Summary
It was as though Ennis had been a framed picture hanging at a tilt his whole life, and Jack had walked by, tilted his head, and with a single nudge, set him straight. Jack had shown him an entirely different image, one that challenged everything Ennis thought he knew about himself and the world he lived in.
Suddenly, life as Ennis had pictured it, Alma at the end of the aisle in her white veil, eyes soft and hands folded, everything neat and proper and expected, seemed like it belonged to another man’s story. It wasn’t the life he was meant to lead. It wasn’t what he was meant to see when he closed his eyes at night and dreamed of the future.

An in-depth look at Ennis' inner demons and how they refuse to be placated. His fears for himself and Jack due to the 'sinful' desire they have for each other is heartbreaking. And the way this turns outward into anger with Jack matches well with the older Ennis we see in the film.
Well-written, wonderfully descriptive, with a glimmer of hope at the end.
