Summary
If anyone important had been paying close enough attention before things got out of hand, they would probably say it started with the fire. A fair assumption to make, given how circumstances unfolded afterwards. A convenient metaphor, even, for the way that such a comparatively small event exploded into something so destructive and uncontrollable.
They would be wrong, of course. It started with something much smaller than that.
It started with a meeting at a club.
No, that isn't quite right, either. It started with an argument in a five star hotel that spiraled into betrayals and bitterness.
Except really… it started with a stolen skull. With a new real estate development. With the sheer bad luck to be embraced by the wrong clan. With a cult on the other side of the country. With control. With the excision of a tumor, sliced clean of muscle and flesh, leaving behind deep-seated decay and paranoia. With ancient feuds. With the firstborn.
From far enough away, everything looks like it came from the same root. But it's easiest to say it started with the meeting.

“Why would you? Doesn’t it bother you?"
“Not really.” Khalida is well aware that the Embrace left her with an innate pyrophobia– open fireplaces make her squirm– but she’s never been bothered by something so small. “I mean… you smoke, but you can’t take a candle?”
“I don’t play around with fire,” Coco says forcefully. She finishes her drink and crushes out her cigarette into the empty thermos, as if to emphasize her point.
“That’s a shame.” A smile creeps onto Khalida’s face. It’s nice seeing the stoic front crack a little. “Not at all?”

Khalida isn't quite ready to invite Coco back to her Haven, but she is curious to get to know her better one-on-one. All the better if it means getting under Coco's skin.

“Stop stealing key cards,” Coco insists. “Stop brainwashing my hotel staff.”
“Not stealing. The suite is under my name,” Khalida corrects.
“It WAS under your name when your sire owned the hotel. New management, new rules. Ask for permission.”
“But it’s easier for everyone this way!”
Coco scowls, obdurate.
Khalida sighs. She props one arm up on the armchair and drops her chin into her hand. “Oh, Princess, I don’t want to argue. I’ll text before I come over next time, if that’s what makes you happy. Okay?”
“Thank you.” Coco’s shoulders relax just a bit. “And stop rewriting hotel security’s memories.”
“And I’ll stop rewriting security’s memories,” Khalida agrees magnanimously.
“Perfect. Yes. Okay.” Coco exhales in relief.
“It’s just that when we have so little time for each other, it seems silly to worry about trivial things like that.”—
Coco and Khalida find a moment in their busy unlives to sit down, have a drink, and unwind.

“Are you sure you can’t give us any more details?” Khalida tuts. “My associates are getting a little impatient, and frankly, I can’t blame them.”
Coco steps up to Nigel where he’s held in place, half-crouched. The darkness seems to follow her, gloom sweeping over the center of the room. As she reaches out for Nigel, he shrinks from her shadow-coated hand. Still, Coco’s grasp settles on the back of Nigel’s head. She yanks it back by the hair, forcing Nigel to look up as her tendrils roil and seethe around her.
The effect is really quite delightful. Khalida hadn’t realized Coco has such a flair for the dramatic.

Nigel's cowardice does not mix well with the Lasombra clan compulsion. Khalida takes notes.

“Mmm. Nah, not like I have a lot to unpack.” Julia makes her way over to the couch, throws herself back into the cushions, and swings her feet up onto the low mahogany table. “Can we talk? If you have a sec.”
“Of course.” Coco takes a seat in one of the dark green armchairs facing the sofa. Julia retrieves a cigarette from a side pocket of her dress, lights it, and studies Coco for a long, silent moment as she takes a drag.
Coco doesn't bother pretending to make herself comfortable. Julia can play at being cool and casual, but it's impossible for Coco to forget that the balance of power between the two of them has irrevocably changed.
Finally, Julia says, “Panhard told me you were interested in being the Lasombra Primogen.”

Julia having successfully concluded her investigation into Baron Callihan's death, she and Coco have a conversation regarding the status of clan Lasombra within the Camarilla.
