Chapter Text
“Dammit, Deku! You can’t just fucking jump in the middle of a fight without some kind of warning! Oi! I’m talking to you! Are you even fucking listening to me?!”
“Bakugo. Calm down. Even Endeavor said that his assistance helped us.”
“Shut the hell up, IcyHot bastard! We could’ve taken that villain without him!”
“No.”
Izuku sighed as he tugged his shoes off at the doors of 1-A dorm, happy to finally be at home–or the closest thing he gets to it these days. Kacchan had been yelling and ranting as soon as Endeavor’s driver dropped them off at the UA barrier.
“Midoriya,” a new voice had the greenette turning towards it–Ashido–holding a brown package in her hands. She was also ignoring the yelling behind the green teenager. “This came for you while you were out. We didn’t want to go into your room without permission and we didn’t really want to leave it in the middle of the hallway.”
Izuku grabbed the package from her hands and moved to drop his bag across the back of a chair. It was from his mom.
“Why would mom send me a package? I was gonna see her in two weeks anyways,” he muttered softly to himself.
“What do you think it is?” Todoroki asked, also ignoring the explosive blonde beside him.
“We’ve been dying for you to come home and open it!” Kaminari shouted from his seat in the common room.
“We thought it was weird, too, for your mom to just send something here,” Uraraka spoke up.
Izuku opened the small box and saw that it contained a disc marked “Izuku” in unfamiliar writing and a letter. Holding the disc in his right hand, he unfolded the letter and immediately recognized his mom’s handwriting:
Izuku,
I know this is strange of me to send you this when I’m going to see you soon. I was cleaning out some storage boxes in the office and came across this. These are some baby videos your father took of you. I haven’t watched them. It is your decision to watch them. If you don’t, I’ll understand. That’s mainly why I sent them to you–I’d flood our apartment and everyone else’s if I watch them right now.
If you do decide to watch them, please let me know about it. If it’s good, I’d like to make copies and give some to the Bakugo’s. These will have Katsuki in them, I’m sure, since you two were always inseparable.
Love,
Mom
“Midoriya?” Todoroki snapped Izuku out of staring at the letter and the disc that holds his name in his dad’s handwriting.
“It’s … my baby videos. From my dad.”
Those words finally made Kacchan shut up. Ashido perked up and moved towards Izuku. “Your dad? You never talk about him! Oh, can we watch?! I’d love to see you as a baby!”
“He was fat and ugly. What’s there to see?” Kacchan said, shoving past Izuku and sitting beside Kirishima and Kaminari on the couch.
Todoroki put a hand on Izuku’s shoulder. “Midoriya?”
Izuku swallowed and looked up at his best friend, already feeling pinpricks of tears in his eyes. “I don’t even remember my dad all that well.”
“Do you want to watch it? Would you like some privacy?”
“I’m not sure,” he answered truthfully.
“I’d really like to see some videos of you as a baby, Izuku!” Uraraka clapped her hands in excitement.
“Babies are the cutest!” Hagakure chimed in.
The corner of Izuku’s mouth perked up in a small smile. “Well this at least answers why my mom doesn’t have many photos of me as a toddler. Yeah, I guess we can watch it. Where sh–”
“In here!” Ashido yelled, pulling Izuku’s arm almost out of his socket while she dragged him to the TV.
“Wait, Ashido, I don’t thi–”
“Do you guys want to see baby videos of our little broccoli lord?”
A chorus of yes, of course, why not resounded around the room … excluding a blonde who just growled. Izuku blushed and started setting it up before grabbing a seat on the floor between Uraraka and Todoroki.
A man appeared on the screen, the video shaking and flopping around.
“Shoot! Ah! Ugh! Er, I’m not really good with this technology crap.” The voice was deep and gravelly, but also hoarse and weak. When the video stopped shaking, the room gasped.
“Oh my goodness! You are literally the combination of your parents!” Ashido squealed.
The man had curly black hair, brown eyes, and his pale face was smothered in freckles. He had Izuku’s large smile on his face, though it looked like he was in pain.
“He’s just as dorky as you, too,” Uraraka giggled.
Izuku’s father coughed on the screen, bouts of flame leaving his mouth.
“Fire?” Todoroki asked.
“His dad could breathe fire,” Kacchan spoke up. “Are we going to have to listen to this whole thing with you extras interrupting the entire fucking time?”
Sorry went around, but quickly hushed as the man in the video spoke again.
“I-Izuku. I was hoping to have more videos on this thing before doing this. Perhaps we could even make multiple of these video things. Oh, wouldn’t that be fun? Having a whole *cough, cough* collection of these to just pop in and watch whenever we wanted to? We could open up our video store with all of our videos! Check them out like library books! *cough* Though, if each of them are as aggravating as this one, I’m not sure I’d really like that idea.”
The man in the video put his hand to his chin and started talking really fast, muttering to himself about all the possible ways to make technology easier and Izuku blushed as he realized that’s where he got his muttering habit from.
“No DNA test needed, folks,” Kaminari jokes, making the class laugh.
The man bent over coughing again, startling him out of his muttering. “Sorry, Inko’s usually here to stop me if I go too far. *cough* Son, I wanted to give this to you personally–maybe when you became a hero or got married or just a random birthday gift, I don’t know. But it looks like I won’t be here long enough to do any of that.”
“Oh no,” Uraraka whispered.
“We have all these quirks, Izuku, and yet we still don’t have a cure for cancer. Isn’t that a bitch? *cough, cough, sniff* Don’t tell your mother I said that unless she’s right there with you. In that case, whoops .”
He’s smiling, not looking the least bit guilty. “I’m in America right now, hoping that their healthcare system has some better preventative measures and care, but it’s not looking like that so far. So, I’m recording this and setting this thing up for you. I hope you’ll enjoy these memories as much as I did. I love you, Izuku and Inko. Inko, if you’re there, you can’t be mad at me when Mitsuki says worse! Katsuki is already starting to have a ‘potty mouth’ as you like to put it.”
Izuku’s father started laughing, which made the class laugh, too, much to the annoyance of the potty mouth teen.
“Izuku, I know you’ll grow up to be a hero–whether in the actual sense or the practical sense. I just want you to know that no matter what you grow up to be, I’ll be happy for you. Always stay the kind and humble boy you are and don’t change for anyone. I’ll always be watching over you, as will your mother and the Bakugos and all of the friends I know you’ll make. I look forward to seeing you again. I love you.”
A few sniffles went around the room as the video faded to black and Izuku wiped the tears off of his cheeks.
“Midoriya, would you like to stop it?” Iida asked.
He shook his head. “N-no. I want to watch them with everyone. M-mom’s right. We’d probably flood the apartment if we watched them alone.”
Todoroki patted Izuku’s shoulder again as the next video started.
Izuku groaned in horror at seeing his very pregnant and very much in labor mom in the hospital.
“Are we about to watch you be born?! ” Kirishima shouted.
“Birth is beautiful!” Yaomomo yelled back.
“Hisashi! Put that damn camera down and get your ass over here!”
Izuku’s mouth dropped open at his mom’s swearing.
“But honey, you’re gonna want to watch this later!”
“Hisashi!”
“Just hand me the camera, Hisashi,” a familiar voice said.
“Oh, hell no!” Kacchan yelled.
“Masaru, I swear to everything that is all fucking good, if you aim that camera at my vagina, I will kill you!”
“Mitsy, she sounds just like you di–ow! I’m holding our son!” The camera shook as it was transferred into Uncle Masaru’s hands, the video lopsided as it watched Izuku’s dad rush to his mom’s side.
“Did you drop him? No. Give me that!” Auntie Mitsuki had yanked the camera from her husband’s hands and pointed it at him, showing a three-month-old Kacchan sleeping in his arms before panning over to the hospital room doors, showing a gowned nurse and doctor walking in.
“Who’s ready to have a baby?”
“Wow, Kacchan, when you said you were inseparable, I didn’t know that meant you were there for Midoriya being born!” Kaminari teased.
“Don’t call me that, Dunce Face! I’m not fucking watching this shit!”
Izuku turned his head at the sounds of a scuffle, seeing that a hardened Kirishima and Kaminari were holding the blonde down. “Bro, calm down!”
He turned around to continue watching his birth. Auntie had decided to just video his father holding his mom’s hand, rubbing her arm, and trying to soothe her. The female classmates awed. “Just a little bit more, honey. Just a little more and our son will be here. Our little Izuku. Breathe, baby.”
“Alright, Midoriya, we’ve got a head here full of dark curls!” the doctor said.
“Are they black or green?” Uncle Masaru asked.
“Does that matter right now?” Auntie asked in return.
“Well Kats came out blond! He’s even got red eyes! Got nothing of me in him!”
“Maybe he’ll have your attitude,” Auntie said snarkily.
“Oof. How wrong was she?” Ojiro quipped, the class laughing with him and ignoring some growls.
A baby’s cries echoed throughout the room, followed by a louder baby. The camera panned to show a wrapped Izuku being handed to Inko and Hisashi, who immediately started cooing at him, while sounds of Masaru shushing Kacchan were in the background.
The clip ended with a close-up of Izuku’s face on his mother’s chest.
“You were so cute , Midoriya!” Jiro announced. “Don’t worry, Bakugo, you were, too.”
“Shut up!”
A new clip started, Hisashi holding the camera again, pointing at Masaru and baby Kacchan. They were looking down at the sleeping Izuku in the hospital bassinet.
“Look at him, Kats,” Hisashi said. “That’s gonna be your best friend!”
Izuku watched in awe, a bittersweet taste in his mouth, as Masaru leaned baby Kacchan closer to baby Izuku. Kacchan reached down and grabbed Izuku’s hand, who immediately latched onto it in his sleep. Kacchan started waving his arm slightly, making Izuku wave with him.
“Don’t wake him up, Kats,” Masaru said softly, as if three-month-old Kacchan would listen. Kacchan started cooing a little.
“What happened to you, man? You were adorable!” Sero teased.
“They were so cute!” Hagakure squealed, the shorts flapping up and down and Izuku could imagine legs kicking in aggression.
The next clip was Hisashi filming and narrating Inko, holding Izuku, walking into their home. That’s not the apartment, Izuku thought. The next one was of Izuku sleeping in a car seat, then in a different bassinet, then in a swing. The videos captured Izuku crying, sneezing, laughing, his first bath, his first bottle, even the morning after his first time sleeping through the night. There were videos of Mitsuki and Inko pushing their strollers around the neighborhood, baby Izuku and baby Kacchan cooing and babbling.
“Dang, Bakugo, does your mom even age?” Ojiro asked.
When Izuku looked to be around three months old, the videos started also featuring Kacchan more. Masaru would spoon-feed Kacchan while also holding Izuku in his lap. Hisashi would circle them before Inko would speak up and say he’s gonna make everyone dizzy if he kept that up.
Some videos showed Kacchan and Izuku in the same playpen, playing with toys and having crying fits whenever the other would take a toy away. Neither one of them could crawl at this point, so it was just the two of them on their bellies, trying to grab toys and then throwing them at each other.
One of the soft toys hit Izuku in the face, which made Sero shout, “Bakugo!”
Teenage Kacchan started laughing, but Izuku was still watching the clip. Baby Izuku had looked startled but then started giggling and grabbed the toy that hit his face.
“Even as a baby, you didn’t take Bakugo’s antics seriously,” Tokoyami said.
“Come on, guys, we were babies!” Izuku said. “It just tickled my face!”
He ignored the few classmates that gave him a weird glance.
“Guess what, Izuku?” Hisashi said, always talking to the baby greenette as if he could understand him. “Katsuki can crawl now! Mitsy and Maru are going to bring him by today! Are you excited?”
Baby Izuku started babbling and waving a toy he had gripped in his fist.
“I knew you would be!”
The video changed to Inko getting up and opening their door to see Auntie holding Kacchan. “This brat gets into any and everything,” Auntie said as her version of hello, walking into the house. “Just watch,” she said, putting Kacchan down.
However, all Kacchan did was crawl towards Izuku who was sitting in his playpen. “Of course. Of course when I want him to get into your stuff, he just goes to Izuku instead!” Mitsuki said in the background. The class ‘ aw’ ed.
Hisashi zoomed in on Kacchan babbling to Izuku and holding onto the plastic pen. The camera moved to be placed on a table or something and Hisashi walked over and picked up Kacchan to put him in the pen with Izuku. The camera stayed there as the adults talked about their jobs and stuff, while baby Kacchan and baby Izuku were handing each other toys, and Izuku would watch Kacchan crawl around the pen.
The next clip was of Izuku eating baby food in a high chair next to Kacchan, whose blonde hair was starting to get spiky.
“Look at his hair!” Kaminari laughed.
“All right, you two,” Hisashi said, unknowingly breaking up class 1-A’s laughter. “This is my first night alone with you. Mitsy and Maru need a date night–”
“Kill me,” teenage Kacchan said.
“And momma had to go back to work. Will you be good for me?” he asked, a spoon heading for Izuku’s mouth. Kacchan had some bananas, pasta, and chicken on his highchair table, eating with his fingers.
Hisashi went to serve Izuku some more food when the greenette suddenly struck and smacked the spoon out of his hand, sending pureed carrots and peas all over. Teenage Izuku started chuckling at the scene. His father’s mouth dropped open, staring in shock at a splattered Izuku and Katsuki.
“I guess we’re all getting a bath tonight, too, then.”
He stood up, presumably to grab a towel to wipe his face, when Kacchan picked up a piece of chicken and threw it at Izuku, babbling some nonsense, and class 1-A started roaring with laughter. Izuku babbled back and grabbed the spoon Hisashi left, shaking it in his fist. Bananas started being lobbed at Izuku’s face, some sticking to his cheeks.
“Oh no! Katsuki!”
“Why’d he call me out first? Deku started it!”
The class’s laughter got louder. Baby Izuku threw his spoon at Kacchan, sending more pureed food into his face. Baby Kacchan smiled and started laughing which made baby Izuku smile and laugh.
“At least you two can aim,” Hisashi sighed. The video wobbled as the camera was picked up. “Aw! You got food on it!”
The clip immediately cut to two naked boys sitting in a bubble-filled bathtub. Izuku flushed at the sight, happy you couldn’t see anything. That’d be more embarrassing than watching me be born.
“You two are troublemakers,” Hisashi said.
Tsu snorted. “Well, someone should tell Aizawa that they’ve been like that from the start, kero .”
The clip changed to a darkened room, the camera focusing on two babies, one with dark curly hair and one with blonde spiky hair, curled up together in a crib, their faces pressed close together.
Ashido squealed. “My heart! I can’t take much more of this cuteness!”
“Then let’s turn the damn thing off!”
“NO!” the class yelled.
The next clip was of Izuku crawling behind Kacchan during Christmas, following him all around Auntie’ and Uncle’s house.
“I told you that the nerd’s been following me for years,” teenage Kacchan spoke up. Izuku rolled his eyes, but didn’t respond.
A few more clips went by: Kacchan’s first steps, Izuku trying finger foods (which caused more food fights), Kacchan’s birthday party (in which he smashed the cake), some shots of them playing in water on the grass, Izuku’s first words (mama and dada).
In one clip, Izuku was starting to stand with support. He looked to be around a year old and his little self was watching Kacchan waddle around the backyard.
“I can feel it, Inko. Today’s the day he’ll walk!” Hisashi said. Inko was holding onto Izuku’s fingers, her face lit with joy and tears.
“You’ve been saying that every day!”
“And one of these days I’ll be right!” Hisashi laughed.
Baby Kacchan waddled up to Izuku. “Hi!”
Baby Izuku smiled and said hi back.
“B-ball,” Kacchan pointed at a ball and waddled over to it.
“Do you want to play with Katsuki?” Izuku’s mom asked. Baby Izuku stared after Kacchan and watched as he bent down to grab the ball. Izuku’s mom’s hands left Izuku’s and held onto his waist. “If you want to play with Katsuki, you’ve gotta walk first, Izuku.”
She let go and nudged him a little. “Go on, Izuku. Go play with Katsuki.”
Baby Izuku took a step, paused, and then took another. The camera was shaking a little, obviously from his dad’s excitement. “Go, son, go!” he whispered.
Izuku waddled after Kacchan, falling and getting back up every so often.
“He did it! I was right! I told you today’s the day! Mitsy! Maru! He’s walking!” The camera followed the two toddlers around the backyard.
Kacchan’s mom’s voice appeared in the background. “It’s about time!”
Kaminari started giggling. “Aww, he walked for his Kacchan!”
Izuku’s face felt hot. “I did not! I wanted the ball!”
Izuku had a feeling that the class didn’t believe him.
The next clip didn’t have Izuku’s parents in it.
“Izu-chan!” Auntie Mitsuki yelled, standing in the kitchen. “Kats! Stop playing and come eat!”
Uncle Masaru pointed the camera at the two toddlers running into the kitchen–as best as an almost two-year-old and one-and-a-half-year-old can. They followed Auntie to the dining table where they grabbed their spoons and chowed down messily.
“Why are you videoing dinner?” Auntie raised a blonde brow at her husband.
“Hashi asked me to.”
“Iku!” Kacchan spoke up. “Play?”
Izuku nodded.
“Oh my gods! Iku! That’s too precious!” Uraraka said.
“Shut up!” Older Kacchan yelled.
“No, no playing after dinner boys. You’re gonna have to get a bath first, okay?” Masaru spoke up.
“No!” Toddler Kacchan yelled.
“Yes, you brat! You’re dirty!”
“No!” he slammed a fist down on the table.
Toddler Izuku reached over and grabbed Kacchan’s arm and the blonde immediately quietened.
“Tell Hashi we’re keeping him,” Auntie jokes. “He’s our little Kats whisperer.”
Class 1-A laughs at Izuku who starts hiding his face in his arms.
The scene changes to a, once-again, sleeping and cuddling Izuku and Katsuki. The parents of the toddlers were whispering.
“He’s fine sleeping here. You don’t have to take him home,” Mitsuki said.
“We’ve got a doctor’s appointment in the morning. It’d be better to take him with us,” Inko whispered back.
Arms start wrapping around Izuku, but it startles Kacchan awake. “No!” he whines, grabbing Izuku back from the thief. “My Iku!”
Masaru reaches down and tries to settle Kacchan. “He’s gotta go home, buddy. You’ll see him another day.”
“Noooo,” he starts to cry.
Toddler Izuku struggles out of his parent’s grip, presumably his mom based on the size of the hands, and crawls towards Kacchan. They grab onto each other and hold tight, sniffling and pressing their foreheads together.
“Sorry Inko,” Mitsuki says. “I didn’t know they’d react like this.”
Hisashi chuckles into the camera. “Look how cute they are! Maybe we can just come back in the morning.”
Inko sighs. “If that’s okay with you.”
“It’s fine, Inko,” Masaru says. He reaches down to wipe away the toddlers’ tears.
“Wow,” Kirishima speaks up. “When you said inseparable, you really meant inseparable, bro.”
Izuku tried to hold back his own tears, knowing that this version of Kacchan doesn’t last that long. That in a couple of years, he’ll be looked down upon and pushed around and essentially ignored–all because he doesn’t get a quirk. Yeah, things are a little better between the two of them since their fight at Ground Beta and having to work together with Endeavor for their internships, but their friendship isn’t where it could be… where it used to be.
Kacchan doesn’t say anything and Izuku wonders if he’s thinking the same things. Probably not.
A few more clips went by: Izuku and Kacchan playing together, giving each other hugs, watching All Might on the TV which led to increased All Might toys, blankets, and clothing, especially on Christmas, where the two boys took turns opening gifts and showing off their new merchandise. There were more videos of them sleeping over at each other’s houses, a lone clip of Izuku acting as All Might and saving his parents from villains, a clip of the first time Izuku called Kacchan Kacchan (the girls cooing at it since it made the little Kacchan smile wide), some scenes of Izuku and Kacchan playing on the neighborhood playground with other kids.
In this clip, Izuku had to leave which again made Kacchan upset.
“We’ve gotta go bye-bye, Katsuki,” Hisashi said.
Two-year-old Kacchan stomped his foot. “No! I want Iku stay!”
“Izuku can’t stay, little man. Sorry, Kats,” Masaru said, rubbing his son’s head.
“Why?” the blonde whined.
“We’ve gotta go see the doctor. Izuku, go tell Katsuki bye-bye now. We’ll see him tomorrow,” Hisashi said softly.
Toddler Izuku turned and hugged his best friend, a soft “Bye-bye, Kacchan” reaching the camera’s microphone.
“Don’t go, Iku!”
Masaru held onto his son’s shoulders as he tried to follow Izuku to Hisashi’s side. “You can see your best friend tomorrow, Kats.”
Izuku hugged his knees to his chest and rested his chin on top, wiping the tears from his face. Todoroki and Uraraka rubbed his back.
“This must be around the time your dad gets diagnosed, huh?” Todoroki said.
“I guess,” the greenette whispered.
A new video appeared, this time the camera was held by Izuku’s mom as she recorded Izuku’s and Kacchan’s dads barbecuing on the grill. Izuku’s dad was blowing fire onto the coals and Kacchan’s mom was handing the men some beers, kissing her husband on the lips. On the grass, Izuku and Kacchan were chasing each other.
“Mommy!” Toddler Izuku ran up to Inko. “Why does Auntie kiss Uncle?”
Inko giggled, pointing the camera at her son. “Because that’s what married people do.”
“Married people? Are you and daddy married?”
“We are.”
“Why?” Little Izuku’s eyes were so wide and so brightly green.
“Because I love him.”
“You married him because you love him?”
“That’s right, Izuku!”
Little Izuku started jumping up and down, a big smile on his face. “Well, I love Kacchan! Does that mean I can kiss him and marry him?”
The class screamed and Izuku wished he had Hagakure’s quirk.
“OKAY! WE ARE TURNING THIS OFF!” he yelled, pausing the video.
“NO WE ARE NOT!” Uraraka shouted back, leaping over his lap to grab the remote before he could turn off the TV.
He pulled it out of her grasp and held his arm out wide. Todoroki snatched it and tried to hand it to Uraraka. Izuku gasped at the betrayal.
“How dare you?” he glared at his ex-best friend and lunged for the remote.
Uraraka enacted her quirk which sent the remote into the air. Just as Izuku was about to send out Black Whip, tape shot through the air and latched onto the remote.
“Sero!” he yelled, whipping his head around. “Give it back!”
“No!” the kid yelled, dodging an exploding teen’s hand.
Kacchan was fighting Kirishima’ and Kaminari’s hold. “We’re not fucking watching this anymore!”
Kirishima grabbed Kacchan’s arm and yanked it back to his side while Sero leaped off the couch and handed the remote off to Shoji, who hid it in one of his many arms, simultaneously pressing play. Izuku tried to lunge for the tall teenager, but Todoroki and Sero worked together to tape him and freeze him.
“I hate you all,” he growled out, glaring at eighteen of his classmates, refusing to look at the screen. The one he didn’t glare at–mainly because he was avoiding his eyes in the first place–was also spewing out his own version of hatred and insults.
“No, Izuku, you can’t marry Katsuki,” Inko says softly.
“Why? I love him,” little Izuku sounds as if he was on the verge of tears.
“Why is Izuku crying?” little Kacchan asks.
“M-mommy says I c-can’t marry you, K-kacchan.”
“Why the hell not?” Little Kacchan yells.
“Watch your mouth, you brat!” Mitsuki shouts.
“What’s going on?” the dads say at the same time.
“Daddy!” Izuku yells. “M-mommy says I can’t marry Kacchan! Daddy, I love him!”
If my face gets any hotter, I think I can melt Todoroki’s ice.
“Inko! Why can’t Izuku marry Katsuki?” Hisashi asks.
“Is it because we’re both boys?” Katsuki asks. “He cries like a girl. He could be a girl.”
Izuku hears his younger self gasp. “Kacchan, I don’t cry like a girl!”
“Yes you do, you crybaby!”
“I’m not a crybaby!”
“Yes you are!”
“Am not!”
“Are too!”
“Boys!” Inko shouts, startling even older Izuku. “Boys, calm down!”
“You said I can’t kiss and marry Kacchan, mommy!”
“Inko, what have you done?” Mitsuki asks, her voice shaking from laughter.
Uraraka laughs. “Izuku, do you know what you two are doing now?”
“You mean besides wishing this floor would swallow me whole?” he responds.
“Open your eyes! You too, Bakugo!” she says.
“NO!” they say at the same time.
Ashido giggles. “You two are holding hands and kissing Kacchan all over his face!”
“Kill me. Kill me now.” Izuku says, still squeezing his eyes shut.
“I love him, mommy! Why can’t I marry him?” little Izuku says.
“Yeah! Why can’t I marry Izuku? I love him and wanna be with him forever! He’s my bestest friend in the whole world!” little Kacchan says next.
Dammit. My heart. I’m gonna start crying!
“Boys,” Inko and Mitsuki say at the same time in a tone that makes them stop whining.
“You can get married when you’re older. But not right now.” Inko says.
Mitsuki chimes in. “And you may not even want to marry each other. You may fall in love with someone else.”
“Never!” shouts little Kacchan. “Only Izuku! We’re gonna grow up and be heroes like All Might and get married!”
Izuku could hear his father and Uncle Masaru laughing loudly. “Now look at what you’ve started, Inko,” Hisashi chuckles.
“Oh, shut it! This means you get to handle the other kind of talk!” Inko yells, making Masaru and Mitsuki roar in laughter.
Huh. What do you know? The ice is starting to melt. Maybe that’s what happens after your mom insinuates a sex-ed talk after Kacchan and I profess our undying love to each other in front of the whole damn class!!
“Soooo,” Kaminari draws out. “When’s the wedding?”
“SHUT THE FUCK UP! ” Kacchan yells.
“Calm down, Bakubro. The video’s over. Now it’s just you two running on the playground,” Kirishima says.
Izuku opens one of his eyes and exhales in relief at watching him and Kacchan playing together.
Todoroki and Sero remove their respective quirks after Izuku calms down. It seems that little Izuku and little Kacchan don’t talk about marriage or loving each other again, though it is still embarrassing for the greenette to watch little Kacchan throw a tantrum whenever Izuku can’t stay the night, or whenever the parents try to separate the two, Kacchan and Izuku just latch onto each other and refuse to let go.
The next videos after those are when Kacchan starts showing off his quirk, his ego and attitude slowly ramping up.
“It’s so amazing, Kacchan!” little Izuku says.
“Damn right, Izuku! I’m the best!”
“Hopefully he’ll grow out of that,” Hisashi whispers into the camera. The class laughs.
“My best friend is gonna be the coolest hero!” little Izuku pumps his fist into the air, staring bright-eyed at little Kacchan. Teenage Izuku feels the tell-tale signs of tears.
“That’s right! And my best friend is gonna be right beside me!”
And there they fall, pouring over Izuku’s cheeks like a river.
“We’re gonna be heroes together, Izuku!” Kacchan stands proudly, his hands fisted on his hips.
“What do you think my quirk’s gonna be?”
“It’s gotta be something cool since you’re my best friend!”
“Yeah! Maybe something just as awesome!” little Izuku jumps up and down.
“Not as awesome as me! But yeah! We’ll be partners and fight crime and be better than even All Might!”
Izuku stops jumping. “No one’s better than All Might, Kacchan,” he scowls.
“ We will be! Together! Undefeated!”
Hisashi laughs into the camera. “Man, this kid has just enough self-confidence to make up for Izuku’s lack of it. Maybe Izuku can balance him out later in life.” Hisashi starts coughing hard.
“W-what if I don’t get a cool quirk, Kacchan?”
Little Kacchan shrugs and smiles triumphantly. “Then I’ll just have to protect you! You can be my sidekick, Izuku. I’ll make sure no one hurts you!”
Teenage Izuku can’t take it anymore. Firing up his quirk, he runs out of the common room and into his bedroom before anyone can stop him.
Katsuki blanches at the video on the screen, his face paling even more after Deku runs out of the room. Kirishima and Kaminar have let the blonde go, but he doesn’t even feel like he could move a finger, nevertheless get off the couch.
The video pauses and everyone turns to look at Katsuki. Not everyone knows about him bullying Deku after finding out he doesn’t have a quirk, but his friends do. And he knows Deku’s friends do, especially since they were glaring at him now.
“Bro. You’re gonna have to talk to him,” Kirishima speaks up.
Todoroki shakes his head. “No. He needs to be alone right now.”
Katsuki doesn’t respond. He ignores everyone shouting out what they think is best for Deku and just stares at the mini-Katsuki and the mini-Deku, both smiling wide at each other. He wants to be angry. He can feel it already swirling in his gut, still there from listening to himself asking to marry Deku. But more than that, he can feel his guilt and shame rise up–and he’s angry at not liking that feeling.
Eventually, the class decides to give Deku space and they turn off the videos. Later, during dinner, Deku doesn’t come downstairs to eat. His group of friends stare at the stairs and elevator, hoping it will alert them to Deku’s presence, but he stays absent.
Katsuki’s friends try to lighten the mood by joking about the videos, Kaminari especially teasing about them getting married, but even Katsuki can’t bring himself to react.
He shovels the food into his mouth, places his dish into the dishwasher, and stomps over to the common room. He snatches the disc, storms up the stairs, and heads to Deku’s door. He pounds on it and isn’t surprised when he doesn’t get a response.
“Deku,” he says. “Open the damn door.”
Still no response, but he hears movement. He waits, but the door doesn’t open.
“You can either open this fucking door or I’ll blast it off.”
He hears Deku sigh and he smirks at the sound, listening as footsteps get closer to the door. “What do you want, Kacchan?”
“Open the door, Deku.”
Deku sighs again and opens it a smidgen, but Katsuki isn’t having that. He slams his hand into the door and pushes it wider until can get through, ignoring the shocked look on Deku’s tear-streaked, puffy-eyed face. He closes the door behind him and crosses his arms. “You didn’t come to dinner.”
“Not hungry,” Deku says obstinately, matching Katsuki’s stance.
“You can’t become better than me if you don’t eat, nerd.”
“Kacchan, I am not in the mood.”
“I don’t care.”
Deku’s face darkens and Katsuki knows that those weren’t the right words to say. He turns away and sits on the bed, hugging his knees to his chest. “You can leave now. I’m not eating dinner tonight.”
Katsuki growls, trying to keep his temper in check. “No.”
Deku buries his head into his knees, hiding his face. Katsuki stands and waits. “What do y-you want from me, Kacchan?” His voice is muffled, but Katsuki can hear the tears in it.
Katsuki steps up to Deku. “Look at me, Deku.”
“No. Go away.”
“Look at me.”
“No!”
Katsuki sits on the bed beside Deku and does something he hasn’t done since he was a child–he wraps his arms around Deku and holds him. Deku gasps and then immediately sobs harder. He unscrambles himself and lunges deeper into Katsuki’s arms, burying his sopping wet face into Katsuki’s chest, his fists clutching the back of his shirt.
“K-kacchan!” he cries out.
Katsuki shushes him and rubs his back softly. “Still a crybaby,” he whispers.
“Am n-not!”
Katsuki smirks to himself. “Are too. Still a fanboy nerd, too.”
“S-so?”
“It doesn’t creep you out having All Might stare at you while you sleep? He’s not Santa Claus.”
Deku chuckles in Katsuki’s shirt, the sound bringing a smile to the blonde’s face. “I don’t have any other sheets.”
“Tch. Excuses.”
The sobbing slowly stops and Deku releases his hold on Katsuki, wiping his face with the edge of his All Might shirt. His impossibly large green eyes stare into ruby red ones, his eyelashes still wet with his tears. “I’m sorry, Kacchan.”
Kacchan raises a hand and flicks the greenette on the forehead. “The hell do you have to be sorry for, nerd?”
“For the vide–”
“I’m gonna stop you right there. There is nothing in that video you need to apologize for, Deku.” Katsuki sighed and rubbed his face. “Fuck, I’m the one that should be apologizing! I’ve been fucking bullying you for years, Deku. All because you were … well, you. ”
Deku’s mouth dropped. “I–what do you mean?”
“Just … your dad had cancer, Deku. I don’t even fucking remember him, but dammit, he took all of these videos! All these happy, fucking sappy-ass videos of you for four years, and yet I tormented you for ten! ”
Deku smiled softly at the blonde. “Kacchan, I don’t even remember him.”
“That’s not the point! Dammit, Deku!” Katsuki stood up and paced, his hands fisting in his spiky hair.
“S-sorr–”
“Shut up! Don’t say that word!”
Katsuki growled to himself, ignoring the green eyes that have followed his every step since fucking birth apparently.
“Deku, do you remember the rest of that day?”
“What day?”
I’m gonna kill him. “The video you ran out of. Do you remember what else happened that day?” Katsuki stopped his pacing and turned to look at him.
Deku puts a finger to his chin, his eyes roaming the floor as if it would produce the answer. “No … I don’t.”
Katsuki sighs, places his hands on his hips, and looks to the ceiling. “Of course not. Fine then, maybe your dad recorded it.”
“What?”
Katsuki pulls the disc out of his pocket and sets it up on Deku’s desk. “We’re watching the rest of it.”
“What? No! Kacchan, I ca–”
“Shut it, shitty nerd.” Katsuki turns and plants himself beside Deku again. “We’re fucking watching the rest. So shut up.”
Katsuki hits play on the paused video.
“Then I’ll just have to protect you! You can be my sidekick, Izuku. I’ll make sure no one hurts you!” mini-Katsuki says again.
Hisashi started coughing a little louder, grabbing mini-Deku’s attention. Meanwhile, the camera is still facing Katsuki who takes off and starts swinging on some of the metal bars with the other kids.
Deku turns and follows him, but some of the kids are yelling. Hisashi zooms in with his camera to see two older kids, a brunette and the other a blue-haired boy, picking on Katsuki.
“You little pipsqueak can’t be better than All Might!”
“Yes I can!” Mini-Katsuki shouts back at the brunette.
The blue-haired kid laughed. “Oh yeah? With that kind of quirk, you’ll probably just blow yourself up!”
All of a sudden, mini-Deku rushes forward and punches the blue-haired kid right in the stomach. “Oh, shit!” Hisashi shouts and the camera shuts off.
Ironically, that happened to be the last video on the disc as it shuts off.
“I don’t understand,” Deku says.
“That day, I told you I would protect you and then you end up punching some dick in the gut. It pissed me off. I was the one with the quirk already, but you started diving in, trying to be some sort of hero. From that day, you never fucking stopped, either. Even when you didn’t get your quirk, even when I started pushing you away because of it and called you Deku, you never stopped trying to act like a hero.”
“That’s why you were mad at me?” Deku asks, looking up at Katsuki.
“Yeah, you dumbass. It felt like you were looking down on me, trying to prove that you were better than me,” Katsuki looked away.
“Kacchan, I’ve never thought that about you! Ever! I mean, if the past hour of watching baby videos proves anything, it’s that I’m always trying to be your friend.”
Katsuki looks back down at the greenette.
Deku reaches over and grabs the blonde’s hand, squeezing tightly. “I just wanted my friend back. I won’t say that I wish to go back in time and not punch that kid, because I wouldn’t ever trade sticking up for you. But I will say that I wish I could’ve stayed your friend. I would still very much like to have my friend back.”
Katsuki tried to get his hand back, but the greenette refused. “Deku, why would you want that? After everything I’ve done to you, said to you. I told you to go fucking kill yourself! Ugh! No! No, I can’t accept that. Not after that.” Katsuki stood up, trying to get away, but Deku was stubborn.
“Kacchan, I knew you didn’t mean it! I don’t know, maybe in your own way, you were just trying to look out for me, make sure I didn’t get hurt, and that’s why you got so mad when I was trying out for UA’s entrance exam. Besides, me fishing my notebook out of the water made me walk home later which resulted in me meeting All Might and getting his quirk.”
“That’s no excuse, Deku!”
“I don’t care! Yes, it fucking hurt–” Katsuki’s eyes widened at the swear. “I won’t lie about that, but I didn’t take it seriously because I knew you didn’t mean it! You just have a temper, Kacchan! I know you! I know you don’t mean half the shit you say. I know you actually like your friends. I know you go to bed early because you like to get up and train. I know you enjoy cooking for everyone. I know you like to make sure everyone is at their best and that’s why you’re still mad at Todoroki for not using his flames all the time. I know you like to interfere whenever Todoroki gets uncomfortable around his father. I know you call your mom a hag, but if she were to ask for help, you’d run over immediately. I know you learned to cook from your dad because you sometimes wished you were more like him. I know you, Kacchan. ”
Deku ends his little rant session by wrapping his arms around Katsuki in a hug that was tighter than before. Stunned, Katsuki just looks down at the head of curls resting on his chest, his arms hanging loosely at his sides. Deku looks up and meets Katsuki’s red eyes. “What was it your mom said? I’m the little Kats whisperer?”
Katsuki rolls his eyes and tries to shove Deku off of him with a laugh. “Shut up, Deku.”
Deku laughs, too, but keeps his grip firm. “Let’s just be friends again, Kacchan. That’s all I want.”
“I’ll just hurt you again.”
“You haven’t hurt me now,” Deku says. “You haven’t hurt me since I tried to save you from that sludge villain. I know we’re sort of rivals now, but we can be friends, too.”
Katsuki will deny this if you ask, but he hugs Deku back. “We’ll always be rivals, Deku.”
“So let’s be friends, too, Kacchan. We don’t have to be as close as we once were, but I’d like us to be closer than just rivals.”
“Whatever, Deku. We’ll be friends, but I’ll still kick your ass and be number one.”
Deku leans back and smiles wide at Katsuki, his eyes filling with tears.
“Oi! Stop crying so damn much!”
“I can’t help it! I’m just so happy! I get my Kacchan back!”
Katsuki rolls his eyes and pushes Deku off. Deku walks over to the disc and picks it up. “I’m gonna tell mom she can make copies.”
“Copies?! What the fuck? Why?”
Deku smirks. “She wanted to give one to your parents since you’re in it!”
“And have them fucking tease me about us? Hell no! Give it!” Katsuki lunged, but Deku dodged.
“Aww! Do you not want to marry me anymore, Kacchan?”
Katsuki chased him around the room until Deku tripped and fell on the floor. However, he pressed his hands to his chest and laid on them, making it even more difficult for Katsuki to grab the damned thing. “Shut up! You’re the one that started crying about it!”
“I was three!”
“So! I didn’t cry!”
“No, you were just ready to fight my mom about it!” Deku laughed.
Katsuki huffed and started tickling Deku’s ribs. “Give it!”
Deku was even more stubborn than he thought. “Never! I’m gonna play it at our wedding!”
“I never said I’d marry you!”
“Yes you did! We’re already heroes like All Might, Kacchan, now we just need to get married!”
Katsuki stopped tickling Deku, the tactic not even fucking working anyways. “You know what?” he asked, getting off the greenette. “Get it copied. That way I have proof that you’ve always been so fucking annoying.”
Deku turned around and sat up, grinning at the fake-angry blonde. “And I’ll have proof you love me!”
His hands started popping.
“I’m blowing it up.”
Chapter Text
It takes a special occasion to get the class 1-A students-turned-pro heroes together in the same room at the same time. Usually it was in regard to celebrating making it into the top ten hero ranking list–Katsuki had his own party when he broke #4, Shoji got his for #9, and Todoroki for getting #2; this time it had nothing to do with hero rankings.
This current celebration warranted all of class 1-A, most of 1-B, Aizawa, Present Mic, All Might, Nezu, Kota, Eri, Amajiki, Nejire, Togata, Shinso, Hatsume, Best Jeanist, Edgeshot, Recovery Girl, Gran Torino, and some parents to attend.
With the attendance of so many heroes in one place, it was bound to catch the media’s attention, but the heroes made sure that their bosses, or their sidekicks, or their assistants sent the reporters on a wild goose chase.
Kirishima, dressed in a black tuxedo with a red tie, grinned as he stood in the middle of a stage and tapped on a microphone. Standing next to him was Uraraka, wearing a blush-pink floral dress with a sweetheart neckline, also holding her own microphone. “Alright, alright! Do I have everyone’s attention?”
Whoops and hollers echoed throughout the room.
“Perfect! Ladies and gentlemen, you all know me as either Kirishima Eijirou or Red Riot, but today, you can just call me the best man!”
“And I’m Uraraka Ochaco, Uravity, also known as the maid of honor tonight!”
“I think I can speak for everyone here when I say: finally! ”
Mostly everyone laughed. Todoroki raised his glass and said, “Cheers to that!”
Uraraka chuckled. “And I think I can also speak for everyone when I say that there is no better representation of the word soulmates than Izuku and Katsuki. Whether they’re being romantic or platonic, you can always find them circling each other, pushing each other to be the very best versions of themselves.”
“Where one goes, the other usually follows,” Kirishima continued. “When sparring or working together, they don’t even have to communicate–they just simply know what to do, when, and how. When Katsuki was kidnapped, Izuku didn’t hesitate to join in on the rescue team.”
“I still think I should’ve expelled you all for that,” Aizawa said in the crowd.
“And when Izuku ran away, Katsuki was one of the first people to demand we get him back,” Uraraka said. “10 years ago, class 1-A had the pleasure of watching Izuku and Katsuki grow from childhood friends-turned-enemies into rivals, then friends again, and now partners.”
“I especially had the extra pleasure and privilege of listening to Katsuki pine over Izuku for years.” Kirishima grinned brightly. Katsuki’s eyes narrowed at him, a faint blush on his cheeks.
“Oh, I thought Izuku was the only one to do that?” Uraraka teased.
“Try being stuck in a work study with them for three years!” Todoroki called out.
Kirishima laughed. “So imagine my non-surprise when Katsuki decides to propose with a brand new suit he and the rest of us spent 8 years funding–all of which was his idea to make sure Izuku knew he could be a hero without a quirk.”
“And imagine my non-surprise when shortly after that, Izuku tracked me down after Todoroki’s ranking celebration to ask me to be his maid of honor, the wedding only six weeks later!”
“Now, there were a lot of us wanting to make toasts tonight, but we all had the great idea of making a collage of photos and videos throughout the years instead.”
Kirishima raised his glass, which everyone in the room copied. “They say you don’t marry the person you can live with, but the person you can’t live without. That sums up Izuku and Katsuki perfectly, if I do say so myself.”
Uraraka looked to be on the verge of tears. “Watching Izuku and Katsuki be together has renewed my faith in true love. I am honored to be a part of their wedding today.”
“Without further ado, let’s toast, drink, and watch Mina’s hard work in action!”
Everyone drank from their glass, and as Kirishima and Uraraka left the stage, a projector screen came down and the lights dimmed in the room.
Katsuki leaned back in his chair and draped an over the back of Izuku’s, his fingers lightly rubbing up and down the groom’s shoulder. Izuku leaned into the touch and wiped his face free of tears.
A familiar scene appeared on the screen: Izuku’s dad in the hospital as he makes the video disc for Izuku and Inko.
Inko wipes her face and nose with a tissue, Mitsuki rubbing her back.
Newborn baby photos of Katsuki and Izuku start flashing on the screen next and the voices of the blonde’s parents echoed in the speakers.
“I guess you could blame us for how inseparable the two boys were and are. Inko and Hisashi were in the delivery room with Masaru and I, and it was only fitting that I did the same.”
The birth video of Izuku popped up on screen, which caused Izuku to blush bright red and hide his face in his hands.
“The two of them never stood a chance. Even as they drifted apart over the years, they were still always one step behind the other,” Masaru said. “All we ever heard was ‘ Just keep your eyes on me! ’ and ‘ Kacchan’s amazing! ’ for years!”
The video of Masaru introducing baby Katsuki to newborn Izuku played with a background ‘echo’ of child Izuku saying, “Kacchan’s so amazing!” and then faded into the video of baby Katsuki crawling towards baby Izuku.
Inko’s voice came next.
“Izuku has always been an expressive boy, whether it was with his facial expressions or his actions. Raising Izuku, it was always easy to see how much he gravitated towards Katsuki–even without the outside help of us and the Bakugos. I see the same in Katsuki.”
The video of Izuku taking his first steps played.
“Katsuki always made sure Izuku was included. How he did it wasn’t always good , but he never stopped caring for my baby boy. With Katsuki, actions always spoke louder than words, and his actions showed that he never wanted to be without Izuku.”
A collage of photos and videos of baby Izuku and baby Katsuki cuddling and sleeping together appeared and the room filled with aww ’s.
Katsuki’s ears and cheeks were a bright pink and he squeezed Izuku’s shoulder. He leaned his head down and whispered in his ear, “I’m wishing more than ever that we just eloped like I wanted to.”
“Our parents would’ve never let us get away with that.”
Both males blushed at the photo of them in matching All Might onesies, hanging off each other’s shoulders with wide grins on their faces.
The next half hour was filled with their friends’ voices overlapping photos and videos taken of the boys during their time at UA and as adults.
“The first time young Midoriya and young Bakugo sparred without the unbridled anger, I knew that they’d make a fantastic hero duo. They have a chemistry between each other that takes most heroes decades to learn. With them, it was like instinct, natural, meant to be.”
Izuku groaned at the sight of the scrawny version of him crying and he side-eyed All Might for giving Mina that photo. Then there were photos of him and Katsuki in mid-spar, sitting in All Might’s office that was taken without them realizing as they had their heads bent together over a textbook, videos of them sparring together and separately–where one would narrate the other’s actions they’d be taking or how much the other was improving.
Aizawa spoke about how he was both surprised and not surprised to hear of their engagement. He had originally believed that they would just become really good friends. “Either way, I do hope you won’t become too much of a distraction to Midoriya’s students.”
Kota shouted, “Yeah! Stop showing up randomly throughout the day!” which caused everyone to chuckle loudly.
Hatsume’s speech was lively, detailing just how obsessive and nitpicky Katsuki was in the suit’s creation and design. “If I had known it was going to turn into an engagement ring, I would’ve done something to make it stand out more!”
Photos of Katsuki overlooking the schematics of the suit appeared and then a video of him almost getting knocked unconscious by the Blackwhip simulation.
The final video was the one where baby Izuku and baby Katsuki were upset about being told they couldn’t marry each other. This time, the couple didn’t look away or fight their friends to make the videos shut off.
“I love him, mommy! Why can’t I marry him?”
“Yeah! Why can’t I marry Izuku? I love him and wanna be with him forever! He’s my bestest friend in the whole world!”
“Boys, you can get married when you’re older. But not right now.”
“And you may not even want to marry each other. You may fall in love with someone else.”
“Never! Only Izuku! We’re gonna grow up and be heroes like All Might and get married!”
Cheers and whistles went around the room as the collage ended. Music, courtesy of Present Mic and Jiro, echoed throughout the speakers and the guests started rising from their chairs to host conversations or get on the dance floor. Izuku and Katsuki danced with their respective mothers, listening to them coo and tease them for being so oblivious towards their feelings for years, before they drifted back towards each other.
Die With A Smile by Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga played throughout the speakers, making Izuku and Katsuki roll their eyes at Jirou, who smirked back at them.
“This song kind of fits, though,” Katsuki said softly, smiling down at his husband. “You were all I could think about when I fought Shigaraki.”
“Kacchan,” Izuku started, biting his lip anxiously.
“Hush. I’m just saying that’s when I realized that I was in love with you. I’ve always had feelings for you, Izuku, but I didn’t realize just how deep and romantic they were until then.”
Izuku tilted his head. “Have I ever told you how Blackwhip manifested?”
Katsuki’s eyes widened. “No. Not fully, anyway.”
“Monoma was insulting you–”
Katsuki scoffed. “That’s nothing new.”
“Hey, he’s toned down!” Izuku giggled. “Anyways, he was insulting you and I got so angry. As soon as Shinsou brainwashed me, Daigoro told me that it activates based on my emotions, particularly ones from the heart. I didn’t understand it at the time, but during my solo period–”
“You mean your vigilante era?”
“ Solo period ,” Izuku reiterated. “I finally realized what it meant. I loved you and couldn’t stand anyone to insult or hurt you ever.”
Katsuki smirked and pressed a hand to Izuku’s cheek. “So possessive.”
“I like the word protective.”
“Whatever floats your boat, Deku. I still think you should join my agency, baby.”
Izuku turned his face to press a kiss to Katsuki’s palm. “I’ve already told you why I can’t, Kacchan. For one: I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from sacrificing myself for you over and over again. Two: I want to stay as a part-time teacher at UA and help the young heroes. And three: I like the idea of being a floater agent, going from one agency to the next when I’m needed.”
Katsuki bent down and pressed his forehead against Izuku’s, wrapping his arms tightly around his husband’s waist and pulling him in closer. He sighed. “I know. I don’t agree with it, but I can at least respect it.”
The song ended and Kaminari’s voice echoed throughout the speakers next, causing the crowd to look up at the electric blond. “Good evening, everyone! This is the part of the night where we ask the underage folks to head home and for the ones not up for drinking like there’s no tomorrow to follow them out the door! We are going to celebrate our favorite Blasty and Broccoli Lord’s marriage the right way! Forward march and here we go, members of the Agency Bakugo!”
“I think Pikachu’s already had one drink too many,” Katsuki snorted, watching as Kota, Eri, and a few of the older guests leave the reception.
Izuku giggled. “I love you, Midoriya-Bakugo Katsuki.”
“And I love you, Bakugo-Midoriya Izuku. Let’s drink!”
Notes:
I went back and forth writing this, changing the details and conversations and whatnot. I didn't want to change what happened in the manga too much, but I did not like the way Horikoshi ended the manga with that sad good-bye wave Katsuki gave Izuku. So I decided to interpret it this way! Hope you enjoyed it!
