Chapter Text

Ever since finding out Christmas was approaching on earth, the vibe in the castle had completely changed. Everyone seemed more relaxed and happy, the joy of the festivities taking up all the place in their hearts.

For the last few days, every second when the Galra weren't attacking them or some defenseless planet, they were decorating the castle-ship.

Garlands were put up on practically every wall, colourful lights around multiple doors. Lance had even found some kind of plant that weirdly resembled mistletoe to hang above the entrance to different rooms on the ship.

Keith secretly hoped he'd find himself under one of them with Pidge before they were taken down...

Her lips just looked so sof-

"Keith! Come out of here! I need your help with something that's super mega important now!!" Worried as to why the girl that was constantly on his mind sounded so urgent, Keith hurried to his door, opening it quickly. He was glad she seemed unharmed.

"Pidge, is something wrong?" As soon as she saw him, she immediately began walking toward the common room, knowing he would follow her. "Nothing bad, don't worry. I just need your help placing the last ornament on the tree. Everyone else was busy at the moment except you, so..."

Oh. "Of course I'll help."

The lounge had really become beautiful in just a few days. The look-alike Christmas tree making it even better to admire.

Obviously, not being able to find actual decorations, the team had to craft their own ornaments. After hanging their creations, they all felt like something was missing. Eventually, they realized they had forgotten to make a star for the top of the tree, but their trials had been... unsuccessful.

(Seriously, why did stars have to be so hard to handmake?)

But judging from the object Pidge had left on one of the couches when she went to fetch him, she had found an alternative solution.

"Look, I made this angel! My grandma had one that kinda looked like this one ever since I was a kid. Hers was way better quality..."

Keith smiled. "I think this is perfect."

Pidge stared at him for a moment, before rapidly turning to stare at the tree. "I need your help to place this. I'm not tall enough and I can't seem to find a ladder anywhere."

Keith went to stand next to her, quickly realizing this wasn't going to work. "Uhm, Pidge, I'm not tall enough, I'm not even sure Shiro would be able to reach this height. Maybe with a tiny bit of hel-"

"I know. That's why I need to sit on your shoulders, then we should be able to do it!"

Wait... What!?

Ok. OK. Keith just needed to relax and act nonchalantly. How hard could this be? Just act normally.

"I-I mean, why no- of course. Yeah... Yeah! I... I mean, no problem, for sure. Just be careful." Pidge laughed softly at his stuttering."Don't worry, you'll be there. I know that if I fall, you will catch me no problem, like always!" she exclaimed as she beamed at him.

After settling down on one knee next to a couch, Keith offered his hand to Pide, breathing slowly as she carefully placed herself on his shoulder. "You can get up now!"

As he slowly rose from the ground, his hands reached her thighs to steady her, noticing she froze for a few ticks. "Could you get close to the tree? Thanks."

As Keith waited until Pidge was done, he observed his reflection in a silver ornament, not surprised to see his cheeks were a bit red.

Unfortunately, Pidge was done pretty fast, satisfied with the result. All done, you can put me down!" He obliged.

They stepped a few feet away in front of the Christmas tree. "Yep, looks perfect up there! Don't you think it's pretty?"

It took some time before she got any kind of answer from her teammate. "Yeah, it is... Mhm... I think you'd make a prettier angel, but this will do just fine. You're better at crafting things like that than I thought... You really are amazing..." Keith said, as if he was lost in thought or speaking to himself.

After a few ticks of complete silence, the red paladin began wondering why Pidge hadn't said anything. It took him some time to figure out why she refused to look in his direction and why, judging from the parts of her face he could see, her cheeks were so red.

Quiznak.

"Huhhh... I... sorry. I didn't want to make you uncomfortable..."

He heard the girl clear her throat. "No- No. It's fine. Thanks for the compliment, I guess"

Before he could add something else, Lance barged in. "Hey guys, what are you- Wow, did you make that Pidge, 'cause there's no way Keith did! Looks good!" When he didn't get any kind of reaction, the blue paladin observed his teammate. "Huh... Did I interrupt something, or..."

"Nop! We were done here anyway, I gotta go... umm... science! Yep. Bye nerds!"

And just like that, she was gone, leaving him perplexed. He had really messed up, hadn't he?

"So..." Lance began.

"No."

*******

Later that day, Keith was walking back from the training room when he saw Pidge silently standing in the doorway of the lounge, silently staring ahead.

Intrigued, Keith walked up to her. "What caught your attention this time?" He was certain she hadn't heard him until she actually chose to respond. "The tree, I'm just pretty proud of how it looks."

Keith relaxed, at least she wasn't ignoring him after earlier...

"Oh yeah, your angel really added a nice finishing touch."

As he contemplated what he could say to make the situation less awkward, Pidge saw something.

"Oh!"

Before he could even question what she had noticed, the red paladin felt a gentle tap on his cheek, making him turn his head in her direction.

She kissed him.

Well, not on the mouth, but at the corner of it, so close enough.

Keith blinked as he stared wide-eyed wordlessly, his mouth agape. When she realized he wasn't going to say anything, Pidge pointed upward, uttering one word.

"Mistletoe."

Oh, again. "Ah, right."

Her brows furrowed, she he was one of her machines she was struggling to understand, as the maintained eye contact, Keith wasn't sure what to expect once her facial features softened once more.

"If you're lucky, next time I won't miss... Bye bye!"

And just like that, she was gone (again), this time, leaving him a blushing mess.

Did she this mean he had. A chance with her after all?

Chapter Text

It's not like Keith had anything against the Holts, judging from what Shiro had told him, they were an extremely nice and intelligent family. Apparently, the dad was even working at NASA, they were attempting to send a person to the moon.

All he wanted was to play with the train model he had received from his adoptive parents; unfortunately, he was forced to join his family.

He knew Shiro and Matt met at their high school and soon, even their parents had become great friends.

Which explained why they were spending the night of the 25th at the Holt's residence.

It only took a few seconds after knocking on the door before a guy, not as tall as Shiro, who was pretty skinny with fluffy hair and nerdy glass, answered the door.

"Matt! Thank you again for the invitation!" exclaimed Shiro, giving his friend a pat on the back. "It's no problem! Come inside, it's quite cold tonight. Welcome Mr. and Mrs.Shirogane- Oh, you must be Keith, right? Your brother is always talking about you!"

Not being the social type like the two older boys, Keith only muttered a small, "Hi." in return.

Before he could even take off his coat, a woman, who looked to be in her late forties, appeared from what was assumed was the kitchen, wearing an apron with gingerbread men plastered all over the red and green tissue.

"Welcome, how are you tonight!"

Was everyone in this family that energetic?

She approached Shiro, giving him a tight hug and kissed his cheek, as if he was her son. After that, she kindly greeted his father and soon, both were women enthusiastically rambling about things he didn't really care about.

"-and you won't believe what I saw at the market yest- Oh! You're Shiro's younger brother, aren't you?"

Like mother, like son.

"Yes, Ma'am." She chuckled warmly, ruffling his hair softly. "What a well-mannered boy. No need to be so formal with me, you can call me Colleen... umm" "Keith." "Ah yes, Keith."

She then guided them into the living room, which was well decorated, like the front of their house. The Christmas tree had a lot of different ornaments and shiny lights on it. Four socks were hung above the chimney, red and green pillows were on the couches with a big warm looking blanket as well. On a wood table, a vinyl player was placed next to a bookshelf filled with many, many books and vinyl at the bottom.

They had a very welcoming home.

A young girl, maybe four years younger than him, was seated on a rug, her attention entirely on the small robot she was guiding with a controller. It seemed she hadn't noticed their presence at all.

Or, she willingly chose to ignore them. That's probably what he would have done in that situation.

"Katie, would you be so kind as to at least greet our guests, please?" Coming from upstairs was a man who looked a bit older than Mrs. H- Colleen, he also looked like a really nice person.

"I hope the drive here wasn't too troubling, with all the snow we got in the past week! Going to work has definitely been a hazard!" His dad laughed. "No, not at all Sam! Though, I think we can expect more snow tonight, it has been falling since this morning!"

Mr. Holt, or Sam approached where his daughter was still sitting silently, ruffling her already slightly messy hair. (This family really was alike.)

It seemed she understood what he was telling her to do.

"Hi."

She finally turned around in the direction and Keith felt his cheek heat up.

He took a second to observe her. She was wearing a dress, but because of her position, he couldn't tell how long it was. It was mostly green with white puffy sleeves and a lace of the same color at the bottom of the skirt of the dress, with a red bow tied around her waist and another one in her hair.

She looked like the girl version of Matt, except with bigger eyes, more feminine face features with small freckles and way tinier.

Also, she was way cuter than her brother.

The young boy wasn't even sure she saw him, standing there awkwardly. Her short moment of attention had only been directed at his parents.

"Come on Katie! Why are you treating me like another stranger!?"Shiro casually approached her, settling on his knee next to her legs and pinched her cheek, which earned him a flare from the girls and a chuckle from everyone else.

"Only because of this, you no longer deserve a welcome from me." She crossed her arms and batted his hand away.

"Whatever you say, Katie-kat," he replied with a smile. "Keith, come over here. I'm sure the two of you will get along well. Katie may be younger than you, but her brain is ahead of the other ten years old." So this entire family were geniuses- and wait what?

Ten! That meant she was two years younger! She looks so much younger than that... Someone wasn't growing at a rapid pace...

Finally, her haze moved in his direction. And no, the fact that she seemed pretty uninterested in making his acquaintance didn't bother him in the slightest.

(The way her eyes reflected the lights coming from the fireplace made them look even more beautiful, like a summer sunset.)

When both children stayed silent, Sam interjected, "Well, pleasure to meet you, Keith! I heard you were a lover of chocolate, huh?" He shyly nodded. "So is Katie! I'm certain you will both adore tonight's desert! Sweetheart, why don't you show him how your robot works while the adults go talk?"

And with that, they were left alone in the living room, Christmas music being the only sound that could be heard.

Usually, Keith would be quite content with this, he hated meeting new people. But there was... something about her.

"So... you like robots?" Her response was quick. "Obviously. Do you have a problem with that? It must be because I am a girl, isn't it? For your in-"

"No! Not at all, I promise! I think it's interesting. Good interesting!" Keith quickly said, not wanting to leave a bad first impression.

She frowned at him for a moment before her face relaxed as she nodded. "Would you like to try it?" She extended the controller in his direction. "Could you show me how? I'm not really familiar."

By the time Shiro and Matt came to tell them the dinner was served, both children were animatedly laughing together.

Once they ran toward the dining room, the older brothers exchanged a proud grin.

Their plan had worked wonderfully.

Notes:

At the end I wanted Shiro and Matt to high-five only to find out it was apparently invented in like 1977, so…

I tried to make so research to make it accurate, but I can’t say how well I did. It was my first time writing something set in the past so I hope it wasn’t too bad!

Chapter Text

She was so tired. Work had been exhausting lately, Katie had so much to take care of on a daily basis.

You would think, after saving the entire universe, nothing could be harder than that and yet, here she was. Her head resting on a table in her Garrison issued lab.

She was so focused on trying to calm down her throbbing brain that she didn't hear someone come in or approach her.

"Hey there, doing okay?" It was Matt's voice.

"Yeah, just... I don't know..."she replied, her voice barely audible.

Her brother pulled a chair next to her, his hand immediately going to her back affectionately. "You should call it a day and go home. Want me to drive you?"

Slowly, she stood up, cringing at the weird sensation she felt in her limbs. "No, it's fine. I-" As Katie tried walking out, she almost fell to the ground because of her wobbly legs. Thankfully, Matt was right at her side to catch her. "Yeah, I'm driving you."

The former green paladin doesn't remember much from then. Only strong arms carrying her out of her brother's car, Matt and the person talking a bit and eventually, she was in her comfy bed, as a gentle kiss was placed on her forehead.

*******

Keith had noticed something wasn't right with her a few days ago. But every time he tried bringing it up, Katie would just say it was nothing.

Receiving a call from Matt saying he'd be at their place soon and that Keith would need to bring her inside really made him worry.

Now, as he lay next to his girlfriend's sleeping form, he knew he had to intervene.

Whether she liked it or not.

Keith knew that when something was really bugging her, his lover tended to overwork herself.

What could be the reason this time?

Figuring she was probably going to sleep during most of the day, Keith thought he could plan a nice gesture that would encourage her to open up.

Or at least, put a smile on her gorgeous face.

*******

Katie's eyes slowly opened and she soon regretted her decision when she could practically feel her heartbeat behind them.

She tried to fall back asleep, but the woman couldn't.

She was so thirsty.

Carefully, she stood up and began dragging her feet toward the stairs. Instantly, she smelled something good.

Before she could even make it all the way down, Keith suddenly appeared in front of her.

"Hey, you're finally awake. How are you feeling?"

She was so grateful he spoke quietly.

In an instant, he was at her side, his hand on her forehead. "I'm thirsty."

He turned her around. "Go sit back on the bed. I'm going to bring you water, pills and I'll go run you a warm bath. Don't worry that pretty head of yours, I'll take care of everything."

He gently pushed her forward until he was certain she could climb the stairs by herself.

A few minutes later, he was in their room, handing her a glass then some medicine, leaving only after he saw her swallow them.

Not long after, he was back, helping her up and guiding her toward their bathroom. Katie inhaled deeply, the smell of the pomegranate bubble bath relaxing her. "What ar-" "Hold on a sec, I'll be back."

She only had time to blink in confusion a few times before Keith was standing in front of her once more, a pair of comfy pyjamas, a towel and her phone in his hands.

Wordlessly, he helped her out of her clothes and held her arm as she entered the water.

"What are you doing in th-"

"Text me if you need anything else. Love you!"

Guess she was finding out later.

******

Eventually, Katie was feeling a lot better and more relaxed. So, she chose to carefully step out of the bath and dressed herself.

Still hearing Keith move around downstairs, she figured she had some time to dry her hair.

The woman had no idea for how long she stood there in front of the mirror before she heard three knocks on the bathroom door. "You can come in!"

Keith peeked his head inside, smiling when he saw that his girlfriend had recovered some of her colours.

"Hey there, I have a surprise for you. Hungry?"

"Really," Katie said as she hugged him tightly. "You take such good care of me. What did I ever do to deserve you?"

He chuckled, stroking her hair. "Nothing except being the amazing person you are."

Keith took her hand and led her downstairs, covering her eyes at the bottom of the stairs as he maneuvered them in the direction of the dining room.

"Okay, ready? In three, two... one!"

The former paladin removed his hands from her eyes and observed his girlfriend as she took in her environment.

By this hour, the sun had already set down since they were in December and Katie had slept for practically the entire day. Instead of choosing to use a big light to illuminate up the room, Keith had opted for tons of candles.

"Oh, Keith..."

Katie now knew where the wonderful smell had come from, no wonder she thought it was familiar. He had cooked a minestrone the way her grandmother taught her mom, who then showed her how and gave her permission to teach it to Keith.

She had always loved to eat this when she was feeling a bit under the weather.

"I... You..."

He placed his hands on her shoulder and directed her toward her chair, pulling it away from the table for her and waited until she was seated to push it back into place.

"Wait until you see the desert."

Katie didn't care that she was dressed in a rather ugly warm Christmas themed pyjamas. Nor did Keith care that he had forgotten to wear an apron and dirtied his shirt, it was old anyway, like the sweatpants he wore.

The two talked and laughed all night and eventually chose to sit cuddled next to each other on the couch, eating homemade chocolate fondant as they watched the snow fall from the sky in the comfort of their home.

"Katie, when something is bothering you, just know that I'll always be there for you. I hate to see you so exhausted," Keith declared after a long time of silence.

"I know, I promise to share more with you. I just have some trouble managing my work schedule. And the same goes for you, I'll always be the shoulder you can lean on. I love you so much."

The light of the scented candle reflected on their face as they kissed.

"I love you too, with all my heart."

Chapter Text

This was going to be their first Christmas, since they had come back to earth.

Lance had out it upon himself to organize a huge party at the Garrison for everyone to enjoy. Allura and Coran immediately offered their help, wanting to find out more about this popular earthling holiday, as they liked to call it.

On their side, Hunk was in charge of planning the menu for the night with Shiro, who wished to help him.

Her and Matt had set up a firework show, which maybe wasn't the safest thing to do in their backyard, but she didn't care. Even if Katie did like Christmas, she tried to stay away from the Garrison for the time being.

A part of her was still mad that they had lied about her family... Maybe she was being petty, but after talking with Keith one of the many times he came to visit the Holt siblings as they worked, he felt the same.

So, when Matt was busy with something else, they stayed at Keith's dad's old shack, which they had renovated together.

Her parents weren't there to ask about what she wanted to do from now on. She knew they hoped she would start to work at the Garrison more than ever, since Iverson had offered a job, but she still hesitated.

Meanwhile Keith didn't have to try his hardest to hide from Kolivan and his mom, who wanted him to choose if he'd go back to space with the Blades. It's not that he didn't want to help people anymore, he just... had no idea what he wanted to do...

"Keith, by chance, do you know if your dad had any holiday movies we could watch tonight?" Pidge asked, as she waited for the popcorn to be ready.

He thought for a moment before shrugging. "I'm not sure, let me go check."

Not long after, the former black paladin was back with a DVD. "I found this one. The description says it's about kids who built a snow fort and had a snowball fight during their Christmas break. I guess it could be interesting..."

Pidge took the box in her hands. "The dog who stopped the war, kinda a weird title. I never heard of this before..."

She inserted it inside the disc player and sat down next to Keith, who had already settled down comfortably on the couch, leaving a small gap between the two of them as she hit the play button.

They never crossed that invisible line. Scared that if they did, they would have to sort out the unknown feeling inside their hearts that appeared whenever they were together.

The resume was pretty much on point. A bunch of children who live in a small town in Canada decided to start "war" that would last two weeks and separated into two teams.

One of them managed to build a giant snow castle, while the other used an old shack as a hideout. It was in even worse condition than Keith's dad's pre-repairs.

It was honestly pretty entertaining to watch, they filled snowballs with paint, had arguments like children would and a romance developed between a guy and the new girl in town.

It was actually pretty cute. Until the end...

"Why did it have to end like that?! Why did they have to make it so sad?!" exclaimed Pidge, staring at the screen as the end credits rolled while an emotional song played.

"I have no idea," replied Keith, his arm unconsciously resting around the girl's shoulders for some time now. "-but if this happened to Kosmo, I would be devastated forever."

Pidge leaned her head on him. "As a kid, I would have been inconsolable if this were Bae Bae's fate. Same for Matt."

Once the TV showed the homescreen of the film once more, Pidge turned to look at her former teammate. "Why would you not tell me this was going to completely ruin my mood? How dare you, I trusted you..." she said jokingly.

Keith rolled his eyes, a fake hurt look displayed on his face. "How dare I? It was my first time watching this as well, missy." He pointed in her direction, hitting her nose with the tip of his index, holding in a laugh as she dramatically fell backward on the couch, laying her legs on his lap.

"You have broken my fragile heart!" "Oh my, how may I ever repent for my sin?!"

Both stared at each other before exploding in giggles.

It was only after they calmed down a few seconds later when Pidge sat up -her legs still on Keith's lap- that they realized how close they were.

However, neither of them tried to get away from this current proximity.

They saw the hesitation in the other's eyes, but the desire shone even more brightly.

Keith's hand reached for her cheek, caressing it slowly, smiling when she tilted her head even more in his hold. She closed her eyes peacefully.

Slowly, he moved her even closer with his arm around her waist until she was practically on his lap.

"Katie..."

He looked down, trying to find the right words he couldn't seem capable of uttering for her to hear.

This time, she was the one to grab his face in her calloused hand from the war.

She nodded reassuringly.

They both closed the distance. Letting themself relax upon feeling the soft pressure of the other's lips on theirs.

The thought of what they wanted their lives to be like, from now on, was no longer on their minds.

Not caring what their family questions.

Their responsibilities.

The constant nightmares that plagued their every thought for having to go through so much at such a young age.

What this meant for their relationship.

Only them, all alone in this dark room.

In this moment.

They could figure something out after the party, when everyone would try to go back to their old life or chose to build a new one.

Together.

Notes:

I actually had to search if this movie was translated in English and I ended up finding it on YouTube. Where I’m from, this is like a classic, my teachers would always play it in primary school and the students who had dog would always end up crying.

Btw, the title of the fanfic is the name of THE song of this movie.

Chapter 5: Lights out

Summary:

Day 5: Takeout

***

It would have been a perfect way to start the weekend, if it wasn't for that stupid power outage.

Notes:

Short but sweet!

Sorry if there's any mistakes <3

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

It had been such a long and cold day.

Between the problems Katie encountered in her lab and the difficulties Keith had with his students at the Garrison, the couple wanted nothing more than to relax at home.

Neither of them really felt like cooking and chose to make an already-made chicken noodle soup that only needed to be heated up on the stove.

Maybe they could also make some hot chocolate for when they would watch a movie like every friday night.

It would have been a perfect way to start the weekend, if it wasn't for that stupid power outage.

"So... what do we do now?" asked Keith. "Not gonna lie, I'm kinda hungry."

Katie reached for a kitchen drawer full of pamphlets, rummaging around before finding the one she was searching for. "Takeout?"

Keith took the paper in his hand. "Couldn't we go to the same pizza place as last time? It was pretty good," he said, eyeing the menu of the burger restaurant. "It's kinda close by, so I doubt they still have energy. But this place is far enough to still have power."

"You think they are doing delivery right now?" Katie looked outside the window. "Yeah, the weather looks shitty, but not enough for them to shut down the service."

"Alright, let's call."

*******

About 35 minutes later, the couple were sitting down in their living room next to each other on the couch. They had lit up some candles and found flashlights lying around their house.

"I'm cold," complained Katie after a few minutes of eating in silence.

Keith turned to observe his girlfriend before chuckling. "You have like three layers on, without counting the tick blanket around your shoulder."

She took another bite out of her cheeseburger, slowly shaking her head in disapproval. "Keith, Keith, Keith... You run hot, I, however, do not. You have no right to judge me."

He raised his hands in the air in surrender. "Alright, alright. My apologies."

*******

As soon as the lovers were done eating, Katie plastered herself to Keith's side, still wrapped in the warm cover, resting her head on his shoulder while his arms were around her waist.

They basked in silence, like they usually liked to do ever since their days as the paladins of Voltron.

When they first started dating, people often doubted how long their relationship would last because of how "awkward" they were around each other.

They never once thought they were.

Both really enjoyed sitting quietly together and honestly, they preferred to talk when they were alone anyway.

Maybe in the eyes of the people around them, their love story was advancing slowly, but in reality, it was going pretty fast.

It was only about forty minutes later when they realized the power was probably not going to come back tonight. Plus, their eyelids were becoming so heavy that they chose to go upstairs in their bedroom and call it a night.

Keith was lying down on their bed, Katie half on top of him, her face buried in his neck, one leg thrown over his hip while he stroked her back.

Katie was seconds away from falling asleep as she listened to her boyfriend breathing when the lights suddenly came back.

"Urgh! Go close the lights, I'm too lazy to get up."

Keith rubbed his eyes until he could completely open them without them burning. "You're the one on top of me, I can't really move, even if I wanted to."

She ignored him for a moment, trying to hide more in his neck, but there was still a little ray of light that managed to make it to her tired eyes.

She mustered all of her strength and rolled off him. "There, you're free," she mumbled.

The former black paladin laughed at her laziness and slowly stood up and walked over to the light switch. "I'll go turn off the others in the house. Be right back." Katie hummed in response.

When he came back, Keith smiled at the sight in front of him. His lover was fast asleep, breathing gently, her face completely relaxed. No sign of her exhaustion over the last few days at work visible.

Without trying to move too much, he lied down once more and brought her toward his body, his arms tight around her as she buried her face in his chest.

Before finally signing off for the day, Keith pushed her bangs away from her face and placed a soft kiss on her forehead.

"Goodnight, Katie."

Pidge stared at the inside of her locker quizzically. How could this have gotten here?

She definitely wasn't the one who placed them there. Yes, sometimes she was tired when she came to school from pulling an all-nighter, but never enough to forget about this.

The girl was also careful to never give anyone her padlock code, not even to her friends or brother.

Plus, the only place where it was written was inside her note app on her phone, which was also locked, in case she forgot what it was.

So who on earth could have done this?

Who was the one to put a bouquet of flowers in her school locker?

"Pidge, is everything alright? You seem lost in thoughts over here."

She barely acknowledged her friend, simply shrugging, her gaze still fixed on her... surprise. Irritated that she wasn't getting any verbal answer, Allura walked behind the shorter girl, her eyes widening.

"Oh my! Those are lovely! And judging from your perplexed depression, you're trying to figure out how they arrived there..."

Pidge turned to look at her friend. "I just don't understand why someone would bother themself to do this... Could it be some kind of prank?"

Immediately, Allura began giggling excitedly, gripping Pidge's shoulder and shaking them. "Dear don't tell me you're that obvious! You-" she poked Pidge's face with her finger, "have a secret admirer! This is so fun! Did they leave a note?!"

Allura began ruffling through her friend's locker, disappointed when she found nothing. "Hey girls, watcha doing?"

Pidge instantly began walking away, ignoring her other friends who were approaching. "Hey!" Lance exclaimed. "Where are you going, Pidgeon?!"

"I'm gonna go ask for another lock!" she shouted.

As she kept moving forward, she heard Lance and Hunk scream. "Wait... WHAT!?" Well, it wasn't like she expected Allura to keep what she found a secret anyway...

As she rounded the corner of the busy hall, she caught Keith looking at her with an unreadable expression. He wasted no time turning away when her eyes found his.

Weird. She hopes he didn't see the blush on her cheek.

*******

It didn't stop after the first time. On the contrary, she kept receiving flowers after flowers.

In her desk in classes, in her backpack, hell, she even found some right outside of her window... Her bedroom is on the godman second floor!

This "secret admirer" knows her pad lock code AND her home address. Had they hacked the private information the school kept on the students?

Who else would do that except her?

Could she have a stalker...

Worry began hunting her every thought, so much that she ended up going to see Allura, who wasn't aware that she never stopped receiving flowers.

"Okay, so, first of all, how could you not tell me sooner!?"

Pidge groaned, burying her face in her hands. "I didn't want you to make a big deal out of this!"

"Well, it is! This person knows where you live, Pidge! What if... have you told your parents yet?"

"No, I-"

"Ohhhh, what did our little nerd do this time that could get her in trouble with her parents?"

Urgh, now? Really?

Lance, Hunk and Keith sat down next to them at their usual lunch table, all looking at her. Should she tell them? At this point, they probably wouldn't tease her, but-

"It appears that Pidge has a stalker!" And, of course, Allura told them.

"WHAT!?"

"Are you alright!?"

"Since when? Why didn't you tell us?"

The worry in Keith's voice and the concern on his face brought a weird sensation in the girl's stomach. No, not right now.

"Well... I don't know for sure if it's really a stalker..."

"How can you possibly still be wondering that? That person knows where you live!" Allura exclaimed, starting another round of questions from her friends.

"I just learned that too. Apparently, it's from the same individual who left flowers in her locker not so long ago. Now, they're even leaving some at her house!"

Allura, Lance and Hunk began talking on their side about how they could uncover the stalker's identity as Pidge stared at them, not knowing what to say.

Keith stayed silent the entire time.

*******

Later that night, the short girl was watching TV in her living room when she heard someone knock on the front door. She knew it couldn't be Matt, since he was sleeping at Shiro's place and her parents were at some work event that would end in the early hours of the morning.

Slowly, she approached the door and peeked into the peephole, surprised to see Keith standing there, his arms behind his back. The girl hurriedly opened the door. "Keith, what are you doing here? Come inside, it’s cold tonight."

He smiled kindly at her, but once he was inside, he made no move to take off his boots and his coat, his arms immobile.

"Is everything alright? It's pretty late, did something happen?"

He chuckled, shaking his head. "No, nothing, don't worry. I just... I wanted to apologize."

Huh?

"Why would you need to do that? I'm not mad at you, I swear! Sorry if I gave you this impression, I wasn't aw-"

"I'm just so sorry. I guess I didn't really think this through. Of course it was going to come off as creepy, you didn't know... which was, in a way, the point, but still. It's just-"

"Keith, stop rambling, that's my job. What are you talking about? I'm super lost right now."

The boy took a long breath and finally revealed what he had been hiding in his hands.

A beautiful bouquet of poinsettia.

Exactly like the ones she had been receiving.

Wait... it could be that...

"It was you! Why!?" What!?"

"I thought you'd catch on fast. Afterall, I was sure I was the only one you gave your lock code to because of that time you texted it to me so that I could borrow your calculator for my exam-"

Oh, she had completely forgotten about that...

"You also once told me that poinsettia was your favorite flower and said you always hoped someone would gift them to you."

This still made no sense to the girl.

"Stop, just stop. I still don't understand why you went through all this effort? Why didn’t you just hand them to me?"

Keith furrowed his eyebrows before he finally understood. "You really are obvious Katie."

"Huh?" Her cheeks reddened.

"I was scared that if I did that, you'd think I have a crush on you."

Oh...

"Which is true, but-"

Oh!

"- I was worried you'd reject me. I'm really sorry, I'm awful at those kinds of things. I completely understand if you never want to speak to m-"

Before he could finish, Pidge engulfed Keith in a tight hug, wrapping her arms around his neck, as his wasted no time in going around her waist to stabilize them, flowers still in hands. With their height difference, she was barely touching the floor.

"Keith, you're kidding! I've had a crush on you for some time now. Don't worry, I forgive you for one condition."

He buried his face in her hair, she was so warm and he had stood outside for a while, debating if he should knock or not.

"Anything you want."

She looked at him expectantly, smiling shyly. What could she- Ah, of course.

"Katie Holt, would you be my girlfriend?"

"Of course you dummy!"

She took the flowers from his hold and walked upstairs as he hurriedly took off his winter wear.

When he reached her room, he was surprised to find a big vase full of flowers, his flowers. "You kept them all?"

"Duh, they are my favorite after all..."

Keith approached her from behind, surrounding his arms around her shoulders, relaxing when he felt her lean backward on him and deposing a soft kiss on her head.

"I'm sorry, really."

Pidge placed her hand on top of his. "You have a lot of time to make it up to me. By the way, where did you get all of those? Did it cost you a lot of money? How much?"

"This doesn't matter."

She pouted at the lack of answers. "You still have more?" Keith smirked. "Guess you’ll have to stick around to find out."

Chapter Text

Keith woke up with a massive headache.

His first thought was to panic, did he hurt himself while on a mission?

No, it couldn't be, he seemed to be lying down on something rather soft, not one of the medical bay uncomfortable beds.

Even if it was making his head throb more, the black paladin forced his eyes open.

He was in his room.

He also wasn't alone...

A smaller body was curled up against him while one of his arms was wrapped possessively around that person's waist.

Keith had yet to look at who was lying so close next to him for one simple reason.

He wasn't wearing any clothes, and by the feeling of it, neither were they. Well, neither was she, judging from the shape of her waist and her breast pressed to his side.

He blinked a few times, hoping it would miraculously make his headache disappear and force his brain to work once more.

Yeah, nothing happened.

Though he was able to realize another thing, she was definitely on the short side, even for a woman.

It couldn't be...

She was the only option. For what he could recall, the party they had organized in the castle was full of aliens and this woman had a very human shape.

Could his drunken mind really have mustered up the courage to pursue the girl he had admitted to himself to have a crush on her two years ago?

Well, probably for longer than that, but he wasn't willing to acknowledge that just yet.

Worst of all, he could barely remember anything.

Not being able to take the suspense for another tick, Keith looked down and, of course, a sea of auburn hair stared back at him. It was longer than when they first met, but still shorter compared to the picture from the day half of her family left for Kerberos.

Mindlessly, he brought one of his hands to her head, slowly stroking her hair before pushing it out of the way to see her peaceful sleeping expression.

He hoped this meant more to her than a drunken hookup, a mistake.

It certainly did for him.

Keith doesn't know for how long he stayed there, admiring the freckles on her cheeks, or simply staring at the ceiling or the clothes carelessly thrown on his floor before he felt her stir.

That's when Keith really started to panic.

How was she going to react? Would she be weirded out that he stayed there all this time? Would she think this made him a creep? Did people wait until the other woke up in that kind of situation?

Would she tell him she loved him?

Would he?

Her face scrunched up before she groaned, moving a bit before she turned to bury her face in his neck, yawing in the process.

This was pure torture, having to wait to see if he was going to be rejected or not.

She didn't move for another few ticks, her breathing slowing down made Keith think she was falling back into a deep slumber.

Oh no, this was way more than he could handle.

"Pi- Katie, psst, wake up." Keith's hand stroked her back gently as he hoped she couldn't hear the anxiety in his voice.

"Mnn, five more movements... 'M too tired..."

So far, so good. He hadn't been stabbed, yet.

"Please," he begged.

Suddenly, he felt her freeze and neither dared to speak up for a while.

"Morning Keith," she muttered. It took him some time to register what she had said, since her face was still hiding in his neck.

"Morning, how are you feeling?"

...

Why did she have to keep him waiting like that!?

"My head hurts," she complained as she stretched her legs and ended up leaving it where it lay over his hip. "- and I feel sore. Otherwise, fine I guess. You?"

"Same, my head is making me uncomfortable," he replied awkwardly. "Probably shouldn't have drunk this much, lesson learned." They both laughed, feeling the tension leave their bodies.

"How were we supposed to know the "eggnog" Hunk made using space ingredients was going to have some much alcohol?" Keith said, his heart beating rapidly. "I'm not even sure Hunk knew. I bet it's Lance's doing," Pidge murmured as her mind slowly relaxed.

Finally, she looked at him in the eyes, and- God- they were just so beautiful. And her expression, the slight shy -unlike her usual one- smile, paired with her red cheeks.

"You're perfect."

Keith definitely caught Pidge off guard if how she basically jumped away from him, clutching the sheets to her bare body, was anything to go by.

"I- Umm... thanks... You too?" Keith laughed, reassured to see she wasn't completely running away from him. "Don't make fun of me! That statement came out of nowhere!"

The black paladin looked around his room incredulously before laying his eyes back on the girl in his bed. "Out of nowhere, really? I-"

Her gaze was suddenly fixated on him almost... expectant. And Keith really hoped he wasn't about to mess everything up.

"I meant what I said, I swear. I'm not just telling you this because of what clearly happened last night. I always thought you were amazing... I guess my drunk self is better at expressing his feelings than I am." The man turned his head and shut his eyes, not wanting to see what kind of reaction he'd receive.

"Keith..." He heard her shuffle closer before she grabbed both of his cheeks, making him face her.

That's when he felt her lips against his.

As if she'd just freed him from a spell, blurry memories came flooding his mind. Them stumbling in his room as they passionately kissed. Her laugh when he tried to figure out the dress Allura had made her wear to gain access to more of her skin. Him lying on his bed, staring up at her as his hands rested on her thighs while she slowly unbuttoned his shirt.

The way his name sounded on her lips as she gripped his shoulder tightly.

Separating, Keith opened his eyes. "I love you, Katie."

She smiled brightly. "I love you too, Keith."

They wasted no time to start another round of kisses, as they forgot once more their duties that awaited them on the other side of his door...

What kind of reaction their friends would have...

How they would figure out how to be paladins and lovers without messing everything up...

Only them, in the moment.

Maybe Hunk (and Lance) deserved a thank you.

Chapter Text

As soon as the holidays had begun approaching, the other paladins all agreed it would be weird to celebrate the new year and Christmas on earth.

Keith had the same feeling.

However, compared to them, it wasn't because it had been so long since he had spent it with his family. It was because he only knew of the way they did in space.

So, for Pidge, Lance, Hunk and Shiro, who were used to celebrating with a big family compared to Keith, who only did it with them and the Alteans, this was strange.

Keith felt so out of place amongst those who fought in the war, Garrison employees and their families, he wanted this to end soon.

Maybe his opinion would be different if he had the chance to talk with a certain someone.

When he saw her arrive in a red and green dress with gold jewelry, his breath was taken away from his body without his consent.

Unfortunately for him, Pidge's mother had grabbed her arm and led her away instantly to introduce her to some people. No doubt trying to set her up with one of them.

Keith had long since understood that he tended to be a rather jealous person, what had taken more time was acknowledging why this ugly emotion resurfaced more often when the green paladin was involved. He had always thought she had a certain charm that he couldn't explain why it drew him in so much.

Until he looked at her one day and everything suddenly made sense.

But after mopping in his corner for most of the night, he had found an opening.

He could see that Colleen and Krolia were talking together, which meant that Pidge was finally alone.

Or so he believed.

The former black paladin immediately spotted her surrounded by three random guys who were clearly struggling to keep her attention on them as she looked around bored.

Amateurs.

When they made eye contact, her face lit up as his heart melted.

She didn't waste a second dismissing those nobodies with a short, almost nonexistent, goodbye and made her way toward him.

They met in the middle, both smiling.

"Wanna go outside?" she asked him.

And Keith forgot how to say no.

*******

The party was held in a pretty beautiful place that had a wonderful garden where they sat on a bench. They listened to people talk inside as music played when a song he was unfamiliar with started to play.

Pidge, however, stood up abruptly and extended her hand in his direction.

Keith raised an eyebrow in question, but took her hand regardless, letting her guide him to a more open and vast of the garden.

"It's soon midnight."

She took one of his hands in hers and placed the other on his shoulder, waiting until he moved his free one on her waist. "Auld Lang Syne, a song to welcome the new year. That's what's playing."

Keith smiled. "You really know everything, don't you?"

The girl simply shrugged. "A lot of people know about this. And, if I were you, I'd be careful with my words. My ego is already big as it is, so don't feed it more."

They laughed as they swayed slowly, the hours of practice Coran put them through in ballroom dancing in case it was needed during a formal event finally paid off.

"Ten!"

People inside began shouting excitedly.

"Nine!"

The night air was cold on their skin, but neither cared.

"Eight!"

They simply moved even nearer, sharing warmth.

"Seven!"

Pidge placed both of her arms around Keith's neck.

"Six!"

He followed her lead by circling her waist, bringing her impossibly closer.

"Five!"

Auburn eyes gazed into purple ones.

"Four!"

The shouts were louder now, but felt more distant in their ears.

"Three!"

They stop dancing at the same time.

"Two!"

Keith leaned down, a silent question in his eyes.

"One!"

Pidge nodded, understanding what he was asking for.

"Happy New Year!"

As cheers exploded in the air, the girl who once left everything behind and the boy who spent years trying to find himself kissed under the light coming from the stars. The moon as the only witness.

Chapter Text

Keith and Pidge had been sent on a mission to retrieve some mineral Coran needed to repair a part of the ship that could only be found on an ice-cold planet.

Everything here was frosted.

Finding water that wasn't frozen was impossible, which explained the lack of life here. It was only thanks to their paladin suit that they had managed not to go into instant hypothermia. Still, Keith could feel his finger going numb.

They ended up finding what they came for in a deep hole in the ground and with Altean gear, Pidge was able to guide Keith down. Once they obtained the mineral, the paladins made their way back to Keith's lion.

This was when they encountered problems.

*******

After they were done loading the material into the red lion, since they finished their mission faster than expected, Pidge and Keith thought exploring the planet a bit more would be a fun activity.

To be honest, they couldn't see much with all that snow.

"Keith, we should go back, there's obviously nothing here and I can feel the tip of my fingers and toes freeze." Pidge had stopped walking, watching as her teammate continued forward for a few steps.

"You're probably ri- Hey! I think I see something!" The girl stood there, struggling to make the form of the older boy the further away he was.

"It's probably just a weird pile of snow!" He couldn't hear her anymore, the static of the planet blocking the communication devices in their helmets, and the sound of the wind was too loud. However, a small sound caught her attention.

Crack.

Oh no.

"Keith! Come back now! I think we're standing on ice! Keith!?"

Despite her mind screaming at her to stop moving, Pidge tried her hardest to advance in the direction Keith had taken a few ticks ago. That's when she saw him immobile.

Now that they were finally close enough to each other, their coms were working. "You were right, it's just sn-"

Crack.

This time, they both heard it.

It was coming right from under him.

"Look out!" Without thinking, Pidge plunged in his direction, pushing him where the snow seemed ticker. The ice crumbling under her as Keith watched in horror.

"Pidge!"

Panicked, Keith scrambled to his feet, trying to calm down. He wouldn't be able to help her if he just plunged into the freezing water. This wasn't the time to act recklessly.

Her life was on the line.

Thankfully, as he made his way to the hole, he only heard a few small worrying noises, but nothing else happened.

He looked down in the water and was surprised to find a green light approaching the surface.

Pidge's bayard! It shot out of the water and Keith grabbed it. Immediately, he began pulling with all the muscles in his body until he saw her arms. Quickly, the red paladin took hold of them and pulled her out, wasting no time to pick her up in his arms and run as best and fast as he could to Red.

Her eyes were tightly closed as she struggled to breathe properly.

Her body was absolutely freezing to the touch.

As soon as they were inside the lion, Keith hurriedly fetched the emergency blankets he had stored and placed a few on the floor before laying her on them.

"Pidge? Hey! Everything is going to be okay, just stay with me."

At this point, her eyes were barely open as Keith began taking off her armor, repeating in his mind what he had learned at the Garrison.

I can't warm her up too quickly.

She'll go into shock.

Body heat can help.

He thought about trying to call the castle, but remembered Pidge telling him the static of the planet could mess with their communication devices. He could also make Red fly them back, but if they were heavily attacked on their way, he would need to take the commands and focus less on saving Pidge.

Guess they had to stay in the cave where he parked his lion until her condition was stabilized.

Once only her bra and underwear were on, Keith began stripping to his own undergarments and lay down next to her on the floor of the cockpit.

"Quiznak!"

The sports bra she wore was thick and all the fabric had absorbed a lot of water, which was freezing. If it felt cold on his skin, imagine on hers...

"Please, I really hope you'll be able to forgive me, Pidge."

It was also so tight on her body that Keith had no choice but to reach for his blade that he had left on the floor next to them.

"I'm so, so, so sorry."

He pushed the blankets away and lifted the fabric from her skin, cutting the string first before carefully placing the knife under the space he created and slashed it. Keith was careful not to expose her before he pulled the covers back up and finally threw the garment where their other clothes were.

It wasn't hard to fight down the blush on his face from the... uhm... intimacy of their position. Her life was still in danger. Whenever he tried to talk to her, she was barely responding, and when she did, it was with small grunts.

Eventually, after he had dried her hair and protectively hugged her close to his body for a while to try and warm her up, Pidge was finally shivering less and her skin didn't feel as cold to the touch. So, Keith stood up and scooped her up in his arms, careful to keep a blanket around her. He walked to a box in the cockpit where he had left extra clothes.

When he sat in his seat with Pidge on his lap, he began dressing her, starting with a warm shirt, which practically drowned her in, the sleeves way longer than her arms. He ended up having to uncover her chest to be able to slip the shirt on and successfully managed not to see too much, as he repeated, "I'm sorry," over and over again.

After slipping on a pair of sweatpants that were most definitely too big on her short legs, Keith began piloting them away from this planet and contacted the castle as soon as the communication was back on.

He held her tight against him until she was in the healing pod.

*******

The vargas after they came back from their mission had been chaotic. As soon as they landed, everyone was on them, asking Keith a bunch of questions as he carried a half-passed out Pidge to the med bay.

He only mentioned Pidge falling into freezing water and that her condition was more stable now.

No one asked if they completed their mission.

*******

Eventually, the rest of their teammates left to go to sleep except for Keith, who said he'd be the one to stay for when Pidge would fall out of the pod.

No one, not even Shiro, tried arguing with him. The tone of his voice forced them to just nod and leave.

As soon as he heard the sound of the pod releasing her, he was there to catch her, holding her tight against his body until he felt like she was capable of standing on her own.

"How are you feeling?" the worried boy asked, observing her face. "... Weird..." Pidge said as she scrunched her face in discomfort.

Keith chuckled. "Yeah, coming out of the pod always does this."

He was still holding her shoulders but chose to stare at the floor instead of her eyes. "I'm sorry, if I had listened to you... Pidge, you almost died because of me."

Gently, she grasped his face in her hands, tilting his head up as she smiled softly. "Maybe, but you're also the one who saved me. So it cancels it out."

"But-"

"I forgive you. Don't worry." Then, she hugged him so tightly, Keith's regrets immediately calmed down. She was okay and he could concentrate on the fact that they were both here, breathing and safe.

Keith has no idea how long they stayed in that position, but eventually, he broke the silence. "I love you," he whispered.

She relaxed even more in his arms, releasing a long sigh, as if a heavy weight was lifted from her shoulders. "I love you too."

Chapter 10: I really love her

Summary:

Day 10: Bells

***

Ring.

Usually, at this hour, this sound was followed by a heavy weight being dumped on their legs, but this night was different.

"What the fuck are you guys doing?!"

Notes:

I actually struggle to find what to write for this one (I know I always say this).

Chapter Text

Ring.

Pidge didn't even need to turn around to see who was there. She had become accustomed to this sound ever since they left for space in the Atlas that it no longer surprised her when she heard it.

Soon Kosmo was at her side, rubbing his head on her thigh until she petted his head.

"Hey," she said. Keith pulled up a chair next to her, immediately relaxing and letting go of his straight posture. "Hey, how's your day going?"

Pidge's eyes scanned across her screen, making sure everything was in order before shutting her computer. "Pretty well, actually. I just finished all the things I wanted to do today! What about you?"

"Well, since we had no mission or emergency call today, it was pretty uneventful." He smiled when she turned toward him.

Ring.

Installing a bell on Kosmo's collar was initially Hunk's idea. He was fed up with the space wolf sneaking into the kitchen and stealing the food he was preparing when his back was turned. The idea was soon supported by many people on the ship who kept getting jump-scared by the canine.

Pidge scooted her chair closer to him to be able to rest her head on his shoulder. "I was about to go to sleep, wanna join me?"

"Of course. My room I'm guessing," Keith replied, as he wrapped his arm around her.

She playfully shoved him away before answering. "Hey! Just so you know, my room is way less messy than it used to be in the castle!"

"Yeah, that's 'cause your mom is here," he shot back, laughing.

"Whatever."

*******

They were lucky the paladin's chambers weren't with the rest of the crew, otherwise, they definitely would have been caught sneaking into each other's rooms. And with Pidge's entire family onboard...

They knew their teammates probably realized something had changed in their relationship, but as for everyone else on the Atlas... It was better if they stayed in the dark for the time being.

The Garrison was pretty against fraternization after all.

In the dark and silence, the lovers lied down cuddling, both on the verge of falling asleep. Keith was on his back, mindlessly staring at the ceiling as Pidge's face was buried in his neck, half of her body lying on top of him.

Ring.

Usually, at this hour, this sound was followed by a heavy weight being dumped on their legs, but this night was different.

"What the fuck are you guys doing?!"

They instantly recognize this voice.

"Matt! What are you doing here!?" questioned Pidge panicked, standing up from the bed, Keith didn't dare to move.

"I needed to talk with you and when I asked Kosmo to bring me to you, that's what I found!" He looked between the two paladins.

"I can exp-"

"How long has this been going on?"

"Matt, listen. We're not doing anything stupid, trust me. We know the mission is important and we won't let this distract us-"

"Katie, how long?" His voice was stern.

"It started a while ago, but was officialized not long after we came back to earth..."

Everyone in the room was silent for a moment, no one dared to look at one another.

"Why wouldn't you tell me?" asked Matt in a calmer voice. That wasn't what they. expected to hear.

"I'm not sure I want our parents to know just yet... And you tend to be a bit, uhm, overprotective sometimes, so I wasn't sure how you were going to react."

Her brother pinched the bridge of his nose. "Katie-"

Before he could develop his sentence, Keith, who had enough of just observing the siblings, stepped in. "Matt, I'm sorry we kept you in the dark. We just thought it'd be easier if the least number of people knew. But I swear my intentions with your sister are only good. I truly love her. I'd never let what we have harm her in any way, I promise."

Pidge couldn't believe her ears. Yes, they had said, "I like you," but love! And really, did it have to happen in front of her brother!? All she wanted to do right now was to reply to his declaration by covering his face in kisses. But the presence of someone was making her wish impossible...

And Kosmo, the cause of all of this, was peacefully sleeping on the edge of the bed.

"Oh Keith... you really care about me that much?" She turned toward her boyfriend as he stood up from his bed, taking her hands in his. "Of course I do, I always have. I'm just pretty shitty when it comes to expressing my emotions. Sorry it took so long for me to tell you."

Matt grunted, dragging his hands across his face, reminding he was still in the room with them.

"Look you two, I obviously won't forbid you to date or anything like that. I know, like you said, I can be overprotective, but you're both mature enough. It's just..." He focused his attention on his little sister. "We used to tell each other everything and now, I feel like we're not as close as we used to be. You have changed so fast and so much in the last few years, I was barely even there... In the end, I just don't want us to become strangers."

Pidge wrapped her arms around Matt's neck, hiding her face in it. "We'll never be strangers. I too have realized we didn't hangout as much as we did when we were younger. We should definitely try to make an effort to be with each other outside of meetings or projects like in the old times. I didn't tell you about Keith and I because this still feels new and... I care about what you think of me. I was worried you'd think I was making a mistake, since our mission is so dangerous and important for the entire universe..."

Matt stroked her hair, silently listening to her until she was done. "You're smart, Katie, I'll forever trust your judgment."

*******

After Matt finally left, reminding them to stay safe as he winked much to their embarrassment, Keith and Pidge simply lied back down in their earlier positions, even more tired than before.

The girl was about to fall asleep, nestled into her boyfriend's side when he whispered her name, she hummed in response.

"I meant what I said, all of it. I didn't say that hoping Matt would leave us alone. I really love you."

Forcing her eyes open, staring at him before she used all of the strength left in her body to lift herself up a bit to leave a short kiss on the corner of his mouth.

"I-"

Ring.

"Urgh! I'm really starting to hate this stupid bell!" she exclaimed. Keith chuckled, observing his wolf, who teleported to simply go lay in his doggy bed on the other side of the room.

He had spoiled him too much, Kosmo was becoming lazy.

Pidge turned his head in her direction once more by holding his cheeks before deposing a proper kiss on his lips. "I love you too, Keith."

They had never slept this well.

Chapter Text

The first time it happened, Pidge could tell Keith wasn't concentrated at all. The other paladin had already left toward their lions while Keith stood in the hallway, looking dazed.

As soon as she realized, Pidge turned around, confused. Slowly, she approached him. "Keith? Is everything alright?"

He didn't answer for a while, leaving the girl quite concerned until she understood what was causing this hesitation.

"I'm sure you'll do a great job out there. You're still learning how to be Black's pilot. With time-"

"I don't have time to learn and make mistakes Pidge! All of our lives are on the line. Yeah, maybe last time I messed up we ended up being fine, but this won't always be the case. This is war, we could die and it would all be my fault... Why did he choose me?"

She couldn't answer, he was right after all. They didn't have the luxury of slowly learning how to do their job. The entire universe depends on them. "That's true, but we're all in this with you. If you don't know what to do, ask us. That's what friends are for," she tried to reassure him. Pidge walked closer to him.

Even if he wasn't as tall as the others, the green paladin still had to get up on her tiptoes to be able to wrap her arms around his neck, hugging him tightly. It took a few ticks, but eventually, Keith reciprocated the embrace, burying his face in her fluffy hair, breathing calmly as he tried to compose himself. This wasn't the right time to have another breakdown.

"Thanks Pidge, I really needed to hear that."

When she began pulling away, Keith expected her to immediately turn around to go to her lion, but instead, she placed a soft kiss on his cheek.

"No prob! Good luck, I believe in you, awesome leader!"

Keith stared as she left him alone, standing like an idiot, bringing a hand to his face to cover his reddening cheeks.

"Quiznak."

*******

After the mission, which thankfully went well, the boy felt his heart on the edge of bursting out of his chest when Pidge sent him a thumbs up, smiling brightly.

Oh.

He was in so much trouble.

*******

The second time it happened, they were about to leave for a dangerous mission. They had revised the plan many times and trained thoroughly to be ready for anything.

And yet, all the paladins were freaking out. They could feel the worry of their teammates through the bond, but no one knew how to ease it.

Shiro would have known what to do...

Keith shook his head. No, it wasn't the moment to think this way.

Before entering the bridge for a final meeting, Keith saw Pidge standing outside of her room, she seemed to hesitate to go any further.

Right, she had helped him last time he felt like he couldn't move forward. This time, he was going to repay her kind action!

He moved next to her, leaning on the wall, arms at his side, suddenly not sure what to do with them. "We'll do it, we're prepared. Don't worry about the 'what if,' I know you. You're going to do an amazing job."

Wordlessly, Pidge leaned her head on his shoulder, taking a deep breath. The black paladin wrapped one of his arms around her shoulder, slowly stroking her arm. Eventually, he felt her relax before she turned to smile brightly at him. "You're right, I believe in us."

Keith doesn't know where that confidence came from, but he then leaned down, kissing her temple.

For a few ticks, she blinked at him in surprise, her mouth slightly open before a soft grin made its way onto her face.

"Good luck," he said, before they both left for their respective lions.

*******

All the other instances after this are a blur for Keith. Sometimes, she was the one to initiate, and others, it was him.

Each time, she would smile and his face would burn as he tried his hardest to hide it from her.

Keith would be lying if he said he didn't look forward to those moments. He liked it so much that he would make sure he ran into her alone before every mission just to be certain he'd receive his good luck charm.

Did it sound like he was in love?

Absolutely.

Was he in love with his most intelligent teammate?

Yes, no questions asked.

Keith thought that he could wait until they were back on earth after leaving in the Atlas to end this war once and for all. He quickly realized this plan wasn't going to work, as he watched her laugh with Matt and Shiro on the other side of the table.

She was simply so beautiful.

For their last night on earth, the Holts had invited Shiro over, who then offered Keith and his mother to join them as well.

He wasn't surprised when Krolia accepted, she was getting along pretty well with Colleen.

The entire time they ate, Keith only spoke when someone directly asked him something. Otherwise, his gaze was fixated on the girl he would like to one day be able to call his girlfriend.

Everyone noticed, except, somehow, Voltron's genius.

*******

As they waited for the dessert, Pidge and Keith decided to go on a ride in the Garrison issued vehicle they lended to Keith and his mom.

For a while, they didn't talk, enjoying the peace of the vast horizon. Without being aware of it, the black paladin had driven them to his dad's old shack.

They sat on the porch in tranquility until Pidge finally broke the silence. "Can you believe all the things we have seen since we were here? It's crazy to just even think about that..."

She rested her head on his shoulder like she did many times before, closing her eyes as she breathed slowly. "Yeah... Say Pidge?" She hummed in response. "Let's say I have something super important to tell someone, but I'm not sure how they'll react. Should I do this now or wait until we're back on earth?"

Keith panicked when she opened her eyes and scooted a bit away from him, her expression unreadable before she smiled at him. "I would go for it. Being a paladin of Voltron isn't exactly without risks. Better late than never, I guess..."

Even if she wore a gentle grin, Keith had learned to pick up on the clues her body gave rather than her facial expression or words.

She was disappointed in something.

Why would she b-

Oh.

"You're right." He shuffled closer, grabbing her hands to make her face him more.

"Pidge, I realized when you first kissed my cheek, but it's only now that I'm capable of finding the courage to tell you this. You're funny, sassy, smart, incredibly so and the prettiest girl I've ever laid my eyes on. I know as paladins our mission is important and we probably shouldn't allow distractions. However, you already own my entire heart and what I'm desperately trying to say is that I love you, Katie."

She stared at him wide-eyed and Keith feared for the worst until she tightened her hold on his hands. "I li- love you too."

Carefully, he reached for her cheek, sliding closer to her and cautiously brought his face centimetres from her, giving her as much time as possible to pull away.

A weight was lifted from his shoulders when she closed the short distance between their lips.

Keith couldn't help himself, in an instant, he had wrapped his arms around her body and lifted her in his lap, trapping her against him. Her small hands flew to his hair as the older boy felt his body relax.

Their coming fight might be the hardest they ever had, but at least now, their good luck charm would be at their side forever.

Stronger than ever.

Chapter 12: It’s easy, trust me

Chapter Text

Lately, days off for the Voltron team have become even more rare. But that morning, Allura had proudly announced they could do whatever they pleased. It wasn't that the Galra had suddenly decided to calm down, but that the last battle had left the lions and the castle damaged. Pidge and Coran needed to reboot a system that was apparently going to take a lot of time and while they waited, nothing else could be done.

During the repairs, they had to land on a planet that was on the colder side, and luckily for them, it was the only season of the year without heavy snow storms. So, instead of staying inside for the entire day, the paladins and the Alteans would spend the day outside.

Turns out, just like humans, Alteans had an activity that was exactly like ice skating with a type of shoe that looked practically the same.

Keith was glad to be able to relax, however, he had no idea how to skate. He thought maybe Hunk or Lance would have the same problems, both coming from hooter countries. That wasn't the case at all.

That's why he planned to just sit in the snow, observing his friends having fun, his skating shoes staying on his feet, unused.

He figured that was how the rest of the day was going to be like, until Pidge approached him gracefully, a big grin on her face. "Keith! What are you doing here alone? Come join us, it'll be so much more fun if you're there with the rest of us!"

"I..." He was about to decline her generous offer when she grabbed his hands, yanking him up.

Sometimes, the red paladin forgot how much strength was hidden in her seemingly small and frail body. Not only was she the most intelligent amongst them, she had also learned how to use her height as an advantage. Staring at her always reminded Keith how long they had been fighting in this war. At the start, she was closed off from the team, constantly hiding in her lab or Green's hangar. But now, she smiled more and opened up to them when she needed to.

Her personality that he loved wasn't the only thing different about the young girl. Her hair had grown a bit too, but she preferred to keep it a few inches above her shoulders for convenience. She had also grown up, not much, but it was noticeable. And her eyes...

She didn't wear her glasses as often as she used to. It's not that Keith didn't like them on her face. On the contrary, he thought they made her look adorable. But when she took them off, the light would reflect more and made the auburn color so beautiful. It had happened more than once that he lost himself in them, not caring if he was going to get caught by her or not.

"Keith, come on!" And once more, it occurred. He was so busy observing her, he hadn't realized Pidge had now dragged him on the ice.

Quiznak! He was on the ice!

"Uhmm"

Pidge had already started skating away when she turned around when her teammate wasn't following her. She blinked in his direction, tilting her head to the side until she understood what was wrong.

"Oh! You can't skate!"

Keith didn't have time to feel embarrassed before she had his hands in her smaller one. "I'll show you, don't worry!"

Huh?

"Wait Pi-" She interrupted him. "No. No. No. You should be able to enjoy your day off with us and not have to sit in your corner. Don't worry, I'll make sure you won't fall!"

Keith cursed her gorgeous smile, it made it impossible to say no to her. "Alright."

"First of all, don't stand so straight, bend your knees a bit and be careful not to lean back, you'll fall on her ass if you do. Then, we'll start easy, tilt one of your feet to the side but not too much and push slowly, for now."

He did as she instructed as she skated backward, her hands still holding his. "Now do the same with your other feet and put the other one straightforward."

They did this for a while, carefully advancing until he could alternate the movement faster.

There were a few instances when he almost fell, but she always supported him. Soon, the girl moved beside him, only holding one of his arms and guided them for turns.

He had completely forgotten about their audience until Pidge made them stop next to them.

"Good job, Keith, you're a fast learner!" Shiro praised. "Oh yes! I recall as a child, it had taken me quite a lot of time and practice not to fall every five ticks!" Allura then exclaimed.

"Yeah, well Keith isn't really a kid, so... Not that impressive if you ask me," Lance snickered, succeeding in annoying Keith.

He was about to make a comeback when Pidge suddenly wrapped both of her arms around one of Keith's, holding it tightly to her chest. "Well, no one asked you and as his teacher, I think he's doing an amazing job!"

His heart exploded.

After Lance and Pidge had a small staring contest, the blue paladin eventually let it go and skated away carelessly.

*******

Soon, they all went back inside the castle to warm up and eat dinner and once most had gone to bed, Keith found himself searching for Pidge, knowing she was most likely still awake. The boy ended up on the bridge and saw her through the windows.

She went back outside to skate even if it was really dark at this hour, the only light being the stars and some lanterns Allura had placed earlier.

Keith didn't have to think twice as he grabbed his skates and his coat to join her in the cold night. She smiled warmly when she saw him approach. "Glad to see you enjoy this activity."

Truth be told, he didn't think skating was all that fun. In reality, it was her that actually interested him, made him go on the ice even if his feet and ankles were beginning to ache.

"Yeah, it's pretty fun. Thanks for teaching me, living in the desert and never traveling anywhere else wasn't the perfect environment to learn this," Keith said. He tried getting closer to Pidge, who was now standing on the edge of the rink when he lost stability as he arrived in front of her, making both of them fall in the snow.

Thankfully, the red paladin was able to stop himself from crushing the girl under his weight and neither of them seemed injured. It took him some time to realize the position they were in.

Even in the dark, he could see the stars reflecting in her eyes and the way the lights around them hit her hair that was now covered in snow made her look even more beautiful.

They didn't utter a single word, only staring at each other. When Keith saw her gaze fall to his lips for a single tick, the boy felt his heart beat pick up.

Did she also like him? Was this why her cheeks were a pretty red color? No, she was probably just cold...

He waited a bit more. Perhaps she was going to push him away or tell him to get off of her. But she didn't move either.

So, carefully, Keith started to lean down, making sure she saw him observe her lips as a silent question, scared that if he talked, this moment would be ruined. Pidge answered by grabbing the collar of his coat and connecting their lips together.

They would both have loved staying there forever, Pidge's hands buried in Keith's hair as one of his arms held her up against him with the other tilting her head to deepen the kiss. But they were still outside, in the snow and the new lovers could feel their teammate trembling.

Reluctantly and with all the strength in their bodies, they forced themself to put some distance between their faces. Pidge and Keith stayed there, close to each other, simply staring into the other's eyes until they both burst out laughing.

"I-" Keith began as Pidge also opened her mouth to say, "I-"

The arms of Voltron erupted in laughter.

"Ok. Ok, you go first," the boy proposed. She spoke once she was able to breathe normally. "Would you do me the honor of becoming my boyfriend?" Keith held her evenmore tightly against his body. "Nooooo!" He realized what he just said sounded like when he felt her freeze.

"No?" Pidge muttered, sounding hurt.

Wanting to fix this misunderstanding as soon as possible, the red paladin brought her away from him as he held her shoulders in a firm grip to be able to stare into her eyes once more. "No, no, no! I didn't mean it that way! I meant; No! I wanted to be the one to ask you this first. Well, not for you to be my boyfriend, but for me to be your boyfriend or you to be my girlfriend!" he exclaimed, rambling a bit.

Feeling relieved, Pidge relaxed. "But you're the one who told me to go first!" She was really struggling not to laugh at the panicked boy. "I know!" he shouted, a big grin on his face.

If it wasn't for the fact they could barely feel the tip of their fingers, the arms of Voltron would have stayed there until the sun rose. So, they made their way to the castle and after leaving their warm clothes in a pile with the rest, Keith offered to walk Pidge to her room.

"Goodnight then..." she said expectantly as she stared at him directly in the eyes, waiting for him to understand what she was waiting for.

Amused, Keith gently took hold of her cheeks and brought his lips to her temple, then her forehead, the top of her eyelids, her cheeks and even her chin. "Keith..."

Finally, he obliged her, pressing his lips to hers in a soft kiss, the urgency of their first missing.

It was a promise that tomorrow, he'll love her just as much, if not more.

Forever.
