Work Text:
“Well… there has to be an alternative, right? So let’s just figure out what we can substitute!”
Roy can see Ed’s grip on the edges of the counter tighten. “An alternative—Roy, we don’t have anything that you can use as a substitute for eggs! Not anything that I want to risk fucking up this entire recipe with anyway!”
“Don’t you think you’re being a little—”
“If you say ‘overdramatic’, I swear to—”
Roy holds his hands up in hopes of placating Ed even a little. “My apologies, dear heart. How can I rectify this situation?”
“You can run to the damn store and buy some damn eggs since you’re the one who assured me that we still had some! Al’s supposed to be here in four hours and this damn cake has to bake for an hour and then it has to rest until completely cool before I can even hope to frost it and who knows how long that’ll take!”
Roy forces Ed to turn away from where he seems to be trying to glare a hole into the paper containing the recipe, running his hands up and down Ed’s forearms until he looks up. “Hey, it’s going to be fine. I’m sorry I didn’t double check the eggs. I will go get them at the speed of light, but I need you to take a deep breath for me first.”
Ed relents after holding his withering stare for a few more seconds, closing his eyes and resting his forehead against Roy’s cheek as he takes a slow breath in and out. He lets out a sigh and pulls back just enough to meet Roy’s lips with his own. Roy feels a little bit of the tension leave Ed’s body and he smiles into the kiss.
“Sorry. S'just the first birthday in forever that he’ll be here instead of Xing. Want it to be perfect.”
“It’ll be perfect because you’ll be together. You know that’s all Alphonse really cares about.”
“You’re so annoying. Hurry up already.” Ed huffs out another sigh, fixing Roy with another glare—but this one is devoid of bite. He’s even fighting off a smile as he all but pushes Roy out of their front door. That’s much better. “Get home safe.”
Roy leans in to press a chaste kiss to Ed’s lips as he pulls his keys from his jacket pocket. “I promise.”
