"You just gave me the impression we were exclusive. But I guess I had it wrong." Ed won't meet his eyes and Roy's heart clenches painfully in his chest at the sheer amount of hurt in his voice.
Roy blinks and then blinks again, his brow furrowing in confusion. "I don't—What—Where is all this coming from?"
"You—I saw you kissing some woman yesterday! I was walking home from the library and you were outside Fleur's on Main with some tall, leggy, beautiful brunette and you leaned down and kissed her!" Ed's eyes dart up to Roy's for no more than a moment, but it's long enough for Roy to see the fire in those golden eyes blazing hot in his anger and his hurt, fists clenched at his sides so tightly that Roy can see his knuckles becoming pale. "And I—I get it. I don't—I can't even blame you for… for wanting someone like her. But I just thought—I thought we were—"
"Ed, sweetheart, that was Eleanor. One of the Madame's girls. She had some time sensitive information to send my way so I took her out to lunch. I kissed her on the cheek as we said our goodbyes. I promise you that it was nothing more than a completely platonic outing. Familial, even." Roy cautiously steps into Ed's personal space until he can gently touch the back of one of those clenched fists. "I'm sorry for not letting you know ahead of time, but you've been so busy with your research paper that I haven't been able to get ahold of you all week and I had no way of putting this meeting off."
Ed's fingers slowly unfurl, but he still refuses to look up and meet Roy's eyes again. His voice is small and quiet and Roy can see that he's squeezed his eyes shut. "Oh."
Roy cautiously brings his hand up to Ed's face, applying the gentle pressure of two fingers under his chin in hopes of getting Ed to look at him. Ed takes a shuddering breath before hesitantly opening his eyes and meeting Roy's waiting gaze. Roy smiles warmly down at him, letting his hand move from his chin to cup the side of Ed's face.
"There is no one else, Edward. There will never be anyone else. I am yours and yours alone for as long as you'll have me. I'm sorry if I made you doubt my devotion and commitment to you for even a moment."
Ed leans into the touch, closing the scant distance between them and letting his arms come up to wrap around Roy's middle. "I'm—I'm sorry. I shouldn't have… assumed."
Roy shakes his head, thumb running affectionately along Ed's cheek. "You have nothing to apologize for, darling. I can't say I wouldn't have reacted in a similar manner had I seen you in a situation that seemed intimate with someone else. It's only natural to be jealous or hurt or angry."
"Still. S'not your fault I'm all—insecure—or whatever. You didn't deserve me just bursting in here all pissed and accusatory."
"Really, Ed, I assure you it's quite alright. You don't need to punish yourself for being human." Roy leans down to rest his forehead against Ed's, arms wrapping securely around his waist to pull him in as close as possible.
Ed leans heavily into Roy, his body seeming to finally fully relax as he brushes their noses together. "I just—I don't want to ruin this."
"Impossible." Roy runs a hand soothingly along Ed's back, pressing a kiss between his eyes. "If you ever require reassurance, please tell me. I will always do my best to ease your worries or doubts. It will never be a bother to me. You will never be a bother to me."
Ed grumbles under his breath, but his grip on Roy's shirt tightens and he turns his head to a better angle so that he can press their lips together and it's all Roy can do to not spontaneously combust from sheer happiness. Roy doesn't know that he will ever get over the fact that he is somehow allowed this—that he is somehow worthy of someone as inherently good as Ed. But he'll do everything in his power to keep him.
