They think they’re whispering. They think distance and a few leaves underfoot will hide them. Maybe it would, for anyone else. But Vince can’t rely on sight, so the world comes to him in sound: the curve of a breath, the rustle of clothes, the ugly shape of a smirk hidden inside a voice.
Or: Vince is blind and feels insecure because people think he's so average, while Adam is so hot. Adam makes a point to describe everything that he loves about Vince's appearance.

There is something to be said about Seattle in the summer. The weather is perfect, the water and the mountains look amazing every single day, it’s like the sun is out for a single hour and the entire city is affected by its energy.
Vince spends the first few weeks doing nothing but paddleboarding, going to farmers markets, and spending afternoons shopping, walking up and down back roads while dipping in and out of small shops.
He wishes he felt like a local, with his freshly caught fish and equally fresh vegetables residing in his canvas tote bag while he drives his EV back to his box house that overlooks the water, but he knows he’s not and never will be a local. He’s just a transplant, dropped into Seattle for his work, just like everyone else in this fucking town.

Adam hears Vince huff and flop back onto his lounger like he’d started to sit up in hope.
“Yeah, fine.”
More rustling, the whisper of the cabana opening and closing, and Vince’s dragging footsteps through the hot sand beyond. Adam thinks about joining him, about how nice the water would feel right now. But also how Vince also needs the space to get himself back under control.
He naps instead.
