Chapter Text
Peter was on the verge of tearing his hair out. “Neal,” he gritted out, “Care explaining why,” he edged out, “exactly, you think the head of Head Industries would recognize you on sight?” His tone suggested that his suggestion wasn’t exactly much of a suggestion.
“We-el,” Neal said, a tight smile at his lips, “Allegedly, I may or may not have pulled a long con as an employee of theirs that resulted in their entire middle infrastructure being toppled for a year or two. Allegedly,” he added for good measure.
Peter didn’t even try to stop the groan that escaped him. “Neal, you do know that adding ‘allegedly’ on to everything doesn’t automatically make it better, right?”
Neal shrugged. “Makes it better for me,” he said. “Besides, someone once told me that it’s a good way to make sure nothing can be traced back to you.”
“Neal–” Peter began, exhausted in every bone in his body.
“Peter,” he returned glibly.
Peter sighed. “Never mind.”
