The Mortal Boy

Summary:

A small mortal boy finds 3 gods playin uno, and the story starts.

Work Text:

At first, there was Life and Death. Two sisters, two opposites. They loved each other, but quickly became bored, there was only so much beings could do in an empty place. So, they created. Life created stars and planets, relishing in the created. Death destroyed planets and blew up stars, balancing their new baby, the universe.

Once again, they became bored. They had fun, but it wasn’t enough. Life went to a planet, which Death had called Earth, and she created once again. She made plants, animals, and insects. She had fun, creating these things, these creatures. Death came by a bit later, creating a cycle to stabilize the planet. The creatures evolved, becoming smarter, more conscious.

Soon, they realized that they could not handle all these creatures at once, so they created something different, something more like them. They named these creatures Gods, all of them having similar abilities to Life and Death, but not as powerful. The first was Angel of Death, he would help Death harvest the dead souls of the new humans. Then they made more, each coming from humans that represented their domain.

Gods became friends, created attachments with one another. The most known was SBI, the god of madness, god of war, and Angel of Death. They were and are an unstoppable trio, causing terror throughout the world.

One day, Life and Death then retreated to the shadows, to their duties, and the Gods ruled over Earth and its many creatures.

They first met Tommy when he was young, maybe 5 or 6. Wilbur, Tubbo, and Ranboo were at an old temple that they use as a hangout place. It was enchanted so that only they could go there, and that people in need could go for a safe haven. They were messing around, playing UNO, when a high pitched squeak took their attention.

The door was slightly open, revealing a small kid. He had gold fluffy hair, with small animal ears and a fluffy tail. He was wearing a white T-Shirt with red sleeves and blue shorts, his kneecaps bruised with a small band-aid on them. He looked over towards where the Gods were, and his eyes widened.

“Woah.” The boy says, awe-struck. He walked in, revealing a worn stuffed cow in his right hand. He walks forward, eyes locked on Ranboo. The Gods looked at each other, confused. No one should be able to see them unless they allow them, let alone a small human child.

The boy stopped right in front of Ranboo, red and green eyes locked onto blue ones.

“Can I have the rings on your horns?” The boy asked innocently. They stared at each other, and after a small moment, Ranboo took one ring off his horn and gave it to the young boy. He squealed in happiness, sitting down and inspecting it like it was treasure. Ranboo looked up at Tubbo and Wilbur.

“He’s too adorable, I couldn’t say no.” He blurted out, eyes wide. Wilbur and Tubbo burst out laughing, making the young boy jump in surprise. The boy looked at the laughing figures and immediately got angry.

“Are you laughing at me? I’m a big man, I’ll take you both down, easily!” He said, getting up and staring straight into Tubbo’s eyes. He stopped laughing, smiling wide at the small boy.

“Don’t worry, I’m laughing at Ranboo, bossman! He’s kinda funny, you know.” Tubbo said, leaning down. The boy laughed, looking at Ranboo.

“That’s a funny name!” He yelled out, looking back at Tubbo. “What’s your name?”

“My name is Tubbo Underscore! You can call me Tubbo, though. This guy right here is Wilbur.” He pointed over to Wilbur, and he gave him a big smile.

“Hi there!” Wilbur put his hand out, “What’s your name, big man?”

“I’m Tommy Innit! Biggest man ever!” He shook Wilbur’s hand rapidly, another thing he shouldn’t have been able to do.

“Well, Tommy Innit, Biggest Man, what are you doing all the way out here?”

Tommy pulled back his hand, holding the stuffed cow with both of his hands. “Ma’am said that I had to leave ‘cause I’m annoying, so I went to the park! Then there was this weird guy with a mask and so I left the park and went to the forest and then I found this place and saw you!”

Tubbo and Ranboo looked at each other in concern. Human mothers were supposed to be very protective of their kids, barely letting them out of their sight, so why would a mom send away her kid?

“Well then, do you want to stay the night with us? We can play games!” Wilbur said, his demeanor unwavering and happy. Tommy lit up at the idea.

“Yeah yeah! I wanna play! What should we play!” He yelled out, stars in his eyes.

“I don't know about you, bossman,” Tubbo started, creating small green toy soldiers, “But I have a pretty powerful army.”

Tommy gasped, looking at the toy soldiers. “My army is bigger! And stronger! I could beat your army with one of my men!” He declared, sitting down and grabbing the soldiers.

Tommy and Tubbo fought it out, with Wilbur on Tommy’s side and Ranboo on Tubbo’s. They played for about an hour, but soon, Tommy started getting tired.

“Hey Tommy, wanna sleep?” Wilbur asked, looking down at the boy in his lap.

“No! I’m awake and I have so much energy!” He yelled out, yawning right after.

“It’s okay big man! We can play again later!” Tubbo said, convincing Tommy.

“Okay! But you have to pinky promise!” Tommy remarked, putting his hand out and lifting his pinky. Tubbo interlocked his pinky, shaking it like a handshake.

“I pinky promise!”

Five minutes later, Tommy was far into dreamland, drooling on Wilbur’s shirt.

“You think he’s okay at home? I mean, isn’t a human mother supposed to protect her child, not send him away because she’s annoyed?” Tubbo asked, going over to sit next to Wilbur.

“I don’t know, maybe it’s a one off occurrence? His mom could be under stress?” Ranboo suggested, moreso hoping that they’re thinking wrong.

“Yeah, I hope so.”

The three Gods started visiting the temple a bit more, trying to see the mortal boy again. After a year, they had to catch up on missing duties, leaving the temple empty most days. Phil and Technoblade heard about the boy from Wilbur, who’d rant about what happened. They became interested with the mortal, no one should be able to see Gods, but the boy did, and he could interact with them.

Phil had been talking with Technoblade while on the battlefield, complaining about the humans, when he heard a prayer. It was from a small voice, but it was louder than every other prayer he’d heard.

He looked up at Techno, “I think there’s a kid praying to me, I’m gonna check it out really quickly.”

Techno nodded, and looked back at the battlefield. Phil took off, focusing on the prayer. Soon enough, he arrived at the old temple. Going inside, he spotted the little boy, curled up in a ball, muttering his prayer. The boy’s facing him, eyes closed and looking at the floor. He stops his muttering, looking up. His eyes widened, looking straight at Phil.

“Who the fuck are you?” The boy yelled out, scrambling up. Phil stopped, shocked.

“You can see me?” Phil asked, stepping forward. The boy flinches back in response.

“Of course I can see you, I’m not fucking blind!” He yelled.

“Well, um,” Phil started, unsure of what to say, “You prayed to me? What was that about?”

The boy visibly tensed, curling his fists. He muttered something that Phil couldn’t quite catch.

“What’d you say mate? Didn’t hear ya.”

“I said that I prayed to not die.” The boy yelled out, looking down angrily.

“Why?”

“Well, they say that London’s getting bombed, and my mum’s not letting me leave with the other children.”

Phil looked at the boy, frowning. “Why not?”

“She says that I’m not worth it.” He whispered, looking down.

Phil stood there, heavy-hearted, he’d never heard a kid say something like that, and it broke his heart.

“Kid-” Phil stopped as a hand touched his shoulder. He looked back, Technoblade stood there, an impassive exterior.

“You have to come back, Phil.” He said, leaving as quick as he came. Phil looked at the boy.

“I’m sorry, duty calls.” About to go, he decided to do something. Quickly, he created a charm. It was a small crow. “Here, if you need something, hold this and say my name.”

Cautiously, the boy stepped forward and took it. He muttered a thank you, and Phil left, hoping he did the right thing.

That was the last time any of the Gods saw Tommy. They kept going back, trying to find him, but it never happened. They wondered what happened to him, did he die during the war because of the bombings? Or did he grow up and forget about the temple? Slowly, they stopped talking about him, it went from conversations, to small passing talks, to no mentions of him at all.

It wasn’t until one particular day.

Tubbo, Ranboo, Wilbur, and Techno went to the old temple after many years. Techno had been dragged along and was more annoyed than nolgastic, unlike the others. When they arrived, it looked different. The vines that once strangled the pillars were gone, replaced by small lights that surrounded them. The whole building looked spotless, and every statue had small flowers in front of them. What surprised them the most, though, was a blonde, blue-eyed teenager staring at them. He’s wearing a white shirt with red sleeves and blue pants, along with a blue cardigan. On the cardigan, a small crow charm is pinned on it.

“It’s been a while, huh? Uh, what’cha guys doing here?”
