Dead Asleep (Dreaming Away Your Life)

Summary:

Few performers have been as relentlessly controversial as rock ‘n’ roll’s most notorious bad boy, Eddie Munson. Spending the majority of his life raising hell, abusing drugs, having sex, and defying death, Corroded Coffin’s complex frotman quickly achieved cult status after his rise to stardom in the late 1980s.

Steve Harrington, a top-earning model and a gold standard of modern beauty, was discovered at the age of fourteen and has since appeared on the covers of every major magazine in the world, gracing runways and red carpets as a forever fashion icon. He’s had a whirlwind career, plenty of drug problems, and dated men twice his age.

Unlikely pair with complicated history.

Will they tell all about it to Nancy Wheeler?

PLEASE READ THE TAGS AND NOTES FOR CONTENT WARNINGS!!! VERY IMPORTANT!!!

Notes:

TW: This work contains descriptions of (past) sexual abuse involving minors, character death, improper use of position and power, drug addiction, questionable age difference, unhealthy relationships, and explicit sexual content.

although nothing sexual happens between Eddie and Steve while the latter is underaged, he has still only recently reached the age of consent and has been in inappropriate relationships before Eddie, so this can very much feel fucky to some.

everything Eddie and Steve do together is consensual and legal and reciprocal!! They don’t meet before Steve’s 18 and the age gap is barely 7 years. That’s why I’m not rating this underage.

still, age is an essential part of the plot and what makes Eddie and Steve’s relationship even more unhealthy.

and there are OTHER characters who are downright sickos and don’t care about the age of consent or consent at all… just putting it out there, even though those offenses are not written in detail.

IF ANY OF THIS MAKES YOU UNCOMFORTABLE PLEASE DO NOT READ. thaaaank yooouu!!

and I will of course always put the chapter specific warnings on the notes. keep an eye on them!

About the Author

Nancy Wheeler is an American investigative journalist, feminist activist, and author. She is best known for her column in Printed magazine, for which she has written numerous shocking exposés about the entertainment industry and its elite.

The content of her column is a blend of hilarious stories, important issues, and ‘scoop’ interviews. In her writings she expresses clear opposition to prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination, and shows insistent support to many social justice movements.

Wheeler has always given equal if not more weight to people mistreated by the media and ostracized by the industry, offering her interviewees a chance to come forward with (often rotten and dark) revelations that some might consider taboo. No stone is left unturned when she investigates someone: if any one of them has so much as even a parking ticket, Wheeler will find out about it.

Having her work been criticized for her ‘probing’ questions, insensitivity, and gratuitously graphic descriptions of abuse of power and money, she’s been a somewhat controversial figure. “Wheeler is a tenacious overachiever with manipulative tendencies,” writes psychotherapist Jason Carver for Couch.

Nancy Wheeler is also known as the author of Eddie Munson:Dionysus—a bestselling biographical fiction novel that presents a fictionalized take on the life of Corroded Coffin’s frontman and lead guitarist. It follows Munson through the early years of his life, his rise to stardom with his band, and then the troubling highs and lows of his international fame.

The novel has faced some backlash from fans and critics alike for masquerading as a biography when it's more of a loose retelling with historical inaccuracies. “She definitely had her own ideas about what happened in various situations,” said Corroded Coffin’s drummer Gareth Emerson in response to the book.

Wheeler herself insists that the novel is a work of fiction that should not be regarded as anything else. “I’m not a biographer. Yet.” She has since commented.

Yet indeed.

About the Book

Eddie Munson and Steve Harrington’s passionate ill-fated romance is undeniably one of the first things that comes to mind when reminiscing about the 90s.

Rock star known for his sexy vampiric appearance, questionable sense of humor, and grossly improper lyric themes, together with famously private supermodel, face of minimalist seductiveness, a chic androgyne—talk about a sensational duo!

The Callahan photoshoot that is still seen as one of the most iconic fashion ads of all time, songs that include filthy vocals that can’t exactly be called singing, and extravagant Italian wedding that shunned many traditions are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to their legendary moments together.

Back when the term ‘power couple’ was yet to be coined, the young lovers dated on and off from 1994 until they called it quits in 1996 after three months of marriage. During their time together (and after) their deeply dysfunctional relationship was highly publicized across news outlets, and on more than one occasion Munson even pleaded with the paparazzi to leave Harrington alone.

From the string of tragedies and struggles to the photographs that shocked the globe and set the media ablaze, the celebrity pair share a complicated history that still hasn’t been addressed. For the last two decades, Munson and Harrington have both taken a step back from the limelight, staying far away from the press, refusing to divulge.

That is until now.

The faces that’ll inevitably go down in history are finally ready to comment on their obscure and long-speculated past together.

With exclusive permission, Nancy Wheeler has interviewed both Munson and Harrington, as well as family, friends, and others who have any expertise in the lives of the boys. These interviews work as the primary source for the book.

However, it should also be noted that this isn’t a typical journey in a straight line from day one to the present but rather an attempt to track down what went down between them.

This is a book based on adventures, dreams, heartbreak, and lessons.

A love letter to what would’ve, could’ve, and should’ve.

This is for Eddie and Steve.
