Told partly through snippets of published research and other informative texts written by the poet Dandelion, and partly through the various experiences of the Witcher Geralt of Rivia as they have occurred primarily in the years 1267 and 1268, this story includes personal reflections on (and indisputable facts about): the various anatomical features and physiological responses of Witchers; snippets of conversation between people who are far too comfortable making assumptions about people and things; the navigation of intimacies both familiar and unfamiliar; and the questioning of both personal and professional motivations, especially as they concern the decades-long friendship of Geralt and Dandelion.

Summary
Jaskier is not what anyone would call a traditional alpha, and certainly not the kind of alpha anyone would want for a mate. And he is quite surprised to unceremoniously discover that Geralt, his companion of many years, is in fact an omega. Geralt and his fellow witchers repress their heats until they arrive at Kaer Morhen for the winter. This year, since Jaskier’s rut is starting at just the right time, Geralt invites Jaskier to come along. Jaskier thinks he knows what to expect when partnering an omega in heat, but the situation at Kaer Morhen thoroughly wrecks his expectations.

Is that a pickup line? Maybe. It’s the worst one Geralt has ever heard in his very long life, but that isn’t the problem. The problem races, red hot down the length of his forearm, pooling uncomfortably around his soulmark. The scrawled out writing on the underside of his wrist had told Geralt the first thing his soulmate was going to say to him as soon as he could read. Silly as it had sounded, it’s even more ridiculous out loud.
To say Geralt is not a fan of destiny is a monumental understatement. Given the fact that the soul mark scrawled out on his wrist is the worst pickup line he's ever heard, he doesn't anticipate his soulmate being any more welcome than anything else that life has saddled him with. But the longer he spends with Jaskier, the harder his soulmate is to resist, and somewhere along the way Geralt knows he'll have to reckon with whether his feelings are manufactured by kismet or truly his own.

A monster hunt gone wrong leaves Jaskier lifeless in a grave and Geralt with a piece of his heart missing. Geralt isn’t sure how to function in a world without Jaskier’s sunny smile and sweet voice, but it might be a tad easier to learn if Jaskier would just stop appearing in his dreams already. However, when his dreams start corresponding with reality, Geralt thinks that perhaps the bard is still somehow alive out there. Perhaps Jaskier is connecting with him through some magical lifeline. Perhaps Geralt won’t have to say goodbye, after all.
Or perhaps Geralt has finally gone insane.

He is determined to break the curse and rid himself of the annoyance, and continue on his loner and stoic ways.
