Work Text:

Miko was having a weird day.

Her morning started normal until she got to school. At the entrance, she spotted Kei and Momo.

"You coming girl?"

"I'm waiting for Okarun."

It was funny, you'd think they would tone down their clinginess after they got together but it only made them worse. They were a package deal, where one was the other wasn't far behind. She swears Okarun especially has some sort of Momo sense as he's always there when Momo needs him.

"Oh hey, what was up with that Soko guy?"

Momo furrowed her brow, "I didn't tell you that story?"

"Nope."

"You won't believe this but, Soko, super tall, brown hair, pretty sure he failed the grade twice now? All of a sudden he's got a thing for me—"

"Who's got a thing for you, Miss Ayase?"

She hummed in content, kissing his cheek as soon as he arrived up to them.

"Just some loser. He came up to me yesterday."

"He's not bothering you is he?"

Miko swore she saw Okarun's eyes flash red.

"No, I can handle it just fine."

Okarun's fingers rubbed her side. "Right, I know."

Before Miko had a chance to ask, the warning bell rang. Kei didn't say anything about Okarun's different eye color. She shook herself mentally, Must have been the sun's reflection.

Then another incident occurred in the hallway. Okarun and Momo were in a deep discussion, meandering through the hallway. Miko spotted them heading her way. Momo must have been telling him a story by the way her arms were moving. Another student knocked into her outstretched arm, knocking her books to the ground. He would've continued walking if it wasn't for Okarun grabbing him by the shoulder.

"Apologize."

Miko came to a halt. Was that really Okarun's voice? Her mind whispered, it dropped several octaves. Everyone else was walking on by heading to class but there was this aura around him. The air felt colder and Miko was glued to her spot.

She could make out streaks of red on his face and he was holding this guy that was twice the size of him with one hand!

"Pick up the lady's books for her. Now."

The student did as he was told, apologizing profusely again before hightailing it.

Momo didn't seem phased by Okarun's abrupt attitude change.

"As much as I find it hot, you got to chill out." Miko heard her say.

"Sorry, it just flares up." He whispered back.

The icing on the cake however was what happened in their seventh period class.

The teacher droned on like usual, the three girls in the back not paying attention. Students continued to whisper around them.

A shiver went down her spine and all of a sudden the talking ceased around her.

"Uhhh...what's going on?" Miko glanced up from her phone.

The rest of the class was gone. Her gaze went to the pitch-black windows that looked into the hallway.

Momo raised her head. "Oh shit, not again." Stumbling up, she surveyed the classroom.

"Where did everyone go?" Kei asked, still touching up her eyeshadow.

Momo peeked out into the hallway. Nothing.

"How the hell are you guys here with me?"

"Girl, you know what's happening?"

A bright blue light burst through the windows. Momo quickly jerked the two of her friends up against the wall, as the blue light swept through the empty classroom.

Momo held a finger up to her lips signaling them to be quiet. Kei was trembling. The blue light retreated getting dimmer as it left the room. Momo breathed a sigh of relief out of her nose. On habit, Miko cracked her gum between her teeth.

All three of their eyes widened, frozen in shock. Blue light flooded the room again, windows shattering, long spindly fingers snatched Momo up and out of the room.

"MOMO!"

Kei and Miko spilled out into the hallway. They saw Momo struggling against the long gray fingers wrapped around her waist. The figure that had her inhumanly tall and skinny. Its bulbous head looked like it was barely holding on upright on its neck.

"What do we do? What do we do?" Kei was freaking out.

The creature opened its mouth, the blue glow originating from there. "We have you now Momo Ayase." Its voice sounded scratchy like it hurt to even talk. "We're going to enjoy selling you off."

Miko grabbed a piece of drywall and launched it was the creature.

Its head snapped unnaturally towards them causing Kei to let out a little scream.

"I seriously don't have time for this," Momo grunted. With the alien's attention off of her, she used her ghost hands to bend back one of its fingers holding on to her. Using her chi, she pushed away from it, flying through the air to land on her back in front of her friends.

"Woah! Mo! You have superpowers?!"

"GIRL."

She scrambled to her feet. "It's a long story."

The alien righted itself again. "Your escape is futile and your guard dog is nowhere to be found."

"Woof."

From the girls' perspectives, large jaws snapped around the alien's neck, tearing the bulbous head clean off. The new monster stepped out of the shadows, once the body thumped to the ground.

Kei and Miko screamed again seeing another one.

"Will you guys shut up? It's Okarun." Momo snapped.

"Ta—Takakura?"

Momo took in his appearance. He was only in his black slacks while his upper torso remained bare. She mentally ran through his schedule and realized that he would've had gym class at this time.

Okarun's red eyes appeared dilated as he focused his stare on Momo. Within a blink of an eye, he was in front of her. His hands cradled her face as he took stock of her condition.

"Momo..."

"I'm good, thanks for coming in time."

His harsh breathing settled as soon as Momo placed her palm on his chest.

"Takaura is a vampire?" Miko questioned.

"A yokai actually. He got cursed and now he got cool powers." Momo surmised.

Okarun settled on his hunches. "Kei and Miko got dragged into empty space too? Such a bummer."

"What's up with his voice? That's the first time he's said my first name."

"He has no filter in this form."

"They're gonna slow me down, I won't be able to protect you as much Babe."

Miko crossed her arms, "Hey we didn't ask to be here either."

"You guys didn't touch a golden ball did you?" He asked.

"No."

"A golden ball?"

"Wannabe Salad Fingers knew me by name. They must've been paid to take me."

A rumble tore through his chest with steam slipping out from his teeth. Momo lightly twirled his fingers through his white hair.

"Never would've imagined you as a threatening guard dog Okarun."

Yokarun stood up to his full height and his mask full of teeth fell away. "I'm not a dog."

Kei fanned herself. "Girl, you've been holding out on us! Who knew Okarun was such a hottie."

She narrowed her eyes at her friend. Okarun sighed, "Man I got too many girls flirting with me, stress'n me out." His puppy-like eyes bored into his girlfriend. "I only want you Momo."

She felt her face flush as she knocked her fist into his shoulder. "You can't be say'n stuff like that right now!"

"Momo is mad at me. Might as well die."

"Jesus Christ," Miko muttered with a hand on her head.

"Focus Okarun, we're still in empty space, meaning there's more of them."

Out of the darkness, a long hand shot out and whacked Okarun into one of the classroom walls. It crumbled on top of him. It tried again but Momo blocked it with a shield. Miko and Kei screamed, wrapping their arms around each other.

Hearing the commotion, Okarun clawed his way out from the rubble. Leaping, he intercepted a long finger, biting it clean off before it reached the girls. He settled low on the ground on all fours in front of Momo.

One, two, three aliens appeared. Each of them opened their mouths and the blue light beamed. Momo had to drop her barrier to cover her eyes. The three aliens drew closer as the light disorientated them.

"I can't see anything! Hit'em with an all-out Okarun!"

It's really blind luck that he aimed and threw himself at the aliens. His head hit the main one in the middle and he swiped his claws out to catch the other two. Flesh tearing easily, they were no match for his sharp close-range attacks.

The environment flickered in and out of existence. The three girls opened their eyes to see the sun filtering through the windows.

"Oh thank god, we're back."

Miko sighed in relief, "I never want to do that again."

Kei looked around, "Hey...where's Okarun?"

"Over here." A weakened voice called out.

They found him flat on his back in between the vending machines.

Momo crouched in front of him. "Are you okay?"

"Just peachy. You okay?"

She giggled, "Just fine, Big Dog."
