kisses his boyfriend, and, ah yes, Todoroki melts slightly. Doesn’t kiss back right away. Then, oh, then he kisses back and smiles into the kiss.
“You were so hot when you beat me,” he rushes out “so fucking pleased with yourself.” that may be a little too sexual for this scenario but it’s true.
“Yeah, cause I won!” Todoroki laughs, pulling back. He looks so happy when he smiles. Pure delight evident on his face.
Bakugou rolls his eyes, and Todoroki leans in for another kiss which Bakugou accepts before pulling back and tugging on Shouto’s hand “Come on,” one more light kiss, just to be safe, and then he’s dragging his boyfriend out of that room, leaving behind a bunch of stunned classmates.’
They’re already at the end of the corridor when they hear Mina cry out loudly
“What!”
----------
Bakugou knows that, as soon as he gets back to the dorm that night, there will be a litany of good hearted harassment from the group of extras he’s become friends with. Somehow.
After they’d gone to the infirmary and gotten Todoroki’s bandages reapplied, they’d managed to ditch everyone else in favour of exploring the stands outside the stadium and getting some food. He’d swung his arm around Todoroki’s shoulders and smiled, feeling a weird sense of relief. The unspoken choice to come out carrying far less weight than he thought it would.
But as nice as exploring the stalls and hanging out may be, they did have to go back to the dorms and face the music. Bakugou would have to go back and have his friends rib him for who knows how long and grill him for every detail of his relationship.
It’s mid afternoon when they get back, third years basically have free rein to do whatever after the tournament finishes for them so without any teachers trying to herd them back onto a bus and back to school. There’s bound to be a few people who are staying with their parents or are out for the night partying anyway so them not coming back immediately isn’t going to cause anyone strife. Bakugou hopes that his friends are apart of the latter group and have decided to go back to someone’s house or something. But they’re so eclectic he has no idea what any of their plans were, there had been some half hearted talk but nothing affirmative.
Todoroki’s friends have apparently just left UA to go out for dinner somewhere,, which ends with Bakugou watching his boyfriend get changed in record time, and rush off to meet up with them at the gates. Free of the fear of being attacked by questions as Bakugou is.
As soon as he gets into his dorm room it starts.
He’s not surprised that they’re all sitting in his dorm room, it’s become a prime hang out spot over the years when the living room is taken and they cant be bothered to leave the dorms.
“Are you and Todoroki dating?” Mina yells excitedly from where she’s sitting on Bakugou’s bed. Rating for that question? Not the worst. A reasonable question, five out of ten.
“Dude that's so amazing, how’d you get him to surpass his programming?” Bad joke Sero. Three.
“Does he actually have a real heart?” Unoriginal, Denki. Two.
“Oh come on, Todorki’s an Ice King not a robot!” Kirishima adds. Ok, not too bad. Bakugou admittedly has made that one, though in a vastly different circumstance. Six.
“His heart’s on his right side, the fire side, it should be hot!” Denki counters.
“Maybe it’s burnt,” Jirou adds unhelpfully from where she's sitting on the purple and black bean bag she brought in, mostly ignoring them all in favour of her phone. The other four begin arguing about what type of creature Todoroki is, ignoring Jirou’s input and Bakugou huffs, it’s telling that no one even reacts to him.
“What are you doing in my room?” he barks at them all when he doesn’t get a single response. Interrupting the frenzied chatter of the maniacs he’s chosen as friends. They all look at him, confused. As if the simple fact they’re invading her personal space is something that needs to be explicitly explained.
“Hanging out?” Mina states and he can clearly hear the ‘duh’ she isn’t adding to the end of that sentence. “Are you dating?” She asks again.
Bakugou ignores the question in favour of throwing his bag into the corner of his room and going into his mini fridge. He takes out a soda.
“So?” Kirishima pushes “dude, I’ve never realised you were gay,” Bakugou pauses. Stops drinking, scoffs.
“I’m not.” huh, now that he thinks about it he never really did come out did he.
“You’re not?” Sero asks, disbelieving.
“You did kiss Todoroki Shouto in the middle of the locker room. I’m like almost a hundred percent sure he’s a dude,” Kirishima states.
“ Are. You. Dating ?” Mina asks again.
He takes another sip of his drink.
“You’re not getting angry about it!” Denki’s excited, Bakugou can tell by his tone.
“I'm bi,” he states then hesitates before he admits “and yeah we’re together, or whatever,” They at the very least deserve a straight answer out of him.
They go crazy.
He watches as Mina pumps her fists in the air, yelling at him happily. Denki and Sero shriek. Idiots. Denki falls off of Bakugou’s bed when Sero accidentally kicks him as well, and he has to seriously control himself to stop from laughing and choking on his drink. Kirishima almost falls entirely off the bed himself when he tries to catch Kamanari. He only half falls on the floor, shouting loudly at Sero and he tries to comfort Kamanari where he’s sprawled on the floor. Jirou doesn’t contain herself and her almost hysterical laughter fills the room as she watches the scene in front of her.
Underneath them, Shouji slams the roof of his room loudly several times in protest of the incorrigible shouting he’s hearing above him.
“Stop that you fucking spider!” Bakugou can’t help but yell out. Slamming his foot down on the floor in retaliation and firing off a few small explosions to emphasise his point. He hears Shoji's muffled sigh.
When he looks over to Jirou again, she’s composed herself, and is now just smiling infectiously. He moves over to sit with her, leaning against the wall beside her while the others try to sort themselves out. Kamanari is still spread out on the floor. Kirishima is now on the floor. Mina is kneeling beside them. It's not going well.
“Congrats,” Jirou tells him as the other four members of their group continue their endless shouting and dissolve into incoherent noises being spewed at one another.
Bakugou takes another sip of his drink.
“Thanks.”
“So a week or a year?”
Bakugou rolls his eyes “five months.”
“You know I never would've guessed you were with Todoroki of all people.” Bakugou rolls his eyes. He can hear that she’s happy for him.
And hey, at least the reaction from his friends was positive.
If noisy.
----------
It’s not that Todoroki is particularly avoiding the topic, but he must admit he doesn’t exactly want to have the well meaning judgement of his friends cast upon him over his relationship with Bakugou.
So he acts as though the sports festival didn’t happen. As though he didn’t kiss Bakugou in that locker room. As though he wasn’t just a little in love with him, and endeared when he’d kissed him in the locker room, and clearly said to everyone, this is my boyfriend.
He played that kiss over a million times in his head, even though they’ve kissed so many times before and after that one.
Back to the topic at hand, he’d been avoiding talking about anything Bakugou related with his friends.
When they’d all gone out together that night after the sports festival the air had been filled with happiness and excitement. It felt like this marked the beginning of the end, they were almost done with high school, months left of their education. Almost at the point where they would become real pro-hero’s. Bakugou didn’t come up in their eager chatter of their post school plans, and thoughts on which first year would win their segment of the tournament.
But as the days dragged on, and they’d spent a week avoiding the topic, Todoroki could feel his friends getting antsy to bring it up. He could see them wanting to ask every time they saw Bakugou talking with Todoroki in the mornings (to organise their afternoon training sessions) or exiting the dorms on Friday (to go help her mother set up some new furniture in her apartment) or when they’re all hanging out together and he’s texting someone (his aunt, who’s constantly fretting over his aforementioned mother and everything she’s done since she started living her own life again).
Todoroki loves them all, but he’d just rather let things simply continue. Allow the status quo to remain. Avoid confrontation.
However, because his friends are persistent he realises that they will find a way to get him to open up about it whether he wants to or not. So he knows he will have to eventually talk about it, and if he has to, he’s going to be forced to do so, it’ll be on his own terms.
It took longer than he thought it would for an opportunity to present itself naturally. A whole two weeks in fact, before they’re sitting down in the cafeteria and the topic comes up.
They’re talking about Tsuyu’s recent date with a certain lizard headed young woman. A long time coming in Todoroki’s opinion, which he voices to the table.
Tsuyu laughs at that. “You’re one to talk.” She comments jokingly and Todoroki frowns a little. She must take it as him being confused because she elaborates “ it just seems all the arguing you and Bakugou have been doing throughout the years has been sexual tension.”
“Oh, uh-“ He blushes at her words “I wouldn’t say that, neither of us has the best self control.”
“That kiss did seem pretty heat of the moment.” Deku mentions off handedly.
Todoroki nods “it was, but we had been discussing telling everyone that we were together for a while.”
“So you and Bakugou really are together?” Uraraka ask, scandalised. Todoroki shovels soba into his mouth hastily to avoid responding, feeling slightly threatened by her surprised tone.
“It is an odd match up,” Iida comments. Midoriya nods
“Yeah, I always thought you guys didn’t get along,” Uraraka adds, a more well meaning tone making itself known. Todoroki swallows his mouthful and waits a few more seconds. Considering the words of his friends.
“Me and Bakugou get along well,” He states “and yes we’ve been seeing each other.”
“But why keep it from us?” Tsuyu asks, voice croaky as always. He feels the eyes of everyone at the table on him.
“it seemed like a good idea at the time,” and it really did when this started. Out in the cold after their respective friend groups had abandoned them outside after a party. It had been a brand new thing, and they’d both been unsure how long it would last and neither had wanted to have to tell everyone and then if they broke up to tell everyone that they had.
“Why are you two together anyway?” Iida asks “I thought you two didn’t get along.”
There are a lot of reasons. They, through some miracle, have come to understand the deepest parts of one another. They work really well together, and agree on a lot of things. Bakugou is smoking hot. But the one Todoroki finds himself blurting out is the simplest.
“I like him!” and maybe it comes out a little defensive.
“It’s just strange,” Iida comments, Todoroki smiles to himself at that comment, an idea striking him. He looks up from his noodles.
“How’s your love life Tenya?” It’s not mean, more teasing. Iida immediately blushes however. A vibrant red colour that spreads first across his cheeks then his whole face, his pale skin ensuring he’s redder than Todoroki’s hair.
“Uh-“ Iida shrugs “that is no-none of your concern!” He says, a little too loudly, drawing the eyes of some of the others in the cafeteria.
“Are you sure? I thought you said you were about to, y’know, confess?“ he tries to pry, though he knows the answer. Todoroki’s eyes dart to Midoriya who looks shocked by the news, and jealous. Ugh, he loves them but they’re insufferable.
“You’re about to confess!” Midoriya balks as he stands in alarm. It's so plain in his eyes: he’s definitely jealous. The pitch of his voice draws more eyes. Midoriya blushes when he notices, sitting back down quickly. He’s nervous as well and Todoroki shares a look with Ochako and Tsuyu before bursting into hysterical laughter at the obliviousness of their two love struck friends.
Bakugou is, thankfully, dropped from the conversation.
----------
That Friday finds Todoroki walking down with a backpack on his shoulders to the gates of UA. at her request, he’s going to spend the night with her at her new apartment now that she’s “officially” settled in. He’s glad she’s invited him back around, as for the past month she’s been telling him she needs to “learn to be independent” which made Todoroki feel a little like the parent but oh well, he understands where his mother is coming from.
“Hey! Todoroki!” Kamanari’s voice cuts through the peaceful afternoon air when he’s about halfway to the gate. He turns around to see Kamanari and Mina running towards him, looking rather excited.
They both stop just in front of him, both teens bouncing up and down giddily. The run seemingly had no effect on either of them.
“Hello,” he says, brushing a stray hair behind his ear.
“Are you free this weekend?!” Mina asks loudly, a big hopeful smile on her face.
“Which day?”
“Sunday afternoon.” Kamanari informs him, just as loud as Mina had been.
“I will be,” his mum is having dinner with his Aunt that night, so he had planned to go back to the dorms and study. Todoroki resists the smile that half forms on his face as remembers his mum’s exasperated but fond comments about her younger sister being too worried. Her facade could never fool him, he can see how much she likes being able to freely dine with her sister.
“Awesome!” Kamanari exclaims, bouncing more aggressively on the spot “come hang out with us then.” He states, and Mina nods along.
Todoroki is genuinely stunned by the request and stares at the two, confused why they’re even asking him. They both stop moving, and look sheepish.
“If you don’t want to, it's alright.” Mina says in an apologetic tone. Todoroki snaps out of his shock and shakes his head.
“No- no. I’ll come, where are we meeting?” He feels bad for making them worry. He likes both of them truly, but it’s an oddly timed request. Thankfully as soon as the words are out of his mouth Kamanari and Mina perk up again. Bouncing back instantly. It’s slightly off putting such quick shifts in their demenours.
“That’s great!” Mina tells him “we wanna know if you guys like, actually get along,” she blurts out and then looks slightly horrified by what she’s just said. Kamanari looks similarly surprised and mortified.
Todoroki too stares at her, though he’s more surprised than anything else. It’s…
His friends had echoed the same sentiment not even three days ago.
“Sorry.” She apologizes sheepishly. Todoroki shakes his head.
“It’s fine.” He reassures her. “I’ll- I’ll come. It’ll be fun, right?”
“Yeah of course!” Mina agrees, voice raised a little too loud in her attempt to reassert the previous excited tone she and Kamanari had instilled in the conversation. “We’ll see you then!”
Todoroki nods, and waves as he walks hastily to the train stop. Feeling oddly disheartened by Mina’s words.
----------
“Did you know your friends invited me to hang out with you guys tomorrow.” Todoroki slips into the conversation while they’re talking over the phone on saturday.
“Excuse me!” Bakugou yells out. Earning himself a concerned look from Kirishima who sits opposite him on the common room couches. “I cannot believe them! The fucking audacity of those god damned side characters!” Kirishima laughs. Knowing, after years of Bakugou’s shit, that this is his friendly way of saying “loveable dorks I’m friends with.”
“I said yes.” Todoroki’s voice is soft, unsure of how Bakugou will react.
That makes Bakugou think for a second.
"Why?" He barks out. His boyfriend is silent for a few seconds, clearly considering what he’s about to say.
"You're sort of friends with all of my friends, and I wanna be friends with yours.”
Huh.
It's rare but Bakugou has encountered this particular brand of anxiety in his boyfriend before. This anxiety to be liked by the people he likes .
It's kinda cute actually.
Todoroki starts speaking again "I don't have to-"
"Nah. come.” Bakugou dismisses, “y’know where we’re meeting tomorrow?”
“Yes, Mina texted me.”
“See you then.”
----------
The next morning arrives too soon in Bakugou’s opinion. It’s not like he’s dreading seeing his boyfriend, or that he’s dreading hanging out with his friends either. It’s the combination of the two that has Bakugou anxiously over-brushing his teeth in the way the dentist said will fuck them up if he keeps it up.
Because, look, ok, his friends, assholes, but they’re well meaning assholes, which is the worst kind. Trust Bakugou. Everyone in Bakugou’s life is an asshole, except for Todoroki, who’s actually pretty great. Who listens to him, and let’s Bakugou do stupid shit like brush his hair without a single question.
Ugh, look at him. He’s becoming a freaking romantic.
They meet up with Todoroki at the train station and Bakugou can’t help but admire the way he’s skillfully pulled his hair back into a neat braid. Bangs partially obscuring his vision. For a guy who’s already half blind, Todoroki should really put some more consideration into the length of his bangs. Even if the way he has to brush his hair out of his eyes occasionally is adorable.
Anyway that is besides the freaking point.
The point is, as soon as they meet up with his so called friends, they’re nagging Todoroki with a million stupid questions, because they want to get along with someone Bakugou has deemed good enough to date .
“So what’s dating Blasty like?” Kirishima tends to be the ring-leader for some reason, so, of course, he goes first.
“Is he as big a grump with you as he is with us?!” Mina shouts
Todoroki, for his part, laughs while Bakugou scowls at his group of friends.
“I don’t want you harassing my boyfriend!” He yells at them.
“Boyfriend!” All of the asses he drags around and calls ‘friends’ are greatly amused, and Bakugou finds the full twenty minutes worth of shouting it takes for them to calm down slightly grating. Todoroki seems a little confused and gives his partner a questioning look. When they all stop their yelling, they look at Todoroki expectantly.
“No comment.” he says with no hesitation. Bakugou laughs at that which causes Todoroki to smile “Where are we going anyway?”
“We’re going shopping for some reason.” Bakugou bemoans.
"It's fun Bakugou come on!" Sero comments, starting to walk, and quickly inspiring the rest of the group to run after him, as to not be left behind.
Bakugou finds himself still standing there with his boyfriend for a second. Their eyes meet and he can see how unsure Todoroki suddenly is. He scowls to mask the soft smile that is about to slip onto his face, and takes the other teens hand.
“Come on, otherwise they’re gonna get lost, and we’ll never find those idiots again.” Todoroki’s relaxed smile is all the confirmation Bakugou needs before he’s dragging the other teen with him to catch up with the group.
----------
They thankfully don’t have a bad time.
Sure, Bakugou is annoyed that Todoroki had been initially invited without his permission, but god does he look happy, elated even, to be here with people who obviously like him, and his boyfriend, in a public shopping centre trying on a polo shirt that looks as though a unicorn threw up on it, a mix of ridiculous bright yellows, purples, reds, blues and greens alongside a weird felt rose stuck to the back of the shirt.
It’s a weird, but good day overall.
So it’s fine, mostly, because his friends seem to be able to avoid asking any insensitive questions that might cause Todoroki to get embarrassed because he hasn’t had the chance to do something they had all done (like laundry, something they’d accidentally made fun of him over almost three years ago, and he knew his boyfriend still thought about. Todoroki learned how to do it. That’s what matters) or say something stupid that was untrue, and made Shouto doubt himself.
He says mostly, of course, because obviously it's Mina, Sero and Kaminari, who are all hungry drama queens ready for their next scoop of gossip, and the most recent point of discussion is Tokoyami and Tsuyu’s supposed love affair. Bakugou had been gently steering the conversation away from that topic all day because he knew that while Tsuyu was dating someone, she was definitely not Tokoyami.
The initial question itself is fairly simple, and comes when they are sitting down at a cafe outside of the shopping centre they went to. Kamanari is the one to ask “Ok, so, I have to know. What are your thoughts on the Tsuyu-Tokoyami relationship?”
Bakugou freezes up a little, and Todoroki looks confused by the question.
“My thoughts…?”
“About them dating! Or whatever thing they’ve got going on!” Kirishima explains
“They’re dating?” Todoroki’s look is hilarious. A mixture of shock and amusement at a statement so far from the truth, it steers into fiction. Everyone stares at him.
Bakugou sighs internally. Sensing the energy in the air, things are about to go to shit
“They’ve been together for like six months now, right?” Kamanari asks.
“um,” Todoroki says, unsure of how to answer. He begins to blush when he notices that everyone is staring at him. “They’re- they aren’t.”
Todoroki looks around and then looks to Bakugou, worried. Bakugou himself is about to snap at his friends for being such dicks to his boyfriend, when Todoroki rushes out “I need to go to the bathroom.” and then runs off to the back of the cafe to find it. As soon as Todoroki is out of ear shot, Bakugou is getting the tonne of shit from them he was anticipating.
“Todoroki Shouto! Bakugou! Why him?” Mina bemoans, and he huffs. They can all see his agitation at the question. “He doesn’t know any of the drama!” Mina emphasises.
“Yeah, he’s like best friends with Tsuyu! And he doesn’t know her and Tokoyami are into each other!” Kirishima complains, flapping his hands around like an idiot to emphasise his point.
He starts to snap at them all “Maybe because there isn’t anything there-”
“Bakugou.” Sero interrupts “are you serious?” And Bakugou cannot believe this. Todoroki and Tsuyu are best friends. Like all of the healthy relationships in Todoroki’s life, it doesn’t make any sense at first, but Tsuyu and Todoroki have this strong, silent rapport, and an implicit understanding of one another. It’s the same with their relationship really. His boyfriend was so bemusing and frustrating at the same time. It was adorable.
Ugh. He was so stupidly whipped for him.
“He’s so different from you, how did you guys even get together!” Mina asks
“I’m more and more surprised that you two are together really,” Kamanari adds, sighing pointedly.
Bakugou could actually blast him to shreds.
“You extras are just freaking him out!” Bakugou yells, drawing the eyes of other patrons in the cafe. Fuck, Bakugo really doesn’t want to be here. It's just then he sees Todoroki exiting the bathroom, looking perplexed by Bakugou’s outburst. He scowls at his boyfriend and goes stomping over to where he stands at the back of the cafe. Deciding he’s done with his friends questioning his relationship.
“Come on, let's ditch them!” He announces loudly, so that they can hear him. Throwing his arm around the taller boy’s shoulders. Somehow, despite the height difference, it isn’t uncomfortable, especially after Todoroki, seemingly subconsciously, leans down slightly to accommodate him. The sweet smile that follows, so filled with joy, would be worth any discomfort anyway.
Bakugou can hear his friends delight at the small display of affection between the two.
Ugh. They question his relationship one minute, they fawn over it the next.
“You alright?” Todoroki asks once they’re out of the cafe, beginning to far away from where the others are still sitting. Bakugou shakes his head.
“They’re all stupid fucking idiot extras.” He sneers. His boyfriend rolls his eyes “they kept asking why we were even together.”
Todoroki sighs “My friends keep asking that as well.” he admits, tone a bit softer than normal.
“Ignore them.” Bakugou grunts out roughly.
----------
Training can be a real bitch a lot of the time.
They get kicked and beaten and bruised. Worse, it’s by and in front of their classmates and friends. As much a group bonding experience as an exercise in humiliation.
Fighting your boyfriend can also be a bit troublesome. They’ve always fought with everything they had. Even when nothing was at stake, like today during their training. Bakugou likes being able to have one person he doesn’t have to hold anything back with, and he knows Shouto feels the same.
Normally people don’t care about this. They’re the only ones who get hurt, and it’s entertaining at the very least. Now that everyone knows they’re dating though, people are looking at Todoroki like some poor victim as they head back to the lockers, and holding their breaths to see what will come of it. Bakugou just ignores them, peeling out of his hero costume as his boyfriend does the same.
They’re both scathed. They’ve had lots of fights like this before. They’re both good. Great even, and when they collide it’s hard to block every attack of fire, ice or explosives that might come their way. It’s fun, a real test of endurance.
Todoroki of course got some of the worst of it, he may be able to control fire, but Bakugou’s explosions spray out with a wide radius. It’s impossible to attack and defend himself from every one of Bakugou’s attacks completely.
Shouto just needs to get better at blocking as well. He’s all offense nowadays, he can still make those towering pillars of ice, and cold shields that are thicker than most buildings, but his body just isn’t built for that, especially not his left side, which tends to end up with mild frostbite if Todoroki gets distracted.
Frostbite that Todoroki will then refuse to get looked at by the nurse.
He really needs to take care of himself better.
This train of thought gets interrupted just when Bakugou is shrugging on his blazer and wondering when Aizawa will get back from checking on Shoji. His eyes land on his boyfriend who is chatting with Midoriya, already ready for their next class. His long hair flops into his face, and Bakugou sighs. He’s… Stunning.
Todoroki doesn’t look at him though doesn’t notice that Bakugou is practically staring at him, instead rifling through his bag. Midoriya however does notice the stare. He gets a weird look on his face, and then he turns and says something to Todoroki.
“What?” Bakugou can see Todoroki’s confusion at whatever Midoriya has just said. Midoriya speaks again, slightly louder, and this time he can hear what the shorter teen says.
“I can't believe you're actually dating him is all.” it’s derogatory even in rushed out in Midoriya's high pitched voice.
“Why? I like him.” He hears Todoroki justify, cool and calm, confused by his friend's words.
Midoriya pauses for a moment, and it feels like the chatter in the room dies just before he speaks up again “I mean, with his attitude I just..” he trails off
“Just what?” Todoroki looks more concerned now. Bakugou thinks he knows where this conversation might be headed.
“I thought you'd pick someone who would be better for you.” Midoriya says, clear, and no room for mistaking his words, Bakugou is about to snap at the other for being so rude to his partner when Todoroki, in a voice tinged with shock, speaks up.
“Better for me?”
Midoriya, in a move Bakugou will think about for many years to come, spectacularly puts his foot in his mouth and says “Yeah he’s, yknow, kinda like your dad.” Bakugou takes a sharp breath in, and stands up a little straighter. He can see Iida and Ochako cringing where they stand next to their two friends. Kirishima who is beside Bakugou himself tenses, prepared to stop his best friend from doing anything stupid. Most importantly, he can see Shouto’s anger.
It’s rare, he’s seen his boyfriend angry maybe four times in total the whole time he’s known him, but in this moment, standing in the locker room of their highschool, Todoroki Shouto looks furious.
“Bakugou isn't anything like my father!” Shouto’s voice is a little too loud, even as he attempts to restrain himself.
Midoriya looks away for a second and Todoroki continues “I thought you two had moved past your childhoods.” which yeah they had, Bakugou is just as clueless of where this is coming from as Todoroki is.
“Yes! We have, but you’re just- you dont see your dad anymore, which is great! But I just think it’s not good to be dating someone so similar.” Bakugou really wishes that Midoriya’s words didn’t hit him as much as they did.
“Excuse me!” Todoroki barks out, appalled by the insinuation. Even those who were pretending not to see or hear the drama before them have to look. Appalled by the insinuation “my father is-“ He has to clench his fists in anger. Bakugou can tell Shouto is about five seconds away from screaming at Midoriya in front of all their friends and classmates
Bakugou moves across the room, abandoning his back to step between the two, placing his hand on Todoroki’s shoulder. He sees Iida also grab Midoriya.
Todoroki looks at Bakugou, and he can now see that the furious facade simply masks the tears threatening to spill. None of them move or speak.
Aizawa picks that moment to walk in. “What's going on in there?” he asks tiredly. “All fou-” Todoroki is out the door of the locker room before Aizawa can finish the sentence.
Bakugou doesn’t listen when Aizawa tries to stop him from following seconds later.
----------
He follows Todoroki all the way back to their dorms. Though after he’s sure of where his boyfriend is headed he slows down, out of breath. He speeds walks the rest of the way there, and when he finally gets to the building, Bakugou can tell Todoroki is ready to collapse from exertion. Standing outside, dry heaving.
His boyfriend doesn’t turn around as he approaches and instead snaps out “Why’d you fucking follow me?” Todoroki’s words would make anyone else flinch, but Bakugou can tell the words aren’t spoken out of anger but a mix of genuine confusion, residual hurt and slight relief. The slip of the swear betrays how deeply this must have affected him.
Bakugou just sighs and comes closer to his wheezing boyfriend.
“Come on, let’s find someone to fucking sit.” He places his hand on Todoroki's back and looks around. No one is around, unsurprisingly, it’s the middle of the day, so they should be safe just sitting besides the building.
It doesn’t take long before they sit down in grass beside the 3-A dorm rooms, yet it’s enough time for Todoroki to catch his breath. His face is red and blotchy. Bakugou wonders if he should go and get him some water, but he doesn’t want to leave him by himself, even for that minute.
“Sorry I can’t believe he’d say that!” Todoroki huffs, voice leveling out to it’s usual level slowly “you’re nothing like that!” His voice wobbles at the end of that sentence. Bakugou can tell his partner is so close to breaking down into tears again.
They stay there in silence, and then Bakugou slides his hand into his boyfriends where it lays beside him in the grass. Todoroki looks to the side and laughs, a wet, slightly gurgled sound. “I should not be crying.”
“That’s bullshit.” Bakugou in turn scoffs, Todoroki looks at him. “Seriously if Kirishima said shit like that to me I’d cry.”
It’s Todoroki’s turn to scoff, the blatant lie distracting him from his own situation “No you wouldn’t.” he chuckles a little after he speaks.
There’s a smidge of actual happiness instead of sadness and hurt. Bakugou rolls his eyes, despite his relief. Todoroki wipes his eyes a little, and they continue to hold hands as they slouch against the concrete skirting of their dorm building. Time continues it’s passage, and yet it feels as though this moment is timeless.
Eventually even the small sniffles are long gone, “Come on.” Bakugou gently encourages his boyfriend, standing up himself and then yanking Todoroki’s hand until he stands. “Let’s get something to eat. You're probably crashing.” his boyfriend nods, and it’s about then that Bakugou wonders home much shit they’re gonna get for ditching class so brazenly.
----------
Aizawa is surprisingly lenient. They don’t go back until just before lunch is over, and when they find their teacher again, he just sighs. Long and exhausted, before he nods tiredly at them and invites them into the teachers lounge so Bakugou can bite out a quick, fiery explanation to his teacher.
When Bakugou is done, Aizawa turns to Todoroki, ignoring his whole explanation “I don’t know why Midoriya said that, but you two should talk.” It’s super bland advice, but he’s not wrong. Todoroki hums in agreement.
“He doesn’t know when to keep his fucking mouth shut!” Bakugou snaps. Aizawa again doesn’t acknowledge him or the outburst.
“When did you two start dating anyway?” Aizawa instead asks. There’s nothing behind the question, no subtle insinuation that they shouldn’t be together. No judging remark.
“Six months ago.” they answer in unison. Their teacher nods.
“Well congratulations, I was worried you too were never going to get there.” Aizawa replies tiredly.
“What?!” Bakugou shouts. Todoroki’s eyes widened in surprise.
Aizawa laughs, a smirk forming as he turns back to his work. “I’ll write you both a note. But you need to get back to class.” and they drop the subject
----------
Immediately after that day, the relationship between Todoroki and Midoriya becomes extremely awkward. Subsequently, Todoroki starts to sit with Bakugou and his friends at lunch. A decision that gets Bakugou several annoying looks from his friends.
Kirishima, not surprisingly, is the one who finally talks to Bakugou about it and doesn’t just look at him. They're hanging out in his dorm room on a friday, Todoroki went over to his mums for the weekend. Probably for the best as the older women always seemed capable of screwing Todoroki’s head back on. “Man look, I like him and all, but I think he needs to sort this stuff out with Midoriya.”
Bakugou doesn’t say anything for a moment. “It’s all Deku’s fucking fault anyway, comparing me to that fucking rat bastard.” he snarls.
“Yeah but Midoirya’s still his friend dude, and I know that he has a habit of saying the absolute worst things with the absolute best intention man!” He’s right. But Bakugou knows it’s too soon. Todoroki is still processing how he feels. Though Midoriya likely feels terrible about what he said, Todoroki just needs time, Bakugou’s sure of it. He’ll open up soon enough.
Soon enough turns out to be in the dining hall of the school that following Monday, when it’s just them because Jirou’s sitting with her girlfriend and the rest of them are... doing something, he’s not sure where they’ve gone. He’s got a suspicion it was to let Bakugou and Todoroki have this moment together.
“I’m overreacting” Todoroki states. Cold, emotionless. Avoiding eye contact. No context either, but Bakugou knows what he’s referring to instantly. He gives the other an annoyed look.
“Don’t be stupid. That was a shitty thing to say to you.”
“He meant well.” Todoroki justifies, frowning.
“Doesn’t matter, you got fucking hurt because of him.” the frown doesn’t leave his partners face. Bakugou looks down at where Todoroki’s hand sits, considers it briefly and then takes his boyfriends hand in his own. That gets Todoroki to look back to him and meet his eyes.
“I didn’t want this to ruin our relationship.'' Todoroki admits “But I feel like everyone thinks we’re terrible for each other.” Bakugou squeezes his partners hand. “I didn't want this to ruin my friendships.”
That had been a fear, their respective friend groups and their reactions. Why they kept it a secret for so long. Bakugou knew that at least one of Todoroki’s friends would take issue with their relationship. He didn’t think it would be quite this explosive.
“We can always break up.” Bakugou chokes out, and as much as it pains him to admit, it might be easier. There are plenty of other people for Todoroki. He’s practically a model, and while he’s a bit cold, Todoroki’s true warmth was easy to detect if you looked for long enough.
“I don’t want to break up with you.” Todoroki rushes out, eyes wide, a look of hurt written on his face. That quick response gets Bakugou to look up
“Then we won't.” Bakugou nods, feeling relived. Todoroki nods, and squeezes his hand.
It feels like a commitment.
----------
Bakugou almost completely forgot about the party he was invited to. It’s tetsutetsu’s birthday, he thinks. He just knows everyone in the third year is invited, and usually that means Kiri or Tetsu.
It’s probably the first party they are going to as a couple, which makes Bakugou nervous. Not that he thinks about it until he’s actually at that party, drink in hand, Todoroki at his side, as they idly chat, observing the others in the crowd of people. One of his hands resting on his boyfriends hip casually.
They got together at a party like this.
Months ago now, it had been at Kirishima's house back then as well, since his parents were away often and he seemed to be friends with everyone he possibly could have, parties just tended to be there.
Back then Bakugou was so overwhelmed by Todoroki’s mere existence at points. Between their own private training sessions, infrequent study sessions, and just generally talking more, Bakugou had started to notice Todoroki in a decidedly less than platonic way.
He’d noticed Todoroki looking back as well. With his piercing eyes, and slight smile. During training sessions they’d somehow end up on top of one another, breath intermingling. During study sessions they’d end up closer than necessary, and in class they’d always pick one another as partners if they could.
They’d have gotten there at some point, but somehow outside, in the cold air, while Todoroki waited for his sister to come and get him to take him home, while Bakugou had…
Well admittedly, he’d followed Todoroki simply because he’d wanted to be alone with him.
But now Bakugou doesn’t need some fucking excuse for why he and Todoroki are hanging out, and he definitely doesn’t need to follow him out into the night, because they’re dating now.
Thankfully everyone is leaving them alone, and Bakugou can people watch with his boyfriend, sneaking looks at his face with the tiniest of smiles when Bakugou makes a joke about someone, or rolling his eyes when he complains.
Todoroki is on the lookout for Iida and Midoriya where they stand against the wall, because despite their recent dispute, Todoroki is still deeply rooting for those two brain dead idiots to get together.
“They like one another, they’re both simply worried.” Todorooki had complained frequently. Still complains frequently, even if he and Midoriya aren’t really talking.
“Hey guys!” Kirishima’s loud voice comes over the crowd, as he pushes through smiling brightly. TetsuTetsu is smiling his signature grin, following his friend like a puppy. Adoration in his eyes.
God are he and Todoroki the only functioning gays?
“I’m surprised youre here.”
“Why? we got invited?” Todoroki states, but the way he grips Bakugou’s arm a little tighter tells him that Todoroki is slightly anxious that maybe they weren't, maybe he’s simply wrong.
“Yeah but like, as a couple, I though you were like super private?” TetsuTetsu says
“Hey! Why the fuck wouldn’t i show off my boyfriend!” Bakugou barks, earning a lax grip from said boyfriend, and a charming smile that he just can’t get enough of.
“Dude i don’t think i’ve ever seen you smile like that!” Kirishima chuckles, and Bakugou scowls to hide the blush.
“Y’know I was wondering when you guys would resolve whatever you had going!” Tetsu says, earning a surprised look from the other three
“Really?” Kirishima asks
“Yeah, dude have you ever seen them fight together?! The chemistry’s unreal!”
Todoroki preens at that. Happy, thrilled even. Bakugou also can’t help be pleased that someone for once, foresaw them getting together, instead of criticising their relationship.
“Yeah well, someone’s gotta protect this guy.” Bakugou huffs, pulling Todoroki against his and Todoroki in turn slides his arm around his boyfriend.
Kirishima and TetsuTetsu share this private look, and chuckle. “We’ll see you around then.”
They say goodbye to the two and watch them walk off to greet other people in the crowd. After a second Todoroki turns to him “When did they get together?” voice bit hushed incase other’s overhear
Bakugou laughs. “They haven’t. They’re just y’know, less obvious than your friends. Most of the time.”
“Everyone is less obvious than Iida and Midoriya.” Todoroki tells him, with a fond sigh.
----------
They actually have a good time.
It’s just him and Todoroki for most of the night, hanging out, laughing with one another, and trying to figure out the thoughts of other people in the room. Todoroki is more insightful as he's had more practice over the years.
“Iida is about to complain to Ochako about Midoriya.” Todoroki’s voice is a little lighter and breathier than normal. They’re both a little drunk at this point. At the end of the night, people have either gone home or are sleeping at the house. They’re some of the last few left. About to go, but his boyfriend needed to make one last check on his friends.
Iida, as predicted, slams his head into his hands, and turns to Ochako. They both hear him say “how can he be so cute!”
Ochako glances over at Bakugou and Todoroki, and they both smile at her. Amused by the scene. She shakes her head and consoles her friend.
They end up outside sitting down outside the house. Just sitting there in silence. The cold air on their skin is a refreshing sensation after being inside a stuffy, warm room most of the night.
Todoroki’s phone buzzing within his pocket interrupts the silence, and he tiredly takes it out.
“How will we get home?” he mumbles to himself. Confusion written on his face
“What?” Bakugou asks
“My sister can’t pick us up.” shit.
“My parents won’t.” Bakugou huffs, because if they found out he was drunk his mum would either laugh her ass off and then tell him to just sleep at Kirishima’s place or get irrationally angry with him for undergae drinking. Really depended on her mood.
“I don't want my dad to.” Todoroki adds
They both sit there, and then his boyfriend sits up. An idea coming to him.
“My mum has a car now.” and without much preamble, Todoroki gets up, and then, in a display worthy of the academy awards, falls over onto the concrete in front of him face first, almost instantly.
Bakugou stands himself and laughs. Leaning down to grab his boyfriend and hurl him up.
They lean half against each other half against the concrete wall as Todoroki calls his mum, slowly melting into the arms of his slightly more sober boyfriend.
“Maybe I should call your mum.” Bakugou says, looking at the others state.
“No, No, No.” Todoroki says as the phone rings “hi mum!” he greets overly cheerily.
Bakugou wraps an arm around his boyfriends waist, and pulls him a little closer. “Would you pick and Katsuki up?” Todoroki speaks, that sounds nice, his name on Todoroki’s lips. “Just me and him.” Todoroki tells his mum. “We-” he stops and his mother must say a joke or something because he then laughs. High. Giddy. Happy.
He’s so beautiful, standing out here in the moonlight in Bakugou’s arms …
Wow.
Ok.
He’s kind of in love with Todoroki.
Seven months in, and yeah, he’s definitely there.
Watching Todoroki laugh on the phone to his mum, slightly tipsy, he looks good, and Bakugou feels good being here with him. Spending his time with him.
“I know. I know.” he responds to something, likely her admonishing him. “Me and Bakugou will keep it PG.” Bakugou blushes at the implication of that “I love you too mum.” he farewells, before he hangs up and turns to his boyfriend, pulling him into his arms.
Bakugou doesn't hesitate to wrap his own around Todoroki, and pull him in tightly.
Yeah, he’s a man in love.
----------
When Rei pulls up to pick them up she’s dressed in what looks like sleep wear, some loose sweatpants and a t-shirt. Her smile is warm, and Bakugou is suddenly reminded this is the first time he’s going to be meeting her.
Ever.
Todoroki gets up, and Bakugou helps him stay steady this time, and they get into the small grey car clumsily. Maybe he’s a little more drunk then he thought.
“Sorry we’re both a mess.” Bakugou apologizes, hyper aware of her gaze where it settles on the both of them in the back seat. Rei laughs, tired. She pulls away, and replies “Oh, I’m no better, got straight out of bed to drive here.”
“Oh.”
“Don’t worry about it.” she reassures him “it’s very freeing to be able to go out at night, even if it’s to pick up my drunk son and his boyfriend.”
He flushes, nervous, his parents would murder him if they found out he had been drinking. Rei must see his face in the rear view window because she laughs again “I won’t tell anyone.” she promises
“Thanks.”
“I’ve heard alot of good things about you Bakugou.” Rei says, and you can practically hear the smile “You’ve made Shouto very happy.”
“Oh.” Bakugou blushes brightly at that, and it stays there the rest of the ride to Rei’s apartment.
----------
Ok, they’re having a second hang out with Bakugou’s friends. Things will be better this time, smoother hopefully.
No outing so they don't have to have any awkward conversations in public leaving him and Todoroki to have to find their own way home. It’s just hanging out at the dorms on Sunday afternoon, watching movies. They can always fuck off and do their own thing if they want.
Shouto has to come back from his mother’s house so he hasn’t been there during the day. He’ll get there on time, the guy’s always fucking early, the perfectionist. It’s sweet, makes him reliable.
His friends have all kicked their beanbags and blankets into Bakugou room, to which he grumbles, but he would have chosen his room anyway. Todoroki is a little weird about people coming into his own room, and everyone else will end up in his room no matter where they start. It’s a comfortable middle ground.
Bakugou gets distracted while helping Kamanari bring their drinks and food up from the main kitchen. It's 6:05 when he picks up his phone again and Todoroki isn’t there. He’s five minutes late.
“Bakugou catch!” Sero chucks him a controller, and he’s so fucking lucky Bakugou has good reflexes or he’d have been blasted into next week for smacking him with the chuck of plastic.
“What’s wrong man?” Kirishima asks, setting up the video game console.
Todoroki isn’t here yet.
Bakugou tries to rack his brain for why his partner could possibly be late… train delay? No he’d have called, or at least texted, apologising for a trouble that wasn’t remotely his fault. Something happened with his mum? No again, Todoroki would have sent something short that would’ve left him worrying all afternoon, but he’d known what was going on. So then what…
“I’ll be back!” Bakugou barks out before leaving his friends in his dorm room. He can hear Mina call out for him, but he just keeps walking. He goes to the back of the building, to have some privacy, before he presses call on Todoroki's number.
It rings, once, twice. Then it disconnects. Todoroki hung up on him. He gives it a minute, grinds his teeth unconsciously.
He calls again. It rings, and then Todoroki picks up this time.
“Hi, I’m- I’m going to be late, because- fuck, can-” His boyfriend’s voice is slightly higher in pitch than usual as he speaks. There’s a brief pause and then when he asks “Can you call me back?” his voice wobbles.
“What’s wrong Shouto?” Bakugou feels a little bad for calling him by his first name. It always makes his boyfriend weak in the knees to be called by his first name, and he knows Todoroki will stay on the line if he calls him by it.
“Sorry. Dad’s being a dick, and I’m overre-”
“No.” He's tired of Todoroki blaming himself for the actions of shitty people around him, first Midoriya, and now his father. Todoroki usually has an easy time identifying when he’s being crappy. “What did he say?” Bakugou asks.
Todoroki sighs “He was just upset at me because I chose to come to the dorms to hang out with you and your friends instead of sit at the family dinners he’s hosting.” he explains “which-” he can hear his boyfriends frustration as he stops talking, can imagine the scrunch of his eye brows.
“Isn’t a big deal?” Bakugou finishes the sentence, hearing Todoroki hum in the affirmitive he continues “oh fuck him, you guys have a family dinner every night of the week.”
“It’s sunday.” which of course is the one day Endeavour tries to get his three remaining kids to come home and eat together.
“Is Fuyumi going to be there?”
Todoroki scoffs “Fuyumi and her husband always come” he confirms
“And Natsuo?”
“Uh, yes tonight he will be.”
“So why do you need to be when he’s already got company?”
“I don’t know,” he admits quietly.
“Good, so you don't need to be.” Bakugou states, matter of fact.
“He wants me to be.” Todoroki says, voice filled with conflicting desires.
“Why? You didn’t fucking go last weekend, weren’t you hanging out with your mum?”
“Yeah.” Todoroki agrees.
“It’s a little different, but your dad can deal.” That draws a laugh from his boyfriend. Bakugou can sense that Todoroki has more fully calmed down. Then his boyfriend takes a deep breath “people saw me in public crying.” he sounds slightly embarrassed.
True “You the quietest crier i've ever met. Nobody would’ve noticed.” Over the line his boyfriend hums in agreement. Reassured. “you almost here?” Bakugou redirects the subject from Todoroki’s dad.
“Yes, I’ll be another ten mintues,” he says and then there’s a pause as Todoroki seems to get some courage to say something. “Thank you.” His voice is so grateful and light. Bakugou’s heart rate skyrockets at that.
“Yeah, whatever.” he dismisses feeling his face grow hot “want to uh- stay on the phone, I’m gonna go back into the dorm.” Bakugou’s glad his voice stays steady.
“You’re not in your room?” Todoroki asks curiously.
“Can you hear those fucking extras screaming their brains out?”
“No.” Todoroki says, voice light and happy. “I’ll text you when I'm at school, you can go back to your friends.”
“See you then.”
----------
Bakugou can see Todoroki walking up the path to the 3-A dorm room from his third story window. He’d like to remind his jackass friends that he did not rush down to greet his boyfriend. He strolls.
Casually. Leisurely.
Bakugou only sprints once the door behind him shuts, and they can’t see.
He gets down just as Todoroki opens the door and for a second they simply look at each other.
Todoroki’s face is red, and a bit blotchy, obviously he’s been crying, but his slightly tired smile, and warm eyes make Bakugou’s heart warm, and he finds himself hugging Todoroki before the door even closes. Bakugou nuzzles into his neck, enjoying the warmth. The touch. Todoroki pulls him tighter. Bakugou feels strangely relieved that his boyfriend is here and safe.
“You alright?” Bakugou asks. He feels Todoroki’s breath on his neck, soft light, sending gentle tingles up Bakugou’s spine.
Todoroki doesn’t answer. Just burying his face is Bakugou’s neck and that’s good enough for him.
“You two are so cute.” Bakugou hears Jirou pipe up from behind him. When he moves his head enough to be able to see her, she’s smiling.
“Go away.” Bakugou barks, and he feels more than he hears the muffled laughter of his boyfriend. Jirou smirks once more and turns and leaves. He and Todoroki stay like that in one another's arms. Eventually (reluctantly) they both pull back.
“Let’s go upstairs, come on.” Bakugou laments and he drags his boyfriend up to his dorm.
----------
By the time they settle down on Bakugou’s bed everyone is deeply engrossed in mario kart. The two slip in silently. Kirishima, Sero, Mina and Kamanari, already wrapped in a game, don't even notice either of the intruders.
When Banana cup is done (with Mina winning, simply by slamming into her fellow players in her enthusiasm while playing) they’re trying to sort out who’s next. Todoroki and he finally get acknowledged when Sero turns around.
“You guys are cuddling!” he shouts excitedly. The other three look and coo over them, Bakugou rolls his eyes at his friends.
“We are fucking not.” he grumbles. They are. He’s not gonna give those idiots an inch because they’ll never stop running. Todoroki nuzzles closer to his neck and Bakugou smiles. Of course that starts the cooing, and a controller chucked his way
“Hey!” Bakugou barks out while Kirishima laughs
“If you’re not cuddling you have to lose at mario kart.” Bakugou cannot help but take the bait and sits up, dislodging Todoroki from his chest, causing his boyfriend to let out an indignant little noise that is just adorable. Bakugou looks at him, an apology on his lips before a controller is also thrown at Todoroki.
“You too.” Mina tells Todoroki who picks up the controller tentatively.
“Ok.'' Todoroki agrees sitting on the edge of the bed, Bakugou following him as the others set up and argue who else is going to play. They settle on Kirishima and Kamanari so they can recover from their horrendous losses in the last match.
“Are you gonna let your boyfriend win?” Mina teases.
Bakugou laughs and shakes his head with a smirk “I never let him win.”
“No, he doesn't.” Todoroki agrees “I’m simply better than him.” he continues smoothly.
“Oi!” Bakugou replies “Half the time you’re the one lying on the floor begging for mercy when we fight!”
“Kinky!” Sero calls out, his boyfriend blushes redder than his hair and they start the game. Kirishima picks Bell cup just to annoy Bakugou because he knows Bakugou hates Super bell Subway and it gives other players a slight leg up.
Todoroki blasts his way through Koopa city of course, he, like Bakugou, excels at mario kart. Rainbow road is a bit of a disaster, it’s always that map for Todoroki. Each and everyone of them seem to totally confuse and annoy his boyfriend. They make it through and Todoroki wins super bell subway, much to Bakugou’s frustration and then they’re onto the last course.
Bakugou is on his last lap, getting to the finish line, when he hears Todoroki’s saccharine voice speak up.
“Hey.” Those heterochromatic eyes are on him and they pull bakugou away from the screen. His boyfriend is looking at him with this forlorn, love struck expression reaches in to kiss him sharply. Bakugou melts into the kiss, surprised and uncaring of the game in that moment. With the warm lips of his boyfriends pressed against his own at the slightly awkward angle, it’s perfect.
Then Todoroki pulls away from him and laughs, turning back to the game.
“You lose.” Todoroki states. Bakugou grabs for where his controller should be in his lap only to find it isn’t there.
“Hey where’d you put the damn thing.” Todoroki just smiles, and continues to press forward in the game. Bakugou stands up and looks around aggressively but it’s too late, Todoroki crosses the finish line. In first place. Todoroki’s wide, happy smile is incredibly charming enough to wash away Bakugou’s annoyance.
“I win.” His boyfriend finishes putting his controller down besides him.
Kirishima and Kamanari get over the finish line and it’s only then Jirou pulls the controller out from behind her bean bag and chucks it toward Bakugou so that he can finish the race as the rest of them laugh.
He still comes second but that’s besides the point.
Everyone sorts themselves out for the next game where they play special cup. Bakugou takes over for Todoroki on rainbow road because he rocks at it, and when the others call him a cheater, Bakugou sends off a few blasts to quiet them, while Todoroki snuggles close to him.
Todoroki spends the night in his room as do the rest of them sleeping in his bed with him, warm and soft.
It all went very well in the end.
----------
Bakugou has never been one of those people you’d take home to your parents. He’s loud, aggressive, often mean spirited, both accidentally and purposefully. He’s aware of when he falls short in the personality department, there’s no point in lying about it.
Of course, that was never of any concern. Bakugou never thought he’d be with anyone, not until he was an esteemed hero anyway, and then people would be able to point to his heroic deeds and brush past his issues. Not until he and Todoroki started to train together, and then started to get along when they weren’t forced to, and then started talking, and then talking some more and then dating .
Now it is concerning.
Especially because it’s the Todoroki family, who’s dad is pretty well known for torturing one of his sons to the point he became a mass murderer and routinely abusing the youngest. And while the media has somehow forgiven Endeavour for his actions, there is still an anxiety that surrounds their family. Enji Todoroki is still an incredibly flawed man who has somehow continued to hurt his son by being incredibly judgemental of his sexuality. While Todoroki has claimed his father is not outright homophobic, and is more “worried about the continuation of their family legacy” Bakugou would rather call a spade a spade.
Bakugou is also very aware that people often see him as an endeavour type figure. With his fiery temper and desire to be the number one hero no matter what. He knows that Fuyumi, Natsuo and Todoroki’s mother are also aware of this. Hell, they probably believe that Bakugou is exactly like that bastard.
So the idea of meeting all of them at once is anxiety inducing.
He is seriously reconsidering even coming to meet his boyfriend's family in honesty. It’s been exhausting having people constantly questioning why they’re even together since they came out, and while it’s slowed down a little, Bakugou still sometimes gets comments about it, and questing gazes.
He knows it gets to Todoroki more than it does to him, so he’d offered to have them arrive separately so Todoroki could have the chance to ease their minds and opinions on Bakugou (read: try and convince his father that having a boyfriend wasn’t the worst thing in the world.)
Todoroki however had denied this claiming they needed to be a “unified front” and the stupid proud expression on his face was so goofy and charming he’d had to kiss it right off. Which had led them here to a coffee shop near Fuyumi’s apartment where they’d be having dinner, on a rather anxious date.
Bakugou can see his boyfriend is a little run down by everything. School wise and socially, his fight with Midoriya still a constant ache, even more so now that he’s back hanging out with his normal friend group. But Bakugou knows he still feels isolated from his best friend.
Todoroki’s third or fourth tea sits in front of him while Bakugou’s first coffee sits next to it, undrunk. He’d thought his boyfriend wouldn’t have time to get through a whole teapot before they had to leave but maybe he shouldn’t have underestimated his boyfriend's worry.
However they do need to get moving if they want to get there in time.
Todoroki looks up at him clearly thinking the same thing.
“It’ll be ok.” Bakugou finds himself instantly reassuring. He has always been a good liar and he hopes he’s convincing enough for his boyfriend. Todoroki nods, unconvinced, but not wanting to say that. “We should probably get going though.”
As they’re paying Bakugou slips an arm around his partner's lower back. Todoroki leans into him smiling softly. It feels like this meeting will be ok in this brief moment.
The woman who served them smiles sweetly when she sees this and says.
“Might I just say you two are adorable together.” Bakugou raises an eyebrow
“Really?” Todoroki asks. “Not a lot of people say that about us.”
The server, undeterred, shakes her head. “I can't imagine why anyone would say that. You two seem lovely together!”
That thankfully raises Todoroki’s spirits and they begin the journey to Fuyumi’s home for dinner.
The Todoroki family house has always been a source of interest for Bakugou. It's big and lavish, it sticks out for its ancient architecture among a suburb of ultra modern homes. It was always nice, very Todoroki, special. Different but not bad.
Beautiful.
God Todoroki is so, so beautiful-
Back to the point, Fuyumi’s house does not contain any of her childhood homes extravagance and ancient style. Especially considering her apartment is in a regular apartment block, totally mundane. It’s comforting, relaxes Bakugou being in a familiar environment rather than the lavish, yet foreign palace the Todoroki’s grew up in.
Fuyumi greets them at the door, stomach slightly swollen from her growing baby, face carrying a bright smile. “Hey good to see you two! Natsuo is here already.”
“And our father?” Bakugou hears his boyfriend ask a twinge with slight hesitation and anxiety. Fuyumi pauses and looks at her brother with a confused look.
“He‘s not coming.” Fuyumi says
“Our father isn’t coming?” Todoroki asks, voice clearly loud enough for his older brother, as Natsuo yells out “Thank God!” Natsuo yells out from the living room. Todoroki smiles this cute smile that suits him so perfectly.
“Nobody told me he wasn’t coming.” The genuine relief is evident to both Bakugou and Fuyumi yet neither comment, instead Fuyumi answers the unspoken question.
“I trusted Natsuo to tell you but that was a clear mistake.” Todoroki nods
“I’m surprised you trusted Natsuo to even get here by himself.” he says solemnly early an offended shout from Natsuo.
Fuyumi laughs “you guys can sit down with him, dinner won’t be ready for another twenty mintues.”
“I thought you said seven?” Todoroki asks, surprised
Fuyumi’s face falls a little, and she purses her lips. “I uh…”
“You thought I’d be late.”
“No I just thought it would-“ she searches for the right word “take you a while to get here.” Todoroki just sighs and accepts her words. Even Bakugou can tell they’re from a place of knowing her younger brother.
When she’s in the kitchen out of earshot, helping her husband make dinner, he turns to Bakugo’s “Natsuo is always at least ten minutes later than me.” He complains. Bakugou laughs.
Natsuo is spread out on one of Fuyumi’s small couches, watching TV.
“Ahh so this is the boyf.” Natsuo comments, not looking at either of them as they enter.
“Boyf?” Bakugou raises an eyebrow at the off term, Todoroki seems just as confused.
“Natsuo is just annoying.” Todoroki tells his partner as they sit down.
“Hey!”
The conversation stalls there, and Bakugou feels the silence weigh heavily on the atmosphere of the living room. Only then after several minutes does Natsuo look at the two of them and speaks.
“Kick up your feet don’t look so tense.” Bakugou frowns as he sees Natsuo’s eyes slim a little when they land on Bakugou himself. “You two make quite a couple.”
“Because we are.” Bakugou states.
“How long have you two been together?” Natsuo questions, he sits up a little, posture still relaxed but Bakugou knows from intern work and training to become a pro hero when people are fully alert.
“Seven months?” Bakugou tells him
“And you’re bringing him home now.” Natsuos voice has a hidden venom to it and Bakugou can’t help but feel it’s a jab to both him and Todoroki.
“Bakugou is not a bad person.” Todoroki states carefully, staring at his brother. Clearly used to his brother's form of interrogation.
“I’m not saying he is.” Natsuo says “I’ve just seen what sort of personality he has.” another jab. Bakugou feels his mouth go dry. Just what he didn’t want. The endeavour comparisons.
“Oi!” A loud booming voice snaps at Natsuo from the doorway behind him, and Bakugou turns around to see a rather tall man with light brown hair with flecks of leaves embedded and growing out of his skull. Todoroki rolls his eyes a little, and smiles. Comfortable with the owner of the loud voice.
“Hello Minoru.” Todoroki greets
“Are you hounding Shouto’s boyfriend?” Natsuo rolls his eyes. “Ignore him.” Minoru tells Bakugou, “he’s just jealous he’s now officially the only Todoroki without a partner.”
“Mum isn’t dating anyone.” Todoroki speaks up.
“Yeah she is.” Minoru states. That earns him a puzzled look from Natsuo and Todoroki
“She is, is she?” Natsuo asks, and Minoru, realising his mistake, turns and promptly leaves, slamming the door behind him in his haste.
“Hey come back!” Natsuo yells out, getting up and chasing the man who must be Fuyumi’s husband.
“Sorry about them. Natsuo can’t help himself.” His boyfriend apologises “he interrogated Midoriya back when I brought him around in first year actually.”
“No surprise there.” Bakugou huffs.
“But he thought we were dating.”
Bakugou gives his boyfriend a look
“It wasn’t that obvious.” Todoroki flushes, sitting upright. Bakugou laughs and slips an arm behind his boyfriend, feeling more relaxed now it’s simply the two of them.
“Yea, yeah tell yourself whatever you need to.” He smirks and Todoroki’s face gets a little redder.
“They’ll warm up to you though.” His boyfriend says after a moment “I promise. Even Natsuo.”
----------
Dinner is served a little under twenty minutes later and by that time Natsuo has gotten all the info about their mother’s dating life he could, that being none, and slumped back on the couch. Clearly contemplating something while Bakugou and Todoroki sit and chat idly about school and the like.
His boyfriend is more relaxed now that he knows his dad definitely isn’t coming. Now that some time has passed and there has been no unexpected now or ringing of the doorbell. No last minute phone calls or texts saying he’s on his way.
Once dinner was served, and there was a casual conversation going on between Natsuo, Fuyumi and Minoru this relaxation furthered.
“I wish mum could be here tonight.” Fuyumi says wistfully, Todoroki nods
“I am glad she is taking the initiative to make new friends.” Rei, Bakugo knew, was in fact out with her own sister at a birthday party or something of the like. “Though I am surprised our father has not shown.”
Natsuo and Fuyumi nod. But neither say anything. Their younger brother suddenly looks sceptical, though Bakugo is unsure why.
“He is on patrol apparently.” Fuyumi hesitantly says “He picked up a shift.” Todoroki scoffs
“It’s his agency.”
“I know.” Fuyumi states
“Come on man you’ve heard his fucking speech.” Natsuo says, voice for the first time that night a little lighter, sympathetic towards his youngest sibling.
“Of course.” Todoroki states, and goes back to focusing on eating, and Bakugou does the same. Intent on ignoring both Endeavours actions and opinions.
Minoru pipes up after a minute about something banal and off topic, and conversation gets started again. The comfortable atmosphere returns.
When Bakugou starts to chip in with his two sense about whatever they're discussing, Fuyumi laughs and smiles conspiratorially at her husband.
“You and Shouto have such similar tastes Natsuo.” Fuyumi tells the table
“What?!” Bakugou and Natsuo bark out. Natsuo, clearly embarrassed by his sister's words, blushes heavily.
“Oh nothing, just, that’s exactly what Natsuo’s girlfriend, Kei would say.” Fuyumi’s tone is teasing and Todoroki smiles next to Bakugou chiming in.
“When will we meet her, Natsuo? You seemed upset that I took my time introducing my boyfriend.” Todoorki implores, putting on fake puppy dog eyes and aiming them at his brother.
“She‘s not my girlfriend yet!”
“Yet!” The other Todoroki sing out in unison is glee, and they start hounding natsuo on this girl he apparently attends university with.
Dinner is great after that. Surprisingly Fuyumi likes him a lot and Minoru is nice. Natsuo is still a bit cold, but he warms up as the conversation flows and Bakugou begins to engage more. Then after they’ve all eaten he, like a love struck idiot who wants to make a good impression, offers to help clean up, which Fuyumi readily accepts.
“Minoru never lets me do anything. He worries far too much.” Fuyumi fake whispers, loud enough for Minoru to hear and her husband looks at her, exaggerated hurt in his eyes, an almost cartoonish pout on his face.
“Fuyumi~” Bakugou can’t help but laugh, hearing Fuyumi do so as she walks into the kitchen holding the dirty dishes. He follows her after a moment and finds himself in a small cozy kitchen. It has all the necessities but nothing more. Fairly mundane like the rest of the apartment.
Fuyumi sets him up unloading and loading the dishwasher while she puts away the leftover food. He keeps looking back at the pregnant woman, looking out for any sudden upturns of her nose. He doesn’t know her well, but he knows Natsuo better from Todoroki’s ramblings about his moody older brother. That his true feelings are best laid out on their faces when they believe no one is looking, and any words should be taken with a grain of salt.
“So, you and Shouto have been together an awfully long time without telling anyone.” She says, not looking at Bakugou as she does so. He freezes. Unsure of what to make of her tone.
“Uh- yeah- we uh-“ he shouldn’t be tongue tied. It isn't like him, but he desperately wants to make Fuyumi like him. It’s an urge he doesn’t often have. He settles on “We were just worried.”
“About?” Fuyumi seems genuinely curious, with no hint of suspicion or malice in her voice
And just like that she rips open the floodgates on his inner filter. She’s the one he’s been most desperate to impress. Natsuo’s, as previously established, a dick, and Bakugou doesn’t know Minoru that well. Rei already likes him, and Endeavour is a dick and Bakugou doesn’t care for him, so Fuyumi is the only person within his mind that needs to like him, which makes her easy to be fearful of.
“What everyone would say.” He starts “everyone already fucking comparing me to that abusive bastard you guys got stuck with as your father, and I know that if this was short lived we didn’t want to have to explain this to people. Todoroki is such a dumb idiot sometimes, but he’s such a smart idiot, and I like him, but people think this is just gonna go do-”
Fuyumi laughs suddenly. Sharp and surprised, Bakugou can’t bare to look at her, “You’re so different from my dad.” She tells him, full of earnestness and truth.
He does look at her then. Relief flooding him.
“I mean, sure you're angry, but you're not cold, you're very emotive, and I think-“ Fuyumi has this knowing smile on her face “you make him very happy. I knew something was going on simply because he smiled so much more, which is something our father was never capable of.” There’s a sad, wistful smile on her face, and Bakugou feels both enamoured by the words, and extremely embarrassed that someone is capable of saying such nice things about him.
The rest of the night goes well after that talk. Bakugou feels more at ease, relaxed now that Fuyumi has given him the sisterly seal of approval, and Natsuo proves that he isn’t going to outright hate Bakugou after further discussion of his not-girlfriend Kei reveals her to be awfully similar to Bakugou himself.
Todoroki can obviously feel the slight shift, and in turn he also relaxes. By the time the two of them are leaving, Bakugou feels sad to say goodbye to everyone and pleased he’s managed to make a good first impression when he was sweating over this day for the past two weeks. He’s also glad that the main cause for Todoroki’s own anxiety wasn’t here as the man was the sole cause of the hesitation.
The walk to the train station starts out quiet as they make their way through the snow until Todoroki finally bursts out, voice quietly excited “I’m really glad it went well!”
Bakugou huffs. “I-“ Todoroki begins to continue and then he stops in his tracks, swallowing hard before looking away.
“What?” Bakugou asks, stops himself barking out or yelling.
Todoroki mumbles it out and Bakugou stares incredulously at his partner. Silently asking him to repeat himself.
“I love you.” Todoroki says a little louder this time. Bakugou takes a good look at his boyfriend, feeling slightly surprised but happy by the news. He looks at the person before him, dressed in his warm deep blue winter coat, and that stupid scarf Bakugou bought as a joke months ago that bright pink, his hair dusted in soft snow-
Bakugou kisses him before he can think any harder. Hoping Todoroki gets the message clear and loud. Hopes he hears what Bakugou can’t say out loud.
The delighted, muffled laugh from his boyfriend as they kiss says it all.
----------
Things get better.
A Lot better, because Bakugou finds himself not dealing with half as many insensitive idiots questioning their relationship and making Todoroki (and him let's be honest) self conscious.
There’s also a noticeable shift in their group one day one day, when Bakugou ends up talking with Todoroki too long and his friends, like the socialites they are, come over and simply sit with them. Todoroki’s friends who were already there accepted them without thought. That’ll likely be how they sit at lunch for the rest of the year since no one has made any move to sit anywhere else since then. It’s sweet that their friend groups get along so well. Not that anyone but his boyfriend knows Bakugou thinks that.
It’s nice to have consistency within his last few months at school, this group of people he talks with that not only get along with him but his boyfriend.
The only issue is well…
Midoriya and Todoroki still haven’t fucking talked
Which, Seriously?
It’s been two months. Those two need to sort out their shit already.
Everyone agrees. Bakugou has been told by Kirishima, and Kamanari and Mina and even Ochako for some reason that those two need to have a chat. Like he doesn’t know that.
They will sort it out. Slowly they’ve been moving towards having normal conversations that aren’t filled with intense awkward silence. They just need to set the record straight about that fight. That Midoriya is sorry and he knows what he said about Bakugou isn’t true. That Todoroki feels bad he overreacted and hasn’t acknowledged the rift between them for so long.
Bakugou just wants Todoroki to not have this lingering over him. Bakugou keeps thinking about it, and considering it and wondering if he should just lock them in a room until the topic comes up.
He can’t bring himself to do that to Todoroki though, so Bakugou resolves that he will start a conversation between them himself if neither of them are willing to. It’ll just be a nudge in the right direction, nothing more.
However, because Bakugou’s life needs to get back at him for having a cute boyfriend who loves him, that conversation comes when he has said boyfriend passed out on his chest one friday afternoon.
They’d decided to watch TV together once everyone evacuated the dorm to go home for the weekends and the few that didn’t would likely be in their rooms. They had piled onto the couch and relaxed together, Todoroki sprawled out on his chest, neither making a move to turn on the TV. Todoroki had passed out pretty soon after that, evidently exhausted.
Bakugou too had tried to get some sleep, it was a slightly awkward way to do so, cramped on the tiny couch of their dorms, with Todoroki’s heavy mass weighing on him, but it was nice in a way.
His peace and quiet however was interrupted by someone stomping down the stairs, totally unaware of the sleeping Todoroki and half asleep Bakugou sprawled out in the communal area. It’s Midoriya, who looks surprised that anyone was here at all.
He hesitates, taking in the sight of the two of them in the living room without saying a word.
Midoriya is clearly going somewhere, not to his mums though, because he lacks any bags or anything, but he’s dressed better than usual, fresh jeans and a shirt instead of the typical hoodie and old jeans.
“What is it?” Bakugou barks out, annoyed by his staring and a little embarrassed to be seen in such a vulnerable position. Midoriya looks away.
“You really care about him.” he states out of the blue and Bakugou knows where this statement is coming from. Guilt.
“Obviously,” Bakugou says, keeping the annoyance at the obviousness of the words from his voice “We’re dating.” He glances down to his boyfriends before back up to Midoriya where he sees a conflicted expression on his face as Midoriya looks at Todoroki.
“Yeah I guess.” he sounds a little embarrassed by his own words. Midoriya shuffles his feet a bit and looks at Todoroki with apologetic eyes.
Yeah ok, Bakugou needs to say something about this.
“He’s forgiven you by the way.” Bakugou states right as Midoriya is about to move away. “I'm serious.” He implores to the shorter man when a skeptical expression appears on the others face.
“Um.” Midoriya freezes upon Bakugou bringing up the topic and he can’t help but roll his eyes.
“I’m not an idiot and after your lot I’m probably the one who knows him the best.” Bakugou states “And I know you two just need to fucking talk.”
“I-” Midoirya stops and shuffles his feet, obviously uncomfortable with Bakugou’s stare. “I don’t know how.”
Bakugou huffs “Just say you’re sorry dumbass and go from there, you’ll start babbling because you’re anxious and then he’ll tell you he forgives you.”
“Do you really think it'll be that simple?” Midoriya asks quietly
“Yes.” Bakugou doesn’t hesitate in his response. “Now leave or get food or whatever you’re doing so I can sleep.” he closes his eyes, relaxing back into the sofa. When he doesn’t hear Midoriya move he opens his eyes again in annoyance.
“What?”
Midoriya laughs quietly “I’m just remembering what you guys were like in first year.” ugh, yeah, Bakugou was a massive cock back in first year, angry and aggressive and unwilling to let people in. Todoroki, too, was emotionally distant, withdrawn, too caught up in hating his father and his power to concentrate on his severely lacking social skills.
“You’ve both changed a lot.” Midoriya says “You guys balance one another out now, it kind of reminds me of your parents.” Bakugou groans
“Don’t compare me to them, asshole!” Midoriya laughs again.
Todoroki moves on his chest slightly and Baugou freezes, conscious of not waking the other, Midoriya too holds his laughter when he sees this slight movement. Todoroki settles down after a moment and the threat of him awakening is gone.
“I’ve got to get going, I'm meeting up with Iida.” Midoriya says, finally moving from the spot he’s been glued to since they started speaking and making his way towards the entryway
“By yourself?” Bakugou asks
“Yeah I-” Midoriya looks bashful and smiles shyly “I’ve got something I need to tell him.”
Then Midoriya’s gone, leaving Bakugou with the implication of that sentence.
Finally , is all he can think.
----------
Next Sunday finds most of class 3-A sitting down in the common room for a movie night, the mood light and everyone talking and chattering while Mina and Kamanari try to set it up.
“Oi! move.” Bakugou tells Iida where he sits on the couch. “I can’t sit with my boyfriend if yours is taking up half the seat.” Midoriya blushes at the word boyfriend and Bakugou rolls his eyes.
“Bakugou!” Iida complains, “We are allowed to sit here!” but Midoriya is already moving for Todoroki to sit down.
Bakugou smirks at the other falling onto the couch and slipping an arm easily around Todoroki’s shoulders, sticking his tongue out at the taller teen. Iida huffs while Midoriya and Todoroki share a look. It feels good to have the two back on the same page after so long. It’s good to have his boyfriend at peace again.
Midoriya had thankfully taken his advice and just fucking talked with Todoroki, so those two were no longer anxiously wading around one another helplessly. The atmosphere at lunch had, surprisingly, been even better than it usually was, now that Midoriya and Todoroki didn't hurt it with their awkwardness.
Everyone else is sorting themselves out on the couches around them, excluding Kirishima and Tetsutetsu who are screwing around and flirting in the kitchen. Mina and Kamanri seem to be failing to set up the movie and Sero is trying to assist them with little success. Midoriya and Iida get caught up in talking with some kids from 3-B and he can see everyone else generally settling in. No one batting an eye at him and Todoroki. It’s close to their nine month anniversary, they have to worry about exams soon, and graduating.
It’s so different from when they initially came out as a couple. People aren’t confused why they’re dating, they're just another couple. It’s calming and comforting to Bakugou.
Todoroki rests his head on Bakugou’s shoulder, and Bakugou looks at him. His boyfriends bicoloured hair falling over Bakugou’s shoulder.
“Hey.” Todorki says quietly. Voice light and happy, clearly feeling the same way Bakugou is feeling “I’m really happy.” he admits. Bakugou smiles, and, because nobody else is looking and nobody else cares, he pulls his boyfriend in for a kiss.
