Summary
The kid lingering at the bar is so obviously out of place that Leonard can’t help approaching him. He holds up a hand to the bartender, who nods at him, and sinks onto the stool to the kid’s left. “You’re on the wrong side of town,” he remarks.
The kid glances up from his drink. When he sees Leonard, he grins, knocks back his drink, and signals for another. “Am I?”
“Don’t be cute with me,” Leonard drawls. He accepts his drink from the bartender and sips slowly, a counterpoint to the way the kid downs his second glass. “Pretty boy like you in a place like this? You’re looking for something—a deal with the devil, of whatever kind. So you might as well spit it out, because I’m the most understanding man you’ll find tonight.”
