“No. No! Please do not drop that, that is a valuable golden vase set that has been with me for years!” Okoye scolded the mover who was carrying her boxes with little care. She went as far as to take the box from the mover. “Watch the door!” she said before sucking her teeth as she watched a pair of movers trying to go through the front door with her furniture. For some reason, Shuri had convinced her that she should use movers for her things instead of her doing the task by herself. But right now, she was considering just paying them for the time they haven’t used yet and just moving everything inside her home herself. She wore an all-black suit that fitted her form, her satin button down red color shirt going well with her golden ears cuffs and painted red lips. A few yards from her home was another house with a barn near it, with a large close-off gated area where horses were able to roam as they pleased. Another section was gated for cows and other barn animals. A man with sun-kissed skin with his hair tied in a loose bun, wearing a dark plaid shirt with jeans stalked out of the barn holding a bale of hay. His sleeves were rolled up to his elbow and he wore black gloves to protect his hands.
Almond-shaped chocolate eyes flickered to Okoye when he heard her loud voice seem to echo and saw her directing the movers. High cheeks defined his face along with his full lips. He was stunning in every way, even as a frown formed on his lips while he watched Okoye for a moment. Not too pleased by the fact the house that was close to him was now being occupied. The last conversation he had with his cousin he was assured that the property was going to be bought by him but Namor seemed outbidded.
“Oh, my Bast. No!” she groaned as she saw another trying to carry two boxes at a time inside. Some of the movers exchanged looks with one another but said nothing. Trying to be polite and follow her command and decided to place one of the boxes down carefully and presumed to take it inside the home. Unknowingly to Okoye, Shuri had tipped the movers handsomely, already having a hunch just how tedious the move was going to be for them and Okoye. Her head was pounding by the time the movers were finished and yet there was still so much to do. She even sent a voicemail to Shuri stating she didn’t need to pay the movers on her behalf but still thanked her. Although the movers were handling her items a little too roughly to her liking, they did place her couch in front of the fireplace as she requested. Her bedding items were stacked neatly in her room as well her kitchen items were stacked in their rightful place as well. As inviting as the couch looked at that moment, she moved to her kitchen first to pull out the dishes and pots she brought with her. Wanting to put those items away first before doing the same in her living room. Slowly but surely her new home was becoming more of a space she could relax in.
A pile of cardboard was made in the living room as she finally moved into her bedroom, she was glad she was able to get the spacious one-story home. Gray wooden flooring was placed throughout the house while some walls were either painted dark teal or gray. Something the previous owner left up, allowing the new owner to make the choice if they wanted to repaint the walls or not. She didn’t mind the color; it was certainly a drastic change from the deep reds and browns she once painted in her home with W’kabi. Nimble fingers slowed down just as she glanced around her bedroom, most of her clothing was put away and yet still she felt there was something missing. Her thoughts went to her ex-husband with a light frown while she fluttered her eyes closed. Willing herself to stop the tears that threaten to form. W’Kabi wanted to try again and work on the marriage, he begged her, and yet Okoye denied him. With a light sniff, she grabbed her stack of clothing and moved to stuff the clothing into the middle and top drawer. No matter how her heart ached to see the noble steed she had grown attached to as well. The white horse named M20, she knew W’Kabi was his rightful owner, and asking about the horse would just stir more unwanted conversation with her ex-husband. It was late afternoon by the time Okoye got her curtains up in her bedroom and living room along with starting dinner. Choosing white sheer curtains for some privacy in the living room and gray for her bedroom. She opened two of her windows in the kitchen to allow the cool breezes in. She had changed into a long strapless knit black dress, still wearing her golden jewelry and red lipstick. Much to Shuri’s dismay, she requested an older stove instead of a stainless flat top. She always preferred the old design of stoves to new ones, if Okoye could she would have wanted a stone stove overall. She made a mental thought to see if she could have one built outside but for now, the gas stove worked just fine for her. Spices and braised lamb filled the living room and even traveled outside some. She settled on making Pilau with braised lamb for her first night in her new place, smiling softly to herself while checking on the rice. Shuri had placed a housewarming gift with Okoye’s things, which she didn’t find until later on. A duo speaker set that allowed her to play her favorite music that Shuri had fixed for her. The soft melody of Love Nwantiti by CKay was playing.
Just as she reached to lower the heat on her rice, a soft rap on her front door was heard over the music. Glancing at the door, she moved her meat away from the heat before turning it off completely and doing the same to her rice. Just as another knock was heard on her front door. “Eh? Just a minute, please. I am coming. “She called back. Wiping her hands on a nearby kitchen cloth she made her way to her front door, opening the door she gave a curious look.
Attuma lowered his hand and his gaze overlooking Okoye, this was certainly different from what he saw earlier. He wasn’t ashamed to let his gaze wander some before he offered a polite smile. Flawless umber toned skin that looked soft to the touch, full pouty lips with lovely brown eyes that bore into him. Noticing just how much red was certainly her color at that moment. What agitation he had for his new neighbor was partially gone but replaced with mostly curiosity. To see such a beautiful woman, who had bought this countryside home near his, he wanted to know about her.
“Yes, Can I help you?” Okoye questioned with a light glare while she crossed her toned arms over her chest.
“My apologies for disturbing you but I wanted to inform you that one of my goats escaped. And before I began to wander in your backyard. I wanted to inform you,” he stated. Attuma’s voice was deep and yet calming. Okoye squinted her eyes searching his face to see if he was lying before nodding. She had to look up at him to meet his gaze, the other was taller than her as she was sure he would have to bend down to even get in her own doorway. He was still wearing his dark plaid button shirt, although there was a light sheen of sweat on his brow while his soiled gloves were tucked into his pocket. Attuma turned away to walk down the small set of stairs off her porch and around the back of her home. Even if the man was practically ogling her, she did feel he wasn’t lying to her. Okoye quickly grabbed a pair of sandals to wear only to follow Attuma outside.
“You do not have to follow me, this will be done quickly, and I will be on my way,” he said, not bothering to turn around to look at Okoye. Afraid if he did, he was sure something foolish would slip his lips.
She sucked her teeth in response, stretching her stride to catch up with him, “The sun is setting, and you are coming to my property asking about a stray animal. I will see fit that you will get your goat and then yes, I will let you be on your way.” She said bluntly.
“If you think I am sneaking about your land, I am not. Besides before you moved here, this was an area that she seemed to always stray to when getting out. “
“I didn’t say that, but I do not know you nor do I even know your name.” she shot back.
Which was true, at most she knew she had a neighbor but nothing more than that. “My name is Attuma and yours?” he questioned softly while glancing around.
“Okoye, “she stated.
“Well, Okoye it is nice to meet you then.” Attuma offered a light nod while saying her name slowly to himself as if trying to memorize it. A soft bleat was heard to the right of them, a small white and auburn baby goat wandering around looking to weed roots to eat. Attuma gestured for Okoye to stay still while he slowly approached the goat, “Chia, come here so we can go home” he said, kneeling some. A few soft bleats were Attuma’s only response though the goat moved toward him after a while. Once close enough he wrapped a strong arm around the small goat as he stood up. Offering a few scratches to the goat’s chin, “I apologize once again for disturbing you, Okoye.” He said looking at her while she nodded in return. “It is fine, good to see Chia is safe with you now.” She said quietly. Attuma notices her demeanor softens at the sight of the baby goat.
For some reason, Attuma hadn’t walked away from her but only turned slightly in the direction of his property. With a glance at his property, he looked back at Okoye who was already moving back to her home. Attuma watched her go, watching the silhouette of her swaying hips in that black dress.
His throat began to tighten as he willed himself to not call her, to stop her once again to see her face.
“Okoye. “ He said again to himself while petting the goat who seemed to lean into the light scratches to his head.
A beautiful name that matched a beautiful woman in his opinion.
Okoye had shut the door and locked the door behind her quietly before moving over to a window near her kitchen. She placed a hand over her heart in an attempt to steady her heart. Questioning herself just why she felt her stomach flutter when hearing her name come from his lips. Through the small window in the kitchen, she was able to overlook the grass plains and see Attuma’s house. There she saw the other locking up his barn, checking the gates as he walked to his home for the night. Even from that distance, she could have sworn he was looking her in her direction before he went inside. Her heart began to race once more while she moved to straighten out the curtains some.
Okoye sucked her teeth with the sudden realization that she had forgotten all about her food since meeting Attuma. Deciding to just make a small plate for her, she packed away the rest and placed it in the fridge to share with her new neighbor tomorrow.
Chapter 2
Summary:
“So have you met your neighbor yet?” Shuri questioned between mouthfuls of food, deciding to change the subject before either of their moods dampened.
“Mhm.” She nodded though Okoye seemingly straightens at the mention of Attuma, flashes of the other overlooking her while introducing himself came to mind right then.
“And?-” Shuri said while carefully sticking her fork into a piece of pineapple, glancing at her with a curious look.

“Sister! Open the door! I know you’re in there and I know you’re awake!” Shuri called out moving closely to the front window trying to look inside. Even shuffled to the second window to see if she saw Okoye. With a light tap on the window she tipped toed and spoke loudly, “I smell food! Let me in, please!” Shuri straightened hearing shuffling of locks and the front opening some. She gave a small smile even if she was met with a light glare from Okoye. Shuri flashed an apologetic smile in return.
“You’re late.”
“Mm yes by at least five minutes and it is good to see you too. I would have been here earlier too. But Ayo and Aneka spent the last hour or so picking out a gift for you. And somehow I got dragged into it with those two. Not to mention I’ve been on the phone with someone named Namora who was speaking on the behalf of a man named Namor. He was saying that whatever you paid for the house he would double it and buy back the property from you.” Shuri explained with a light sigh, she gave a small thank you once Okoye opened the door wider for her to come inside.
“I am not interested in reselling this house.” Okoye bluntly stated while she watched Shuri place her bag on the couch before plopping down beside it. Reaching into her bag to pull out the small red gift box that had a card with it. Shuri wore ripped jeans that fitted her slim waist but were baggy on the leg. Fashioned with white sneakers, her dark purple fitted top matched her tracksuit jacket. Her tight curls that had grown out were now neatly twisted into locs that went past her shoulders. The tip of her locs curled as a few curly strands were stretched down her shoulders as well. Complimenting the mixture of locs, if she remembered correctly they were called Goddess locs, a style that Okoye only assumed Shuri had gotten while visiting Nakia. The style suited her well.
“I figured. I’ve told him that twice but I am going to guess that this property must be of some kind high value to him. Because not only did he call me he did send me an email in regards to the matter. Persistent. ” Shuri did a light shrug of her shoulders. “He may come to bother you soon so just want to warn you about that. Rather it is by phone calls or letters” Shuri glanced at Okoye who had moved back to the stove in the kitchen. “My answer will be the same, rather he tries to call me or even tries to step foot on my property. “ Okoye called back to her. Shuri smiled at her once more, her sister still had that typical curt expression but she did notice her voice had softened some. A drastic difference since meeting with her in her old home she shared with W’Kabi. It took time to encourage Okoye, to insist that moving away was better for her. She knew how much her old home meant to her but also how much it pained her to be surrounded by such memories.
Instead of always dressing in formal suits it was nice to see Okoye in a more comfortable state. The brown halter top fitted Okoye complimented her skin tone perfectly, with fitted pants in the same color. Her golden waist beads revealed in this attire, hugged her waist but didn’t dig into her skin. Emerald plates were neatly placed on the table, covered in various fruits for them to pick and eat. Two cups of orange juice along with water and coffee were also placed out on the table. Shuri’s stomach growled faintly as she rose to her feet, moving about the living room to look at the décor closely. She wasn’t about to whine about food when Okoye had a point about her being late so for now she ignored her hunger pains. She smiled softly to herself looking over the various childhood photos that were carefully displayed on the chestnut table. Her gaze stopped on one particular while she reached for the black framed photo. In the photo was Shuri and T’challa smiling with Okoye squeezed into the frame with him. A faint smile graced Okoye’s lips in the photo while it was T’Challa who held and took it. She remembered this photo, it took some time for Shuri with the help of T’Challa to even convince Okoye to join them.
“You know, if you would like you can take it and make a copy of it.” Okoye offered to her softly glancing back at Shuri.
Shuri placed the photo down carefully before turning around to face Okoye who was now near the table placing the last two dishes down on the table. “I would-..like that very much.” she said quietly with an unreadable expression on her face. Taking a seat on the side of Okoye, she overlooked the food before down at her hands in her lap. Okoye moved a glass filled with orange juice closer to Shuri and then a bowl filled with Mealie Pap.
“Eat. I will not have you whine about food later when you are surrounded by it now.” Okoye firmly but in a soft tone. She meant no harm behind the comment but knew how Shuri could get when thinking about him. Which she understood fully. Though a few years had passed since losing T’Challa to sickness, the pain still did affect them both deeply. Whenever Shuri wanted to visit her or even go to visit Nakia, she assured Shuri was always welcomed here. The mutual silent understanding and comfort always remained between them. After watching Shuri take a spoonful of the milled white maize, and saw she began to eat more and some of the fruit. Okoye gave an approving nod before eating in silence, enjoying her company.
She had gotten better with managing her grief, she was able to speak more instead of shutting down to those around her. Okoye and Nakia did not rush her to heal but allowed her to process it her way.
Okoye cleared her throat, seemingly finding her plate more interesting than having this conversation. “His name is Attuma, he just happened to introduce himself to me yesterday afternoon actually. He takes care of his farm next door. I’ve met him because one of his young goats got out in my backyard. Now that I think about it, I may have to build a fence for when I make a spacing for my vegetable garden out here.”she said with a light frown before shrugging some. Though her heart skipped a beat at the way her name rolled off his tongue with such a deep voice that day and even now in her thoughts.
“Ah, so you know his name and everything now.” Shuri lifted a brow while moving to finish the bowl of fruit in front of her.
Okoye gave her a look, “Yes and nothing more. Although I may go over to his place later today and give him some of my food as an official welcome gift.”
She did a double look, “I’m sorry. Have I heard you correctly? You..wanting to give a gift to a stranger?”
“My neighbor.” Okoye corrected her.
“Ah, yes sure your neighbor who happened to be someone you have just met as well. He gets free food as a greeting and I have to pester you for food.” Shuri tilted her head up with a slight huff as if she was miffed.
Okoye’s mouth twitched as she tried to stop the smirk from forming on her lips, knowing she would only pout more. “Shuri. Clearly this man has lived here longer than I have and I don’t want to step on his toes nor have him step on mine. There is no harm in giving a peace offering and then going back to mind my own business in my own home eh?” Okoye huffed though she was met with a light tsk sound that Shuri made by sucking her teeth in response.
“Shuri!”
“ I am only kidding! Honest-! I am proud of your attempt to be a good neighbor, my sister. And thank you for breakfast even though I was late today. “ Shuri chuckled softly, moving to get up while gathering a few of the empty dishes to clean. Okoye remained seated, savoring the remainder of her juice and fruit while listening to running water and the gentle chime of dishes being moved around as Shuri began to wash them.
“Is that him?” Shuri questioned aloud while looking out the window while washing dishes.
Okoye began to gather her own dishes to bring to the kitchen. While she got up, she placed the dishes on the counter for Shuri to grab while leaning near the sink ridge to slightly open the curtain above the sink just to see. Since her kitchen was faced towards the back of her should could see the front and side of his barn.
Attuma’s long black hair was slicked back into a ponytail, a frown on his lips while he pushed the wheel barrel that was stacked highly with bags of soil. Being shirtless helped somewhat to keep him cool, his muscles flexing and tightening as he concentrated on keeping the stack straight as he pushed. His dark colored jeans were stained and crusted with dirt, Attuma had been working endlessly for hours. Hauling some of the bags of soil into the pig pen, he nudged the metal gate shut behind him with a slight grunt.
“Yes, that's him.” Okoye said softly, watching the other until the metal gates covered part of her view of him so rudely. She averted her gaze back to the dishes, taking the clean ones out to dry on a nearby wooden rack on the countertop nearby. Shuri gave a confused look while wrinkling her nose, and swore Okoye was acting strange at the sight of Attuma.
“Well whenever you’re going over there I would like to come with you.” Shuri declared bluntly with a determined look. Okoye opened her mouth to say she didn’t have to but chuckled instead, knowing that Shuri would just try to convince her otherwise if she did deny her. And she knew more questions would arise in the process.
“Well since you would like to join me to give this to him, then you can perhaps help me with this new dish I’ll make then, yeah? I cooked braised lamb yesterday and before you start, yes you can have that. I was going to give that to him but I have a new dish and a drink in mind. Just do me a favor and look in the pantry room. On the top shelf there should be a woven basket that should be big enough to carry for the food containers.”
Shuri hummed softly to herself while looking into the pantry, enjoying the faint scent of wood while reaching to grab the basket. The pantry still held some empty spaces but she was sure by the next time she did visit her. Any empty space she saw would be filled and organized. Placing the basket on the counter near them, the two fell into motion of making curry chicken and Igbo. Since visiting Nakia and switching to visit Okoye, her practice in food dishes had gotten surprisingly better. Moving from snacks and down to some not as difficult food dishes for dinner.
Idle chatter fell between the two as they helped one another prep and then started the two dishes.
**
Attuma ignored the burning in his arms and abdomen as went through the cycles of his duties that day. Unloading and loading hay to their designated areas for his cows, horses and the few goats he had. Passing out feed to his chickens and ducks. A light frown lingered on his lips while he worked, how his thoughts even now didn’t stray away from his new neighbor. Large hands that held great strength but worked quickly and precisely on a daily basis now moved with hesitation or even full on stopping. Time was not a thing to be wasted on his land and yet he wanted nothing more than to walk over to Okoye’s home and-. A grunt slipped Attuma while a scowl formed on his face, a burning sensation took over the palm of his right hand. Blood pooled in the center of it,while his other hand loosely gripped a blood stained curved knife. He held his hand away from the vegetables he just freshly cut and picked. There was no sense in ruining food for his careless mistakes.
"I should have known you were outside when you didn't answer your phone." A voice called from behind. He mentally cursed himself, to be so absorbed in his thoughts that he didn’t even hear a car approaching his house. Attuma glanced behind him before standing carefully. Namor flashing a smile while his arms were crossed over his chest. He wore a tan blazer with matching pants, his shirt was black that matched his squared frame sunglasses.
"Ah, I didn't realize that it was past noon already." Attuma sighed, allowing the mild annoyance to show on his face. He truly was behind in his duties today. Namor tilted his glasses up to be balanced on his head as he took a step closer to Attuma. Concern written on his face.
"Are you alright?"
Attuma nodded while he moved to a nearby water hose, cleaning the blood from his hand before wrapping it with a handkerchief. Running the water over his blade before sheathing it. "Yeah, I just lost grip on my knife while tending to my garden." He mused. Which was not a lie in itself but he did not say the other reason. Brown eyes that threaten to bring to his knees, lips that begged to be kissed. No. Attuma did not mention that Okoye was the reason he damn near sliced his hand to the point he would need stitches.
Namor eyed Attuma but decided to take the answer, a soft smile forming on his lips while he helped Attuma gather up his vegetables before following him to his home. He held the door open for Namor before shutting it behind him. He said nothing as Namor found his way into the kitchen, while he went to the bathroom to properly clean and bandage his hand. The house was old but spacious yet simple in design, a large living room that wasn't occupied until night time. Wood floors throughout the home, white walls that were decorated with the occasional painting in the living room. Paintings that Namor had given him or finished during his stays on the ranch. A black cushioned couch with a matching love seat was in his living room. Piles of books along with bills were littered on the wooden coffee table in front of the couch. A modern sized TV was in the living room as well but went untouched. A gift by Namor that Attuma felt obligated to at least set out. Granite countertops were throughout the kitchen, the kitchen had a large dinner table that was big enough to seat five or more people. Only one chair was slightly pulled back from the table. A place that Attuma often sat when he cooked for himself.
Water could be heard running as Namor called out to Attuma.
"Has Namora come to visit you yet?"
"No but she calls every once in a while and has told me someone from Wakanda Co. keeps denying your request about that house as of recently." Attuma said back leaving the bathroom while tightening his bandage. Grabbing a tank top from his bedroom, he walked back into the kitchen only to take a seat at the table. Glancing to his bandage hand, carefully flexing threw the pain and making sure his bandages will hold.
Namor had washed and placed them into a drainer bin to dry in the sink. "Ah, yes. Ms. Shuri. I have spoken to her twice. She seems firm in her stance about that house." There was a hint of humor in his tone but Attuma said nothing about it.
"The woman that stays there isn't named Shuri. But Okoye." Attuma said in a matter of fact tone. Namor turned around leaning against the sink counter with a questionable look. Attuma used to sneer when he saw realtors even look at the house. And often ignored them when they came to his property asking about the vacant home. But now he seemed indifferent and yet when he spoke her name. He could have swore there was a hint of admiration?
"I met her yesterday. " Was all Attuma said about the woman but Namor did notice the lack of malice Attuma usually held for strangers. Namor’s brows knitted as more questions seemed to arise more than anything. He was used to Attuma being blunt and short with him. But the way this was worded as if the two already spoke and appeared semi friendly. Who was this woman that seemed to get past his dislike of others with such ease. If Namora was here he was sure that she would pried information out of Attuma already. Let alone stalked over to Okoye’s house to see for herself.
“What do you need today? I do know this isn’t all just a social call wanting to check up on me.”
“That is not true, believe it or not we have been worried about you. More so you managing this place by yourself.” Namor said with a lifted brow. Attuma grunted in response though disbelief still was in his features. “ This was both you and Namora’s home and still is. I have no need to leave it. I am doing just fine by myself.” he said with a light shrug of his shoulders. Namor and Attuma looked at each in silence for a moment. Knowing that what he could say next could very much bring an old argument between them about the farm. He wanted to keep this place just like the both of them. But until legal matters were settled, maybe being away wasn’t a bad thing.
“There is always a place for you at Talokan if you want it, Attuma.” Namor offered quietly. Attuma simply nodded but said nothing else on the matter. The trio had grown up here all their lives. However their parents were pressured to sell some of their acres to the city. Namor had promised them both that he would get their acres back after their parents died. As much as Shuri sounded so interesting over the phone, her thin veiled sarcasm. This was their land by right and he will have to convince them to sell one way or another. So far had been successful in gaining back a few acres but there was always more work.
“I was hoping that I could at least convince you to leave and have dinner with me and Namora tonight. We could all pick a restaurant in the city and-” Namor said with a humorous look but frowned as a knock came to Attuma’s front door. The two exchanged looks but said nothing, another knock coming to his door. Two voices could be heard seemingly bickering with one another.
Attuma rose to his feet stalking over to the door preparing to order whoever dared to come on his property away. Pulling open the door his gaze went instantly to Shuri before settling on Okoye. A small smile formed on his lips while he gave a nod to them both. The light shimmer to skin made her look as if she was glowing in the sunlight. To him she looked gorgeous in that moment and yet regal.
“Ms.Okoye.”
“Attuma.”
Shuri wrinkled her nose once more at them frowning slightly, finding out instantly that her suspicions were correct about how odd her sister was acting. By Bast graces. Being friendly, my ass. She thought before coughing slightly, “Ah, Hello I am Shuri. We came to drop off food for you.” she said with a nod.
Attuma inclined his head to her before looking at Okoye who nodded as well, “Yes, I wanted to properly introduce myself and give you this. "she said softly before a gaze flickered behind Attuma’s bulky frame while she held out the bundle of food to him. Attuma took the package carefully, his fingers gently brushing against hers in the process.
“Ms. Shuri?” Namor called out with slight surprise, which caused Attuma to straighten and move slightly out of the doorframe when his cousin came close. Attuma still was the tallest of the two, though Namor was only a few inches shorter than him. The neatly wrapped food was Shuri’s anchor at that moment, she was sure she would have darted off if she wasn’t holding it. She had enough of him calling her and she did not want to see him. Or so she at least tried to convince herself that.
“Do not tell me you followed me out here and have convinced her neighbor to be dragged into your conversations as well? ” She quipped. Okoye’s gaze slowly shifted to Shuri as if silently warning her to hush. Shuri simply gave an innocent look before smiling some to herself.
Namor merely chuckled in response, his eyes sparkling with amusement while seemingly he brushed off the insult, “This is actually my family’s home and I am visiting my relative. He hummed. The soft oh that slipped Shuri’s lips did make her feel slightly embarrassed while handing the second package to Okoye. “Thank you, you both for this.” Attuma’s voice cutting in suddenly. “Well, we do not want to impose and do enjoy the food. It was nice to see you-” Okoye said on the verge of bidding farewell to both.
“Stay for dinner.” Attuma blurted out not wanting her to leave just yet. Oh, how the word please almost slipped his lips. Attuma didn’t dare look at Namor yet who was too busy absorbing the conversation, humored by the fact his cousin had found Okoye this charming. But lingering glances to Shuri who was already slightly turned away from them all. “Would you like to stay for dinner? Well both of you,” he said, eyeing Okoye for a moment and glancing at Shuri.
By Bast she wanted to say yes but it was Shuri that cut in first, “Thank you for the offer Attuma but for me, I have a few things that I need to do for work.” Namor had moved to place the food on the dinner table before coming back. Namor clapped Attuma’s shoulder,” Let’s catch up another day.” He said quickly to Attuma before bidding farewell to them both. Namor wanted to stay to get to know Okoye, but he wasn’t about to play the third wheel just for that either. It seemed Shuri had the same idea.
“Ms. Shuri-!” Namor called out to her after he slipped past both Attuma and Okoye. Shuri’s shoulders went stiff at the sound of his voice but she slowed enough just for Namor to catch up to her.
Okoye squinted her eyes at the retreating pair as Attuma smiled softly while shaking his head. He knew there would be several questions later but at least it was not in front of Okoye right now.
“Well Ms. Okoye, will you still join me though it will be just you and me tonight?” he questioned once more.
“I’d love to, Attuma.”
Notes:
Thank you so much for reading.
Its funny that Namor looks at Attuma strange but immediately forgot about the offer of wanting to take Attuma out for dinner.
Shuri knew well not third wheel with that, she probably too invested in choking on her food with the way Attuma and Okoye are starry eyed.
Any Nashuri will always be mentioned in the background for the focus of this story is about Attuma and Okoye by the way. Talokan and Wakanda are treated like companies rather than cities in this.
Chapter 3
Summary:
“Can you ride a horse?”
The question was sudden but an honest one while he glanced at her once more. Admiring how the light from the sun was now shifting, casting beautiful shadows on her face.
“Eh? Yes. I used to own a horse or well the horse doted on and was practically my own.” she explained carefully. Getting to his feet, he placed his glass down and pushed in his chair.
“Let's go for a ride then.”

Chapter Text
Okoye passed by him to come into his home and the light scent of sweet vanilla followed her. For her to smell so good and look good, he wondered if he was pulling her attention from someone else at the moment.
“ I am not sure if you would be interested in tea or perhaps something stronger.” He called back looking at the kettle on his stove only to search through his cabinets for wine.
Okoye looked back at him, pulling the containers of food out carefully and placing them on the table. “I think since I brought you tea I suppose wine would be a good second choice to have” she gave a light shrug of her shoulders.
Due to Namor's habit of taking or tasting his liquor or wine when he wasn’t around. Attuma had placed most of his bottles on the very top of the cabinet hoping to make Namor leave his wine bottles alone. Frowning some, when noticing at least one bottle was out of place he made a note to himself to tell Namor to get his own damn collection. Snatching a bottle down he began to pull at the cork while fuming about his cousin.
“Do you need help with opening it? I do have a corkscrew I can get back at my home.”
The scent of vanilla wrapped around him once more he could practically feel her warmth. Curious brown eyes stared at him and then at the bottle in his hand, she was standing close to him and Attuma couldn’t help but let his gaze wander down to her lovely breasts.
Clearing his throat he felt his mouth begin to feel dry, and his grip on the wine instantly tightens. “No, I think I have it.” He said a little too quickly. A loud pop was heard, the cork flying out of the wine bottle straight to the ceiling missing Attuma’s face by mere inches.
Okoye jumped but brushed aside Attuma to get a towel to help clean up the wine that was now spilling everywhere. First his hand and now almost taking a cork to his eye, Okoye was a distraction to him that was causing bodily harm. Moving to place the wine bottle in the sink, he grabbed another towel just to clean the red wine that dripped all over his hands and splattered on his shirt.
“Well, it looks like much didn’t spill too much.” Okoye straightened to place the damp towel after she wiped up the wine off the ground. “And are you okay?” she questioned .“Yes. Just maybe I have shaken the bottle and didn’t realize it was almost pointing to my face. But let's eat before the food gets cold.” Attuma lied even though he offered a reassuring smile to her, his dimples showing some. Okoye nodded but leaned close to brush her hand against Attuma’s cheek, wiping away the specs of red wine off his cheek.
“You have gotten wine everywhere.” Okoye chuckled while patting his shoulder and moved back to the table. Attuma felt the heat rise in his face while his cheek still felt warmth from her touch, he was glad she pulled away from him. He was unsure if he would have resisted leaning more into her touch, allowing her to trace his face if she had the desire. Attuma gathered plates and silverware for both of them while taking the wine bottle from the sink.
The smell of cooked meat and spices filled the air quickly, Attuma handing silverware to Okoye before he sat down beside her to reach the dishes. “I am not sure if you ever had this but this is called Chicken curry, Shuri helped me, and also a dessert called Basbousa. “She explained. Attuma gave himself a generous helping of rice before getting just as much curry to cover it. “It smells delicious, I have heard Namor speak of a dish like this perhaps at a restaurant he’s been to. I’ve never heard of Basbousa though.” Attuma stated between small bites.
Okoye served herself but taking a smaller helping of the food and moved to pour herself wine and some for Attuma. “Mm, it's a dish from my homeland, well both of them are. A sweet like cake. “ she mused. “Curry Chicken can be spicy but I asked Shuri to ease up on that for I was uncertain if you can handle it. “ A soft grunt came from him, “Do not alter your dish because of me, I prefer it spicy anyway.” Attuma cleaned his plate only to help himself to some more of the Curry Chicken, Okoye was glad that she decided to make a big pot of it even though Shuri grumbled in the process. His body was warm while his face was flushed but he ignored it. The dish was spicy, and his tongue was burning but yet he had the audacity to ask for her normal level of spicy for the dish. He couldn’t bring himself to stop eating because it was too good. The mixture of spices was refreshing to him, better than most dishes he cooked for himself. There was a glint of humor in Okoye’s eyes when she looked at him ever so often but she didn’t say anything.
“Do you do everything out here by yourself?”
The question came after a moment of silence and after Attuma finally had his fill of food, pulling his glass of wine closer to him. He nodded just as he took a sip, enjoying the strong but bitter taste of the wine.
“For a couple of years now, sometimes my cousins help me but it’s mostly me.” Attuma and Okoye allowed the surprised expression on her features.
“That is impressive considering running a ranch is very hard work. Your cousins should help you more, from day to day things could be difficult.” she mused. Attuma shook his head, “It may be difficult but I will not ask them to do that. They may join me on their own will.”
“I could help you on days that I am not busy if you do not mind.”
Attuma damn near choked on his wine and stared at Okoye, “ I am flattered but you said it yourself that it is hard work. Do not make promises you can not fulfill.” Part of him hoped that this wasn’t Okoye’s way of proving to flirt with him.
“I know what I said, Attuma. I have you know that I am well aware of what goes on in a ranch, my-.” she started to say not wanting to mention W'Kabi, her ex-husband she feared that it would change the mood. “Look, if you ever do need help and I am close by just let me know,” she said sincerely. Attuma glanced at his wine glass, tilting it carefully while watching the dark liquid for a second. Women that have made passes at him in the past had said the same thing and he never humored it because of his disinterest.
Perhaps the wine was making her mind swim but excitement filled her as she got up to her feet, she followed him back outside his home and around to the back of the house. The wired fence stretched away from the property but was gated off with a wire fence giving enough pasture for the two horses and a few cows he had whenever out for rotational grazing. Since the cows were out strolling about in the gated pasture, the horses were in their stalls. Attuma led them to the barn, pushing the doors open wide while he spoke, “ I am going to take a guess and say you were raised on a ranch?” he questioned while Okoye carefully peered into the few gates doors where some horses were facing away. “Yes,” she said softly and Attuma nodded seemingly content with the answer for now.
Though she failed to mention again that even her ex-husband had one and both equally tending to the lands. Okoye weighed the options if things were to grow serious she would mention him, but for now, she couldn’t. That subject was a layer of personal issues she didn’t want to go into. Besides, she did notice that Attuma hasn’t yet said anything about his own personal life.
For all she knew, he could be entertaining this evening just as much as she was. Pointing at the black mare, who was faced away from the gate. “What are all your horses' names? This one is very pretty.” Attuma moved to stand by Okoye,” That's Nalo. And the chestnut that's now looking at you is Azi” he replied moving to pet Azi. “ Getting a horse bit piece, Attuma moved back by Azi to slip the piece into the stallion's mouth and secure it. Opening the gate, he guided the horse out near the saddles. Okoye gave the two space, admiring how Azi seemed to be eager about going for a ride. Azi tries its best to gently tug at Attuma’s shirt or even nudge him. Placing folded blankets on the back of the horse, Attuma finally placed it on a saddle and secured it.
Snapping on the reins, he looked to Okoye who came close to his side admiring Azi. “Don’t mind him, He’s showing out because you are here. “ Attuma offered his hand to Okoye to take so he could help her onto the saddle. A soft slender hand met a strong grasp, she held onto him firmly while holding the pommel of the saddle to ease up onto the horse. Attuma only let go of her hand to lightly hold her hips to guide her and to make sure she didn’t fall. He climbed onto the saddle next, only shifting some to get his footing right once on. His strong arms around Okoye to get both reigns, her back pressing lightly into his warm broad chest.
With a firm nudge into Azi’s side and the flick of the reins, the horse moved into a slow trot. Each light bounce pushed Attuma’s and Okoye’s hips into one another while Okoye gripped the pommel, but she prayed to Bast to cease her hammering heart. “Okoye-” Attuma said too softly into her ear, though she swore she could hear the humor in his tone when her shoulders tensed slightly. He was enjoying this too much.
“You said you were familiar with horseback riding and if you would like I could give you the reins. To the right by the pasture, there is a trail path that circles back around this area. It takes us by a lake and we make our way back again.” Holding the leather reins in one hand, he held them close to Okoye who took them after a moment.
“Do you not believe me?” The question was blunt but she was curious but she wasn’t complaining. “I did at first but usually those that aren’t familiar horses tend to get nervous once near one or riding one. You didn’t.” he pointed out, watching as Okoye steered Azi onto the trail path that led to the lake. Rust and pink hues were scattered throughout the clouds as the sun had slowly begun to set. Okoye huffed and shook her head, an honest answer that came from Attuma at least. The air began to cool down, a welcoming change from the dry heat that lingered all early afternoon.
“My most recent horse was named M20, he was light gray but looked white from afar. A very kind horse tried his best to follow me around everywhere. I wasn’t his true owner but doted on me” she said with a faint smile. “Azi reminds me of him, he would not waste time nudging me or trying his best to eat or pull my clothing.” she chuckled. For once she was glad that Attuma couldn’t see her face, the longing for the horse lingered in her gaze.
“And where is he now?” He questioned, allowing one arm to carefully wrap around Okoye’s waist but his hands settled on the pommel of the saddle. “M20 is with his true owner and that was someone that I had been with at the time. My ex-husband,” she admitted.
There was a long silence, several questions that lingered in the back of Attuma’s mind now all being answered at once. Why he didn’t see anyone with her, no ring on her finger as well. But just as those questions were silenced, more arose with him.
“You miss him.” Attuma pointed out carefully while looking at the path ahead of him. The statement held a double meaning. While a foreign feeling burned his chest at the thought of her being distracted by another. Okoye’s sigh only made the sensation worse. Grassy plains stretched as far as the eye could see. Wildflowers of various colors all spread out before him, the scent of floral faintly moved passed them every so often.
“M20? Yes. The animals on the farm that I helped raise, were mine just as much as his. Yes.” Okoye frowned some. “Mm,” Attuma said softly, what odd sensation he felt that he could only label as jealousy slipped him.
“He took it away from you?”
“I gave my portion away, I wanted nothing to do with him or anything that could tie me to him.” Memories of her and W’kabi arguing with one another filled her mind, how W’Kabi tried to convince her to stay. That the moment of weakness he had that made him look to other women for comfort would not happen again. That he loved Okoye and that he would do better for her. This weighed on her heart, being forced to leave the memories of a proud W’kabi learning to garden for her. Or being chased by his own chickens out of the hen house. The brief envious that W’Kabi would have over his own horse M20 would favor Okoye and even try to push W’Kabi away. All these light memories could not outweigh the bad ones that hurt her. W'Kabi cheated on her and in return had the gall to still hope for Okoye's forgiveness.
Sudden warmth around her made her gasp, bringing her back to the reality that she was still with Attuma. Attuma’s strong arms had wrapped around her firmly, “ I am sorry, I shouldn’t have brought that up. If you would like to go back already we can.” he said quietly to her. He had seen the tension, the distant look as if Okoye was on the verge of shutting him out.
“No, it is not your fault. And no, I want to see the lake you mentioned.” Okoye stated, though placed one of her hands on his forearms and patted lightly. She welcomed that there was no judgment or ill thoughts towards her about this confession. Okoye had feared this would turn the evening into a short awkward one.
“We’re almost there, just pass that hill” Attuma pointed ahead of them while the grassy plains slowly became an incline. Attuma placed a hand over Okoye’s gesture for her to stop Azi at the top of the hill. The incline was high enough to overview his ranch and her home, and the road that led into town. Giving a beautiful view of the land and the lake itself. The sun had disappeared below the horizon, and orange and pink were replaced with deep blues and purples in the sky. Those same colors reflect on the calm large lake.
“It’s beautiful.”
Attuma nodded slowly, taking his hand off hers to place it back on her waist, Azi moved forward again down the incline and closer to the lake. “This was a favorite place of ours as children to visit, back then the lake was filled with fish too. We could swim all day, catch fish and go home to eat,” he explained. “When part of this property was lost, it became overfished and damaged. For the most part, I have repaired the pier and have it where if you catch it you release it back into the lake. This allows the fish a healthy cycle of growth and increases its population of them.”
Okoye didn’t pry about the term of lost, knowing that some type of legal battle had to ensue over the area. “Well I am glad that this is back in your care,” she said with a light smile. The wind began to pick up some, bringing more cool winds as it became darker. The lake was quiet besides fishes breaking the surface every so often to eat bugs that dared to hover too close to the surface. She steered Azi with ease, urging the horse to go back towards the hill to start making their way back to the ranch. Attuma chuckled to himself, his deep chuckle made his chest rumble some. Part of him was certain that Azi didn’t mind Okoye either for he had taken to her naturally. As many times Azi had pulled his reins out of Namor’s hand purely out of spite. Azi was very good for Okoye this evening.
“What?”
“Mm nothing, just Azi seems to like you too,” he confessed after a moment. A soft laugh was his reward from her, not minding how she leaned into him while they scaled the hill. “Oh, so it isn’t just that Azi likes me, hm.” she teased lightly. “Do not tell me I must spell it out for you.” he quipped back. “No, I think you almost taking a cork to your eye did let me know everything that I need to know. “ she hummed but laughed at Attuma’s slight huff. Each time he came close, she saw the way he froze up while soaking in every part of her. She wasn’t blind when his eyes lingered on her.
The night sky revealed bright stars that scattered out as the moon began to slowly raise. The path back seemed way too short for Okoye’s liking but she enjoyed it. “Thank you and thank you Azi for taking us to the lake today. "She said, reaching to lightly pat the horse while approaching the pasture. Attuma’s hand slid further up Okoye’s stomach slowly pushing her back towards him, while he leaned over her shoulder.
“Perhaps we can do this again.” Attuma offered while Okoye looked up at him, searching his eyes while he did the same. “I am sure Azi would enjoy that too.” He leaned closer to her, brushing his nose against hers. Feeling her hand touch his cheek, Attuma moved to place his lips against hers carefully. Afraid that she would know that he wanted to kiss her since his first night seeing her. Feeling her lips part for him, his warm tongue brushed against her slowly and Attuma’s head began to spin. The kiss deepened, and Attuma’s embrace tightened while their tongues swirled and pushed against one another until they were forced to pull for a breath.
“Yes, very soon,” she whispered against his lips. Attuma smiled, pecking her lips and then pecking her forehead.
Notes:
Finally an update. These two have been flirting more with their hands than anything!
Thank you again for those that have been reading my story. I thought it would be nice to see Attuma slightly open to her and Okoye definitely opening up. Making their relationship a official thing now.
Chapter 4
Summary:
Memories of Attuma’s lips meeting hers came to mind, his flustered look during dinner and his sweet smile that revealed his dimples. Okoye knew that Shuri was just bursting to answer questions about last night and she will give a few but not everything.
“He says thank you for helping me make dinner and we also went horseback riding yesterday. “ Okoye hummed. Shuri smiled to herself, loving the light tone from her sister and this seemed to ease some of her worries. “And-” Okoye started to say while she moved to push herself to her feet. “I’ve decided on seeing him again and I may help him on his ranch every once in a while. Much to his protest about me helping but I don’t mind.” Okoye mentioned this while moving to the bathroom. Shuri gave a surprised look but smiled while moving around her own room getting her clothes ready for the day. ” I know how much you miss that but still if Attuma hurts you I will pay him a visit.”

Chapter Text
Light from the rising sun slowly filled Okoye’s room, her form slowly shifting just enough to pull the blankets higher over herself and a little over her head. Anything to extend her sleep just for a little bit. A pleasant dream that she knew was already slipping from her. She stood over a full garden proudly, a basket in her arms filled to the brim with fresh vegetables. Someone called her name just as she turned to look behind her-. The vibration of her phone broke the silence and pulled her from her dream, making her mumble under her breath. She tried pulling herself back to deep sleep, but her phone vibrated once more. “Oh, Bast. What-?!..” she growled softly, moving to snatch her phone off the lampstand.
Sleepy eyes strained to focus on the screen, the worry lines on her forehead smoothing read the name Shuri on her notifications. Shifting to sit up slowly, her blankets pooled around her waist. Calling Shuri on her phone she laughed quietly and Shuri picked up immediately, “Mm, good you answered. I was already on the verge of dialing Aneka, I will tell her to put away her knives and spear for now.” Shuri quipped though there was still drowsiness in her voice. Okoye chuckled softly, but still lightly scolded her, “ Shuri, no. But thank you I am okay and things went well last night.”
Okoye chuckled to herself but decided to not press Shuri about that this time at least. She knew Shuri was partially serious about that threat.
“I have to go though. I am meeting someone for lunch but I will call you afterward. Shuri said after a moment. “Oh? Did you finally get in contact with Nakia or Riri? I know you have been meaning to catch up for a while now with either of them.” Okoye said while placing her phone down just so she could wash her face and brush her teeth. “No, it's not them.” Shuri bit the inside of her cheek while her stomach began to flutter. “It’s Namor.”
“What?!” Okoye gurgled out in the midst of brushing her teeth. “It’s nothing like that, it's just we were meeting up to talk about a few dispute issues with Attuma’s land. Well, their land. I told him that your house is not up for discussion but in return, I could help assist him and Namora with other legal disputes he has.” Shuri stammered out. Okoye rinsed out her mouth and wiped her face, she scoffed in response. She should have known the way Namor instantly gave chase to Shuri.
“Ukuthetha ngokunyaniseka!”( Being honest!) Shuri said after a moment though she failed to mention Namor’s bright smile and how he was picking her up for their lunch date. Okoye had no room to talk and she understood where Shuri stood about Attuma. But this was Shuri, her little Shuri, though she was an adult she would always be her little sister to her.
“Lumnka, eh?” (Be careful,eh?)
“Always. I will talk to you soon.” Shuri hummed before hanging up with Okoye. A sleeveless blue mock neck top was pulled from her closet, with a pair of jeans she didn’t mind dirtying up later. Her mood was light today, still riding the pleasant feelings from her date last night. There was a light step in her walk when she left her house. Though just as she was about to step out of her door, her path was blocked by a basket. The same one she had taken over to Attuma’s the previous evening. In the basket were all the dishes she had brought neatly stacked and clean. A bouquet of flowers that were freshly cut bound in a white ribbon with a small folded note in the middle of it. A soft oh slipped her lips while reaching for the basket, cradling it with one arm while reaching for the flowers with her other hand. Smiling softly to herself recognizing the flowers from the fields that they had passed together on their trail ride the other day. Pink phlox that complimented big petals of violets. She moved to put the flowers and her basket into her home, looking for a vase to place the flowers into freshwater. Humming at the light smell of powdery scent. She placed the vase on the dinner table and carefully pulled out the folded note that was also bound with a tan thread when she looked at it closer. Carefully untie the thread, she unfolded the letter and read it.
Okoye,
By the time I did stop by it was still very early in the morning and I did not want to wake you. But still thank you for dinner the other day and I enjoyed spending time with you afterward. I hope to see you soon.
-Attuma-
She shook her head lightly while a soft smile still lingered on her lips, she placed the note against her chest before putting it down on the table near the basket. A sweet gesture that made her heart flutter and made her wonder about Attuma. Bast, this man was too much and yet it did excite her. Okoye did move to leave her home once again but moved to drive in for the few errands she needed to do. Determined to start her garden today and if there was enough time to make a good meal, make enough for two to share again.
When was the last time W’Kabi did this for her? Welcome her with flowers or dare to be romantic with her? When did the love start fading from them both that she didn’t even notice until it was too late? What floating feeling she felt at that moment was fading, each step toward her car felt heavy. Okoye had driven into town to gather her supplies for her garden and complete any other errands she could think of while there. Worrying about the affairs of Wakanda Co as security and security for the late T’Challa and Shuri had always been her focus. Okoye realized just how much she chose to push away from her while working, many arguments she refused to have with him over little things. She believed that W’Kabi’s distant behavior was just him being petty with her due to being away because of work for so long.
Her hands tighten on the railing of the shopping cart, and a frown on her lips while she moves with long strides to certain aisles to gather various items she needs. Maybe having a few weeks off was a bad idea, although the time off wasn’t her idea in the first place Shuri’s insisting during her time separating from W’Kabi. Briefly, she thought to tell Shuri that having all this time away from work was a mistake and at the most, she only needed a few days to settle in. Work settled her mind, working out steeled her from the weight that threatened to close around her at the realization that W’Kabi was now a previous chapter in her life. Either of those distractions right now made things difficult for her.
After stopping at a few other stores, she drove back home anxious about the call back from Shuri to bring up the idea of going back to work sooner. Carrying several bags while trying to unlock her front door, she nudged the door open with her foot just so she could at least place her bags on the floor inside. Okoye pulled one of the large bags of dirt towards her once back at her car, hauling it over her shoulder with a soft grunt.
“Need a hand?”
With her arms wrapped tightly around the bag, she turned to look at Attuma with a light glare, who raised his hands up with a confused look. “Hey, I didn’t mean to scare you but wanted to see you after I had finished my own duties today.” Okoye’s gaze was soft and her frown left her lips though the worry lines on her temple remained. Thoughts about her previous marriage with W’Kabi still lingered in her mind, though she was trying her best to at least push them aside.
Attuma took a step closer to her, pulling the bag of dirt from her hands carefully. “You didn’t scare me-” Okoye responded dryly, making a move to just carry the bag of dirt inside but stopped when Attuma got close.
“Everything, okay?”
“Yes and I don’t need help.”
“Okoye-...” Attuma searched her face with concern, watching as Okoye sighed softly avoiding his gaze.
“Was it the flowers or something I did last night?”
“What-? No! I love them. And no! Everything was lovely yesterday.” Okoye felt her lips press into a thin line while she shook her head before looking at him fully. “Attuma, I loved your flowers and your note. I am sorry, I think while in the city, perhaps I have ruined my own mood by still not memorizing where everything is located” Okoye admitted while realizing just how curt she was being with him. A quick partial lie is better than telling Attuma about her and W’Kabi slow spiraling marriage. Not after having such a wonderful date with him the other day. The last thing she wanted to do was ruin that but wouldn’t be surprised if she did unintentionally.
Attuma nodded while he studied her, gesturing for her to lead the way he easily placed the bag of dirt on one shoulder before moving to grab the other. Easily he carried both of the bags for her, following her in step into her home once she opened the door wide enough for him to come in. He didn’t believe her fully but assumed that if he pressed her right now, she wouldn’t tell him for some reason.
“Just set them by the back door for I can always just carry them outside later. Thank you, Attuma.”
“Mm. What are you gonna do with these anyway?” He questioned while placing one bag down with a soft thud before placing the second one down afterward.
“Well while the sun is still high today I wanted to start my garden today. I even have the materials for what I need for a fence in my trunk.” Okoye had kneeled to grab the rest of her shopping bags, placing them on her dinner table.
“Well, I’ll help you.”
“Attuma-..”
“ I am sure I can provide additional tools you’ll need anyway.” Attuma offered.
“I can not ask you to do that when you have been working hard all day today as it is.” She shook her head.
“Okoye, let me help you. Besides, it's one of the things I fully enjoy when I'm home.” Attuma said, crossing his arms over his chest. Okoye’s brows knitted, frowning lightly before she gave in.
“If you grow tired or even collapse in the dirt-...”She trailed off with a light glare which Attuma merely smirked. “I will not complain about the care you will give me.” he teased back at first.
“I will stop if I feel tired, honestly.”
Okoye almost quipped back that she would leave him in her garden but didn’t. Giving a satisfied nod, moving to open the backdoor for them both. Attuma grabbed both of the bags of dirt to take them outside while she went to the remaining supplies from her car in the front before joining him in her backyard. The two didn’t waste any time once Okoye pointed out the small area she had picked for her garden. With the ground being soft and a few feet away from her kitchen window, she’ll be able to monitor her garden whenever she is in her kitchen. With the help of Attuma, removing the grass went quickly along with installing welded fencing around the garden.
Idle chatter passed between them while helping each other, Attuma finding himself passing more glances to Okoye than he cared to admit at that moment. Not once did Okoye’s pace slow even as the sun began to beam on them. Attuma brought his wheel barrel from his home with a bag of composted manure for the garden to have and spades to use.
“I was thinking that perhaps doing the no digging option would be easier for any transplants I decide to get later.”
“I’ve tried that method on a few of my plants, it is less work and it doesn’t disturb the ground much.” Attuma nodded in agreement.
Okoye’s features were serene while she carefully placed and patted the fresh mulch with some of the manure. A change from the distant look that lingered on her features earlier with the heavy feeling that surrounded her then. She welcomed the light cool breezes that came during the heat of the day. Fresh gardening gloves were now stained on Okoye’s hands along with the knee area on her pants, she looked to Attuma who was still petting mulch down with his back turned to her. His hair was tied into a messy bun to cool his neck. His long sleeve plaid shirt was tossed aside, which left him working shirtless in the sun.
“What seedlings are you starting with?” he questioned with a grunt while raising to his feet once done.
“Cucumbers, tomatoes, and squashes. I took the rest of the stakes I saw at the store but I do need to go back and search for more.”
“I may have some that I can give you and before you say no, I do not need them right now.” Attuma slightly shook his head. Already catching on that Okoye favored the word no greatly.
“You have done enough but still thank you,” Okoye added quietly. Attuma gave a light hm in response and brushed the dirt and grass off himself after taking off his own gloves.
With the garden practically done all that was left was planting the seedlings and watering them. Attuma had already gathered the bag that had Okoye’s packets of vegetable seeds she bought.
‘Wait, before that. Come with me, we still have a bit before the sun begins setting. I think we do deserve a break. ” Okoye gestured for Attuma to follow her back inside her home. Attuma grabbed his shirt off the ground, rubbing the sweat off his face and neck. He wasn’t complaining with the type of dry heat they had. Attuma lingered by the door partially because of a vent but did not want to track dirt threw her house. He watched Okoye who fetched two glasses to fill with ice and two cold bottles of tea from her fridge.
Okoye handed a glass to Attuma and placed a tea bottle next to him while leaning on the counter. Slender fingers toyed with her glass while her gaze went outside to look at her garden, she glanced at Attuma who moved closer to her side to peek outside the window with her.
“Ah, no wonder you picked this spot then.” He said taking a drink of tea before placing his glass back down on the counter. Okoye offered a smile in response, already excited about the idea of her new plants sprouting.
“Thank you again.”
Attuma reached for her, his fingers reaching to caress her jaw lightly while he spoke, “You’re welcome but I told you, I didn’t mind. And it's good to see you in a better mood than earlier.” He leaned close to her moving to kiss her temple, Okoye playfully pushing him back while she spoke. “Mm, you are covered in dirt-” she yelped when he pulled her towards him kissing her cheek before letting her go.
Attuma went back outside just as Okoye reached for her empty tea bottle to toss at his head, wanting to wipe that smug grin off his lips.
“Attuma!”
“Yes? I am outside already wanting to help you finish before it's dark!” he called back with a slight chuckle. He heard her scoff but didn’t bother turning around to look for the bag of seeds that was left outside.
—------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Attuma slipped his shirt back on but didn’t bother to button it while he stood next to Okoye who was watering her garden. The sky was dark, and faint sounds of chirps from crickets in the distance. Both were silent but still enjoying the company of one another, “You chose a good time to do this, I know next month it’ll still be warm but a lot of rain since it's close to spring. Good for the soil and the gardens.” he said softly. He almost didn’t want to disturb her, enjoying her faint humming while she worked. Once Okoye had turned off the water, he helped her gather the tools and any other stray materials that were used. Helping her prop some of the tools up near her backdoor, “I might have a shelf for these, I just need to check my shed tomorrow. And before you say no, if it can help save you a trip to the store by all means have it.”
Okoye’s lips parted but instead, she just chuckled, she had been so used to saying no. To insist she could do it herself, which she could but it was nice to have help at times. Seemingly Attuma was just as stubborn, something Okoye has yet to admit about herself. Her steps had slowed for some reason, she reached for the knob on her backdoor to go inside but hesitated. She turned quickly blurting out, ignoring the nervousness pooling in her stomach while she spoke, “I know that it's late but come have dinner with me. It's the least I can do for today.” Attuma was going to tell her goodnight although he too was slow at leaving. His stomach seemed to growl at the mention of food along with thoughts about the chicken curry she made the other night. “I’ll come back quickly, I do not think you will like the idea of me treading dirt through your home.” he teased. Okoye sucked her teeth, “That is right and you would be cleaning it up if you did.” she shot back though he was out of earshot. Attuma gathered his own supplies, he had brought with him and placed them in his wheel barrel heading to his home with long strides.
As promised Attuma did come back quickly, knocking on her back door she yelled for him to come in. His stomach growled once more when hit with the scent of spices and cooked meat while stepping inside. Pushing some of the damp strands out of his face, he placed the wine bottle on the counter and placed his jacket down on the back of a chair near the dinner table. Getting dressed in the dark was instant regret once he glanced down at himself at that moment. His maroon mid-sleeve shirt was partially wrinkled in some places, even if the material seemed to fit him well over his broad chest and arms. His pants were a little wrinkled, no amount of smoothing with his hands would get rid of it. Okoye on the other hand looked lovely, his gaze ran over her figure. A long black dress that was high on the neck, cutouts that form to her curves that revealed more skin.
“Everything is almost done so take a seat if you would like to.” Okoye glanced her over her shoulder to Attuma, while carefully stirring her rice. He nodded but decided to remain standing up looking around the living room in silence. Overlooking some of her décor and pictures, he picked up a photo carefully of Okoye donning a red suit.
“Come, it's ready,” she called with a satisfied nod, turning off the stove and moving her dishes from the heat. Attuma moved quickly, grabbing another cloth towel to help grab the second pan for her to place on the table. Just as Attuma went to get the wine bottle for them, Okoye shook her head, “For you to attempt to poke out your eye again, go sit.” she teased. A slight huff left Attuma but he did move to sit down at the table, “I would not do such a thing this time.” he mumbled.
A loud pop came from the wine bottle once Okoye screwed out the cork, and sat across from him. “Ah, this is spicy grilled suya kebabs with jollof rice,” she explained, pouring them both a glass of wine. “It's beef and well a favorite dish that Shuri seems to ask me about .” she mused watching Attuma pick up one of the sticks carefully in his large hands but wasting no time tasting. Her lips twitched threatening to smile at the sight of Attuma eating so quickly, “There is plenty. Truly.” Attuma's jaws slowed only briefly once figuring out he was shoveling food as if it was his last meal. “Thank you,” he said quietly between bites, his cheeks flushed though it couldn’t be determined if it was from being embarrassed or the spices. For Attuma, years had passed since the last time he had a meal cooked by another. The last time was when Namora and Namor still stayed with him. Each of them took turns cooking for one another but it was decided then that Namor was the better cook among them all. He wondered if Namor or Namora would be up for the idea of teaching him more dishes to cook for Okoye and himself. “
“This is very good. Who taught you how to cook?”
“My father and a few dishes from my mother, both of them always took turns cooking as far as I remember. I have passed some of these same dishes to Shuri though she still prefers me to cook them. She says and I quote, something is missing whenever she tries her hand at the dishes” Okoye snorted while pushing her plate away from herself once she had her fill. With W’Kabi she did all the cooking until he began to call letting her know he wouldn’t be home. After that, she either only cooked enough for herself or not at all. Even though she fussed she enjoyed cooking and always adored the fact that Shuri looked forward to her cooking. It seemed Attuma was the same way.
“I’ll have to make Pok Chuc for you.”
“Pok? Chuc?” Okoye gave a curious look trying to pinpoint the name itself.
“The best way I could describe it is thin-cut pork that is usually grilled, we would usually have it with lime, avocado, and thin-cut onions with rice. Although I recently started adding chili peppers to it for some added spice. It's a family recipe, my cousin’s mother passed it down to him and then myself and my other cousin.” Attuma explained. “The first time I made it Namora said I had the house filled with smoke. If not careful, with the meat being so thin it can burn fast while cooking. “ he mused. “I do not remember this part but Namor said I insisted I still ate the charred meat because I was too prideful to toss it. He said that it was an absolute spectacle to see me trying to eat pork that was as hard as jerky.” Attuma shook his head with a faint smile as Okoye chuckled.
“Well, I’d love to try it. It does sound delicious!”
Attuma got to his feet to collect Okoye’s empty plate and then his own to clean. “Attuma that isn’t necessary I can do it besides you are a guest-” she reached to touch his hand to get him to stop. Looking back into her eyes, Attuma did stop only to call her name in a gentle tone to cut off, “Okoye, do not act as if this is some burden for me. This will take a few minutes and I already told you before that I don’t mind.”
“Attuma- you are a guest and I will not have my guest doing that" she repeated in a firm tone.
“Would you be satisfied to help me find the bowls to place the leftovers in while I wash?”
Okoye slowly removed her hands from atop Attuma’s getting to her feet, “Fine” she muttered though he chuckled when he heard her mumble the word stubborn.
Attuma rolled up his sleeves further up his arms to keep them dry, he welcomed the hot water on his hands while washing bowls and pots carefully and placed them in the next sink to rinse. She stood next to him, taking the clean dishes that were submerged in the rinse water to dry off with a cloth she had.
“Are you not exhausted?” Okoye asked with a light yawn, carefully drying out the wine glasses before she set them on the nearby drying rack.
Attuma lifted a brow but shook his head, “No, I am sometimes sore but no I am not tired.” he said lifting a hand from the soapy water to flex his fingers. The cut on his hand was healing, only a pale line ran across his palm. Thankful for the old recipe of healing salve he kept around his home. Okoye cast a glance at him, taking another dish from the rinse water.
Shrugging his shoulders, “It is hard to explain, it is difficult but for the most part, I enjoy it. When one enjoys what they do, providing for the animals and tending to the land. I do not get exhausted.”
Okoye smiled to herself, “No, I get it when you explain it like that, it is just you don’t hear or see that very often now.” He placed the last dish into the rinse water before drawing the soapy water out. Clearing the sink of the residue he dried off his hands with another cloth, “See? Told you it wouldn’t take long” he teased lightly coming close to place a hand on her hip. Sucking her teeth, "That's not the point, Attuma.” He couldn’t help but tease while pulling her close to his side, he hummed at her warmness and smiled when he felt her press more of herself into him. Placing a light kiss on her forehead, drifting a warm hand up her back until he reached the back of her neck lightly massaging the muscles there.
She was melting in his touch, rough hands that could be so gentle and with the faint scent of pine that came from him. Attuma called her name which she barely registered with a light hm, “Get some rest. “ he started to say. “Go, or I will carry you to your couch right now,” he muttered. “And what if I want you to stay?” The question was faint from her burying her face in his chest but he still heard her. His large hands reached to cup her face, brushing his nose against hers. He wondered if she could feel his heart thumping loudly within his chest, or knew just how much the scent of jasmine made his head stir. Attuma’s lips hovered dangerously close to hers “I can if that's what you wa-”. His words were cut off by their lips crashing together and he couldn’t help the faint satisfied noise that slipped him. A hand braced his neck while the other grasped at his hair, he ran his tongue carefully over her lips and groaned once she parted them for him. Their tongues swirling and pushing one another, he sucked at her bottom lip and he relished in the small groans that came from Okoye. He picked her up and this made her wrap her legs around him instantly to hold on.
The only protests that came from her were she wanted him to lock her backdoor before they left the kitchen. He assured her with more kisses and whispers that no one would come in for they were the only two for miles. And if someone did come in he would hear them. Attuma carried her through her living room and down the short corridor to her bedroom. Laying her down gently onto the bed, pulling off his maroon shirt he tossed it to the side. Her chest rising and falling from heated breaths, her gaze going over his toned chest and abs. Okoye’s dress was pushed up to her thighs and filled with creases. Sitting up reaching for the tie on the back of her neck that held the top of her dress in place she tugged gently, instantly the material fell revealing her full breasts. Removing his own pants and shorts Attuma edged onto the bed, reaching to grab at the hem of the dress and gathering more of the dress to help. With careful tugs, he pulled the dress past her shapely hips and off her legs tossing it behind him.
Attuma instantly closed the distance between them, pressing his lips to as many places as he could reach. Trailing warm damped kisses down her neck all the way to her breasts, the soft heated gasp that came from her encouraged him. Wrapping his lips around one of her nipples, Attuma sucked gently, swirled, and flicked his tongue over and over until it was erect before attending to the other one. He loved the way at each time his tongue rubbed against them, she tried pressing her hips into him or gently tugged at his hair. She was wearing nothing but her lace panties until she felt him hook a finger under the band and began to carefully pull them. Okoye only pulled away to help and slightly lift her hips when Attuma slid her panties off of her. Her face began to warm up catching Attuma’s gaze going over her fully, the way a faint smile was on his lips even while he nudged her to lay back and she felt those light kisses all over stomach. Slowly lowering himself between her thighs, his tongue slipped between her wet folds brushing against her clit. Choked pleasured filled moans left Okoye’s lips the moment he suckled onto her clit, those firm hands held onto her hips preventing her from squirming away.
Attuma couldn’t help whenever he gazed at Okoye every so often, wanting to store as many expressions of her beautiful face as he could. His own hips grounding against the bed every so often, trying to ignore the strains and throbbing of his cock. He swirled and sucked, keeping the pressure while he felt her try to lift her hips against his hot mouth. When she cried out, Attuma instantly dragged his tongue over her throbbing entrance. Humming at the taste of her essence, and the way her pussy throbbed from her climaxing. He pulled himself up, inserting a finger in slowly and another following suit. Attuma began to nip and suck on her inner thighs, he curled and slowly pumped his finger only inserting another after seeing her hips slowly press against his finger. It was intoxicating to feel Okoye squeeze and throb around his fingers, pumping his fingers at the pace of his tongue.
“A-Attuma!”
Attuma’s eyes flickered shut for a second, his free hand moving to grab his cock soothing some of his aches with careful strokes and squeezes. As much he wanted to wait, those soft whimpers of his name, the way her back arched off the bed as she coated his fingers when she came for the second time. He couldn’t wait anymore.
His voice was husky and strained for her, “Okoye, you must tell me if it's too much.” The warmth of Attuma’s hips was pressed against hers but he held himself up with one hand, entering her slowly searching her face for any discomfort. Okoye pushed her legs up higher on him, instantly locking them around his hips and pulling him closer to her. The slow thrusts of his hips were met with light squeezes from her legs, faint pleading mixed so deliciously with her groans. Burying his face in her neck when his pace began to increase. Her nails dug into his shoulders, her lips pressed against his jaw. The way her entrance squeezed him and between those wet sounds each time their hips met, the cries that came when she arched her back when she came for the third time. Attuma held her close even as he felt her grip on him loosen, his groans muffled by the sloppy kisses planted on Okoye’s shoulder. Light sucks and bite marks that would become faint maroon markings in the morning. His thrusts were becoming more desperate, edging himself closer to his own orgasm while she rode through hers. One of his large hands held her hips, holding her close to him when he finally came.
Attuma’s head was spinning slowly trying to catch his breath, his grip on the bed tightening trying to keep himself from falling onto Okoye. He placed his forehead to hers, lightly kissing her face which she barely registered with a whimper. He didn’t want to pull away from her but he had to move them into a more comfortable position. A light frown formed on her lips the moment Attuma pulled out, creating space between him while he carefully lowered her legs. Turning them over to where Attuma was on the bottom and Okoye was on top, he pulled a blanket over them wrapping an arm around her body.
“I am still here, my sweet,” he whispered gently, soothing the worry lines off her forehead. Attuma did not sleep until he saw she was settled against him, hearing her breathing slowly and deeply while she slept. There was a light sheen of sweat that still clung to them both, he still ran his hands down her frame lightly massaging her back. Seeing Okoye press her cheek against his chest made him shift only a second to press one kiss to her forehead. Attuma finally did fall asleep, still with Okoye held close to him.
A faint vibration was heard from Okoye’s bag during the night, and a faint blue light from her cellphone screen was partially concealed. Brief flashing of two contact names appeared on the screen before it went black.
Two missed calls from Shuri and One missed call from W’Kabi.

Chapter 5
Summary:
Tempted to just delete the missed call and just toss the phone on the bed. There was nothing he should be contacting her for, he had everything he needed, in fact she mentally kicked herself for not deleting his number from her phone. Listening to his voicemail, hearing his voice made her uneasy even though she knew that slurred hoarse tone. She knew that he had been crying and his first thing he thought was to call her while intoxicated.
“My hummingbird, please come back to me. I am sorry, I have not stopped drinking since you left me. S-she was just a fling and I want to make this work. We are approaching a year since the divorce was finalized and I-” Okoye's grip was tight on her phone while she paused the voicemail and deleted it quickly. She refused to hear the rest to get sucked into the sympathy that W’Kabi craved.

Chapter Text
Time went by too quickly that night in Attuma’s opinion, to him it felt as if he just closed his eyes. Glancing at the digital compact alarm clock on the lampstand beside the bed, the face of the clock glowed in the darkness. Four in the morning had arrived too quickly for his liking, he turned his gaze back to Okoye ignoring the red glow from the clock that looked like a glare. Even if he knew that he should start looking for his clothes, he couldn’t bring himself to get up just yet. Five more minutes he assured himself, perhaps even skipping coffee this morning.
Exhaustion will come for him but that was a fair trade to see how Okoye cuddled into him while she slept. It would be a great sin to leave her warmth and disturb her in the process. The five minutes he encouraged himself to have came by quickly, this time Attuma did shift some to get out of bed. Pressing a light kiss to her forehead, he pulled his arm up from around her carefully. Adjusting a pillow closer to her which Okoye grabbed instantly in her sleep. He pulled a blanket up close to her shoulders, smiling faintly at the sight of Okoye shifting to curl up in his previous spot.
Looking for his clothing in the dark took some time, their clothes were practically scattered across the bedroom floor. After a few minutes, he found his shorts and jeans to put back on, he didn’t bother trying to look for his shirt and instead made sure to get his jacket. He crept out of the house using her backdoor and turned the lock on the knob before stepping outside. What drowsiness he did have left him quickly, due to the biting cold. Most mornings were usually cold, part of the reason why Attuma often started wearing long sleeve shirts until he took them off later.
Fishing the key from his pocket, he quickly slipped back into his home turning on a few lights. His time was cut short to prepare for the morning, Attuma hurriedly took a shower and got dressed again to rush outside. Tangled hair was hastily wrapped into a ponytail, slipping on his worn leather gloves while walking to his barn. The horses were released out to the pasture first and the few cattle he had were checked on.
The hardest part was always getting to the livestock and collecting dairy products from the few chickens and cows he had. Unknowingly, Attuma set aside two dozen fresh eggs and two glass bottles of milk that were stored away. One set to keep for himself and another to give to Okoye later on. Attuma walked with determination and made haste towards each task, mentally going over each duty he needed to be done by today. He wanted to get back to her, to have her in his arms to feel her warmness again.
Even as the coldness of the night faded, and blue hues mixed with rust filled the morning sky, the warmth from the rising sun was not the same compared to her. Slamming the metal gate closed, double checking the locks Attuma eyed his three pigs who trotted into the fresh mud and feed pans. The goats were the last to be herded out to the pasture that morning, gently nudging Chia forward who was determined to stay by his legs. “Go on, now is not the time to play little one.” Giving a humorous look, he did give a light scratch to the baby’s goat back before closing the gate once it moved inside the gates.
Attuma spent the rest of the morning until noon checking the fencing, repairing and replacing any weak boards or old wiring on his barbed wire fence. There were only a few more tasks he needed to do after the repairs, a smile ghosted his lips at the thought of being done for the day. He began to wonder what type of flowers he could find for her this time to surprise her with.
Carrying the bundles of rotten boards and rusted wires nearby the barn to toss. The sound of a roaring engine from a car approaching made him slow his steps. Attuma squinted slightly from the glare of the sun and heat, though when the car didn’t continue to pass the ranch land but turned down his pathway. He didn’t recognize the car, quickening his step to toss the waste and meet this person who he hoped was just lost.
**
Okoye finally stirred, brushing a hand over the bed sheets as if expecting Attuma to be there with her. She sat up slightly in brief confusion but settled back into the pillow. Turning her face slightly into it, she inhaled his scent. The pillow still smelled faintly like him, even her blankets, she was tempted to go back to sleep until her gaze went to her clock. She had been asleep a few minutes past noon already, she pushed herself up completely and began to scramble out the bed. It was rare for her to even sleep in, always wanting to get up early to start her day. Her feet touched something soft instead of the tile floor. Okoye gave a surprised look, everything of Attuma’s was gone from last night but his shirt. She didn’t even hear him get dressed or leave last night. Picking up Attuma’s maroon shirt, brushing her fingers over the soft fabric she pulled it close to bury her face briefly into it. Loving the scent of cologne and him, she gushed at sudden memories of those full lips on her body. His heated breaths in her ear as he rutted into her over and over.
Okoye felt her heart quicken at the sudden realization of the combination of dampness and stickiness she felt between her thighs. A blind choice was made between them both last night. She placed the shirt aside and quickly moved to the washroom for a shower. And hope to Bast, that she possibly had a plan b in her medicine cabinets and condoms to use for next time. She bit the inside of her lip once realizing she was already thinking about next time. Surely something like this meant they would have to talk more about them. The light hum from her vibrating phone stopped her train of thought.
Searching the nightstand by her bag, she looked for her purse next which was placed on the top of her dresser. Pulling the phone out, she began to search through her notifications while heading to the bathroom. Though she did see Shuri’s name, her stomach dropped at the sight of W'Kabi’s number. Tempted to just delete the missed call and just toss the phone on the bed. There was nothing he should be contacting her for, he had everything he needed, in fact, she mentally kicked herself for not deleting his number from her phone. Listening to his voicemail, hearing his voice made her uneasy even though she knew that slurred hoarse tone. She knew that he had been crying and the first thing he thought was to call her while intoxicated.
Okoye still remembered when she met W’Kabi it was of course threw T’Challa at Wakanda Co. Sweet little talks that led to him giving his number to her so they could speak outside of work. Four years, four years that went by so quickly and seemingly wasted with one another. Their first year together had been well, though things started to quickly change among them once W’Kabi stepped away from Wakanda Co. She became more involved with work working with T’Challa and his family but W’Kabi became distant. By the third year, he was hardly home and Okoye used excuses to remain at work as much as she could. During their last year together, she had found him with another woman in their bed together. Neither heard Okoye come in, not until she slammed the door behind her did she see them scramble away from one another. Another year passed by just for the divorce to be completed. How dare he. Try to call her, “his” hummingbird after all this time and after everything that has happened. There was never any apology but that it was a mistake and the expectation of Okoye to forgive him. To allow her to manage this hurt and everything will be okay as time goes on. Her heart had hardened instead the moment she left W’Kabi, and now the touch of another has softened it.
Placing her phone down on the counter, she searched her medical cabinet for a white small box. Taking the small morning-after pill, Okoye moved to start a shower as hot as she could stand. Though she didn’t look in the mirror at herself, deep maroon markings covered her neck and shoulders.
For a moment her mind went blank once the scolding water hit her skin, shoulders tensing up slightly before relaxing some. Her hips and legs ached, but at least that was a welcoming faint pain. The smell of jasmine with a hint of shea butter filled the washroom and bedroom. She carefully lathered up her exfoliating cloth to scrub her frame. Okoye scrubbed herself fully and sighed as the soap was rinsed away, rubbing at the few spots that were sore. Shutting the water off, she pulled a gray fluffy towel off the rack nearby. Snatching up her phone, without giving another thought to W’Kabi she deleted his previous missed call before dialing Shuri’s number.
“Ah, I was getting concerned when you didn’t call me today. Are you okay, Ususi?”
Okoye offered a soft chuckle when Shuri didn’t even bother to say hello, “ I am well. I am surprised you are not here trying to pry my windows open from me not calling earlier.”
She heard Shuri make a light hmph sound,” If another hour or two would have passed I would have done so.”
“I just slept past my normal time today, that's all. Attuma helped me start my garden the other day and well we had dinner again.”
“You never sleep in. You must be coming down with a cold or something. Attuma, eh?” The concern in Shuri’s voice only increased when still heard the tiredness in Okoye’s voice.
Okoye merely snorted, grasping the towel to prevent it from slipping. “No, child. I am not but thank you truly for worrying about me. Just yesterday was a long day, that's all”. Propping the phone against her shoulder while walking into her closet in search of clean clothes to wear. Though the closet was small, Okoye occupied the space well with small clear shelves for her small accessories. Her clothes were all neatly hung and organized by color, and her shoes were neatly placed on the top shelf above the racks all organized by their color and styles. A black framed square body-size mirror hung on the inside of the closet door. Pulling a pair of black spandex crop pants with a blue top to try on, she placed the phone down on a nearby shelf to dress. Examining herself in the mirror, she changed out of the clothing and pulled out an off-shoulder top yellow top with a matching skirt that had a high split on the right side.
Reaching for the phone her hand stilled, seeing W’Kabi’s number flash over the phone as a second call briefly before disappearing again. Okoye knew the next step to do if W’Kabi continued to call her phone, she would block his number altogether.
“And how is the cowboy over there? Is he treating you well why he serenades you with Ndithande songs?”
“Do not tease him, Shuri.” Though Okoye did laugh picking up the phone, grabbing and slipping on a pair of white thin strapped sandals.
“By Bast, I knew it! I made the right choice by not wanting to be the third wheel among you two!” This time it was Shuri's turn to laugh when hearing the light scoff and stammer that followed from Okoye. Of course, she pressed more because it wasn’t often that Okoye was stunned into silence. “You all but batted your eyes at him and you could ask that man to move rocks for you all day and with a smitten look, he would only ask how far do you want them, my heart?”
“Shuri, enough. He is very sweet but I do not recall anything you are mentioning right now” Okoye hummed back a flashing grin while walking into her living room.
“I will take a photo of you both to document my proof!” Shuri teased more and Okoye rolled her eyes in response.
Two loud voices carried all the way to Okoye’s home, though their words were muffled she could still hear them while standing just in the living room.
“Hey Ususi, would you be interested in having lunch this coming weekend? I can bring the ingredients!” Shuri being met with silence made her look at her phone to make sure the call didn’t get disconnected.
Ususi? Shuri repeated.
“Hold on Shuri-” Okoye started quickly, moving to a nearby window on the side of her house that gave her a view of Attuma’s property. She assumed Attuma was yelling to keep the attention of his livestock at first. Or maybe he had some sort of company but the more she strained to listen it sounded like an argument. Peeking through the window, Okoye saw Attuma standing in front of his property yelling at another. A man shorter than Attuma's height trying his damndest to be in Attuma’s face yelling back. The blue cloak draped over the man’s shoulders was a giveaway, the black Mercedes that was parked croaked in Attuma’s turnaround driveway in front of his ranch.
Without another word Okoye bolted out of the house through the backdoor. Okoye didn’t answer Shuri back who’s voice she could still hear yelling out to her asking what was going on.
“This will be the last time I will tell you before I make you. Get off my property!”
“I know she’s here and you will not keep me from my hummingbird-!” W’Kabi sneered back and pushed Attuma out of his space. Attuma closed the distance, his large fist connecting with W'Kabi's nose with a loud crack. W’Kabi fell flat on his ass with a thud grimacing from his broken nose.
“Attuma-!”
Okoye’s phone slipped from her grasp when pulling Attuma away from W’Kabi, “Stop, that's enough!“ Attuma all but growled his gaze, never leaving W’Kabi waiting to see if the other would get to his feet.
“He came here looking for you and I didn’t tell him because I have never seen this man before and for all, I know he could have held ill intentions. This man is fucking drunk.” Attuma frowned, not hiding the disgust on his face. She grasped his arm, Attuma only slightly relaxing in her touch.
“That is W’Kabi, my ex-husband.”
“Not by my choice.” W’Kabi groaned, shifting to push himself to his feet but only moved to lean against his car and pointed at Okoye. “You never tried, you just left me! You don’t even answer my calls and now I see why! ”
Attuma nudged Okoye behind him,” Do not listen to the drunk ramblings of this man.” Using his bulky frame to mostly block her from W’Kabi’s sight. The heat of anger that shot up her back, made her push past Attuma to the point she was pressing an accusing finger into W’Kabi’s chest.
“You cheated on me and had the gall to think I was supposed to be the shoulder you weep on for your wrongdoings! “ Okoye snapped, even as W’Kabi jolted from her tone not used to hearing Okoye raise her voice to him. “I’ve been done for years and you are just now seeing it. Bast, you have always cared about yourself and your feelings only, why I am not surprised about this.”
Attuma silently pulled Okoye by her forearm gently back to his side, still not trusting W’Kabi during the outburst.
W’Kabi brushed the blood away from his nose and mouth with his palm before straightening his coat, “And so, you have this man who is your boyfriend now I see. It is all over your neck.”
“Yes I am.” Attuma bellowed the gentle looks that he normally had and his tone was now replaced with irritation.
“ My girlfriend doesn’t have to explain a fucking thing to you. What we do in our time is our own gotdamn business! ” Attuma snarled back though this stunned Okoye into silence.
A luxurious SUV with all-black tinted windows sped down the road, only to slow up and turn into the driveway of Attuma’s property. Shuri flew out of the passenger side of the SUV, just as Namor parked it behind W’Kabi’s Mercedes.
“You need to go and I will find out just how you got my sister's address. Just by your damn face of yours, you had just enough of a warning. Go!” Shuri pointed at W’Kabi before gesturing to the car. Namor came around from the driver’s side with a light frown, eyeing W’Kabi then his cousin who only glanced at him back before focusing his gaze on W’Kabi.
“Ma'alobech?” Namor called out to Attuma who in return just nodded. (Are you okay?)
W’Kabi parted his lips to protest, but it wasn’t just Okoye’s boyfriend now he had to deal with now. But now it was Shuri and another man standing beside her. Slinking away from the car, he moved over to the driver’s side. Without another word, W’Kabi got in and sped out of the driveway barely missing the edge of Attuma’s entry gates before turning back into the direction of town.
“Patético '' Attuma sighed, his grasp losing on her arm though he did pull her close to his side. (Pathetic.)
“I’m sorry, Okoye.” he offered quietly but before Okoye could question why he was apologizing Shuri came close to the two.
“I- well... We had to come once hearing your voice and Attuma’s voice began yelling.” Shuri admitted with a light sigh of her own while glancing at Namor.
Both were dressed in ruffled clothing as if they both got dressed in a hurry to get to Attuma's ranch.
Shuri fashioned in white shorts with a baggy dark green hoodie with golden stripes on the shoulders. Namor wore a black shirt with jeans, though his curls usually seemed slick back were now unruly.
Attuma said nothing about Shuri wearing an old jacket that belonged to Namor.
“Are you both okay?” Shuri questioned while Namor reached down to pick up Okoye’s phone off the ground.
The two nodded, though the stress lingered on Okoye’s face the longer she stood there. Attuma gently turned her around and guided her up the steps to his home, “Let’s go inside, it's hot and maybe something to drink can help cool everybody down.” The house was bright due to the curtains drawn back, but the AC remained on to combat the heat from outside.
Okoye sat in a lounge chair in the living room, Shuri beelining to sit next to her to make sure she was okay. Attuma and Namor lingered in the kitchen, looking for clean glasses in the cabinets for everyone.
“Care to explain about that?” Namor questioned low enough for Attuma to hear, leaning back against the counter.
Attuma frowned at the mention of W’Kabi but pulled a few ice trays out of the freezer, “I had just finished repairing a few weak spots around the perimeter of the property. And this fucking idiot comes down the street and turns into my driveway. Stumbling out of the car, demanding to know where Okoye was and why I was here at Okoye’s home.” His gaze lowered to the ice tray, tilting the sides carefully to shake loose the ice cubes.
“He fucking reeked of alcohol and by the time Okoye came out we have already been arguing for about five or ten minutes. I refused to tell him anything and it just escalated from there. I am sure that punch to his face sobered him up greatly.” Attuma muttered but shrugged his shoulders and shook the cubes into the empty glasses.
Namor shook his head as well, “I was with Shuri and she panicked because she heard Okoye's voice muffled, and when she did put the call on speaker. We both heard your voice and W’Kabi’s too. So we came here and I am thankful we did. There is no telling if he would have still tried to be here.”
“That wouldn’t have happened.” Attuma said firmly, holding a light glare at the thought of W’Kabi still persisting to bother them both.
Namor patted Attuma’s shoulder in response knowing how serious his cousin could be, and silently he was truly thankful for speeding there. Seeing W’Kabi’s broken nose, things could have been a lot worst.
Notes:
Edit: Turns out there is overwhelming number of people who either found this or read it. So I'll resume continuing it to 10 chapters. Thanks for the feedback and convincing me to continuing to write my all time favorite story.
W'Kabi was bound to show his face I suppose but got off lucky with Attuma because if Okoye had stopped him. I'm sure things would of been worst.
