After a rebel group of Kingdom workers captured Phoenix on an seemingly trouble-free mission, things quickly went awry. Used as ransom, Phoenix was painfully aware of his place among humans. He was less than a thing, and Kingdom was very happy to remind him of that, because old grievances are not forgotten and the past somehow always catches up with Phoenix - as if to remind him that even though he survived, his life is not his.
And as Phoenix once heard, the best way to destroy relationships is from within. Kingdom probably heard that too.

The class trial isn’t where it started. It’s just the easiest to explain, because telling it from the beginning means revealing so many other secrets he can feel himself cracking under the weight of them all. The class trial tells it best, anyway, especially in a law office. And for Edgeworth and Larry, it probably wouldn’t even be a lie.

She pulls her coat tighter around herself with one hand, the other holding the strap of an overnight bag slung across her shoulder. Her hair is slightly frizzy from the rain, the curls at her temple limp from humidity. Her umbrella is nowhere in sight. She must’ve walked from her car.
“Oh,” Phoenix says, startled. His breath catches on the shift in reality. “Hi.”

Phoenix, the man she barely knew, lay over on his desk. Papers were strewn around and under him, crumpled up or just in the open. If Maya looked closer, she could see blotches of pen ink on the man’s cheek and tips of his tan, scarred hands. His tan lips were slightly parted to let out a dribble of sleepy drool, and slight snores could be heard echoing around the otherwise silent office.
She would’ve found it cute, if she didn’t notice the concerningly dark eyebags under the man’s mismatched closed eyes. How tense his shoulders were, even when sleeping, and the slight shift and jump every once in a while in his sleep. How he was still in his work attire, and still being in the office at 12:00 at night, and how it looked like he was intending to work late.
