On stage, George could hardly tear his eyes from Bob. Off stage, Bob's hands seemed to find him without thought, as if pulled by a gravity neither had learned to resist.

Friar Park, 1980. Bob was touring in England soon, and he hadn’t seen George in ages. Divorced and drifting, he seemed to notice things about George that he hadn’t done before. Quiet domesticity. A kind of peace that Bob couldn’t even name, let alone touch.
And—those earrings. It became a private obsession, the glint of metal against skin.
All it took was a suggestion blurted too carelessly, and suddenly the space between them felt thinner than it had ever been.
