Chapter Text
Nobody ever said that a long distance relationship would be easy.
When Sunny moved away, he moved to the city, which was a two-hour long drive on a good day. On the rainy or more traffic-filled days, it was closer to three or four...and on the snowy or unbearably hot days, the drives tended to not happen at all.
It also was difficult because of the lack of physical contact and the fact that communication was limited to calls or really bad graphics due to a bad laptop or phone camera. It was difficult because a large amount of trust and good communication was vital for such a relationship to thrive.
Nevertheless, Sunny and Kel were willing to try.
Kel came to visit when possible, and Sunny would do the same. They texted each other often (well, Kel texted Sunny more than the reverse, but Sunny tried by sending little <3's to Kel every few hours), and they made it a point to call at least once every week, though it's become more of a ritual to do so every day.
It was working well for them.
The two of them were on a call one night, and it was practically sweltering. The air conditioning at Sunny's house had broke down, and now Sunny was lying on his floor, trying to ignore the gross sticky feeling all over his body. He always had a short fuse, but it seemed to get worse as it got hotter. The smallest inconvenience would set him off, and he was on high alert to make sure that he wouldn't snap at Kel.
"...So I make a pass, right? And this guy is clearly new to the game, which makes me feel kinda bad for not going easy on him."
Sunny blinks, trying to focus on the conversation at hand. Kel was recounting the game he had played as part of a basketball day camp he signed up for, and somehow Sunny had managed to zone out.
"So I...um..." Kel's voice trailed off, and it fell silent for a moment. After a few minutes, Kel spoke. "So, Sunny...what's new with you?"
Sunny instantly felt a spark of annoyance in his gut as he remembered his current situation. The pool of sweat under him was not helping his case at all...
"A/C broke," Sunny finally muttered.
"Yikes," Kel replied sympathetically. "And how long will that take to fix?"
"The guys won't be out here until the day after tomorrow." Sunny stared at the ceiling, struggling not to let his thoughts of envy towards Kel's air-conditioned house plague his mind.
"Oh...well, hey! Maybe you can come out to my house tomorrow and spend the night!" Kel suggested excitedly. "I mean, I will be gone until around four in the afternoon, but—"
"I don't have the money for a bus ticket," Sunny snapped. "Not everyone has a well-off family like you, Kel."
"I...geez. O-Okay." Kel sounded surprised, but he bounced back quickly as usual. "Well, I could pay for it and come out there if you'd like."
"Then we'd both be miserable."
"Hm...maybe, but I'd get to see my boyfriend shirtless, right?"
Sunny felt his face warm from more than the hot July air from that statement. When he heard Kel's laughter, indicating that the remark was meant to be a joke, Sunny let out a breath of relief.
"Okay, but seriously." Kel sounded happy. "I'm willing to come visit you and treat you out to something, if you'd like."
"Nah."
"Seriously, Sunny. I'm completely willing to!"
Sunny felt his annoyance come back. "No."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes! God, Kel! Stop pushing! I don't need you to waste your money on me!"
It's quiet. Then, Kel cleared his throat. "Okay, okay...but spending my money on you isn't a waste, you know."
"Yes, it is."
"No, it's not."
"Yes, it is." Sunny gritted his teeth. "I don't deserve it."
"Of course you do!"
Sunny balled his free hand into a fist as he gripped the phone tighter. "Kel. Shut up. I don't. You're not wasting your money on me."
"It's not a—"
"YES, IT IS!" Sunny yelled. "JUST DROP IT, KEL!"
Silence.
Suddenly, the call ended.
Sunny pulled the phone away from his ear, his eye wide with shock.
Oh.
Kel hung up on him.
Insecurity and fear gripped Sunny's heart like how King Crawler gripped onto an innocent Lost Sprout Mole in Headspace. He felt like he did when those Something's would surround him and threaten to never let him go.
Kel hates me. We haven't even been dating.six months, and he hates me.
Sunny's eyes stung, and he felt his breaths come in sharp and quick.
Oh God oh God oh God...
...
Kel didn't call back.
Sunny had a fitful sleep that night.
When Sunny woke up, he found that his throat was parched.
Sun beamed through his window and sunk into his pale skin, making him feel as though he was being cooked alive. The curtains for his room weren't given to him yet.
It was quiet, save for the sounds of the restless city outside. Sunny sat up, and he grimaced when his skin stuck to the floor.
That A/C better get fixed soon...
The...A/C...
The memories of what happened last night came flooding back.
Sunny had let his insecurity take over, and he had yelled at his boyfriend. Kel hung up, and...
...Was Kel even Sunny's boyfriend anymore?
Sunny wouldn't blame Kel if they were through. Sunny didn't deserve someone so handsome and kind...
There was pounding on the door downstairs.
Sunny forced himself to his feet and stumbled downstairs to the kitchen, letting the one who was knocking insistently continue to do so.
Water is more important than socializing.
Sunny gulped down a glass of water from the refrigerator and trudged back into the living room. He went over to the door and flung ig open, not caring about anything but—
KEL!?
Kel.
...Oh, wow. It's Kel.
The tall, tan boy was leaning against the doorframe, his basketball jersey soaked. He was breathing heavily, like he'd just ran a long ways (and, knowing him, he did), and his hair was stuck to his cheeks and chin. His eyes were wide, and he swallowed.
"Sunny."
Sunny jumped at the sound of his name, and he immediately felt self-conscious. Due to the sweltering heat, he had been shirtless...
Oh, dear God.
He was shirtless in front of his boyfriend.
Sunny covered his chest with his arms and stared at Kel, trying to ignore his fear. He had yelled at Kel, and now he's shirtless in front of him, and he...
...Kel was definitely going to break up with him.
"Sorry I didn't call you back or text you," Kel said. "My phone died, and then Hector somehow nudged it off my bed, and...well, um...I need a new phone."
Sunny tensed a little.
"I, um, I'm glad you answered the door. To be honest, I thought you were ignoring me." Kel gave Sunny a small smile.
'I thought you were ignoring me,' Sunny signed awkwardly.
"What? Sunny, I would never purposefully ignore you!"
'But I yelled at you.'
"So? Aubrey yells at me all the time. Did you—?"
Kel cut himself off, and he gasped with wide eyes. "Oh. Oh, Sunny...did you think I was going to break up with you because of a disagreement?"
Sunny gulped and crossed his arms again in a defensive hug. "...I would deserve it."
"Oh, mi sol..." Kel pulled Sunny into a tight hug. "You wouldn't deserve that, you hear me? You deserve the world, and...I know you're scared to let people in, and I know you've lost a lot of people in your life. But..."
Kel cupped Sunny's cheek and tilted his chin up with his thumb to make him look at him.
"You better get used to seeing me. I won't leave you behind, Sunny. I am sticking around for you. After all, isn't that what a good boyfriend is meant to do? And I..." Kel grinned widely, "...wanna be an awesome boyfriend!"
Sunny's breath caught in his throat, and he felt the tears come again.
"Oh no, what did I do!?" Kel began to panic. "D-Did I say something creepy!? I'm sorry, I—"
Finally, finally, Sunny hugged Kel back with all his might. He looked up at Kel and gave him a small, rare smile despite the tears in his eyes.
"Thank you," Sunny whispered.
Kel's expression softened, and he smiled back. "Of course, Sunshine." Kel kissed Sunny's forehead. "You don't have to be afraid. I'll be here for you. I promise that for as long as you want to be with me, I will be your rock and your home. You will always have me."
Sunny leaned into Kel's hold. After a few minutes, Kel wheezed.
"Sorry, but it is so freaking hot! Wanna go get some ice cream or something?" Kel asked.
Sunny chuckled and nodded.
As soon as they entered the café, the two boyfriends sighed in relief.
"I fucking love air conditioning," Sunny mused aloud.
Kel's eyes were as wide as saucers. "Did you just curse?"
Sunny tilted his head to the side innocently before heading over to the counter with his order typed on his phone.
Kel could only stare.
...Did that just happen?

Chapter Text
"Alright, Sunny. Here's what we're gonna do."
The two of them were sitting in Sunny's treehouse with determined expressions on their faces. After playing a game of 'Would You Rather' with the gang, the two boys found that the group thought that they were too good of kids to do anything bad or "cool."
Well, they were going to prove them wrong.
"We're gonna get home and make these." Kel pointed at each drawing of their pranks that Sunny did, and Sunny nodded in return.
This was going to be great.
First prank first...the Picnic Pranked. Mom had sent Kel on an errand, and Sunny was tagging along.
"Okay, so Mom said we needed to get more dish soap, bread, milk, cheese, and salsa," Kel said, reading off the list. "You've got your money, right, Sunny?"
Sunny held up his twenty-dollar bill and a ten.
"Great!" Kel cheered. "You can get the stuff for the cookies, and I can get the stuff for Mom."
Sunny nodded once and scurried off through the aisles. It was, luckily, not a busy day, so he was able to grab everything quickly, efficiently, and easily. When the two boys met up at the counter, they found that this was easy.
Too easy.
When they got to Kel's without anyone being home, Kel was suspicious but said nothing.
"Okay," Kel muttered, looking at the recipe Sunny had scribbled down. "We need to measure the ingredients, right? But...how much is a tablespoon?"
Sunny shrugged and looked through Kel's cabinets. He pulled out a few measuring cups, and they began to measure the ingredients.
Then, when they tried to measure the flour—
"CRAP!"
Kel lost his grip on the bag and dropped it, sending the measuring cup tumbling to the floor and making it shatter.
"Oh no oh no oh no!" Kel shook as he scrambled to the ground to pick up the shards. "Crap! These were Mom's favorites, too!"
Sunny bent down and began to do the same, yelping them he got a cut on his palm.
"Sunny!" Kel rushed over and grabbed Sunny's hand, which was somehow whiter due to the flour. A dark red line began to form, and Sunny's eyebrows were pulled together in a way that suggested he wasn't so much in pain as he was shocked.
"You're hurt!" Kel jumped to his feet. "Hang on! I think we have a first aid kit! Um, um, run it under some water!"
As Kel rushed away to grab the first aid kit, Sunny walked over to the sink and ran his hand under the water. He grimaced a little; it stings. When Kel came back and doctored up the cut, the two boys were silent.
"Are you okay?" Kel asked softly.
Sunny nodded, and it fell quiet again. Their eyes met, and Sunny found himself thinking...
Wow. Kel's eyes are really pretty.
Kel swallowed and broke eye contact first, looking down at Sunny's hand. "Here..."
He applied the Captain Spaceboy bandage and stared for a moment. Then, carefully, he pressed his lips against it.
Sunny's cheeks immediately were set aflame. He tilted his head to the side.
"Ah—sorry!" Kel dropped Sunny's hand. "Mom always does that when I get hurt, s-so I thought, um, maybe it would make you feel better, too!"
Sunny nodded and gazed at the place where Kel kissed. When the boy had his back turned to Sunny, Sunny kissed that spot.
It was still warm, too.
Eventually, when they cleaned up their mess and got the cookies in the oven (after adding a secret ingredient to some of the cookies), they moved to the living room to watch some afternoon cartoons. They weren't nearly as good as the ones on Saturday morning, but still! Cartoons with friends were still the best cartoons!
As they sat on the couch watching the TV, Hero came inside.
"Hey, Hero!" Kel waved. "We're making something."
"I can smell it," Hero replied. "It smells pretty good! Almost like cookies."
"Yeah!" Kel grinned. "They're extra-special cookies from me and Sunny! We made some for everyone for the picnic this afternoon!"
"Well, I can't wait to try some." Hero gave them a warm smile. "Anyway, can you two turn the TV down? I'm going to be studying upstairs."
"Whaaat? But it's summer vacation!" Kel whined.
"Yeah, but Mari and I will be sophomores next year. We need to make sure we can do good on the Fall ACT."
"I thought that was only for juniors?"
"We wanted to do it a bit early, since we have the opportunity to take it multiple times," Hero explained.
"That's kinda dumb," Kel commented. "Who wants to take a stupid test more than once if you don't have to?"
Sunny shrugged, even if Kel wasn't exactly asking him.
"You'll understand when you're older." Hero headed upstairs, and Kel looked back at Sunny with a guilty expression.
"Hero was really nice about our cookies," Kel mumbled.
Sunny nodded. It did make him feel kinda bad for pranking him...
"...Oh well!"
When the cookies were done, each of the boys wrapped two cookies in a small paper bag they each decorated. Then, they tied them with ribbons and headed to the secret hangout spot.
On the way there, they were quiet, which was unusual since Kel usually wouldn't settle his ramblings down. Then, out of nowhere:
"Sunny? Do you wanna get married someday?"
Sunny froze and sputtered, his normally stoic façade completely shattering. He turned bright red before taking time to think.
...Did he want to get married one day? Well, even if he liked Aubrey a lot...he also had fondness for Kel. Kel was his best friend besides Basil, after all, and...hm...
Seems like Sunny wanted to get married, but who could he choose?
He really, really liked Aubrey...but Basil was Sunny's best friend! He wanted to be with him forever, too!
...But Kel...he seemed like the most natural choice. They spent the most time together while Mari and Hero did the same. They were closer than anyone, and even if Kel called Sunny his brother because of Hero and Mari...
Oh.
"...Mhm."
"Oh! Cool!" Kel squeaked. "Um...who would you wanna marry someday?"
Sunny swallowed and hesitated...
"Sunny! Kel! What took you guys so long?!"
The boys jumped and whirled around to see an annoyed Aubrey with her fists on her hips.
"Basil was literally tearing up because he was scared you guys left to go somewhere without us!" Aubrey scolded. "How dare you keep Sunny away so long, Kel!?"
"Hey! That's not fair!" Kel exclaimed. "Sunny and I were just preparing something special!"
"Uh-huh. Suuure." Aubrey crossed her arms. "You can't hog Sunny's attention forever, you know!"
Sunny awkwardly stepped away just as Hero came into view.
"Guys," Hero warned, "Mari's getting annoyed. Come on."
Aubrey and Kel continued to bicker a bit as they stepped into the hangout. Sunny watched quietly, and Hero placed a hand on Sunny's shoulder.
"Are you okay?"
Sunny nodded at Hero's question, and as Hero left, Sunny took a deep breath and followed behind.
Once they entered the hangout, Sunny and Kel handed everyone their cookies. Basil would get the least amount of pain from this prank since he wasn't super mean; per Kel's request, Aubrey would suffer the most. Each of them smiled and thanked the boys...
And each of them turned bright red immediately from the spicy chili powder they put in the cookies.
Basil let out a yelp and teared up, but he forced down the cookie. Hero sputtered and reached for the water, and Mari looked shocked.
Aubrey...oh, dear.
"KEEEL!" Aubrey screeched, sticking her tongue out in a desperate attempt for coolness on it. "AH'M GONNAH KILL YAH!"
Kel burst out laughing and took off running. Sunny darted behind some bushes to hide from Mari, holding back laughter.
Then, a figure appeared beside Sunny, giggling.
"I distracted her with a butterfly!" Kel whisper-yelled.
Sunny giggled back a little, and he tested his hand on top of Kel's. While he gazed into his eyes, he only had one thought in mind:
I want to get married someday...
Because I want to get married to you.

Chapter Text
Kel and Sunny were busy with their respective majors, but this was one of those rare nights that neither wanted to go to a party nor had school work to do the next day. However, it was the time they usually spent separate—"down time," if you will.
It was quiet in their dorm room. Sunny was busy drawing commissions he had stacked up for extra money, and Kel was playing a game on his handheld device. The two were sitting in an easy silence, surprisingly not that tired for it being midnight.
"Hey, Sunny?" Kel finally broke the silence, not looking up from his game.
He got a hum in return.
"Wanna do something stupid?"
Sunny glanced up from his tablet and tilted his head.
Kel turned on a radio and got to his feet, tossing his device aside. He held out a hand and grinned. "Dance with me."
Sunny stared at Kel's hand for a moment before taking it and standing. Kel pulled him close to his chest and led him in an awkward sway.
"Sorry!" Kel chuckled. "I'm not exactly a dancer, and it's late..."
Sunny shook his head and adjusted them. His hand was on Kel's waist, and his other hand had his fingers intertwined with Kel's. The only light besides the small lamp on Sunny's desk was the moon outside, and the song felt...intimate.
They tripped over their own feet several times, earning some laughs from Kel. When the song ended, they continued to sway, not ready to end this moment.
"Sunny?"
A hum.
"Do you think...we'll always be best friends?"
A nod.
"...Sunny?"
A tilt of the head.
This could ruin everything. This could end it all...
But this moment felt so right. So perfect.
"I love you."
A pair of arms pulled Kel into an embrace.
Notes:
I hope you guys enjoyed! Also, for anyone wondering, the date was legitimately perfect. Picnic under the stars...
Also, my break is over and I miss my partner dearly...BUT this means I should be able to write more for you guys :D

Chapter Text
"We'll do it all—
Everything—
On our own."
Eighteen years old.
Sunny never thought he'd make it here.
A lot has happened in eighteen years. Sunny made some close friends that would somehow find it within them to forgive him for a terrible deed; he accidentally killed his sister...
So much, good and bad, happened.
But Mari will never be eighteen.
On a day Sunny was meant to feel free, he found himself curled up to his pillow with tears in his eyes and his curtains drawn.
His friends and his boyfriend would be there later for a party that Kel was going to help set up. Sunny's mother is working late, but she's planning on taking Sunny to a midnight dinner.
Sunny was regretting the idea of a party.
"We don't need
Anything
Or anyone."
Suddenly, there was a knock on his door.
"Heyyy! Sunny! Guess who's here!"
There's only one guy who can sound so cheerful.
Sunny got to his feet and trudged over to the door. He opened it and stared blankly at his beaming boyfriend.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" Kel cheered, pumping a fist into the air. "Ready to set up your party?"
Sunny looked away, tightening his lips into a thin line.
Kel paused. "Hey...are you okay, Sunshine?"
Sunny nodded weakly.
"...Is it a bad day?" Kel knew about Sunny's depression and...less-than-ideal thoughts.
Sunny slumped over and headbutted Kel's chest lightly.
"If I lay here;
If I just lay here,
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?"
"Come on." Kel took Sunny's shoulder and led him over to his bed. He plopped onto the mattress and held out his arms. "Let's cuddle for a while."
Sunny had stopped getting physical affection after Mari died, so it still surprised him when Kel offered to hug him or give him kisses. Nevertheless, Sunny crawled into his boyfriend's lap and hid his face in the crook of Kel's neck.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Kel murmured, running his fingers through Sunny's hair.
"I don't quite know
How to say
How I feel."
Sunny shook his head.
"Okay," Kel whispered. "Take all the time you need."
Sunny let himself relax a little, closing his eyes and exhaling slowly. When the world feels like it's too much, he always felt safe and loved and secure in Kel's arms. Kel was his rock, his best friend, his lover.
Whatever Sunny needs, Kel has.
Of that, he is certain.
"Those three words
Are said too much—
They're not enough."
Without thinking, Sunny leaned up and kissed Kel's cheek.
Kel's eyes widened, and for a moment, Sunny was afraid he crossed a line. Yet, like always, Kel grinned a wide grin and hugged him tightly. Of course he would—he's Kel. He's the same Kel that always gave Sunny a hug or kiss when he least expected it.
"Feeling better?" Kel inquired.
Sunny nodded and hugged Kel tight.
"Okay."
"If I lay here;
If I just lay here,
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?"
Sunny got off of Kel's lap and laid back on his bed, making grabby hands at him. Kel just laughed and laid beside him, pulling him closer.
"Sunny, I love cuddling with you...but we've gotta get ready to set up your party."
Sunny pouted a little.
"You're right," Kel amended. "You're the birthday boy. You make the rules."
Sunny nodded, satisfied.
"Forget what we're told
Before we get too old;
Show me a garden that's bursting into life."
"Hey, Sunny?" Kel looked down at him. "If I can ask...what did you do those four years you stayed inside? I mean, did you do online school?"
Sunny immediately felt a tinge of guilt as he shook his head.
"Oh."
Silence.
"Let's waste time
Chasing cars
Around our heads."
"...I slept," Sunny mumbled.
"Slept?"
"...Yeah."
"Like...you stayed asleep most of the time?"
A nod.
"Sunny, that's called a coma!"
Sunny cracked a small smile. "I mean, I woke up and ate sometimes."
Kel listened closely as Sunny's expression fell.
"...Yet...I made this...fantasy world where we all lived as kids...and Mari never...I never..."
"Kind of like Peter Pan!"
"I need your grace
To remind me
To find my own."
Sunny's eyebrows furrowed.
"You know...Peter Pan? The story about a bunch of kids going to a place where they'll never grow up?" Kel laughed awkwardly. "Sorry, your story just reminded me of that."
Sunny shrugged.
"...Is that why you're sad today?" Kel's voice was uncharacteristically soft. "Is it because you...miss Mari?"
Sunny stayed quiet, but he gripped Kel's jersey tighter.
"...Sunny..."
"If I lay here;
If I just lay here,
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?"
Kel held Sunny a little tighter in his arms. "Everything's gonna be alright. Okay? Mari would want you to be happy today. In fact, I'm sure she's watching over us, happy and proud of her little brother for reaching eighteen."
Sunny sniffled, his eyes stinging. Tears began to run down his cheeks.
"Forget what we're told
Before we get too old;
Show me a garden that's bursting into life."
"It's okay to miss her," Kel murmured, pressing a kiss to Sunny's forehead. "It's normal, but don't let your grief dictate your birthday. Okay?"
Sunny stifled a sob, shaking a little in Kel's arms.
"It's okay. I'm here."
And with those four words, Sunny let go. He let himself cry as hard as he needed to, because dammit, he missed his big sister and felt guilty.
And...maybe he didn't need to feel ashamed of his emotions.
Kel wasn't going anywhere.
Sunny looked up through tired, puffy eyes into Kel's. His were so kind and warm...
"All that I am,
All that I ever was,
Is here in your perfect eyes, they're all I can see."
"I love you," Sunny choked out.
Kel smiled gently back. "I love you, too, Sunshine."
"I don't know where;
Confused about how as well—
Just know that these things will never change for us at all."
After a few minutes of simply gazing into each other's eyes, Kel spoke up.
"How about we make today a relaxing day? We can have a big party on a different day. We can cuddle and watch movies and eat junk food." Kel ruffled Sunny's hair. "How does that sound? You, me, Aubrey, Hero, and Basil just sitting around, watching movies...just like old times."
Minus Mari...
But that's okay.
Sunny nodded with a smile.
If I lay here...
If I just lay here...
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

This kinda bleeds into "Hurt/Comfort," oops—

Chapter 5: Enough (Hurt/Comfort)
Summary:
Kel tries to run away with Sunny.
Pre-canon.
Chapter Text
Sunny was staring at the ceiling when he heard tapping on his window. He sat up and almost screamed when he saw Kel's face pressed up against the glass.
Sunny rushed over to the window and opened it.
"Come on, Sunny!" Kel grinned. "Let's head to the park!"
Sunny's eyebrows furrowed; usually, Kel would warn him beforehand if he wanted to sneak out. Nevertheless, he nodded and headed downstairs.
As soon as he got outside, Kel grabbed Sunny's hand and began running towards...
The bus stop?
Sunny forced them to stop before they got there, his expression hardening. When Kel looked back to ask what was wrong, he fell quiet.
The two stared.
Finally, Kel spoke up. "...I'm sorry I lied to you. I just...wasn't sure if you'd run away with me."
Sunny's eyes widened, and he tilted his head to the side.
"Look, I..." Kel looked at his feet. "I got into a fight with my parents, so I...wanted to run away. But then I thought...you'd be sad if I wasn't here. S-So I...yeah."
Sunny nodded.
"It just...it sucks!" Kel huffed, tears coming to his eyes. "I try really hard to do things right, but it's alway 'Hero this,' 'Hero that!' Why don't they get that I'm my own person, that I'm not Hero, that I'll never be Hero?" Kel sniffled. "Is who Kel is not enough? Am I not enough for them?"
Sunny let go of Kel's hand...
...and pulled him into the tightest hug he could manage.
"You're more than enough, Kel."
A beat.
"S-Sunny..."
Kel let out a wail and buried his face into Sunny's shoulder. Sunny simply held Kel close, rubbing his back in small circles in an attempt to make him feel better, and Kel only cried harder.
After a few minutes, Kel pulled away and wiped at his nose. "Sorry, Sunny. P-Please don't tell anyone you saw me cry! Aubrey would make fun of me forever."
Sunny nodded and patted Kel's head. He dug into his pocket and pulled out two tickets for the snow cone stand that was always open during the summer.
"Woah!" Kel lit up. "Score! Where'd you get these?"
Sunny averted his eyes.
"Oh-ho-ho!" Kel grinned. "You pulled a heist on Mari! I like your style!"
Sunny punched Kel's arm lightly with a tiny smile.
"Let's go get snow cones!" Kel cheered, and the two of them walked back to the park, hand in hand.
Notes:
I hope you guys enjoyed this lil oneshot! There's two more after this, and I plan on getting them out before tomorrow (Sunburn week starts tomorrow!).

I WILL FINISH THIS BEFORE NEW YEAR'S! HOPEFULLY! I hate leaving things unfinished, hence the very VERY late entry.

Chapter Text
When one moves in with their partner, important decisions are made.
"What color should the walls be?"
"Do we decorate for holidays?"
"What chores do each of us do?"
Another one of those questions is..."should we get a pet?"
The answer is...yes.
Yes, we should get a pet.
Because of their answer being the same, we now find Sunny and Kel at the animal shelter, looking at the options.
"Sunny! Look at these babies!" Kel cooed, his eyes practically sparkling at the sight of the puppies yipping at him.
Meanwhile, Sunny was staring at the cats with a barely-visible smile on his face.
"Aw, I wish we could adopt them all!" Kel pouted.
Sunny nodded, scratching behind a kitten's ear.
"Huh." Kel stood up properly. "Actually, what if we adopt the adult pets?"
Sunny tilted his head.
"Adults aren't as adopted as the babies," Kel explained, "so...I dunno. I thought we could try that."
Sunny paused, thinking. Then, he stood and nodded.
The two went further into the shelter, and Kel's heart almost broke.
There, sitting in a cage, all alone...was an old boxer dog.
"Hey, girl," Kel smiled softly. He squatted, and the dog trudged up to him. She sniffed his hand he stuck through the bars and licked it.
"Awww! Sunny, can we take her?" Kel begged.
Sunny came over to the dog and stared. Hm...he was never one for dogs, but Kel looked so happy, and...
Well, she looked sweet.
Kel glanced at the paper attached to the cage. "Ollie is a Boxer-Rottweiler mix who was mistreated by her previous owners. She is a quiet dog who is very friendly. Awww! Baby!" Kel immediately started tearing up and made puppy eyes at Sunny. "Pleeeeease!"
Sunny nodded.
"Yes!" Kel jumped up and scooped Sunny into a hug, laughing. "Thank you thank you thank you!!"
Sunny glanced over and saw a lonely cat. He tapped Kel's shoulder and pointed.
It was a black cat with one eye. Chucky is a black cat who was found on the streets. He's a playful, loving cat.
Sunny tugged on Kel's shirt rapidly, pointing at the cat.
"Welcome to your new home, babies!" Kel cheered, letting them out of their carriers.
The two pets stared at each other. Chucky came over to Ollie...and rubbed against her, starting to purr.
Kel could be sworn he was about to have a heart attack.
Notes:
Ollie is based on a dog I had as a kid who passed awat, and Chucky is based off of one of our cats with the same name.
I love Chucky sm. Precious baby lost his eye due to infection, I'm so glad me mum kept him ;-;<3
Chapter 7: Sunshine (Free Day)

Chapter Text
On Kel's final day on earth, he was greeted by sunlight, which made him smile.
Kel glanced over and smiled at the sight of his lover. They'd been married at least forty years if not longer, and Sunny was still as beautiful now as he was then.
"Gooooood morning, Sunshine!" Kel chirped, still full of boundless energy while in his eighties. He hopped out of bed and hummed, not expecting an answer.
He looked at the fanart on the walls. Sunny had gotten fanart for a game he made about his own life called OMORI, and Kel couldn't be prouder. There were also countless medals and trophies around, but they were from Kel's glory days, back when "cancer" and "amputation" weren't part of his vocabulary.
Oh, those were the days...
Kel headed for the kitchen, then paused. You know...he wasn't really hungry. Breakfast may be the most important meal of the day, but he just wasn't feeling it.
That's fine.
Kel had the option to go into hospice when it was determined that radiation wouldn't help, but he had declined, figuring he'd be okay on his own. He hurt all the time, but there's nothing a nice walk couldn't help!
But...maybe a nap would be better.
Kel sat in his chair, coughing. He was so healthy; the fact he's...
The sunshine shown down on him.
"Kel."
Kel looked up and smiled. "Sunshine."
"Hey." Sunny bent down and gave Kel's cheek a kiss. "I missed you."
"I know. But, hey! You're back!"
Sunny hesitated.
"...Oh." Kel laughed, tearing up as he continued to cough up blood. "I'm dying, aren't I?"
"...Yeah."
"Stay with me. Please."
"I will. I'm here for you, Kel."
"Sunny?"
"Yeah?"
"...I love you. So, so much."
"I love you, too."
"...S-Sing to me, please," Kel begged.
"Okay."
Sunny cupped Kel's face, even as Kel began to choke on his own blood.
"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine...you make me happy when skies are grey..."
Kel gasped, trying to live. He wasn't ready—
...
And yet...Sunny was here.
"You'll never know, dear, how much I love you..."
...Peace.
Kel felt peace.
"Please don't take my sunshine away."
Kel leapt from his body and threw his arms around his long-departed lover, sobbing even as he laughed.
Even in death, Kel smiled.
