“Sh—crap,” Gregory said, crouching down next to her. “Sorry, sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you or anything.” He fumbled in his pockets for a pack of tissues he knew he kept somewhere.
The girl giggled weakly. “No, it’s—it wasn’t you. I mean, you surprised me, but this,” she gestured at her teary face, eye makeup streaking down her cheeks, “this wasn’t you.”
Gregory sheepishly handed over the tissues nonetheless. “Still. I try not to give guests heart attacks unless they deserve it.”
(Or, Gregory and Cassie's first meeting.)

Summary
But back to the insecure thing. She wasn’t usually, but finding out where she ranked in priority with her former friends was making her a little bit sensitive and cautious now.
Gregory had been to her house before—for dinner and sleepovers and to hang out (the much more grown-up version of a “play date”)—and it’d been great. Fantastic. An absolute blast. Her dad liked him and was always glad to have him over, especially knowing how he’d made Cassie’s birthday so awesome.
But Gregory never invited her to his house.
