Work Text:

Yavin 4 is war-torn. Of course, people still live there. There are always people who stay, even through the worst of what the universe has to offer. That includes Kes Dameron, who shared his life with his wife and son on the moon.

So, when Poe invites Finn to come with him after the war, Finn doesn't hesitate. The war is…over. At least, it seems that way. What else is Finn going to do? Where else is he going to go? Of course, he'll go with Poe no matter where he wants to go.

The planet is verdant, green and blue, as they approach, dropping out of hyperspace. Finn doesn't remember his home world, doesn't remember his family or where he came from, but he gazes at this planet, sees the softness in Poe's face as he takes it in, and Finn feels like home.

"My mother is gone, but my dad is still here," he admits to Finn.

Finn hadn't known. He didn't know what he was walking in to, really. He just knew he would follow Poe to the ends of the galaxy if that's what Poe wanted to do.

Finn squints over at him. "Does he know we're coming?"

"I told him I was bringing a, uh, friend," Poe admits, not taking his eyes of the planet that is slowly zooming into overtake their entire field of view out the front of their ship.

Finn nods. He doesn't know what else to say. What will Poe's dad think of him?

Poe's dad, Kes, is elderly—maybe close to 60 if not in his 60s—and he lives in a small apartment in Wetyin's Colony. Poe promises they'll go out to the old house soon, but for now, they need to at least make appearances with Kes.

Finn’s wearing Poe’s jacket, the one that's ostensibly Finn's now anyway, when they walk into Kes's third-floor apartment. The man immediately squints at Finn.

"Is that my jacket?" Kes points a slightly shaky finger right at Finn, before they can even take their shoes off or meet the man in the living room.

Finn freezes, one foot halfway out of his shoe in the foyer. "Uh…" he says lamely.

"Yeah, Dad," Poe jumps in smoothly. His socked feet are already padding across the floor to sit on the couch. "I gave it to him years ago. Suits him better, anyway."

Finn finishes taking his shoes off and trails behind Poe to sit next to him on the couch across from Kes. There is a respectable distance between them that Finn is no longer used to.

"Is this your Stormtrooper?" Kes asks, eyes still narrowed.

"Yep!" Poe says brightly. "The one who led the led the Stormtrooper Rebellion, in the flesh."

Finn, who has been incredibly proud of himself for what he was able to accomplish, for freeing all those stolen and brainwashed men, suddenly feels embarrassed under the whisper bird gaze of Kes Dameron.

"Well, welcome, son," Kes says, directly to Finn, his face softening into a smile. "Anyone part of the Resistance is a friend of mine."

Friend. He's a friend of Kes Dameron. He lets his muscle relax, and the three of them fall into an easy banter as Kes jumps into a sort of host mode to serve them all tea.

"Used to grow the plant for this tea at the old place," Kes explains as he passes a cup and saucer to Finn.

The liquid warms him as it makes its way down to his belly.

"It's delicious," Finn tells him, because it's true, but also because that's the polite thing to say.

"So, you boys really want to fix up the old place?" Kes questions, sitting forward in his chair and flicking his gaze between the two of them.

"I think it's what Mom would have wanted," Poe says in a tender voice that Finn rarely gets to hear.

Kes chuckles. "I think you might be right, but I wish you the best of luck. There isn't much left."

"The war is over," Poe says, hopeful if apprehensive, "we've got a lot of time on our hands."

Kes had not been lying. There isn't much left of the house. But Finn can see why Shara and Kes had chosen it as the place to raise their family. The red sun sets behind the mountains behind the house and it bathes the whole valley in a gorgeous blood orange hue.

"Wow," Finn says, stepping off the speeder bike and taking in the landscape. He doesn't know if he's ever seen anything like it, but it sure is the prettiest thing he can remember seeing in his lifetime.

Poe smirks as he hops off the speeder bike. They'd loaded it up with camping gear and some materials to start working on the house. None of this is permanent, at least not yet, but the expanse of the future before him feels rife with possibilities. And there Poe is, standing in the orange light of his homeworld—homemoon?—and Finn just can't help but kiss him.

He grabs Poe by the shirt and reels him in, pressing their mouths together in a quick, hot press. Maybe he just ruined everything, but he thinks that the smirk cracking across Poe's face says otherwise.

"What was that for?" Poe says dopey, maybe a little lovesick.

"You brought me here, brought me home, introduced me to your dad. And I think I've wanted to for a while," Finn explains, his fist relaxing in Poe's shirt.

"Me too, honestly," Poe says and hauls Finn back in for a deeper, sweeter kiss.

This time, Poe's hands are on him—one around his neck and the other on his shoulder. It's warm and languid. Finn's never been kissed before, but there was just something simmering under the surface for him for years with Poe. This just felt like the right time, and based on how Poe's trying to reel him in, press impossibly closer, Poe has to feel the same.

There's so much work to be done on the house, but for tonight, they sleep together under the stars.
