Chapter Text
Oikawa is currently settled at a table between Iwaizumi and Atsumu inside a hotel ballroom for Hinata’s wedding reception banquet when Kageyama appears out of nowhere as annoyingly handsome as ever in his three-piece suit and proceeds to ruin his day. It might sound like an exaggeration but really, Oikawa thinks this is truly the point where his life is about to significantly change, for better or worse, only time will tell.
Kageyama is wearing the expression he always has on his face when he’s overthinking about something, the one with furrowed eyebrows and adorable ugly scowl although this time there’s a hint of blush coloring his cheeks when he opens his mouth to say, "Atsumu-san, Natsu told me the best man needs to lead the first dance before the groom does……. Kei and Tadashi have other stuffs to do…can you help me…err..I mean do you want to be my dance partner?”.
There’s a collective silence over the table when Kageyama manages to stutter all the words out, like he was still the same “Tobio-chan” Oikawa knew from back then, who's outrageously bad at speaking coherently.
Oikawa tries to share an incredulous glance with Iwaizumi but the latter only has an amused expression on his face instead. So, he turns to his right to see Atsumu’s reaction and the blonde breaks out into a shit-eating grin. This quirk of him usually infuriates Oikawa, but especially now when it’s not on the court and hearing what comes out of his mouth after.
“Thought ya say it’s a one-time thing back then, baby. I’m honored”, Atsumu answers with a naughty glint in his eyes and suddenly something like annoyance spikes in Oikawa’s chest. He hears the rumor before about their possible hook up after Kageyama came out as gay one year ago (Atsumu has always been openly bisexual since he first debuted as professional volleyball player) but to see the two of them blatantly “flirting” in front of him when Kageyama hasn’t started a conversation with Oikawa outside a match in probably years is definitely in Oikawa's opinion a very ill-mannered behavior.
“Just one dance, please? They wouldn’t leave me alone”, Kageyama groans while his eyes briefly turn towards a group of girls who are giggling and pointing fingers at their table direction.
It doesn’t come as a surprise to see Kageyama is still popular among the opposite sex even after telling the world he’s gay. If anything, it just gives his fan girls more materials to fantasize and daydreaming about.
Oikawa is itching to interrupt the conversation and makes the younger setter at least acknowledges his presence on the table but then Kageyama speaks up again, "I can suck your dick later as reward”. He throws the words as casually as possible like he’s asking Atsumu to practice volleyball together after the event ends.
Atsumu's grin widen. He stands up and excuses himself before whisking Kageyama's away for a quick reward deposit before the dance starts. Oikawa begrudgingly watches until their silhouette disappear among the crowds and doesn’t even realize he's stabbing the steak on his plate with fork repeatedly enough for Iwaizumi to start hitting his back.
"Stop doing that! You are attracting attention. If it bothers you so much, why don’t you volunteer and ask Kageyama for a dance yourself", Iwaizumi suggests jokingly.
Oikawa rolls his eyes and puts down his fork. Suddenly, he doesn’t feel like eating the fancy servings anymore.
"Don't you think it's very rude and impolite of Tobio-chan to not even greet us then proceeds to openly talking about giving someone blow jobs in front of his seniors?", Oikawa mutters the complaints under his breathe, careful not to let anyone else into their conversations.
As one of the top players in the volleyball world right now, there are lots of big names and even medias in attendance to celebrate Hinata's wedding. It also means this will be the most effective place for rumors and gossips to spread around.
That's why Oikawa doesn’t understand how Kageyama and Atsumu can just say that kind of dirty stuffs openly when they know people are hungry for any kind of scandal involving public figures to break out so the internet can put them under scrutiny. Granted that Kageyama is Japan's darling but still, even his "honest & good boy" reputation has been a bit tarnished now that some people go as far as associating his coming out as controversial sex scandal.
Iwaizumi just blinks at his complaints and lets out a short hum. Oikawa hates when his best friend does that because it always means Iwaizumi knows something and is deliberately holding off information from him.
"You'll be surprised to hear the things Kageyama has said or done in the locker room. Honestly, I always thought Atsumu is rubbing off on him but Kageyama is actually the insatiable one", Iwaizumi says as matter of fact.
"Gross, Iwa-chan! I don't need to hear that", Oikawa reacts dramatically, still keeping his voice low until he sees the goading amusement on Iwaizumi's face, then he gasps in disbelief.
"What the fuck? Please don't tell me you did with Tobio too?".
"Iwa-chan? Are you crazy?", Oikawa stammers, almost forgetting where he is currently although thankfully his small outburst coincides with the sound of loud music playing in the background. It seems like the ballroom dance is about to begin.
Iwaizumi wipes his mouth with the folded napkin on his lap then takes a sip of his champagne after. He swirls the glass in his hand and mutters slowly, annoyingly, "Why don’t you try to play nice with Kageyama too and find out by yourself?”.
“You are drunk, Iwa-chan”.
“Aw, it’s cute how you are sulking now because Kageyama ignores you. How does it feel to taste your own medicine?”, Iwaizumi snickers and pats Oikawa's head like he’s a child who needs comfort when his toy is taken away from him.
Oikawa shrugs and glances up into the crowd, where Kageyama is being rotated around the floor by Atsumu. The other guests are cheering happily and he sees photographers including media representatives snapping multiple shots of the two of them which he knows will gain thousands of traction once they are being uploaded in social media.
He wonders how all of these people will react if he suddenly swoops in, steals Kageyama from Atsumu’s embrace to dance with him.
Will Hinata be angry if Oikawa's little stunt manage to steal his headline for the sports wedding of the year?
Just for a joke, of course.
Anyway, Oikawa doesn’t do any of that.
Not even dancing with other people even though there are quite a number of beautiful women offering themselves.
Oikawa lets them down gently with a charming smile and excuses himself by mingling with the other guests, going from one acquaintance to another to keep himself occupied until he catches the sight of a lone figure hovering near the impressive wedding cake, a special gift from the famous Chocolatier from Paris, Tendo Satori to the lovebirds.
He will recognize the back of the round head anywhere. It’s Kageyama Tobio, who is watching Hinata and his bride spinning on the ballroom floor with an almost endearing smile on his face.
The expression looks good on him but still strange. Again, Oikawa doesn’t recognize this Kageyama and he can’t resist the urge to poke it and call his bluff.
He makes his way towards the younger setter among the crowds, hoping that no one can interrupt them now. Not Atsumu or any of the girls.
Once Oikawa manages to slide and stand beside Kageyama, he says, "Do you ever get tired of pretending that you are okay when your heart is breaking into pieces watching them?”.
Kageyama turns and stares at him. He’s back to his default face, a mix of polite and obnoxious expressions.
“Oikawa-san…. .uh, I’m not sure I know what you mean”.
“I’m just saying, you are acting like a good friend, being Shouyo’s best man and all… making sure his wedding goes smoothly, even giving free favor to that Miya guy, is that your way of trying to get over your feelings now that Shouyo is a taken man? That’s so pretentious even for your standard, Tobio-chan”, Oikawa goads, resting an overly friendly elbow on Kageyama’s shoulder which unfortunately makes him painfully aware of the extra inches of height the younger has on him now.
He internally curses himself for abandoning the shoe lifts this morning.
Oikawa can feel Kageyama’s body stiffens beside him before it shakes a bit when he lets out the most outlandish hoot of laughter Oikawa ever heard from him. Not that he ever hears Kageyama laughs before.
“I never know you have a hobby of writing fanfiction, Oikawa-san”, Kageyama replies sarcastically although his eyes are still fixated on the couple and not on Oikawa. “Perhaps, you should consider uploading it into a website, there are lots of fans who will love it. I must say the plot is a bit too overdone though”.
Oikawa can feel his mouth twitching in annoyance because not just Kageyama manages to talk back to him without grimacing but the man is even talking about fan fictions. He did read the interview where Kageyama said he’s very much aware of his reputation as the hot setter and how he doesn’t mind if it becomes getaway for new fans to discover volleyball..... But this is definitely going overboard.
Oikawa can’t stop his curious self from running his mouth off.
“Wait— what, Tobio-chan? Did you read fanfiction of yourself?”.
“It’s nice to see you too, Oikawa-san”, Kageyama mutters, clenching his jaw and starts to walk away from him.
It aggravates Oikawa that fucking Tobio-chan thinks he can get rid and ignore Oikawa’s existence as easily like that, so without thinking, his hand reaches out and pulls Kageyama’s shoulder’s back.
The action causes Kageyama to turn and suddenly, they are so close with each other that for a brief of moment, all Oikawa can see is the deep blue of Kageyama’s clear eyes before he loses balance of himself and is now tripping on his own foot when Kageyama pushes his chest too hard to put some distances between them.
The next thing Oikawa knows, he is stumbling backward and quickly grabs Kageyama’s arms for support so he wouldn’t fall down on the floor.
Unfortunately, all it does is throwing the two of them off- balance and he hears Kageyama shouting something about cake before they knock the nearest table behind them and the strong momentum sends them rolling onto the floor.
Oikawa only notices that the table is the one holding the massive wedding cake when it’s already too late.
Kageyama, however, scrambles to get up on his knees and attempts something to stop the inevitable doom as Oikawa watches in horror when the cake finally comes crashing down onto the expensive hotel’s carpet. Some of the pieces rain down on Kageyama and the setter is now half-covered with frosting and whipped cream.
It’s definitely a sight that stirs something inside of Oikawa, which he will remember for the rest of his life and for a second there, all he can think is that at least Kageyama’s dance with Atsumu won’t be the biggest scandal to come out from this day.
His next thought is to laugh humorously at the stupidity of this all because honestly this kind of takes him back to his childhood day when Iwaizumi and him were fighting over food on the floor until he can see the flash from multiple cameras going off at the same time out of the corner of his eyes.
Only then, the reality finally dawns on him and Oikawa mutters slowly, "Fuck!”.
