Meaningful Gazes

Summary:

Secretly dating your auror partner was, in a word, difficult.

And Harry could admit that Draco was definitely more adept at keeping it a secret than he was.

Like right now, for instance, Draco looked like he was really paying attention to what Robards was saying at the departmental meeting about whoever the dark wizard of the month was. Draco was even taking notes. He looked very focused.

Harry wasn't paying a lick of attention to the presentation at hand because he was too busy staring at Draco. Admiring the long curve of his neck, and the one little mole in particular that Harry loved to kiss. He was too busy tracing the strong line of his jaw with his gaze, remembering the feeling of his 5 o'clock stubble under his mouth when he'd kissed him against the door last night before they'd tumbled inside.

"Potter," Robards snapped and Harry dragged his gaze away from Draco to look at Robards.

"Sir?"

He glared at Harry, "Are you listening to a word I'm saying?"

"Yes, sir," he affirmed, "Dark wizard, armed, very dangerous, use extreme caution, etcetera."

Draco kicked him in the shin under the table.

Work Text:

Draco kicked him in the shin under the table and Harry tried not to wince, "He's kidding, sir. We know that Miller isn't just your run of the mill dark wizard, the potions smuggling ring is highly specialized and extremely dangerous."

"Good," Robards replied, seemingly mollified. "I wanted to assign the two of you to the case to start with."

There was a collective groan around the room (as there always was when the two of them were chosen for high profile cases) but Draco ignored them, "thank you, sir," he said as he took the file. "We won't let you down."

"See that you don't," he replied, giving Harry one of his sternest looks. "Dismissed."

Harry kept himself from rolling his eyes, but only just, as everyone stood. He followed Draco back to their office, staring at Draco's arse in his tight fitting trousers.

Draco turned and gave him a pointed look and Harry rolled his eyes but sidled up next to him, shoving his hands in his pockets to stop himself from grabbing the other man's hand.

They headed into their office and Harry closed the door, watching as Draco went over to the board in their room and started pinning things up. "He's dangerous, that's for sure," Draco said, adjusting the magical map that they had hanging to the appropriate parameters. "It's interesting how far apart the warehouses are, don't you think?" he added, "and that they have nothing in common."

"Mmm," Harry hummed, "Can I see the case notes from the muggle police?"

"He didn't say anything about case notes from muggle police," Draco said, frowning at Harry.

He quirked a sardonic grin at Draco, "No he didn't, did he?"

Draco scowled as he dug through the file and pulled out the paper clipped file from the muggle police. "How did you know they were there?"

He shrugged, "Intuition."

"Seriously," Draco said. "How?"

He nodded to the map, "those warehouses?" he asked, "They're all right on the border between the muggle and wizarding world. I bet they're for both, and I bet that the muggle front is how they're all connected" he said with a shrug, "Wizarding potions getting mixed in one too many times with muggle products, it sent the cops sniffing around, and then it came to us." He skimmed the notes, "I mean sure, Miller is vaguely dangerous but it would have taken us ages to figure out what he was running on our own."

Draco was silent, so Harry glanced up from the notes to see him staring at him.

"What?" he asked, tilting his head at Draco, "Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Just trying to decide how I want you later tonight," he said with a sweet little smile.

Harry grinned back, "Lucky me."

"I love when you do that."

He licked his bottom lip, "Do what?"

Draco waved a hand at him, "Show how clever you actually are."

"Yes, well," Harry said, looking back down at the notes again, "You're always clever, so I've got to at least keep up appearances."

"Except you don't keep up appearances," Draco argued.

He raised an eyebrow at him, "Is this really the conversation you want to be having right now?" he asked. "When there is a murderer on the loose?"

"Yes," he said, hands on his hips. "Because you are always playing the fool. Always spouting off about my brilliance, my cunning; pretending that you don't listen in meetings, pretending that you aren't seeing the same patterns that I am. You're good at this job and it's annoying that you pretend you aren't."

Harry ducked his head, hiding the smile, "That's a very fine compliment you've just paid me."

"Harry, so help me Morgana, I will hex you into next week," he growled. "Tell me why."

"Because you are brilliant," he said, "you are clever and cunning, and handsome to boot," he added with a cheeky grin.

"So?"

"So," he said, rolling his eyes, "I want people to notice. I could actually do nothing in our cases and people would still believe that I've done something miraculous. But even when I tell people how outstanding you are they don't fully believe me." He shrugged, rubbing the back of his neck, "I might as well use my privilege for something good."

Draco was silent for a long moment, looking at Harry like he was seeing something he barely recognized. Then without warning, he took three, long, purposeful strides across their office and kissed him, right there at work when anyone could wander in, and Harry was flying.

It was over too fast, but the imprint of Draco's lips on his remained and Harry brought his fingers to his lips, tracing the tingling outline of where Draco's had been moments before.

"You," Draco said, "Are absolutely ridiculous."

Harry couldn't help but grin at him.

"And I adore you," he added.

His grin widened further and it took everything in him not to simply pull Draco back into his arms and kiss him until they couldn't think of anything else. "The feeling is very much mutual," he said, affection blooming bright and full in his chest.

They just stared at each other for a long moment, looks full of emotions that hadn't been voiced quite yet, but that was okay. Harry wasn't in a hurry.

Eventually Draco snapped them back into the moment. "Right," he said. "Let's catch these criminals so that I can take you home and ravish you."

Harry laughed, delighted by Draco's teasing adoration at work, "I'd like nothing better."

Maybe he wasn't the only one who was bad at keeping their secret relationship a secret while they were at work.
