Summary
A re-imagining of the events of Inquisition/Trespasser from mostly Solas's perspective, if the Dalish Inquisitor was a bit sassier and more inquiring, and he was a bit more open to being vulnerable. Mostly follows the events of the game, but with new scenes in-between as they grow closer, and a bit of AU imagining of moments when he's forced lets his guard down. Lots of pining and angst ahead I suspect, and a few creative revisions of in-game scenes. There might be a happy ending but I haven't quite decided yet; there will be tears.

If he considered it, it was not for long. Soon his shoulders would square, his chin turning up in that way she knew so well. The return of Pride. No matter the instance, it would always come back to this:
She, reaching out, begging him to choose their love. He, leaning in, only for a fraction of a moment, and then no more.
"Ir abelas, vhenan... but I cannot." He kept his eyes away, his face and body turned. "Long before we met I... failed my oldest friend. She died for that failure," he explained. "If I leave the Veil in place, I am destroying the world she wanted. And I will have," he stuttered, "she, will have died for nothing."
Her heart was breaking. Before her and inside her. Her Pride was shattered. So, it would make sense now to turn away. All the same, she would sooner be destroyed at his heel than alone in a world without him.
There was no honour in it, sure, but it was the truth of the thing.
She would allow him his final betrayal. She would accept it; forgive it as the price of loving him.

Ellana is dead. Skyhold is empty, abandoned, a hollowed-out memory of what was once the beating heart of the Inquisition. Solas lingers in its empty halls, tethered to a grief he cannot move past. He has seen her in the Fade— not a spirit, not a demon, but her. Now, in the spaces where she walked, she returns. He remembers her scent, her laughter, and her hands reaching for him. There is a strangeness encompassing Solas and Cole and Skyhold. She keeps coming back, and she keeps coming back wrong.
Ellana is haunting him and Cole cannot directly tell Solas why. All they know is that she is not at peace and neither is he.
