Gold expected Red to tell him what he already assumed; that he didn’t need friends besides his Pokémon, or that he didn’t need Gold specifically. That he prefered the silence of the mountain. Something like that, anyway. He didn’t know how to counter such a response, but he also felt like he couldn’t just give up entirely on befriending him.
The answer Red actually gave was very different, though. The older boy stared deep into Gold with a hard gaze that pierced his soul, the fire from the center of the room dancing off the reflection of his brown eyes, and as he opened his mouth to reply, he appeared almost… Sad. Depressed, even.
“You don’t need me. Spare yourself the trouble.”

When Gold finds Red at the top of Mt. Silver after disappearing three years ago and is unable to convince him of coming home, he begins going very far out of his way to show Kanto’s top trainer the compassion and empathy he so desperately needs.
