take me away, sunray

Summary:

"D'you think we might've broken like a Guinness World Record or somethin'?"

The sun is scorching, burning Jamie's shoulders through his shirt as they walk down the cobblestone path. Dani only seems to find the heat comforting, stubbornly holding onto Jamie's hand even though their palms are all sweaty now.

"A world record? For what?"

Jamie lowers his sunglasses a little, smirking. "Most bathrooms defiled."

Work Text:

The slices of cheese on the plate don't look real.

It's cheese, in theory, but there are skins on some of them that has Jamie thinking twice. Half of them aren't even yellow. One of them's dotted with black stuff that he'd been assured was definitely not mould, but Jamie's not about to risk food poisoning on his holiday just because the server thinks he knows what is and isn't mould.

Dani hasn't gone near the cheeses either, but that's only because he's basically laid claim to the fresh fruit. He pops another grape in his mouth while Jamie nibbles on his crackers.

"Is there a point to eating grapes when we're drinkin' wine?" Jamie asks, thumbing off some of the crumbs caught at the edge of his mouth.

Dani shrugs, the arm that's resting on the back of Jamie's chair brushing against the back of Jamie's shirt as he does so. "I like grapes! Here, you try one," he presses one up against Jamie's lips, keeping it there until Jamie opens his mouth. Jamie makes sure to nip at Dani's thumb, just for the sake of it.

"Yeah, alright, these're pretty good," Jamie admits, picking up a strawberry next.

The strawberry's sweet too, and sort of unnaturally, suspiciously red, but before he can say anything about it, Dani leans in and slots his mouth over Jamie's. Jamie's not too surprised to kiss back, though the way Dani's tongue swipes over his lips is unexpected.

Dani pulls back grinning, apparently uncaring of the fact that they're surrounded by tables filled with other people. "The strawberries are good, too."

Going anywhere with Dani is impossible, Jamie had almost forgotten.

Before Jamie can even attempt to retaliate, the sommelier comes around to give them another type of white wine that's different but in the same 'family' as the last one they'd had. Jamie's tempted to down the whole thing in one go, just to watch the sommelier wince, but carefully sips at it instead as if he can taste the hints of honey or daisies or whatever the fuck else is in the wine.

(By this point he thinks if someone just pissed in a glass and handed it to him, he wouldn't be able to tell the difference.)

He can tell Dani's getting a little bored too, with the way he keeps shifting in his seat every few seconds.

"Why'd we sign up for this again?"

Dani hums. "Because it is romantic?" He doesn't sound very sure. "The website said it would be perfect for couples."

The website isn't wrong, exactly. The older couples surrounding them certainly look like they're having a good time, feeding each other fancy cheese and clinking their wine glasses against each other's. Dani and Jamie just aren't winery people, apparently.

Jamie leans into Dani a little more, wondering vaguely if one day they'll end up on one of those other tables instead. "Goin' to the loo. Join me?"

He gets up before Dani answers, but it's not really a question that needs answering anyway. Dani catches up to Jamie once they're away from the open area, linking their hands so that Jamie can pull him through the door and into the bathroom.

Jamie makes sure to lock the door behind them.

"Most bathrooms defiled. Think we must be in the hundreds by now, surely we've earned some kind of prize."

Dani laughs. Jamie doesn't think the numbers are wrong, though. They've done a lot in bathrooms, public and private. Colin still hasn't really forgiven him for one particular instance when they'd been a little tipsy and decided to fool around in his en suite. He'd forgiven Dani easily enough, but still liked to hold it over Jamie's head sometimes, which was entirely unfair. If Jamie had left it up to Dani, they would've defiled Colin's bedroom instead. So if anything, Colin should be thanking Jamie.

"I don't think that's an official record, mi amor."

"Should be."

"You would want this? To be known as the man who has defiled the most bathrooms in the world?"

"One of two men. 'S a team effort, yeah? And I'd wear that title proudly."

Dani lifts their joined hands so that he can kiss the back of Jamie's, smiling all the while. He's wearing that 'you're ridiculous, but maybe I am also ridiculous for loving that about you' expression on his face. Jamie's been told he's got his own version of it that always comes out whenever Dani gets overenthusiastic about petting a stranger's dog on the street, or when he gets stuck holding the door open for an unending stream of people.

"Okay, maybe when we go home we can call the Guinness people, check to see if they can make a new record for us."

For that, Jamie decides to reward Dani by quickly pulling him into a small alleyway and kissing him just where he likes, in that small spot right behind his ear. Jamie likes to call it Dani's weak spot, what with the way his legs get all wobbly the second Jamie brushes his lips over the skin there. It always pleases Jamie to no end to know that none of Dani's previous partners had discovered it, that Jamie's the one who got to it first (and if he has anything to say about it, the last to as well).

"It's unfair," Dani murmurs, pleasantly breathless in a way that has Jamie thinking he might want to break some records defiling alleyways too. "You have no weak spots."

Jamie pulls back a little, smiling in that dopey way he knows spells out exactly what he feels and how much he feels for Dani. "'S cos I'm all weak spots when it comes to you, Rojas."

The corners of Dani's eyes crinkle when he laughs. He dips his head forward for a second to kiss Jamie proper, before pulling them both out of the dark and back into the sunshine.

They're holding hands again, strolling down the beach, their shoes abandoned (and probably stolen by now) somewhere behind them.

Santorini's been nice to them so far. Lots of sun, beautiful views, and delicious gelato. Jamie only hopes he'll remember all this.

Last time, when they'd went to Paris, other than the dinner they had in the Eiffel Tower, Jamie'd forgotten everything he'd seen. What he can remember to this day is still just... Dani. His face when they were sat up in that rusty old tower, overlooking the Paris streets. His face afterwards, when they were back in their hotel room, tipsy on the nice champagne the hotel had provided, and he'd said I love you for the second time.

(When Richard asked them about it later he looked torn between celebrating the romance of it all and mourning the fact that neither of them had taken in the city's sights.)

There's something about how blue the sky is here though, that Jamie thinks he'd never be able to forget even if he tried. Sometimes it doesn't look real, like somehow someone's slapped an instagram filter over everything.

A wave comes up to shore, water lapping over their feet. Jamie feels like he's walked into a dream.

"What are you thinking about, Jamie?" Dani swings their joined hands between them, smile soft, eyes bright.

This moment here with him somehow feels too real and not at all at the same time. It happens sometimes, when Jamie gets a little too happy, suddenly getting the sense that it's all too good to be true. Then he gets scared of blinking, like he might open his eyes and it'll all just be gone.

Nowadays there's less of that. Most of it's due to Jamie settling a little more with himself (a lot of it is the therapy). Some of it is just Dani himself, always there and ready to kiss Jamie out of a stupor.

Jamie exhales, focusses on the feeling of Dani's palm against his. "Just wonderin' where we'll be this time next year. Mum went to Bali with Simon, said it was nice. We could go there next, what d'ya think?"

Dani hums, more for the sake of pause rather than to convey that he's thinking. "I think Bali would be nice." He flashes a grin, a little playful, but mostly just full of love. "And I also think it doesn't really matter. We could stay in England, in Richmond, or go to Manchester, and it would all be the same. As long as we are together, it's perfect."

Definitely not a dream then. Dani only ever says something this sappy in real life. Jamie's imagination has never been able to accurately recreate just how saccharine Dani's words can be.

Jamie steps in front of Dani so that he can knock their foreheads together.

He decides he doesn't mind places that have too much sun, actually.
