Game Night

Summary:

“Okay so you may be wondering why I called you two here..” He started off, a bit dramatic but that was the way of life.

“It’s because I have noticed some people here don’t get along.”

The Heart and The Mind glanced over at each other. Both for once seemingly having the same thought. “Heart and I are the only ones here other than you.” The Mind voiced the thought, deadpanned.

“Shut up.” He waved him off. “Anyway since you two don’t get along. How about some bonding time? Right here, right now.”

Or: The three of them play board and card games.

Notes:

My second fic!

Hi, so I had this idea in the middle of the night and couldn't stop thinking about it the next day. So yay.

Also this is pre-Juno incident so The Heart still has eyes.

English is not my first language if the grammar sucks.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

The Soul was tired of The Heart and The Mind’s arguing. If they weren’t arguing then they were in an all out brawl or ignoring each other. It was exhausting on the best of days.

That’s why he devised a plan to get them to get along! Sure, all of his other plans never worked, but who’s to say this one won’t?

But first he had to get both of them to agree.

The Soul knocked on the door to The Heart’s room.

No response.

He knocked again.

No response.

“Heart? It’s me, Soul.” When he again got no response he decided fuck it, and opened the door.

The Heart room was dark, the lights turned off. His room was big and spacious, the walls a dark purple with a window where you could see the forest outside. The room was messy, the floor had a bunch of clothes on the floor and a few wrappers that The Heart probably didn’t bother to throw out. Though honestly The Soul’s room was worse. There was a shelf with all of his clothes and next to that shelf was a desk and chair. Laying on the desk were a set of coloured pencils, markers and a watercolour paint set.

On the opposite side of the desk and in the focal point of the wall lay a giant bed. On said bed laid The Heart, asleep under like ten blankets and on 5 different pillows.

So that was why he wasn’t responding.

The Soul went quietly over to the bed, as to not startle the emotional half. That would be a recipe for a disaster. He lightly shook The Heart.

“Yo, wake up.”

The Heart groaned lightly, but otherwise not stirring. The Soul just shook him harder. “Wake up, Heart. I need you to do something.”

The Moon grabbed a few blankets and pulled them over his head. The host rolled his eyes. At least he was awake now.

He sighed. “C’mon Heart.”

Reluctantly The Heart sat up. His eyes lidded with remnants of sleep as he wiped the sleep crust out of his eyes. “Ugh, whaddya want, Soul?” he asked, clearly grumpy about being woken up from his nap.

“Can you come over into the living room in like.. 10 minutes?” That’s probably how long it’ll take to convince The Mind to do the same.

“Mm, fine,” The Heart agreed as he knew The Soul probably wouldn’t wake him up for no reason. Probably. “Now get outta my room.”

The Soul held up his hands in surrender and left the room, closing the door after him as otherwise The Heart will bitch and moan that he didn’t. Okay now to convince The Mind.

He walked down the hall until he reached the door to The Mind’s room. He knocked.

Silence. He was almost about to knock again when The Mind’s voice rang out. “Who is it?”

“It’s me, Soul,” he said loudly.

A pause. “Then I suppose you may come in.”

The Soul opened the door and went inside.

The Mind’s room was light as the lights were turned on. The room was small however he didn’t seem to mind. The walls were a light blue with a window as well overlooking the forest. In the corner of the room lay a small made bed and beside it was a small drawer with a lamp on top. Next to that drawer lay a shelf with his clothes. The room was extremely organized, not a single sock on the floor or any trash laying around.

In another corner of the room laid a desk and chair where The Mind sat. On the desk was a stack of papers and pencils as well as a printer. The Soul didn’t know how he was going to use that printer as none of them had a computer. Next to the desk was a bookshelf.

The Mind sat on the desk chair, reading a book. If he squinted he could see it was… “Mind, are you reading a dictionary?” The Soul asked bewildered.

“Yes,” The Sun responded shortly, not even looking up from his dictionary.

What a weirdo.

“Why are you.. Nevermind.” He shook his head. “Can you follow me to the living room?”

Now The Mind glanced up. His expression was filled with suspicion. “Why? Did you break something?”

Okay, he felt offended. “No, I didn't break anything.”

“Then why should I accompany you to the living room?”

The Soul paused. He didn’t want to explain as The Mind would most definitely not agree to come with. He deflated. “Can you just follow me? Please?”

There was silence for about a minute, then a loud drawn out sigh escaped The Mind. Now The Host was positive he would disagree. He shut the book and placed it onto his desk.

“Fine. I suppose I will.”

“Really?”

“Yes.” The Mind stood up and gestured that The Soul should walk first, which he complied with.

They both went into the living room. The Soul sat onto one corner of the couch, saying that they needed to wait a bit. The logical side seemingly making his own conclusions to what he was planning, complied and sat on the opposite side.

It took about a minute or two for The Heart to join them as well. He paused at seeing The Mind there. Rolling his eyes, he sat next to The Soul.

“Soul, I don’t think that’s a good idea,” The Heart spoke up.

Last time The Soul tried to get them to “bond”, it ended with a screaming match, a table broken, The Mind punched in the face, and with The Heart storming off into his room.

The Soul remembering this faltered. “I mean sure last time was a disaster, but it doesn’t mean this time it’ll be! We’ll play board games.”

Both The Heart and The Mind looked unconvinced but eventually The Soul managed to get them on board. The Moon because he wanted to win and The Sun because The Heart goaded him to.

The first game wasn't actually a board game but a card game. They picked UNO.

“It’ll be fun.” The Soul had said.

Anyways, the three of them sat on the middle of the floor.

The Soul dealt the cards and set one card in the middle, a blue 3.

The Heart started and placed down a blue 7, The Mind set down a yellow 7.

The Soul winced. “Sorry,” he apologized before setting down a yellow +2 as that was the only yellow card he had.

“Fuck you,” The Heart mumbled under his breath as he took those two cards.

After a few games The Mind had won twice while The Heart and The Soul had both won once.

The games went on with minimal disagreements surprisingly. Currently the Mind has six cards, The Heart eight and The Soul three.

The host placed down a +4. “I’ll change it to green.”

This time The Heart wasn’t upset at The Soul, yet again, giving him cards. He smiled and placed down a +4 as well. “Actually, it should be yellow.”

The Mind narrowed his eyes. “That is not allowed.”

“Yes it is. You’re just mad you don’t have a +4,” The Heart argued.

The Mind ran a hand down his face. “I am not upset. However in the official UNO rules you are forbidden to place another +4 cards. You are supposed to take four cards and skip your turn.”

“Eh, what about house rules? I say we should be able to stack +4’s together.”

“No we shouldn’t–”

“Okay, let’s just play a different game.” The Soul intervened before those two could argue. Honestly he was on The Heart’s side, but the Mind would be annoyed if he said so.

With minor grumbling from both The Mind and The Heart, they moved onto the next game.

Next they tried to play scrabble which The Mind was very good at. VERY good at.

Every round he got the highest scores. Apparently reading a dictionary in his spare time helps someone memorize words, who would’ve thought?

Only once had The Heart managed to win, which he of course bragged to The Soul.

Ultimately though it had been seen as just too boring as The Mind would win anyway. Even he agreed.

“Hey, what if we play monopoly?” The Heart had suggested. The Soul had cackled and The Mind shrugged, agreeing to it.

Two hours in The Heart had both browns and a house on one of them, two pinks, an orange, a red, two railroads, four one hundred dollar bills, one fifty dollar bill, two twenty dollar bills and ten one dollar bills.

The Mind had a light blue, two oranges, two reds, a yellow, a railroad, one five hundred dollar bill, one one hundred dollar bills, 2 fifty dollar bills and one twenty dollar bill.

And lastly The Soul had a light blue, a pink, one yellows, all three greens with two having a house, both blues with both having two houses, Two five hundred dollar bills, two hundred dollar bills, one fifty dollar bill, eight twenty dollar bills and four ten dollar bills.

The Heart cursed loudly when he landed on The Mind’s yellow space.

“You owe me 24,” he said smugly.

The Moon gathered up the money, then paused. “Hey, Mind. What if we team up against Soul?”

The Soul looked between both of them. “Wait, what–”

“Hm. Why should I accept?”

The Heart rolled his eyes. “He has all of the expensive plots and most money. If we combine our plots and money, we might be able to win against him.”

The Mind thought about it for a moment. Weighing the pros and cons before nodding. “I accept.”

“The one time you two decide to team up on something… Is to beat me in monopoly?” The Soul hesitantly asked.

Both of them looked at each other. “Yes,” they replied at the same time.

Now The Soul had more money and more expensive properties then they had, but quickly got overwhelmed as both of them combined held more spaces. Eventually he had to sell a couple of properties which The Heart and The Mind combined could buy. In about an hour he had to declare bankruptcy.

“That wasn’t fair,” he complained.

“Suck it up,” The Sun retorted.

It was getting late, especially since monopoly took around 3-4 hours. So it was said that the next game was going to be the last. The Soul had tried to see if Cards Against Humanity was any fun, then he saw a white card saying “blowjobs for everyone”... Yeah, he promptly decided that they were not going to play that.

The Mind grabbed a deck of cards, and suggested playing a card game. They debated which game to play for a bit before ultimately, although for The Sun it was begrudgingly, they all agreed to play Go Fish.

All of them got seven cards while the rest went into the stock pile.

“Mind, do you have any fives?” The Soul asked, being the one to start the game.

The Mind sighed and gave away his five to The Soul. And that was enough for him to create a set, the first one in the game.

“Heart, do you have any fours?” The Mind asked.

“Go Fish!” The Heart exclaimed cheerfully, which he had to do. Now The Moon asked: “Mind, do you have any twos?”

The Mind’s eye twitched as he was forced to give away his two.

First round The Mind got three sets and The Heart and The Soul tied with five sets each.

Second round The Mind got two sets, The Heart got four and The Soul got seven.

Third round The Mind got one and The Heart and The Soul tied again with 6 sets each.

The Heart laughed after the third round which yet again The Mind got barely any sets. “Wow, you suck at Go Fish.”

The Sun glared at him. “This game is a luck-based game. There isn’t any logical thinking or strategy involved. You two simply are luckier.”

“You’re just a sore loser, Mind,” The Soul joined in on teasing him.

After a few more rounds in which The Mind only managed to barely win once, The Soul chose to end the game.

It was dark outside, the moon shining bright in the sky and stars dotted the night sky.

The Heart was putting the deck of cards back onto the shelf of games, which until now had not been played. The Host had been standing in thought when he finally spoke up. “This was actually fun. We managed to go for hours without actually arguing.”

Sure there were a few times here and there where a fight was about to start, but it didn’t. The three of them managed to actually have fun together.

The both of them paused. The Mind looked out the window in thought and The Heart looked surprised as he hadn’t thought about that.

“I suppose we did..” The Sun spoke softly, which wasn’t something you heard often.

“Huh..” The Heart murmured and went into his room without any further words. The Mind went into his own as well.

The Soul sat down onto the couch. He was hoping this “bonding attempt” would’ve worked, though he was surprised it actually did. It was.. nice being able to play games, have conversations and have fun without worrying it was all going to be ruined by the wrong word said at the wrong time.

Sure, they were not whole yet, but maybe the journey wasn’t that far anymore?
