Work Text:
Mira groans.
She stares down at the empty contact case in her hands. Other empty boxes are scattered about the sink. Part of her is pissed that she let this happen. Part of her is pissed she hasn’t gotten around to getting a new prescription since being kicked out of her parents’ house. Part of her is pissed that her parents refused to give her her prescription. But she knows at the end of the day, a good part of the blame falls on her shoulders. She is the one that forgot to get a new prescription.
While time has passed since forming Huntr/x and moving to Seoul, Mira's schedule has been consumed by idol work and hunter training. Celine reminds her of her parents, but with less of an edge. She might be strict and keep her and the others on a tight schedule, the older woman doesn’t care what they do in their free time (barring getting in trouble with the law). Even with that freedom, she failed to do anything about her contacts.
Damn it. Why did I keep going out with Rumi and Zoey? Mira thinks to herself. She pinches the bridge of her nose. The hell do I do now?
Mira thinks. It will be a few days before she has any free time to get a new prescription. Can she last that long?
It’s not like I have a choice.
With a sigh, Mira tosses her empty boxes into the trash. She looks around the room. Nothing is in focus. Even as she looks into the mirror, Mira is unable to make out the finer details of her face. The next couple of days are going to be fun, aren’t they?
Mira does her best to hide her predicament from Rumi and Zoey. If this had happened only a month ago, things might have been a little better. They recently moved into a new apartment. Walking around without hitting anything is like walking through a landmine field. What gets her the most are when Zoey and Rumi leave a chair or table pushed out.
“Mira, are you okay?” Zoey asks after Mira topples over a footstool. She helps the taller girl to her feet.
“I'm fine,” Mira groans.
“What happened?” Rumi asks.
“Uh,” Mira rubs the back of her neck. “I just wasn't paying attention.”
Rumi raises an eyebrow. “You've been tripping a lot, though. Do you feel okay?”
Mira waves her off. “I'm fine. Don't worry.”
Rumi and Zoey exchange looks but say nothing.
The rest of the day goes on with more tripping. Mira swears she is going to wake up with bruises on her legs tomorrow. Though, the next day is no better. Celine has the trio training with their weapons. Mira has gotten used to her gok-do. It feels right in her hands. Zoey herself has gotten comfortable with her shinkal. Though Rumi, who has trained since practical birth, continues to have the upper hand. Her sword is like a part of her body and she knows it.
The training dummies come to life and begin the spar. Mira's eyes ache from all the squinting she has been doing. If she lets them rest, she will lose this fight. Mira sees a blurry dummy come towards her, a wooden pole held in their hands. She quickly lifts her weapon in the air, blocking the attack.
Mira shoves it back. The moment there is an opening, she slices the dummy in half with her glowing blade. In the blurry world around her, she sees purple and blue blotches move around with ease. They take down the other dummies with no issue.
Mira turns her attention forward. She searches for her next target. However, it finds her. The blur comes at her without warning. Mira has no time to react before she feels something hard hit her in the side of the head. The next thing she knows, she is staring up at the ceiling and Rumi is shouting for the dummies to stop.
“Are you okay?!?” Zoey says, hovering over her. “That was a hard hit!”
“I’m fine…” Mira groans. The blurry world now spins.
Rumi now appears. “Are you sure? How did you not see that coming?”
Mira doesn’t answer.
“Hey, Mi. Been meaning to ask,” Zoey starts. She lifts up her hand. “How many fingers am I holding up?”
Crap…
She can’t help but squint. It takes Mira a couple moments before she answers. “Three?”
“Lucky guess.” Zoey looks at Rumi. “You were right. She can’t see. Did you see her squinting?”
“Mira, why are you walking around blind?” Rumi asks.
Mira rubs her aching temple. “I ran out of contacts. Haven’t had time to get new ones. I need to get a new prescription anyway.”
“Why?”
“Parents didn’t give it to me.”
“Do you not have glasses?” Zoey inquiries.
Mira shakes her head. “Parents never got me any. They said wearing them would somehow ruin their perfect image. How? I have no clue but I gave up understanding them years ago.”
“Wow, your parents really do suck.”
“I was going to later this week. I thought I could survive without them.”
“Nope. We are going now.” Rumi sticks out her hand.
“Huh? Now?” Mira blinks as she takes Rumi’s hand.
“Yes. We are going to get you a new prescription and a set of glasses so you don’t have to walk around blind as a bat.”
“You don’t have to do that. It’s my problem.”
“We are a team now! It’s all our problems,” Zoey says. “Besides, we can’t let a demon get the jump on you because you couldn’t see them! And think about it! Shopping for glasses sounds like fun!”
“We’re going, no questions.” Rumi grabs Mira's arm. “Let’s go!”
Mira protests go unheard. Eventually, she gives up. Rumi and Zoey drag her around Seoul until they find a place with walk-ins. Mira groans as she goes through the annoying process of getting her eyes checked. Look at these letters. Is one or two better? At least this time they don’t have to dilate her eyes. A new prescription is written and it’s off to get a pair of glasses.
“So which ones do you like?” Zoey asks as they look at the cases. “Oh what about these?!?”
Mira is handed a pair of bright, neon pink glasses. “I think these might be a bit too much for me,” she replies.
“Do you have any style in mind?” Rumi asks.
“Not really. Like I said, my parents never let me get them. Had to walk around blind as a kid until I was old enough for contacts.”
“We got plenty to choose from! I am sure something here will work for you!” Zoey replies.
The three spend the next hour searching for the perfect pair. Zoey and Rumi are patient with Mira as she tries on glasses after glasses. Nothing looks right. Nothing feels like her. She comes close but her heart tells her no. Mira begins to give up, thinking there is nothing here for her. She must have gone through half the store by now.
Mira is about to tell the others they should give up when they put one final pair of glasses in her hands.
“C’mon. Try it!” Rumi smiles. “I have a good feeling about this pair!”
Mira snorts. “That’s like the fifth time you said that.”
“I got the feeling too! Try them!” Zoey says.
Rolling her eyes, Mira tries them on. She turns her attention towards the mirror near her. The glasses are circular and gold. Something clicks inside of her brain. Looking at her reflection, she can’t help but smile.
“Is that a win?!?” Both Rumi and Zoey ask together.
“Yes.”
Out of the corner of her eye, Mira watches the two high five each other.
Sadly, she has to wait a few days before the frames are made. Her contacts come in faster, much to her relief. Seeing the world clearly after several days gives her a headache but to her, it’s worth seeing. Least Rumi and Zoey help nurse her pain.
When the glasses finally come in, Mira hesitates for a moment.
“Try them on!” Zoey says, shaking Mira by the shoulders.
“Okay! Okay!”
Mira takes out her contacts and puts on her new glasses. The metal feels cold and tickles her nose. Blinking, she lets her eyes adjust to the new sensation. Everything is crystal clear. Not that much different from her contact but at least now she doesn’t have to keep touching her eyes.
“How do you feel?” Rumi asks. “Do you like them?”
“Don’t feel much different but yes, I do.”
“You definitely should wear them! Give your eyes a break,” Zoey says. “Plus, you look kind of good in them.”
Mira feels her face warm.
“She’s right. The glasses look good on you,” Rumi chuckles.
Now Mira’s face is hot. Mira can no longer look at either of them in the eye. “T-Thank you. And thanks for helping me get these. I probably wouldn’t’ve gotten glasses if you two didn’t force me to.”
Two sets of arms wrap around Mira, holding her in a tight embrace.
“Of course. Glad we could help!” Rumi says.
“Glad you can see again. You better not let those training dummies get the jump on you again!” Zoey states. “Though…I don’t mind being ahead of you in our little game.”
Mira scoffs. “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.”
