Tachihara looked at him with an unrecognizable expression on his face.
Junichiro Tanizaki was an agency member, one of the good ones at that. He hasn't tried to hook up with a mafioso, or a guild member, or a fellow detective. He didn't disappear for hours a week to come back saying his latest attempt at suicide didn't word, and he did all his paperwork.
(That's how (most) of the agency saw him. Tanizaki was pretty sure Ranpo saw through his "normal, good worker" act.)
So how did he end up opposite a hunting dog, trying to keep his face devoid of emotion?

He hasn’t cried. Maybe he had at some point between finding out about Teruko’s death and discovering Jouno’s body, he can’t remember. But he hasn’t cried since waking up–he hasn’t let himself. He doesn’t deserve to. He doesn’t deserve to grieve for them. It should have been me. He can’t let the thought go. You should be here. It should have been me. It was honorable for a soldier to die on the battlefield. Maybe surviving had been his punishment.
Or: Tecchou is the last Hunting Dog.
