Summary
Zuko felt his face scrunch as he looked into the fire, red and orange flames licking the air. “They don’t really consider banished insurgents as next in line to the throne.”
“They’re wrong,” Chit Sang snapped, and the fire flared brighter for a moment.
“Are they?” Zuko chuckled humorlessly. He could feel the shape of the hand cupping his face, feel the weight of the shame of his branding. “You need some kind of honor to be—“
“You have more than all of them combined,” Chit Sang interrupted him, with enough vitriol to have Zuko snapping his head up to look at him. “You, over the snake on the throne and the viper at his feet. You, Prince Zuko—“
He cut himself off abruptly, scrubbing a hand over his brow.

Summary
So, Sokka’s brilliant brain tried to piece together more of the clues that defined their resident walking mystery:
1: Zuko seems really… strange. Right now. Emotionally speaking. Kinda like Sokka after the eclipse where his invasion plan was thwarted and a lot of good people got taken prisoner and they ultimately failed to stop the Fire Lord
2: Zuko’s a good warrior. With lots of experience, and not just in bouts. Like as if he had a commission, before, as an officer. Besides the whole "yelling boat guy" position he seemed to have when he hunted Aang
3: Katara once mentioned that Zuko mentioned that his scar was the mark of a banished prince. Maybe "banishment" in the Fire Nation is different than at the South Pole, but it still seemed like a bad thing that was a consequence of a different bad thing
4: Zuko’s done some objectively bad things
5: Zuko gets nightmares. Bad ones
Sokka's brain wasn’t really liking the look of the puzzle.
[or where the Gaang try to piece together the clues about Zuko, stop the Fire Lord, and save the world. "Try" being the operative word. Tweens and teens are not known for their observational skills]

Summary
The point was Zuko knew damn well what ‘Pai Sho’ was a euphemism for.
And he understood, he really did! Fire Lord Sozin, in all his wisdom, was still human. He could still be led astray by flawed thinking, which led to the unfortunate declaration at the beginning of the war that outlawed any relationships or presentations outside of the, ahem, ‘expected default.’ Zuko knew that until he found the Avatar, returned home, became Fire Lord, and fixed his great-grandfather’s mistake, people like his cousin, their squad, Master Piandao, Fat, and Uncle (apparently), would have to continue to be subtle in their inclinations.
But that didn’t mean Uncle had to go ashore and ‘play Pai Sho’ in every. Single. Port.

Oh Merciful Agni, please no.
Dreading the answer, Zuko bent forwards and shifted one of his whiskers to press against the Chief of the Sun Warriors forehead, projecting his question as much as he could.
Which false Fire Lord is on the throne?
Chimalli blinked, either at the question itself or the method of talking.
“False Fire Lord Ozai. He ascended to the throne three years ago, at the passing of his father.”
Zuko felt very cold, dread pooling in his chest, chilling his inner fire.or: Zuko and Gaang are sent back in time but they're not in the bodies of their younger selves, but in ones competently different then what they are used to.
If not updated in a while, don't panic.

Three years have passed since Zuko was banished. Three years since most of the 41st division was slaughtered. Three years since whispers across a sprawling nation began to turn to shouts.
Zuko just wants to go home, willfully unaware of the world's desire to turn him into symbol and scapegoat.
None of Zuko's crew actually planned on finding the Avatar. None of them are sure how to move forward.

Zuko and the Gaang take a quick trip to town to gather the supplies they desperately need. Get in, shop, get out. Easy right? Except, of course, if you're really bad at laying low - or at not showing people your super secret air-bending tattoos.
Great. It seems like this time it's Zuko's turn to carry the braincell, and prevent Aang from being taken to the Fire Nation's newest cult leader.Alternatively:
