Chapter Text
Season’s pass and winter comes and goes in the blink of an eye. Spring is back around in full swing. This time though, Eijirou had only visited his fairy circle for about a month. With his blessing, he was able to stay warm in his big form without worrying about his wings. It allowed him to hike the distance from the human road to the fairy circle without freezing, Izuku having made the journey by car to both drop him off and pick him. Before he’d known it, Eijirou was back home.
Yup, that’s what their house had officially become over the last year.
Eijirou took care of the house and all the chores, for the most part. Izuku insisted on sharing and taking over when he wasn’t too tired from work. Even when he was, he’d still put in the work. They were in a relationship and bringing home money did not make him exempt from chores, the man had argued. Human rules or something, Eiji found it encouraging. The red-head wouldn’t miss out on the opportunities to cradle his adorable, sleepy boyfriend in his arms after said silly human overexerted himself.
Life without Izuku had become a reality that no longer made sense.
Of course, now that Eijirou had arrived at this conclusion, it followed that the next logical step would be to make The Promise. Just thinking about it made Eijirou’s patterns take a soft glow. His own life bonded and blended with Izuku’s, thus making them both whole before the Spirits and the world? There wasn’t a bigger show of love and trust, it was the ultimate promise towards one another.
When his fairy friends had come over to their garden for a visit, Mina was the first to suggest getting it over with once he’d hinted about asking.
“Twin, you’ve never looked as bright and happy as you are being with him. The Spirits granted your wish, gave you a blessing so you could be with him in his world.” The pink fairy said matter-o-factly as she lounged comfortably on one of the first-time-blooming orange Dahlias. “From the time we’ve shared with him in your garden and from the word of your garden as well, he’s brighter and happier with you too.”
“We’re very sure he won’t break your heart.” Denki added, the air around him buzzing with excited electricity. “If he ever did, he’d never be found again. He won’t though, so rest easy knowing we all approve!”
“Way to be dark, Denki.” Hanta quickly interrupted. “It’s the truth though, we all approve. Now, brave up and make a cute ring to propose with! We’ll help pick the flowers, I think everyone in this garden wants in on it.”
With his family and the garden on board, he’d had one person left to ask: the grouchy blond who was the closest person to Izuku since they were kids.
Approaching him about this in private had been a little difficult, mostly because when they hung out it was with Izuku there with them. One day though, Katsuki asked Eijirou to accompany him to get groceries after the first and Izuku had arrived home exhausted from their shift. Izuku insisted he’d wanted to go too, but Eijirou held him down on the couch and the freckled firefighter dozed off, betrayed by his own body. The two men were then left to their small trip to the market, one that in fact had been Katsuki’s excuse to get Eijirou alone.
“So, what’s got you buzzing all anxious around me, Chibi?” Katsuki asked the second they were out the door. “I catch shit like this, you’ve been trying to talk to just me. Here’s your chance, cough it up.”
“Um!” Ei was caught a bit off guard, but he was thankful the blond was so perceptive. This was the opportunity Eijirou was looking for. “I-I kinda wanted to ask your opinion…”
“About?”
“...I’m thinking of proposing to Izuku.” The fairy confessed. “I didn’t want to do it without asking what you think.”
“Oh thank fuck.” Katsuki sighed, relief in his voice. “About goddamned time! I got insider information from our shifts, but he’s been dreaming about growing old with you. Cheesy shit, hopeless romantic type of dreams. It would be annoying if I didn’t get it.”
“W-Wait– He wants to stay with me until we’re both old?!” It would happen if they were bonded through the old fairy ways. Lifespans were blended together after marriage in the fairy realm. Izuku would live longer than most humans, Ei would live less… but it would be a beautiful, lovely life.
“Ya bet, shitty hair.” Katsuki stopped as they came up to his car. “You make his life better, and he smiles so much more with you in his life. I’m his best friend, but there’s only so much I could do to stave off the loneliness he felt. That’s gone now, and you’re responsible. If you’re asking me for my opinion, you’ve taken your sweet time proposing.”
“I see…” Eijirou grinned as Katsuki placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Ask him, you got this.”
So then it was all about weaving the ring and finding the perfect time to propose! Easy, right?
It took a bit to get the ring to look just how he wanted. Now, normally fairies proposed by making a “portal” of their own, a flower ring to symbolize a new life together. Some humans proposed with rings to wear on their fingers. Ei figured the closest he could get, a mix of both worlds, was to make Izuku a flower crown. So he worked on it, powdered some fairy dust to keep it fresh while he waited for his window. When he was done weaving red buttercups and their stems into fairy silk provided by Hanta, Eiji placed the crown in a special box Katsuki had helped him get. The blond had also suggested that Eijirou proposed in a cliche romantic setting, since Izuku was such a sap and all.
The setting would be a candlelit dinner at an exclusive restaurant, possible thanks to Katsuki’s boyfriend’s. A no biggie favor.
The night of, Eijirou wore a borrowed black suit and a white buttoned shirt under his jacket. Izuku on his end wore a suit himself along with a super cute bowtie the color of his eyes. He looked beautiful, and Ei couldn’t help the dreamy sigh that left his lips as he watched his boyfriend pick up his phone and keys.
“What?” Izuku had asked all giggles as Ei hugged him from behind, lips against Izuku’s head.
“You’re so handsome…you know? I’m lovestruck is all.”
“Hmm,” Izuku turned around, took a hold of Ei’s shirt and brought him down so their noses would touch. “I’m afraid you’ve beaten me to the compliment. I’m also lovestruck seeing you in this.”
They share a quick kiss, patterns flaring up on Ei’s cheeks as a result. Izuku brushed his fingers over them, a small smile on his face all the while.
“We should go, before I reconsider how well-kept I want to stay for the evening.” Izuku said as he gave Eijirou the eyes, the ones that usually led to some more intimate interactions with a lot less clothes than what they had.
“Haha, yeah… let’s leave it for after.” Eijirou replied, a bit dumbstruck by his boyfriend’s gaze.
The restaurant was practically set up for just them, a romantic atmosphere with violins included. Candlelit dinner, amazing food, minding the fact Eiji knew Izuku’s and Katsuki’s was the best so far. Even with Izuku batting his eyelashes, face illuminated by the gentle light of the candle before them, Eijirou couldn’t bring the box he’d masterfully stashed under his jacket and against his back. The moment didn’t feel right, as crazy as that sounded while they played “footsie”, as Izuku called it, under the table while holding hands. They stayed at the restaurant for a while and then they took the long way back home. The two made a stop at the city gardens to take a short stroll against the cool night air. Even then, while they were making out hidden away between the trees and sleeping bushes, the timing just wasn’t right. Which sucked, again. It felt like he may have been chickening out, as the humans said. He really wasn’t though! It just didn’t feel right.
A bit disappointed in himself, they arrived back home and Izuku took no time to drag him to the bathroom. It was clear his boyfriend had been dying to get him naked, so he also took no time doing that while keeping the box hidden in the discarded pieces.
A long long shower later, the two are officially getting ready for bed. Eijirou exits first, his hair in no need of drying thanks to it being impermeable. He takes advantage of his boyfriend being sleepily distracted by his own hair drying, to pick up the box with the flower crown off the floor and stash it in his drawer on his nightstand. Lying down, he thought of how silly it had been for him to not pop the question. It should have been simple, he had the best stage to do it and yet…
“Auuuugh.” He groaned, his frustration not abated by the happy buzzing on his skin left by Izuku’s earlier ministrations.
“Eiji, you okay?” Izuku came out of the bathroom, hair tousled all over, eyes all droopy from sleep. He’s had a toothbrush in his mouth, so his question comes out a bit muffled.
There’s a glow to him, soft and sparkly, he looks cute and beautiful and perfect. Ei had the privilege to see him every day, every version of him. He saw themselves growing old, walking towards the hot cocoa fueled winter of their lives together.
Oh. Eiji perked up realizing this was it.
“One sheck.” Izuku went back into the bathroom, likely to spit out the toothpaste and rinse up.
When he came back, he dragged his feet to bed, sitting next to Ei. “What’s up? That groan sounded super mortified.”
“Ah, it’s just… umm, hold on.” Eijirou, sporting a large smile, took out the box with the flower crown. “I’ve been trying to find the right time all evening… and it's silly, but… this is the right time.”
As he opened the box to expose the carefully crafted crown, Izuku took a hand to his mouth.
“Ei, what–”
“Would you, my flower, my love, grant me the honor of being yours and only yours for the rest of our lives?” Eiji finally asked, a huge weight and all his doubt lifting off his shoulders with the question.
Izuku didn’t answer right away, he looked like he was about to blow up into happy tears though. He took the box from Ei, placed it safely out of the way, and then tackled his boyfriend into a hug.
“YES! Yes, yes, yes!” He repeated over and over. “My fairy, my love, I accept only if you’ll have me be yours in return!”
“Of course, of course!”
A long, emotional hug later, Izuku backs off and giddily waits for Eijirou to crown him. The red contrasted beautifully with his greens, truly a vision worthy of Eijirou’s melty emotions.
“So are we having a human wedding or a fairy wedding?” Izuku asks.
“Both? A fairy wedding is more permanent though. So, if that’s okay with–” Ei is interrupted by a squeal and a kiss.
“Of course! As permanent as it can be!” Izuku exclaims, nuzzling into the fairy’s chest after. “It won’t end with me being spirited away to the fairy realm forever, right? I would miss my job.”
“Nope! I am going to take you through a fairy ring for it, we’ll be back wed and sound, promise!”
Enchanted flower crown not removed from Izuku’s head, the two cuddle up in bed and start imagining what their ceremonies would be like until sleep defeats them. In the morning they’d wake up to each other, yet again, but this time, they’d be engaged and promised to be each other’s for as long as they drew breath and the seasons changed.
The End!
